St. George Porter

St. George Porter

St. George Porter weaves a complex tapestry of flavors in a black, ruby colored ale. A rich malt base, typical of St. George Ales, results in caramel and chocolate tones, classically balanced with English bittering and aromatic hops.

3.5 Bottle at home, extra’d in a trade. Pour is dark brown, almost black with a medium brown head and great lacing. Big roasty, coffee, light vanilla, graham crackers, bread, leather, and black licorice in the aroma. Taste is bready, grassy, chewy leather, light cocoa and espresso, a touch earthy, and grassy with a light roasted finish. Medium body with soft carbonation. Not bad, but could use a little sweetness and a touch more body, though I do appreciate the sessionable characteristics. Not bad.
3.6 Tap. Black color, tan head, lots of lacing. Very faint aroma, hints of milk chocolate? Hard to say. Flavor is much more pronounced. Reminiscent of a milk stout but dominated by roasty bitterness on the end.
3.8 Caramel, mild cocoa, and nutty aromas. Clear brown-black with a fading, beige head. Off-dry with some sweet malty flavors, and nice roasty tones. Light-medium bodied with low carbonation, smooth, and finishes with some lingering nutty and chocolatey flavors.
3.1 I asked for a Founders Porter but had to settle for the St. George. I’m glad I gave it a go.
3.2 Pours black with a lightly tan fine head. Roasty, chocolate flavor. Mouthfeel is moderate. Chocolate and coffee flavors are there. Pretty good Porter.
4.3 pitch black with good and deep aroma of chocolate. vibrant light brown foam that is cola like and adds that dimension to the flavor. chocolate with some bitter and roasted to it. it has a sweetness to the finish. some silk to the body.
3.5 12 oz bottle courtesy of RABinVA. Pours a standard dark brown with an inch of creamy tan head. Good head retention with some lazy rings of lace. Roasty, chocalate aroma with a nice sweetness. Sweet flavor with touches of cream and vanilla. Light sweetness in the mouth with a medium body. Very enjoyable.
3.1 Pours clear dark brown with a tall. sticky, light tan head. Very soft malt aroma. Lightly sweet with some roast malts, but a lot less than what a good porter should have in my opinion. More like a Schwarzbier.
3.3 Bottle. Pours dark brown with a slight tan head that fades fast. Big toasty malt aroma with a hit of sweetness. Taste is a bit of chocolate, caramel, and coffee with toasted malt back that lingers on the tongue.
3.7 Pours from the 12 oz. bottle a very dark, cola-ish reddish brown with a large rocky beige head. Too dark to tell what kind of bubble action is occurring in the darkness. Aroma is of roasted, smoky malt. 1st sip brings to mind dark unsweetened chocolate and black coffee. Mouthfeel is on the light side. Overall, a tasty, refreshing Porter that I would not mind having again.
3.3 On draft in "Germany" within Busch Gardens in Williamsburg, VA. Very dark brown/black in complexion with slightly watery body. Not bad, but I was expecting a more flavorful porter.
0.5 Opaque dark mahogany with a rediculously foamy tan head. Medium body with very high carbonation. Aroma: black roasted malt, sugury crystal malt, astringent harsh grassy character, dark chocolate. Taste: Malt sweetness, roasted malt, grainy astringency. Either a minor infection or a serious water chemistry problem. My bet is on the first -it’s undrinkable.
4.1 12 ounce bottle. Served in a pint glass, the beer pours dark brown/black with a half inch tan head that stayed around for a while. There’s also a good amount of lacing. The brew smells like roasted malt, bittersweet chocolate, coffee, and some caramel. It tastes like roasted malt, milk and bittersweet chocolate, caramel, cream, and a bit of burnt/charred malt. Mouthfeel/body is medium, it’s creamy with a moderate amount of carbonation. I think this is a pretty good brew. One of my friends picked up a single bottle of this for me on a recent trip, and if it was available in my area I would certainly buy this beer again.
3.2 Aug 2009: Brown 12 oz bottle flown over to me by a Virginia based BA. Poured into a Westmalle chalice glass, one of my favourite tasting glasses. Deep, dark browny/red body with (sadly) a small wisp of a tan half head which soon turned into a thin collar around the glass. Intense dark chocolate aroma, then dry roasted coffee and toasted chocolate malts. The taste copied the smells, only a drier hint to everything and the hops coming in to add a bitterness that bit into my tongue and cheeks. Well carbonated and a good richness considering its alcohol content isn’t trying to rip your head off like some Porters attempt to do. All in all a very pleasant beer and glad it came my way.
2.7 Poured dark brown with a full brown head that dissipated slowly. Minimal aroma; a bit of sweet maltiness. Slightly smoky, somewhat bland flavor, with a dry end. A bit oily in mouthfeel. This is an ok beer, but is extremely undistinctive and unmemorable. Actually less like a porter than the St. George American Brown Ale in my opinion.
3.2 Strong malt aroma with a light amount of hops. Dark color with a medium brown head. Light sweet throughout with a moderate bitter finish.
3.7 Bottle. Rich aroma of chocolate, coffee, some malt caramel. Dark brown, clear, pours with a decent dark tan head. Medium body, creamy, carbonation is lively for a porter, finish is a bitter and good. Very positive
