Stillwater Brontide

Stillwater Brontide

A smooth black ale with mild roast and a soft Trappist yeast character.

[ I unverified this beer because "black ale" and "trappist yeast" seem to be a stretch for a Schwarzbier; maybe Brown Ale is more appropriate. For your consideration. Alex ] [Agreed, schwarzbier makes no sense here- Josh]

3.5 From 12oz can, poured into 16oz tulip glass Aroma: roasty, toast, caramel, sweet Appearance: black, clear, tan foam, Taste: light sweetness, lightly bitter, Palate: medium body, creamy, average carbonation, bitter finish Overall: Not a bad schwarzbier. A bit roasted malts. Very smooth. Highly drinkable.
3.3 Can. Pours a virtual black with a foamy tan head and bits of lacing. Aroma of Roasted malt, almost burnt and hint of sweetness in the background. Taste of roasted malt and dark chocolate. Mild bitterness and a dry finish. Fairly light body, smooth with a strong roasted malt character. Nice beer but a bit heavy on the roasted (burnt) malt.
3.2 From Craftissimo. Drank with Matt before Grana opening. Opaque ruby-black with thin light tan fizzy head. Minimal lacing. Smells of acidic/burnt malt, herbal lightly floral hop (grass jelly). Tastes of moderate burnt/roast malt, moderate grass jelly bitterness, quite thin otherwise. Body is watery, herbal more acidic finish. Combination of watery palate + burnt/acidic taste makes me think of bad cheap stouts. Acidity is more burnt than sour, though, and aroma is not bad. Interesting idea for a beer but probably wouldn't get again.
3.2 Can from new Craftissimo at home. Dark dark brown/light black pour with foamy bubbly light tan head. Aroma is roasted almost burnt malt. Taste is a bit tart - burnt coffee - and roasted. Light. Could use a bit more bitterness maybe. Not bad.
3.5 Sampled June 2014 A steady pour from the can into my teku glass produces a three-finger thick, brown tinged, dark tan colored head. The beer is a dark chocolate color. The aroma has a charred, not quite smoky, blackened, burnt malt character to it up front and this is backed by a bit of fruit (plum and raisin) and a hint of spice. The dark malt character gets a bit more rounded in the second take of the nose with a wholesome, browned, toasted whole grain character, as well as a toasted / roasted hay like character. The beer is fairly light bodied and has a creamy, lingering texture to it in the finish, while up front it has a carbonic bite and then a prickly effervescence as it rolls across the tongue. The roasted character is the dominant character here, but is smoother than it seems in the nose. Smooth whole grain toast, dark chocolate leaning browned bread, richly roasted coffee, and a roasted nutty note. There is a fermented fruit character here that leans towards dark plums, with perhaps a touch of raisins. Not bad, and quite easy drinking, it is like a more roasted version of New Belgium’s 1554, but I think I might like it a bit more.
3.7 Can. Aroma is Schwarz like, light spice, soy sauce, bit fruity. Taste is nice enough, roasty, little bit of sweetness, some treacle there too. Feels smooth but also quite dry. Cola. Nice enough, but not quite sure about it.
2.5 boozy bar aroma with some alcohol and maybe some detergent at the end to clean things up heh heh. some fruit and metal to this beer of moderate body. can up on 11/14. a tang that grows on you and maybe shouldnt.
3.2 Can. Very dark pour, large coarse foamy cola head. Nose has some chocolate power and some bready yeast; the flavor is roasty, a bit ashen, yeast-forward, like rising dough, maybe a tiny bit smoky. I bought this one basically because I’m interested in most things that Stillwater tries, and it’s not terrible but nor is this a style I’m particularly drawn to.
2.1 Light roasty aroma, tinny from can I assume. Pours light black with reddish tint and small wispy tan head. Light roasty flavor, bready, not much else. Light bodied, high CO2, light roasty finish. Pretty bland. Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
