4.0Bottle - Pours a clear copper with a fairly big, frothy head that left some lacing. Great aromas of grapefruit, tangerine, and some pine. Juicy mouth feel with the aromas continuing. Some bitterness with the finish. My kind of beer.
3.6Bottle 355ml @ Hotel room, The Breakers Hotel, Rehoboth
Beach, DE
Pours clear deep golden with a off-white head. Aroma has notes of malt, caramel, citrus, grape and pine. Taste is medium sweet and medium bitter with a long malty, citrus and grape finish. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft.
3.5Bottle. A hazy, dark golden to amber beer with a small, off-white head. The aroma is rather piney, with resins, pine cones and a touch of pale malts. Bitterness, pale malts, resins and a nice citrusy, piney hoppyness. Full body and a nice carboonation level, with some palte malts, resins and grapefruit peel. Lasting resiny finish. Not bad this one, but nothing extraordinary going on. 150621
3.3Bottle. The pour is a rich vibrant orange, looks nice. The aroma is full of citrus hops. The taste is very bland, almost watered down, which doesn't match the color or the aroma.
2.8Drank from a twelve ounce bottle, thank you Bjorn. Has a nice sweet but still nice being hop forward. Good initial complexity, with a finish slighty toward the tale end of being too hoppy.
3.5Coppery gold in color with a whitish head. Full, strong, punchy with a lot of bitter hoppiness. Pine, resin, citrus zest. Not too heavy, not too earthy.
4.0Bottle from local grocer.. Color is a subtle amber with hints of gold almost a whiskey hue.. Very light aroma,, nothing punches my nose immediately. Light floral at best.. Now the palate.. Very crisp, and hop infused.. Notes of syrup linger on the backside... I wish it had more of those attacking hops that the west coast made famous but I realize this ISNT a Westcoast DIPA.... all in all its a great brew. Dare I say it almost has a hint of Pliney the Younger in it.. Or is that blasphemous??
3.2Bottle to shaker glass. Pours clear copper, quick head, little lace, no real retention. Aroma of spruce, grapefruit. Taste is bitter, slight sweet caramel underneath. Medium bodied, light carbonation, sticky mouth feel. Finishes bitter. Tasting notes of hop oils, pine, grapefruit, caramel and booze. Expected more from this one. It’s ok.
3.1Pours (from growler) a near clear amber with very large khaki head and very sticky lacing. Aroma of a pretty good amount of citrus hops with a bit of pine and resin. Flavour of floral and earthy up front with some dry piny flavor and a decent amount of bitterness that lingers through to the finish. Comes across with a syrupy mouthfeel.
3.6Pours a solid amber color with no head retention and some lacing. Tastes bitter and malty, but not too hoppy. If there were more hops, it would be excellent, but it is good.
3.012 oz bottle into a Chimay goblet.
A: Pours a beautiful copper color. The head is a two finger, barely off-white shade. The latter has all the aesthetic ticks I like: creamy texture, decent (not wonderful) retention, and impressive rings of lacing left on the glass. This is a damn good looking DIPA - maybe head retention could be better to get an even higher score, but that’s nitpicking.
S: Its hop profile is primarily herbal/piny, with vague hints of grapefruit and melon. Malts are existent yet tucked away, as they should be. I’ve encountered some mindblowing DIPA aromas in the past - this isn’t one of those instances. It’s not a particularly intense smell. Nonetheless, it’s pleasantly hoppy in all the right places.
T: Bitter right from the onset, and unfortunately lacking nuanced hop flavors - it’s just bitterness for the sake of bitterness. That’s never a good thing. Ergo, its the malt backbone providing most of the flavor profile, bringing lots of toffee, undefined caramel, and something suggesting earth. Some wisps of floral hop notes try their hardest to come through...and at times, they do. Still, I’m not a fan of these kind of DIPAs.
M: At least it has that crisp bite I enjoy from a good IPA/DIPA. This gives it great drinkability for the first 6 oz. While it grows a bit stickier afterwards, it never really becomes undrinkable, even with the less-than-appealing flavor profile. Carbonation isn’t that strong.
O: Did I ever mention how I dislike hoppy beers that are all bitterness, no flavor? Having said that, it’s not entirely past redemption - it’s pretty easy to drink due to its crispness. Beers like this are proving that DIPAs can be *very* hit-or-miss with my taste buds (look at my reviews for Enjoy By, DirtWolf, and Double Jack for proof). Caveat emptor, my friends: look elsewhere unless you enjoy sweet-yet-bitter DIPAs.
3.8Pleasantly surprised, especially for being 6 months old. A good dose of orange on a malt foundation of pale, caramel and biscuit malts. Citrus pith and a quick little alcohol burst before finishing with more bitter citrus pith.
3.6Atlanta, Ga. - Total Wine - Perimeter - 12 oz bottle. Sparkling medium copper pour, sticky off-white head, decent film of lacing, Aroma has some solid patented spruce hoppy notes, a hint of cat urine. Flavor is solid with some syrupy hoppy citrus bitter notes, some sweet caramel notes, a bit of cake mix sweetness. Thickish mouthfeel. Pleasantly surprised.
3.6Bottle. Nice pine & citrus scent. Pours a reddish golden color with a tan head. Great balance of hops and malt. Piney, grapefruit, earthy, and malt flavor. Creamy texture with some crisp dryness at the end. One of my favorite Starr Hill brews.