3.7 12 oz. bottle shared by Coopers Kid- thanks, Andy! Pours a deep, dark brown with amber highlights and a small beige ring for a head. Aroma of roasted malts, chocolate, banana bread, and toasted caramel. The flavor also has the unexpected banana bread- which doesn’t by any means overwhelm- along with chocolate, toasted brown sugar, mild coffee, and some dark fruits. Medium-bodied, with low carbonation and a smooth, rich mouthfeel. Almost drinks like an imperial porter. I enjoyed this a lot and expect Andy to bring me some more from these guys!
3.3 Fresh 12oz bottle from the brewery. Nice looking, dark brown pour and a bubbly brown head. Nice lacing. Sweet chocolate in the aroma. Nice flavor too but maybe a little thin. The chocolate doesn’t appear in the flavor until the finish.
3.5 Pours dark brownish black with nice lacing tan head. Aroma has notes of chocolate, roast, some earth, slight burnt caramel and toast notes. Taste is fairly nice with a relatively full body for the ABV, nice sweet toffee and caramel, some bitter roast and coffee, some slight cocoa powder, touch of earth and grass, finishing dry and bitter. Nice beer, very easy drinking yet still full flavored.
2.7 Poured into a white wine glass (that’s all that was available) at The Cheese Shop in Williamsburg. A: 3.5 S: 3.0 T: 3.5 M: 3.0 D: 3.0 Dark brown, nearly black. Just a touch of light brown head. Average retention and little lacing. Dry, lightly roasty nose. Taste has a good bit graininess as well, with more neutral malt sweetness than I was expecting, but still rather dry overall. Roasty toastiness, but not a ton of flavor overall. Lighter medium body. Good moderate carbonation. Could use more body. Good creaminess for how light it is. Better than some of their other beers, but still no treat.
3.7 Pours a deep brown color with a light tan head. Has a light chocolate aroma. Nice chocolate flavor with a smooth balanced bitter finish. Medium body. A nice beer.
2.7 I didn’t really enjoy this porter at all. I thought it poured nice but was very watery with a little bit of roasted flavor.
3.8 Dark with a light tan head. Lightly roasted aroma, some molasses, nutty, chocolate, light spicy earth notes. Thin body. Nice chocolatey malt, a touch of roast, some caramel, and mild nutty notes. Finish has a touch of bittersweet malt. Top-notch porter.
3.0 12oz bottle, poured into snifter glass, great frothy tan head, a bit of oakiness to the aroma, great spider lacing, interesting booziness for only a 5% beer. The mouthfeel does not do this beer justice at all, really watery, really weak, not much, a bit of roastiness, but not much else. Too bad.
3.5 Location: 12 oz bottle from jcos, 3/13/11 Aroma: It has a roasty and smokey aroma, malt heavy, some chocolate and caramel notes Appearance: It pours into the glass a dark brown color with a small beige head, light lace Flavor: This one has a nice smooth roasted porter flavor, burnt, chocolate, and smoke notes too Palate: The mouthfeel is well-rounded, medium (plus) bodied, with a fairly smooth and clean finish to it Overall Impression: Thanks Justin! (I’m getting use to writing that since you hooked me up with so many beers!) Anyway, I was relatively impressed with this one. A solid example of the style that does what it sets out to do.
3.5 12oz bottle. Pours a dark reddish brown color with a thick tan foamy head, that had good retention and lacing. Light roasty grains with some sweet creamy cocoa in the aroma. Taste starts with sweet milk chocolate and malt flavor, then finishes with bitter dark chocolate and a bit of roasted coffee. Just the right balance of bitter and sweet. Medium bodied, crisp and a bit chewy.
2.9 Appearance: very dark brown to black, short beige head, that fades quickly. Aroma: typical porter aroma--bitter chocolate, a bit of coffee, a bit of stone and some hops . Taste: dry-roasted coffee beans, bitter dark chocolate, hint of vanilla, cream and caramel balanced by generous English hoppyness. Finish: dry, a little tangy, a little musty, with a bit of mineral/chemical undertones. Notes: Pretty typical porter. Palate was a little light, and the finish was mediocre but the appearance and flavors were totally acceptable for the style.
3.7 Bottle. Pours a near black with a dense khaki head that fades pretty rapidly, but leaves some nice lace in the process. The aroma is dead on style--roasty with hints of vanilla, dark chocolate, and dark fruit. There is also a noticeable hop character to the aroma. The flavor is less complex, but still balanced and good. Mostly roasted malt and coffee on the flavor. Medium to light bodied with medium carbonation. Overall: just a very solid porter. Nice for this winter night.
3.3 Aroma: A very yeasty aroma, with little malt or hops. Almost smells rotten, like dirty socks. Appearance: Black, with a frothy tan head. Taste: Medium Sweetness, light bitterness with a hint of saltiness in the finish. Palate: Medium body with a thin texture. Lively carbonation and a bitter finish. Overall: Very disappointed with this beer. It looked nice the in glass, but failed on every other level. Smelled bad, tasted weak, little flavor or character. Some toastiness and hints of chocolate, but I was left wanting more. I almost felt like I was drinking a black, toasty Budweiser. Pretty disappointing beer.
