Stegmaier Porter

Stegmaier Porter

The great porters of England were the inspiration for this traditional Pennsylvania-style dark beer. Four different malts contribute to its unique roasted aroma, flavor and subtle sweetness. Velvety-smooth on the tongue, you will pick up hints of coffee, caramel and chocolate in the taste.

3.4 Pours dark black, slightly oily with a small tan head. Nice roasted aroma, malts, chocolate and a little coffee. Mocha flavor, very pleasantly surprised by this one, only $6 for a six pack.
2.0 Weak aroma of dark toasted malts with vanilla hints. Black, thin tan head..Thin mouthfeel, Sour charcoal flavor. Thin mouthfeel. More of a schwarzbier than anything else. I always try to rate without looking at how others have rated it. I was amazed to find so many people have rated this so high. Although there didn’t seem to be anything off about my sample, I had trouble finishing it.
3.8 Bottle. Haven’t had this in some time but i’m sure this will be above the grain. Pours a black body with a tan head. Chocolate malt, mineral notes, roasted malt, some darker but dry velvet like fruit. Session able stout.
3.7 Bottle. I have to admit, I had low expectations ... but this started off with a very nice pour ... dark, deep, with a cascading, if quick, foamy top. It settled into a more mere mortal-looking dark beer, but it was a nice start. The aroma was an equally pleasant surprise, rich with warm roasty character. The initial sip had a hint of the sweetness I had jadedly expected, but it may have been subconscious, because by the second quaff, this settled into an actually quite-nice chocolatey brew. Well done. (#3632, 8/7/2009)
3.0 I had this a week ago according to my notes but I do not remember it in the slightest. Not even a vague hint of recognition. Interesting. Notes: coal and chalk aroma, very uncomplex. Bokchoy. Flavor is carbonic, dull, some coal, not much going on at all.
3.8 Bottle. Pours near-black with a medium brown head. Aroma is of mild coffee and dark chocolate. Flavor is dark chocolate with a coffee aftertaste. Rich and creamy. Good beer.
3.1 Tap at Barcade: Dark pour, deep brown, topped by a tan film of head. Aroma displays some butterscotch (diacetyl) along with some caramel sweetness and roast giving off a mocha note and underlying plum. Fizzy body- too much carbonation for the style. Thin flavor and jagged edges. A bit buttery. The roasted barley gives off a coffeeish note and there’s a caramelized character as well. Eh, a bit buttery.
3.3 Bottle. Deep brown body. Short, diminishing tan head. The aroma is somewhat mild with notes of roasted malts and caramel. Hints of chocolate, coffee and vanilla. The flavor is moderately sweet and ightly bitter, but finishes moderately bitter and lightly sweet. Moderate acidity also in the finish along with some metallic notes and slight cardboard, oxidation flavor. Medium body with a thin, watery texture and lively carbonation. Mocha java aftertaste was nice but an off-tastet took the beer down several notches.
3.7 This is a decent porter. Coffee, smoke, and chocolate all at once. Head doesn’t last very long, but overall a solid offering.
4.0 bottle just the least amount of light came thru.Rich Coffee hits your nose first and then smoky chocolate. Flavours of coffee, chocolate and butterscotch and an enjoyable malty finish, a little thin otherwise an excellent choice.
3.4 12 oz. bottle from Tmoney99. Pours a dark brown color with a small creamy tan head. the aroma is roasted malt and coffee with a touch of chocolate. The flavor is also roasted malts and light coffee with a touch of dark fruitiness. This is a little watery which takes away from my overall enjoyment.
3.5 Pours a dark brown color with a tan head. Aroma is of roasted malts, chocolate, dark fruits, and light coffee. Flavor starts off with the roasted malts, chocolate, and coffee. Finishes slight bitter. Overall not too bad.
3.7 Bottle pour.Subdued aroma, sweet and roasted.Good dark brown color with a good browinsh white head.Taste was similar to the aroma, molasses ,coffee hints.Drinks very easily.I am really starting to love porters more and more and this one is very good.definitely going to buy this again.
3.6 Bottle from Party Source. Poured a dark brown color with an average frothy brown head that mostly lasted with good lacing. Moderate roasted coffee, chocolate malty aroma. Medium body with a smooth texture with flat carbonation. Moderate roasted balanced flavor with a medium roasted bittersweet finish of moderate duration. I would recommend this to a freind.