Poured from bottle into a pint glass
Appearance – Pours a slightly hazed reddish-orange-amber color with a small white head. The head fades rather fast leaving patches of foam on the surface and a super light lace on the sides of the glass.
Smell – The aroma is big and bready with a good dose of tangerine and caramel. Along with these more malty aromas are some rather big hoppy aromas of a grapefruit citrus hop and some resinous pine smells. A rather strong alcohol smell is there as well giving it a rather malty and citrusy warming smell overall.
Taste – The taste begins with a dry cracker and biscuit flavor mixed with some tangerine and a rather strong grapefruit hop taste. As the taste moves on, the taste dries out a bit as some tangerine fades away. While this occurs, some pine and a bit of grassy hop comes to the tongue. These flavors add quite a bit of resinous bitterness to the flavor profile, which take the taste to its end where a resinous hopped and semi-sweet malt flavor of a cracker and biscuit nature is left to linger on the tongue.
Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is on the average to slightly thicker and chewier side with a carbonation level that is on the average side. The thicker body is rather nice for the hopped and resinous flavors of the brew and made it a slow sipper
Overall –A little unbalanced, starting sweeter and drying out with a decent grapefruit and resinous hop coming to the tongue. While slightly unbalanced it is good and hoppy, so if you are looking for something of the like, then give it a go.
2.6Keg @ Starr Hill. Deep amber with a small head. Nose is strongly resinous. Caramel malt and citrus. Taste is dominated by caramel. Some orange candies. Booze. Nothing refined about this. Medi body, oily. Needs work.
3.8Pours a lightly hazy amber with a medium bubbly off white head. Aroma of caramel malt, light toasted malt and citrusy hops. Flavor of toasted malt, caramel, pine and grapefruit.
3.6Bottled. Clear orangey brown pour with white head from bottle. Citrus and a bit of malts. PRetty drinkable for a IIPA, not too much booze taste. Pretyy good.
3.5Poured an amber color with aromas of malt, light caramel, floral hops and some light pine. Flavors are the same malt forward followed by some pine and light citrus, lightly hopped for a DIPA more malt forward.
3.2Basic citrussy and grassy hops aromas. Really pretty looks, color and a thick foamy head. Way better on tap then bottle. Smooth, caramel, grassy, syrupy, hides the alcohol content.
2.0Cask - Mostly a pine smell on the nose. There is some hops on the palate but mostly a pine taste. It was really hard to get past the pine smell/taste on this beer. I was expecting more of a hop flavor on this DIPA but I didn’t get it. Pine covers the high alcohol content on this one.
3.8Aromas of citrusy, piney, and floral hops, some bready malts. Clear amber with burnt copper highlights, and a fully lasting satiny off-white head. Off-dry, some aromatic, floral hop notes, a nice malt cushion. Medium bodied, pretty darn smooth.
3.6First had this 4 years ago when I was beginning my craft beer journey up in the Virginia mountains. Severals years later this still holds up as very solid double ipa. Easy drinking iipa with lots of caramel, floral, medium citrus. Quite balanced if you like that kind of thing.
3.6Tasty beer, but too malt-forward for a double IPA, IMO. That said, it does have some tasty malt flavors of toast, caramel and brown sugar. Hops are grassy, floral and somewhat citrusy. Balanced bitterness. Fruity alcohol. As a "beer" it’s pretty solid. As a "double IPA" it’s way too malty.
3.9Starr Hill’s best offering. Look- amber with sticky head. Best way to describe this IPA is "wet". Hops are floral, citrusy, spicy, lovely. Very good.
3.5Standard DIPA appearance, with an orange-amber colored clear body, one finger thick head, and lots of streamers. Why mess with success, right? The smell was a little subdued, as the hops didn’t hit me in the face. I could detect some grapefruit, and mandarin orange smells, as well as a bit of fresh cut hay. The taste was also not very hoppy to me. There was a herbal bitterness, and a touch of spice, but mid palette and finish was dominated by honey like malt. The sweetness overpowered the hops, but it was not a dark fruit like sweetness approaching barleywine character, but rather a sugary, syrupy taste, making this an odd DIPA. It did feel good and soft in the mouth, and the finish was clean. It was a different take on the style for sure. The closest similar beer I can think of is the Green Flash Green Bullet.
3.6Pours a clear amber with a reddish orange color. The head retention is rather nice with some lacing. The aroma is of citrus hop tones with minor pine and mild to moderate booze. In tasting I noticed how sweet this beverage was. It has a descent malt flavor but the malts were a tad overpowered by the sweetness and the mild bitterness of this beverage. The finish was rather enjoyable with a sweet malty flavor reappearing and a lingering bitterness. Overall I enjoyed this more than I thought, it was a spontaneous choice.
3.412 oz bottle pours an orange color with a nice white head. Aromas of pine, grapefruit, lots of citrus. Full bodied, nicely balance with the malt, a nice beer.
3.8I really like this dipa, my first VA beer. Drank it while watching the Virgina Mich. St. NCAA tourny game. Good Simcoe flavor plowing through this great beer.
3.2Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured a dark orange-caramel color with a lots of little floaters and a medium sized foamy-creamy orange-white head. The aroma was sour and tangy pine and vague fruity hops. The flavor was bitter and tangy pine, grapefruit, lemon, caramel and a bit of cracker. Medium length finish. Moderately full bodied. Ok.
