Starr Hill Amber Ale

Starr Hill Amber Ale

Starr Hill Amber Ale is an award-winning Irish Red Ale. Brewed in the tradition of the great English ales, its rich honey color hints at its smooth, caramel flavoring. With a medium body and slightly sweet finish, this is an extremely drinkable brew that is characterized by rich malt taste and low bitterness.

3.1 Bottle->SA. reddish brown with light head. Aroma: malt, bread, hint of hops. Taste: toasted malt with some hops on the finish. Unremarkable but very drinkable.
3.2 Bottle. Pours clear copper with a small white head. The aroma Is malty with some biscuit and bread. The taste is biscuit with a malty sweetness.
3.5 This ale is awesome. Very smooth with a bittersweet finish and some great malt tones. Very good and refreshing
2.8 12oz bottle, thanks to Andrew. Bottled 6/27/12. Good thin khaki head, clear darker amber color. Some half-loose lace. Really nice impressive toasty hop lighter caramel aroma. Nice smooth lighter carbonation, dry finish. Texture is just fine. Taste is light sweet, light bitter. Very much on the toasty side for an amber, than the caramel sweet side - which is fine for me, personally. Some odd fruitiness. Light chocolate. Definitely an odd brew for the style. Lightly buttery. Lightly smokey. Cereal. It’s alright. Goes good at the end of a friday night with some savory hummus and pita.
3.3 Draught at the hyatt in crystal city. Reddish brownish pour, mild sweetness and malts. Ok, nothing special.
3.4 12 oz bottle from Giant. Pours amber with a thick, long lived white head and a good amount of lacing. Aroma is of grassy, piney hops, bready malt and hints of cherry. Body is medium and tangy. Earthy hops and caramel malt nicely balanced on the palate, hints of cherry. Long finish becomes bitter. Good session brew.
3.6 Originally reviewed: 11/5/08. Had this beer on tap at First Street Draught House here in Winston. Came out a deep amber color with a pretty small head. Fairly good retention and minimal lacing along the edges. Smell of deep floral hops. Sweet smelling brew. Good carmel-esque taste going on here. Slight bitter hops on the finish. Malt sweetness balances this out well. I guess this is an English Pale, but labeled an Amber. Doesn’t come across with the common Amber characteristics. Pretty good red ale that I would get again if offered.
3.3 Bottle. Pours a hazy amber color with a small cream head. Nose is bready, apricotty and juicy. Palate is full with a big bite. Flavors of apricots, floral hops, biscuits.
3.0 Starr Hill hasn’t let me down yet. Their Amber Ale reminds me a lot of Newcastle Brown. That’s a good thing. There’s just a little more bitterness here than classic Newcastle, but I’m not complaining about that, either. That hoppy bite is just about right, not too much, but enough to let you know it’s there. It’s not a life-changing beer, but another solid effort from Starr Hill.
2.8 From tap. Amber with a tan head. Smells very malty. Taste is lots of sweet toasted malts, hay, and a touch of dry hops. After taste is thin and a just bit skunky. That’s not cool, because it was almost good, just something is really a little bit off about this.
3.0 The airport: Pours a reddish color with a white head. Aroma is just a bunch of malt without any complexity. Taste is much the same. Barely any hops are to be had in this beer. A little bit sweet. Just generally generic methinks.
3.2 Pours dark rich amber with a lot of bubbles flowing o a creamy tan head. The aroma is richly sweet malty and clean with just a bit of bitter hops. The body is certainly crisp almost more like a lager.
2.9 From a bottle poured a brown color with a small amount of head. Bitter malty flavor with a lingering finish.
2.9 12 ounce bottle. Pours a clear amber with a small off-white head. Aroma of malt, caramel, grain and some hops. Taste is somwhat sweet malt, grain and citrus. Pretty good.
2.7 Not really my thing but not terrible. Light, sweet. But its a Virginia beer so I always feel good trying them out.
3.3 Draught @ Cafe Diem: This one pours a darker amber color. Small off-white head, but it left lots of lacing. Nice nose. Caramel malt and some earthy and floral hops. The taste is good. Malty, just a slight amount of sweetness. Nicely balanced and pretty easy drinking. Slight dryness to the finish. Worth checking out.
3.0 Draft @ Capital Ale House, Richmond, VA. Pours a clear amber color with a small off-white head. Has a fruity malty caramel aroma. Fruity malty caramel flavor. Has a fruity malty caramel finish.
2.7 Thin copper pour. Modest nondescript aroma. There is a light citrus taste that moves towards a sweet grass finish. Not bad, nothing special.
1.9 bottle - pours a deep, slightly cloudy amber with a minimal off-white head. Aroma is faint, but has notes of caramel and metal. Taste reminds me of seltzer water, but with a bit more weight. A little lingering bitterness in the finish. Well, it’s drinkable.
2.2 Not a lot of aroma or taste out of this one. You’re in trouble when the most interesting thing about your beer is that it looks drinkable.
2.9 Tap. Clearer coppery brown color with a slightly off-white head with decent curtains of lacing. Caramel, toffee, and minerals in the aroma. Earhy hop presence, but very minimal, and very malt-driven with some fruit and toffee to finish. Thinner, but slick body.
2.6 Pours a clear, dark bronze, with a off-white head. Aroma of caramel, malts, and a little nutty. Flavor and mouth feel are very soft to medium, with notes of malts, fruit, and a little nutty. Finishes a little metallic and bitter
2.5 Bottle courtesy of llcooldave. Pours amber with a light fluffy head. Smell is slightly sweet, but it doesn’t really smell like anything inparticular. It’s thin and lightly carbonated. Taste is a little "tinny" with slight sweetness and maltiness. Average at best.
3.0 12oz bottle thanks to llcooldave. Poured a clear amber body with some head and a bit of lacing. Aromas of nuts, lightly malty and grainy hops. Flavors of light sweetness, caramel, medium floral/grassy bitter hops. Thin to medium mouthfeel.
2.3 355 mL bottle. Mild aroma has a tiny bit of grainy malt and caramel. I think. Hard to tell. Flavour is similarly non-existent. Nothing bad; nothing there at all. Maybe some tin. Touch of indistinct hops. Something off at the end. Unnecessary.
2.0 an uninspiring amber that has the primary flavor characteristic (and aroma) of rustic metal complete with the caustic and chalky stainless steel finish. a bit of grapefruit citrus pith in a malt with nondescript sweetness that cannot help with the situation. bottle dated before Jan. soap in aroma as well.
3.1 Pours a dark amber with a little camel colored head which dissipated quickly. Taste is light malt and some caramel. The body is light and watery and aroma is hoppy. Drinkable but I have had better amber ales.
3.0 Tasted from a bottle given to me as a trade extra. Pours clear, dark amber with a very thick off white head that recedes quickly, but leaves heavy lace. Nose is toasted bread malt with some earthiness, hops, and something unmistakably metallic smelling. The taste is a nice blend of the toasty bread malts and a nice hoppiness along with a bit of nuttiness and that metallic thing. The body is light with a somewhat oily texture, average carbonation, and a medium bitter and nutty finish.
2.8 Bottle. I’m guessing its probably amber in color. Grainy, burnt, metallic, creme, and sun flow seeds, with some citrus hops. BLAH I hate this style.
2.9 Bottle pours a hazy amber/red. Light scent of malt. Taste is sweet malts with high carbonation.
