Squatters Outer Darkness

Squatters Outer Darkness

A Russian Imperial Stout is one of the most intensely flavored beers a brewer can create. The combination of rich roasted barley, oak, molasses and liquorice root combine to create an utterly unique and complex imperial stout.

3.9 Can from 504 Craft Beer Reserve, New Orleans. Aroma is roasted malt with dark chocolate, liquorice, molasses, and a touch of coffee. Flavour is sweet with a good roasty bitteness. Body is full. Bit heavy on the liquorice, nice bittersweet flavour. Good stuff.
4.2 New discovery of the brewery and the beer from my nearest craft beer shop in Odessa, TX. I purchased a four pack of 12 oz cans, hope I enjoy them all. The tab is lifted and the brew is poured into my New Belgium .47l snifter. The obsidian black body comes out like a delivery of 10/40W oil and leaves a very healthy oak brown head. I take a smell of the contents, chocolate, vanilla, raspberry and caramel, rather promising. On to more important matters, a drink, hey there, really good. Charcoal, black cherry, burned oak, toffee and baker's chocolate. Nicely bitter and the alcohol is totally covered. Definitely a keeper..
4.0 Probably my favorite Squatters Craft beer. Pours black with malty chocolate molasses aroma. Tastes of chocolate/licorice/"camp fire." Really like it.
3.8 Twelve ounce can. Pours thick, very dark, with a brown head. Aroma of roasted malts and molasses. Taste is rich and complex: notes of molasses, licorice. rye. Lasting palate of same flavors. This is a very nice Russian imperial stout. Love to have it aged in bourbon barrels. Thumbs up!
3.9 750 ml bottle aquired from breweryin UT. Taste of dark chocolate, molasses and cinnamon. Really well rounded.
4.1 Can/Fest. A- Licorice, cocoa, almonds, molasses. A- Black color, black liquid, brown head. T- Leather, char, roasty, licorice, cocoa. P- Full body, average texture, average carbonation, rich finish. O- Lots of earthy flavors, especially on the palate. Nose was surprisingly a bit light but still nice. Didn't realize this was in cans. They had it listed as a Barrel Aged version but I am assuming this is the only Outer Darkness and it's already aged. Good stuff.
3.8 Pour is a motor oil thick black with a small tan head. Aroma is a big charred malt with some molasses and a big alcohol as well. Flavor is a big burnt sugar with some molasses and some maple syrup. The alcohol does not show up like the aroma let on that it would but it still gives a nice warming feeling in the chest. Pretty good Impy stout. Plenty of charred malt, molasses like sugar with a warming alcohol.
3.6 fusal with notes of raisin molasses and dark as the moon. Just wish it was a little less alcoholic.
4.0 12 oz can from a 4pk. Consumed from the can but from what I can tell it appears dark and stouty. Big roast, cocoa and coffee. light hop presence that complements the dark malts well. Smooth and chewy. Picked up in a liquor store while walking the Las Vegas strip. Might be the best Beer this town has to offer, certainly the best value.
3.5 Refrigerated 12 oz. aluminum can poured into a glass. Black with medium light brown head. Aroma is cocoa, medium body, medium carbonation, and some lacing. Taste is cocoa, dark chocolate, and licorice.
4.5 Bottle. Pours with the perfect visuals. Pitch black, with a tan head that fades to tan. The nose is superb, rich with toasty goodness. Thick with all the appropriate flavors -- dark chocolate, cocoa nibs, warm brownies. Delish. (#6735, 8/5/2017)
4.0 From a can. Pours thick and black with a tan head. The head is foamy, modest lacing. Aroma is primarily bacon and bitter chocolate. Taste is bittersweet, trending bitter at the finish. Amid subtle cherry hints are plenty of smoke, bacon, and chocolate. Body is thick and chewy. A rich and complex brew.
3.3 Bottle at the RateBeer DC tasting. Dark brown with light tan head. Aromas of bitter chocolate, light smoke, malt, caramel. Tastes of malt, caramel, cocoa. Medium-light body with a dry finish.
3.7 Roast and some chocolate. Caramel. Black pour. Bittersweet finish. Oily like environmentally disturbed seals. Bottle.
3.9 750 ml bottle shared with a group (also originally sampled at RBSG 2010) from notes. Pours dark brown to black in color with a small khaki colored head. The aroma and flavor have roasted malts, dark chocolate, coffee, caramel, dark fruit, tobacco, earthy bitterness, solid.
