St-Feuillien & Green Flash / Bière De L'Amitié

St-Feuillien & Green Flash / Bière De L'Amitié

St. Feuillen’s centuries old brewing traditions combine with Green Flash Brewing Company’s cutting edge brewing techniques to form our first collaborative brew: Bière De L’Amitié (Friendship Brew). A blond Belgian collaboration ale, brewed with St. Feuillen’s traditional yeast and spices. For a modern twist, we add rye malt, wheat malt, and American Amarillo hops. At the crossroads of collaboration, we dry-hopped the brew for more zest. It’s old-world Belgian Abbey-style meets new-world American craft brewing - and a friendship is formed.

3.6 Bottle courtesy of delabierman. Huge billowy head, clear golden body. Rich malt backbone, some spice and hay / meadow on the palate. Mouthfell is slick and buttery.
3.6 Draught at Delirium. Pale, ever so slightly cloudy gold, white head, fades, great lacing. Usual Belgian nose, clove, banana, some fruity hops. Flavour is medium bitter backed by tripel characteristics. Fizzy, medium light body, fruity finish.
4.0 Bottle from South Bay Drugs: Almost didn’t notice this bottle since I expected Green Flash would have been bottling it. Created a monstrous formation of soapy foam while the liquid was a pale blondish color that had dense carbonation bubbles rising to the top. As for the nose, a spicy and soapy aroma dominates and has some scents in here that I just wouldn’t know what they were. Almost like a pine or jasmine smell with a distant aroma of lemon grass and root beer. The flavor was intensely spicy with an authentic strain of Belgian yeast, but not surprising since Green Flash has been known to brew up some tasty Belgian strong ales and as for St. Feuillien, making high quality ales is their thing. Has an undertone taste of lemon zest, coriander, and light touch of juniper berries. This is a heavy hitting combination of brewers and hit the spot on a sizzling summer day and after a week of no drinking.
4.2 Poured from a bomber into a St. Feuillien goblet a golden brew with a thick off white head Aroma of funk tells me we got Belgium yeast. Malty floral & citrus follows. Taste is classic abbey ale but with some citrus thrown into the barnyard. Totally a brew I would enjoy with a heavy meal. Overall I would say this a well above average collaboration brew & would easily buy again to share with others over dinner.
3.5 Pours a straw color with a large puffy white head. Notes of grass, cereal grains, candi sugar, and yeast.
3.6 750ml bottle pours a straw yellow with a large white head. Yeast and spice aroma. Lite apple and lemon zest taste. Very drinkable beer.
3.5 Yeasty aroma with some floral hops. Taste is bready with great Belgian character. Hint of extra hops added. Finishes with a bit of alcohol burn.
3.7 A golden amber ale with a thin white head. In aroma, sweet fruity malt with nice citrusy floral hops , California meets Belgium, nice and silky. In mouth, a great Belgian IPA with fruity esters, floral hops, citrus pulp, coriander, nice, complex and refreshing. Sampler at Battle of the Belgians at Jimmys 43 (as Belgian coast ipa).
4.3 A: Hazy Golden Straw Hue, Passes Some Light, Mild White Head, Some Lacing S: Belgian Sugar, Belgian Yeast, Lemon Zest T: Belgian Yeast, Belgian Sugar, Chardoman, Mild Corriander, Mild Lemon Zest M: Decent Carbonation, Medium Bodied, Semi Spicy, Mildly Yeasty Overall, a pretty nice blend between belgian ale and saison, easy drinking if you like both styles.
3.9 Bottled. Cloudy golden with a high, fine head. Nice citrus hop nose, oranges and peaches. Light spice, clean biscuity malt. Full, sweet malt flavor, quite spicy, big citrus hops. Nicely bitter finish. A bit on the sweet side, but very crisp and clean finish with great hops.
3.8 Location: 750 ml bottle from Central Market, 10/21/13 Aroma: The nose is fairly yeasty, lots of spice and funk, some light citrus zest Appearance: Pours a bright, clear golden color with a thick, frothy white head and heavy lace Flavor: The taste is heavy spicy/yeasty, as the nose would indicate, the funk it more subtle, but it is still present, there’s some citrus flavors, and it finishes with a not large, but noticeable hop bitterness Palate: The body is medium, leaning light, with a fizzy carbonation, and a dry finish Overall Impression: This is a really nice one. The mix of spice, funk, citrus zest, and hops works very nicely to make an interesting and tasty offering. I enjoyed this one more than I did the Friendship Brew Black Saison. Tasty.
3.8 Bottle Aroma: Bread, light fruit Appearance: Light hay with a slight white head Taste: Citrusy, light fruit Palate: Light mouthfeel, good carbonation Overall: Good complex, yet subtle flavors. Very enjoyable and comes across as a really good, slightly light belgian.
3.0 a bright, tangy, almost wheat like belgian golden ale. somewhat spicy with a better hop backbone than most. pretty neat.
3.7 Bottle, says 06/06/14. Thin, big bubbly white head, dissipates quickly. Vibrant, cloudy dark orange body, yellow hue. Minty, spicy malt, bubblegum, strawberry candy fruitiness. Hint of paint volatiles. A lot going on. Minty up front, spicy from malts more than yeast, not-so-smooth rye taste. Big warming booze feel at the back without booze taste. Numbs the mouth with lingering notes of pink bubblegum, slightly dry/powdery. Lively carbonation. Hops mute at this point. Solid Tripel with tons of complexity. Flavors are so soft which is confusing with the numbing alcohol affect.
3.6 August 2010: St. Feuillien/Green Flash Bière De L’Amitié ... Aroma: Lightly peppery with some lemon, a slight staleness; nutty. Appearance: Pale golden color; large, foamy, off-white head. Flavor: Fruity maltiness with hints of spice and wintergreen/mint; high alcohol is evident. Palate: Medium body; soft, smooth texture. Overall: Nothing special. Draught (9.5% ABV) at Buckeye Beer Engine in Cleveland, OH. Rating #249 for this beer. Score: 7/3/7/3/13=3.3 . . . . . . . . . . 3/16/2011: St. Feuillien and Green Flash Brewing Co. Bier De L’Amitie Collaboration Ale (Brewed with Spices)... Aroma: Citrus peel, fruity, floral, lightly sour/vinegar; rubbing alcohol. Appearance: Cloudy, opaque marigold yellow color; dense, frothy off-white head that lasts; fast carbonation. Flavor: Yeasty and spicy; fruity sweetness; starts like a Wheat Ale/Hefe, the has a dry middle and becomes very much like a Tripel; the citrusy Amarillo hops come through with a mild, well-balanced bitterness; sharp, alcohol and white pepper finish. Palate: Medium-bodied; well-carbonationed; slightly sticky on the lips. Overall: Really nice brew; complex and quite enjoyable. 1 pt 9.4 fl. oz. corked and caged bottle (Alc 9.5% by Vol; 22/04/12 ) shared by Tmoney99. Thanks Tom! Score: 7/3/8/4/16=3.8
3.7 Shared with some none beer folk who really enjoyed it. Pours cloudy yellow with nice lasting white head. Nose is spice and fruity ester, banana. More spicy, banana, clove, esters through the glass with a medium body. For the abv it was moderately refreshing with medium dry finish. Not too shabby here.

