3.0 Initially a sweet cola aroma. Brown colour with off white head. Prunes and seven up flavour, a bit watery finish, seltzery. Not bad, but not a great dubbel, either.
2.5 Muddy brown with a cream head. Sweet, brown sugar, vegetal, and caramel. Thin palate, caramel, sweet, and malty.
3.1 bottle, poured a brown color with minimal head. Aroma of brown sugar, caramel, raisin. Medium sweetness. Medium bodied, slick texture, soft carbonation. Has a flatter taste with matly, sryup backbone. Its been while, but I remember this being better before.
3.0 This one fell a tad short for me. It did have a big yeast flavor. Notes of caramel malt and prune. It was just ok.
2.9 Bottle poured a clear reddish brown with as lasting tan head. Aromas of cola, toffee and light spice. Palate was light bodied and crisp. Flavors of cola, toffee and light spice with a crisp lingering cola finish.
3.6 Dark brown pour with a long lasting beige head. Plum and raisan aroma. Spritzy feel on the palate and somewhat dry. Smooth clean finish. Better than most dubbels and at a decent price.
3.7 330mL bottle poured reddish brown into glass with off-white head and yeast sediment. Aromas of malt and spice and yeast. Flavors of malt and yeast with a little bitterness. Not as bad as some of the other ratings suggest.
2.7 Dark brown, head should hold a bit longer. Dark fruits, malts getting trough, a bit spicey. Sweetened, very light sourness and biterness. Can’t say it makes me happy, but had worse for sure. Something weird, less pleasant, at the smell, a bit of a yeasty, fruity aftertaste.
3.0 Bit fluffy light-greige head over clear red-brown beer, as watered-down cola. Rich cake aromas, fruity-estery nose, some dark malts. Watery fruit flavours; sweet, cheap sugarsyrup, brown candi sugar solution. Retronasal more fruity yeastesters. Watery, light body. Bit fizzy, even, despite little visual carbonation. The nose was promising. From there, it went downhill. I have some reservations as to the Du Bocq provenance. Scheldebrouwerij, anyone?
3.1 33cl, no mention of ABV, exclusive brew, from De Hopduvel Gent, not complex brew, malty and slightly roasted, yet balanced, hazy, small head, nice brew
3.5 Fruity, rich, solid dubbel. I liked it better than their witbier. It was incredibly cheap as well.
2.3 Bottle. Nose is some dried fruit with a faint ’off’ smell to it. Pours dark red-brown with HUGE yeast floaters in it; I wasn’t sure if it was even good for a moment. The floaters were really unattractive. Tastes mild and a little boring; dry and yeasty, without the complexity I want from a Dubbel. Not again.
2.9 14th March 2008 Smooth light deeet Dubbel. Nice soft finish with a light touch of bitterness. Nice but somewhat one dimensional.
3.6 Dark brown pour from bottle with a thin head. Aroma is plums and raisins. Taste is dark fruit, sugar and yeast. Smooth finish. Don’t understand the low ratings for this at all. This is a solid beer.
2.8 Bottle pours a orange/red brew with a large white head. Fruits and spices scent. Taste is light and sweet. Thin.
3.0 Pours amber-brown with a decent light brown head. Nose is brown sugar. Flavor is fairly weak for a dubbel and is mostly brown sugar, caramel, and a hint of hops. Finish is short for an abbey. Not awful but not great either.
2.7 Appearance: dark brown, light brown head; TONS of yeast sediment. Aroma: dark fruits (raisins, cherries), prune juice, caramel and toasty malts. Taste: a little sweet caramel, brown sugar, toasted brown oat bread. Finish: yeasty, with a hint of dry clovey bitterness balancing the sweet. Notes: Decent enough dubbel; certainly better than the ratings would indicate, although the giant yeasty bits were a little off-putting. The taste wasn’t quite as sweet as the aroma indicates, but that’s not a bad thing.
2.8 Kind of dry and overly carbonated with floating yeast. I dont think Ill every buy one of these again.
3.7 bottle - Pours amber with big, chunky yeast flakes and an off-white head. It’s a bubbly brew with an aroma of yeast, malt, and dark fruit. The malts with dark fruit tones come through pretty well in the flavor. Medium bodied with a lively palate, this brew was quite enjoyable and I’m surprised at the low ratings.
3.9 Nice toasty malt aroma, almost like toasted multi-grain bread. Dark brown in color with a whole hell of a lot of yeast particles floating in the brew. Almost a fruity sweet malt flavor followed by some medicinal hops bitterness in the aftertaste. Overall, a very good brew. The only negative is the huge yeast particles floating around. It makes is look unappetizing IMO.
3.1 Bottle. Pours very reddish brown with a big pillowy beige head that quickly recedes. And -- holy shit -- lots of large chunks and flakes floating around. Surprisingly clear for all that sediment. Aroma is mildly malty, caramel, some fruit (cherry? apricot?), a little sweet and metallic. Flavor is malty sweet, caramel, sort of earthy, but not really sour or funky. I’m not picking up too many elements of a typical dubbel (banana, clove, coriander, candy sugar) or even a Belgian for that matter, but it’s tasty and drinkable in a generic sort of way. Medium mouthfeel. Improves in both aroma and taste as it warms -- gets more complex and fruity. In the end, I can’t tell if I’m intrigued or freaked out by all the crap floating around in my glass.
3.0 Bottle 50cl swing top: Poured a deep brown with an off white to tan head. Aroma was sweet malt and fruit. Taste was sweet caramel/maple malt not as dark fruit as the aroma had led me to believe.
2.9 Pours brown with debris noticable. Aroma is of malt. Tastes unlike it looks, it is not heavy and notes of bananas and spice are present. Nice ABV content.
2.8 Pours from the bottle to a brown color with little head or lacing. Nose was malty fruit, but mouthfeel was very thin and watery, which carried over into, and overwhelmed the taste. Finsih was short and metallic and left a lot to be desired. Not a good dubbel.
3.1 Not a bad dubbel, with flavors of maple. A little on the thin side. Not as fizzy as I usually like. Flavors became duller as the glass emptied.
3.4 Minimal aroma of nothing much really. Looks dark brown with some lacing and average head retention. Tasted like sweet honey, brown sugar, and watered down alcohol. At the end of the day, this isn’t the best abbey dubbel I’ve ever had, but I don’t think it’s as average as everyone else. It’s alright for the price. Cheers!
3.5 The only main problem with this is that it’s just not very substantial. The aroma is a very pleasing fruity-type, and it presents a wonderful Belgian dark maroonish-brown with a fluffy head. But flavor-wise it ends not not too distinctive (even if tasty) and the body is hardly existent. On the lower end for the style, which still rates well for a beer.
2.9 Bottle. Pours a brune body with a tan head. Malty body caramel some chewy fruit notes, and a mild rye bitterness. Full bodied with a sweet finish. Eh.
2.5 A dark brown beer with sediment & no head. Aroma was fruity. Taste was fruity, thin, & a watery aftertaste. Not a whole lot going on here.
3.3 Got a bottle from my brother. Not bad aroma and flavors, typical profile with super high carbonation.