3.5 This was a bit of a find in my opinion. My local shop just got them in and at $5.99 per six-pack, my expectations weren’t high. However, when I poured the brew, it was thick and dark and had a good dark brown head. THe aroma consisted of maple syrup, toasted nuts, and some silky mocha scents. The aroma was very similar and the palate was impressively moderate versus the thin cheap porters that usually go for the same price.
3.8 Is there anything better than a delicious and flavorful beer, in a good style, CHEAP, from your hometown? NO. Rating over.
3.3 January 2009 Beer of the Month Club Appearance: Pours a dark brown/black color Flavor: A taste best described as roasted. Overall Impression: It’s a solid Porter.
3.1 Pours black with a fully receding tan head. Tastes of mild roast, caramel malt, chocolate. Medium bodied with soft carbonation. Not particularly impressive. Ar6 Ap4 Ta6 Pa3 Ov12 Pours near black with ruby hues and a fully receding tan head. Notes of black malt, pepper, raisin, and caramel. Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Ar6 Ap4 Ta6 Pa3 Ov12
2.6 This beer was okay. Tried it at a beerfest and it was okay. Not the best porter but certainly not the worst at this event. Best offering from Loin brewery, hands down.
2.5 It was black, opaquewith a creamy, tan head. It came across as sharp, too edgy. One of these quickly ended a session
3.6 Bottle, thanks to Mei. Dark brown / black pour with just some film around the top. Aroma is sweet cocoa powder, light roast, light molasses / licorice. Flavor is the same, sweet chocolate and molasses, light roast finish. Pretty good compared to what I expected.
3.0 12 oz. bottle. Pours just about black with a thin-moderate brown head that disappeared after the first two sips and left no lace. Very mild aroma of lightly roasted malt. The flavor is mild, but a bit more defined than the aroma with roasted malt and some very light chocolate also present. The mouthfeel is a bit chalky, especially early in the glass. An ok beer.
3.5 (Draught) Pours a black body with a small tan head. Aroma of roastiness, light sour fruit, chocolate, and caramel. Flavor of roasted malt, caramel, chocolate, and subtle sourness. The slight sourness just seems to work with this porter.
4.8 A truly spectacular porter...only thing keeping it from perfect is a quick loss of head.
3.5 Very nice, somewhat local brew. This aroma is nice with coffee and chocolate. It’s appearance is nice with the classic porter look. It’s flavor is chocolate and coffee, somewhat sweet. Feel is a little dry, but not pungent, it’s good stuff.
3.0 A great drinker. darker brown, ruby. quite fruity, malty, some dark fruit. not overly sweet, enjoyed it! Thanks to Lou18 for the brew!
3.0 Name: Porter Date: 04/12/1997 Mode: Bottle Source: Taco Mac, Sandy Springs very dark with ruby red highlights, thin tan head, sweet carmel malt aroma, rich candy sweet malt flavor, more like a scotch than a porter -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Name: Porter Date: 11/05/2004 after a few years the sweetness turns a bit winey, otherwise gets flat -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Name: Porter Date: 04/21/2007 Mode: bottle Source: tasting Score: 3.1 to 3.0 lots of roasted and bitterness causing it to be very dry, light tartness, Aroma: 6/10; Appearance: 7/10; Flavor: 6/10; Palate: 6/10; Overall: 11/20 Rating: 3/5.0 Drinkability: 7/10 Score: **/4
3.2 English style indeed! Dark brown, flavors of coffee, chociolate and a bitter finish. The few bottles I sampled poured flat, but that’s my only complaint. Lion Brewery’s Stegmaier Porter is not easy to find, but worth seeking out.
3.1 12 oz bottle via Mys Swap 2.0(thanks Lou18!).Pours a near black with a small tan head. Nose is yeasty with lots of fruity esters.Taste is nutty, strawberry, raisons, plum, chocolate. Also seems a bit oxidized.I think this should be in the Baltic Porter category. Body is light, carbonation medium. This is an ok porter, but nothing special.
3.3 Bottled. A pitch black beer with a brown head. The aroma is sweet with notes of over ripe fruits, chocolate, and roasted malt. The flavor is sweet malty with notes of roasted malt, and a slight touch of soy sauce, leading to a dry bitter finish. The mouthfeel is oily. Thanks Papsoe for sharing.