3.5 Where and how: can at Volo Aromanice with dark coffee roast wrapped with solid dose of hops. Appearance : Top: smaller white cap. Base: black, opaque. Palate : medium, smooth with lighter carbonation. Average plus finish. Drinkable. Taste: complex approach/ Floral hops paired with chocolate malts, roasted coffee beans. All refined with mild easy going vibe. other notes this is not Schwarz beer more of hybrid of neat session black ipa with stout.
4.1 Poured from a 12 OZ can into a pint glass. This is a dark brown beer with a tan medium sized head. The flavor is malt and cocoa. Overall, this is pretty good and I would recommend this beer to fans of dark ales and stouts.
3.2 Draft. Brown beer with a light tan head. light roast aroma. Roast and light nutty flavor with light chocolate. Medium bodied. Roast and light malt linger with light cocoa.
2.8 Draught in a burger bar in SF. Deep brown with a medium head. Aroma is roasted malt and fruit. Flavour is roasted malt, coffee, fruity finish
3.7 Beautiful, even-toned red/black, with an inch of light brown head. Aroma is sweet and lightly grapey, with additional fig notes. Taste is much more dry than expected, and clean, with roasty malt, and dark fruit notes. $3/12oz
3.0 Can - Dark malts, light toast and a touch of cocoa. Deep jet black with a decent light brown head. Toasted malts, touch of light molasses and a bit too much carbonation which hardens the edges a bit. The carbonation may have killed this a bit.
3.4 June 12, 2015 - on tap at Bricks. Dark pour with limited head. Aroma was roasted malt and light yeast and spice. Taste was consistent with aroma.
3.7 12oz can at Brasserie V. Brown-black body with a foamy beige head. Kind of odd herbal meets chocolate aroma. A pretty solid dark saison. Cocoa touches. Not unlike a Porter in a lot of respects. Doughy malts, with a pleasant Saison twangy undercurrent. Easy drinking, quality brew.
3.4 Dark brown pour. Roasty and slightly herbal nose. Roast coffee, coffee, some spices. Creamy and medium bodied. Liked it
3.4 355ml can. Pours very dark cola brown, almost black, with two fingers of creamy light beige head. Aroma is roasted malts, some caramel, light coffee, light yeast. Taste is similar, nice roastiness, light hoppy finish. Light to medium body, a bit too watery, medium carbonation. Not bad.
3.3 Black pour with slight tan head and very little retention. Aroma is roasty, herbal and dark chocolate. Tastes are along the same lines with coffee and spice. Texture is slick and a little under-carbonated for me. Interesting though.
3.6 Can pour opaque black with moderate tan head. Nose red fruits, cherry, light roasted malt, and slight powdery. Taste lighter fruit up front, light roast and cocoa. Mild Belgian fruit character.
3.1 The beer pours a very dark brown color with a medium tan head that fades quickly. The aroma is pure roasted malts and chocolate malts, and the taste is mildly umami and a touch bitter with a roasty aftertaste. The palate fuses a thin texture, average carbonation, and a medium-light body.
3.2 Draft. Pours black. Aroma and taste are roasted malts and some coffee. A bit thin.
3.5 Smooth mouthfeel. Good shwartz. Sweetish side and a good summer drinker. Wvrst.
2.8 Quite fruity and light for a dark ale. Pours very dark with a silky head but the fruit dominates with little follow theough
3.4 Can. Opaque dark brown beer with a large beige head. Aroma is malty with notes of caramel, coffee, tea, herbs and licorice. Flavor is malty with notes of caramel, bread, coffee, licorice and grass. Well balanced.
3.4 on tap scura buona schiuma piuttosto persistente buone note tostate un lieve metallico morbida bilanciata
4.0 Can at WVRST. Very dark with off white head. Coffee and bitter chocolate aroma. Smooth mouth feel. Flavours of coffee and dark chocolate. Nice.
3.4 Can. Pours brownish black with a small tan head. Aroma of roasted malts, chocolate and fruit. Flavor was slightly dry and smooth with chocolate, dark fruit, caramel and coffee.
3.6 Dark saison with a good yeasty eatery kick. Enjoyable but prudent and a little bit heavy.
