St. Paul Speciale

St. Paul Speciale

The St. Paul Speciale is an amber coloured, high-fermented abbey beer of Brouwerij Sterkens. This beer was brewed according to the so-called purity law of 1516. Thanks to the dryhopping technique, which adds hops after the fermentation, it has a sweet, fruity aroma with notes of caramel and malt. The Speciale has a rich, sweet and slightly bitter taste.

3.3 Bottle from LDW, Eke. Hazy amber colour, white foam. Lively carbonation (a tad too much), sweet malts, light bitter. Easy drinkable.

3.4 33cl bottle. Dark reddish appearance with long lasting medium head. Aroma of malts, caramel, yeast, raisins. Taste is quite similar to aroma. I was expecting it to be sweeter and more complex. Still nice and balanced beer. Mouthfeel is nice, full and a bit oily with soft carbonation.
3.4 Bottle 33cl, a cloudy amber brown beer with good head and retention. Nose is on caramel and cady sugar, belgian yeast. Aroma is dominant on candy sugar and toasted caramel, a kind of dubble just with less alcohol. Body has fruit notes such as plum, toffee notes, finish is a bit spicy with cinnamon. Nice one.
3.2 Dark brown color with off-white head. Aroma of caramel and a little spicy. Taste is fruity, malty with a soft sweet undertone.
Mediocre.

2.9 330ml bottle bought at Belgian Beer International in Tsuen Wan. Cloudy hazy dark amber brown colour with traces of dirt-like yeast sediments One finger head with crumpety beige foams which lasts for 90 seconds; Very good sticky lacing with slight carbonation; Quite fragrant aroma of light roasted malt, with brown sugar, light caramel, and light Bel yeast; Close to light sweet taste of roasted malt, with metallic, light sourness, nuts, notes of molasses, faint notes of red fruits, light phenolic, light bread, very light Bel yeast, thin lemon and very light bitter grassy hops; Mid to light body. Slick and slightly creamy palate; Mouth feel is stripped-down Dubbel - solid thick body, creamy and malty with pretty good roastyness, but devoid of fruity esters, sweetness and yeast. Quite metallic and strong sour notes, not really annoying though. Otherwise pretty solid. Okay… Hoppiness is only thin lemon, and light grass in taste. Bitterness is low but notable for a mildly astringent semi-finish; Fairly dry after taste, quite easy and creamy to mouth. Comments: An entry level Belgian Dark with taste more like a stripped-down Dubbel. Pretty solid despite being take away the sweetness, esters, booze and Bel yeast. Way better than macros like Palm Speciale or Grimbergen Dubbel. Simple and easy, quite enjoyable.