3.6 Type: 12-oz. can Glass: AleSmith Barrel-Aged Reserve snifter From: Bier:Thirty Bottle & Bistro in Boise, Idaho Price: $4.99 Purchased: April 21, 2017 Consumed: May 6, 2017 Reviewed as: Russian Imperial Stout Misc.: Enjoy by July 30, 2018 Picked this up with four others at Bier:Thirty on a recent work trip to Boise after getting a random 6-pack of cans earlier at Whole Foods. Looked quickly on Untappd to see that it had good ratings and picked it up. It was that quick. Poured a pitch black oily color with two fingers of frothy tan head. Very light bubbles coming up from the bottom of the glass. Decent lacing. Good retention. (Sight - 3.75) Lots of different notes in the nose. Got oak, molasses, barley, malt chocolate, cocoa, dark fruits, plum, toffee, black licorice, anise and vanilla cream. (Smell - 3.75) . Taste mainly followed the nose. Got roasted barley lead the way, followed by oak, molasses and milk chocolate. Vaguely reminded me of Founders Dirty Bastard. Also got toasted toffee, plum, earthy raisins, dark fruits, cocoa nibs, hints of anise and caramel syrup. Could taste that that booze early, but it mellowed late. (Taste - 4.00) Full body. Slick texture. Average carbonation. Long, smooth, warming finish. For sure the best part of the beer. (Feel - 4.25) This was a solid beer overall. Would have it again for sure. (Overall - 4.00) 3.95 89 B+
4.9 Outer Darkness has a thin, tan head, a dark brown, nearly black appearance, some glass lacing, and a bit of brown, around the edges. Aroma is of rich, dark-roasted malt, brown bread crust, and some chocolate. Taste is of those elements, with no unpleasant burnt or charred features. Mouthfeel is heavy and velvety, and Outer Darkness finishes rich and sip-able. RJT
3.3 Definitely getting molasses and licorice from the aroma, also chocolate and a bit of spice. Nice jet black color with a brown head. Tastes a little watery, some sharp roast up front and more of the molasses/licorice, but odd tasting. Thin palate, overall it was just okay. I probably wouldn’t drink this again.
4.0 Pours black with a creamy tan head, quickly dissipates, spotty lace. Aroma of chocolate, licorice, toasted nuts, mint. Creamy and silky on the tongue. Chocolate, Kahlua, nuttiness, lactose, licorice... Nice lingering roast finish.
4.4 Can - Pours black, creamy tan head. Aroma of dark roasted malts, chocolate, nuts, coffee, and scorched pancakes. Flavorful tastes of bakers chocolate muffins, hints of coffee and wood. Bitter hops presence.
4.3 The viscosity as I poured this jet black brew was noticeable. A small mocha head left quickly. The nose shows coffee, chocolate and faint liquorice. Bittersweet . You need teeth to bite through the middle of this beer; full bodied blackened malt, liquorice, cherries, hint of caramel, and a large helping of molasses. The finish is sticky on the tongue, bittersweet, and silky malt smoothness. ABV lays very low, and very dangerous. Decidely good.
4.4 An aroma of roasty malt, chocolate and coffee with hints of fruits. Black with a dark brown long lasting foam. High sweetness and light-medium bitterness - really great taste. Soft carbonation, creamy texture and full body. Wonderful.
4.2 Aroma is slightly burnt toast, dark fruit and dark malts. The flavor is slightly burnt toast, dark fruit, mild/medium sweetness in the middle, dark malts and an acidic/slightly sour finish.
4.2 Can. Aroma is a little sweet, roasty, coffee. Dark black color, inky, beige head, little lacing. Flavors abound! A little sweet, caramel. Full body, creamy, inky mouthfeel. Awesome RIS.
3.7 A very decent Russian imperial stout. Super dark, almost more bitter than sweet. Lots of chocolate and coffee.
4.0 750 mL bottle from Discount Beverage, 12/9/16. Near black, thin head. Aroma of roasted malts, molasses, chocolate, nuts, herbal hops. The taste is milk and dark chocolate, herbal hops, roasted, molasses, burnt sugar, hints of cherry. Slick, medium-full bodied, mild booze. Quite nice.
4.3 On tap at the Public House. Wow, so much going on, heaps of chocolate, a bit of liquorice, definitely a sipper but so worth it.
4.2 #500. Bottle bought at Squatters in 2013. The aroma is malt, raisin/dates, some caramel. Pours dark brown, almost black with big creamy/frothy head and excellent lacing. The taste is bitter, lot of licorice. The body is medium/full, the texture creamy, the carbonation lively and the finish bitter and long. This is meant to drink slowly and it does age very well!
5.0 Incredibl, rich black, silky, malty with a molasses sweetness, maybe one of the finest imperial stouts I’ve ever had. This beer is spectacular
4.4 Deep inky black with a thin light beige head. Rich super dark nose that’s roasty and black malt grainy with some deep licorice and more black malt. Rich toasty and semisweet flavor that’s grainy and dark and gently smokey and boozy. Semisweet grainy tones to provide the sweetness. Dark and rich.