3.8 Sample at the Aficionado’s "Hidden Gems" beer tasting on 05/24/2013: Pours a hazy orange-gold color with a medium thick foamy white head that recedes slowly. Patchy lacing on the glass. Aroma of yeast, grainy malt and hops. Medium to full body with flavors of sweet spices, bready malt, yeast and hops. The finish is nutmeg and yeast with a citrus aftertaste. Pretty good all around.
2.7 This corked and caged bottled brew from a bottle shop poured a very large sized head of foamy finely sized white colored bubbles that were very long lasting and left behind a softly carbonated transparent yellow colored body and a thick foamy lacing. The mild aroma was orange peel and musty. The mild citrus mildly vinous mouth feel was tingly at the start and at the finish with a medium fruity aftertaste. The mild flavor contained notes of bitter sassafras mild citrus yeast mildly vinous mild spice coriander hops and bread dough. A decent one that I would consider drinking again.

4.0 Citrus nose. Pours a hazy straw yellow with a mostly lasting white head. The taste is mildly tart - citrus, grain, with hints of a white wine. Typical Saison with a dry crisp finish. Medium-light body with crisp carbonation. Overall, an excellent example PDA Saisonz

3.8 The best of California and Belgium. Citrusy and yeasty nose .Golden pour, light fruity. body is not too sticky yet full. Finish is bitter sweet and not too boozy. good collab.
3.5 It's true a nice traditional Belgian blonde with a touch of west coast flair... Nice and citrusy with the little moderately spicy classic Belgian flavors... Good beer...$12 makes it a treat not legendary enough to repeat but good beer
4.0 Grassy wheat aroma with some bubblegum, spice, and Belgian yeast. Sweet/tart flavor with some citrus and spice. Finish is bittersweet with more spice and some grassy hops. Different and really good.
4.4 Draft at Butcher & the Boar. Saffron in the nose? Regardless, fresh and fruity. Really outstanding. Some lace, faint white ring of head. Some funk. Phenomenal.
3.3 Draught at Gingerman NYC. Pours cloudy gold with a medium white head. Aroma is typical belgian yeast and some hops. There is a hoppy bite in the taste with some grassy, yeasty, citrus notes. A nice collaboration.
3.5 A soft pour into my Bruery tulip produces a four-finger thick (including a finger above the rim of the glass), pale, off white head. The beer is a rich gold color that shows a bright, brilliantly clear, yellow-gold hue when held up to the light. The aroma smells of a mix of balanced spices, hay like notes, citrus & tropical fruit, and a backing, pale grain character. A second, more focused, look at the nose yields a really juicy, tropical fruit laden, Amarillo hop character; floral peach, lychee, candied mango, and juicy fruit bubble gum aromatics seem to jump out of the glass. Spicy notes of musty white pepper, ginger, lemon zest, and perhaps some earthy spice notes (sort of coriander like, but cleaner) play a soft, accentuating, and supporting role in the nose. Dry for a split second, then fruity hops and esters along with a pale malt character contribute a sweetness to this beer. Peach juice, apricot nectar, lychee, ripe guava, and bright kumquat are all brought out by the hop notes. The finish has a grassy, sort of herbal note, a slight peppery, green wood character, as well as spicy from esters and fairly smooth higher alcohols; this can even get a bit sterile / medicinal at times in the finish. The beer is fairly light bodied, but does have some viscosity, but much of this is scrubbed clean by the ample, effervescent carbonation that at times can even seem foamy. Not a bad beer in the end. I definitely like that the hop character comes through so well and that the spices merely play a supporting role. Having said that the fermentation character can clash just a bit with the hops at times, but still, overall this is kept in check. Despite it getting a little sharp in the finish, this beer is dangerously quaffable for a beer of this strength.
