Stillwater Folklore

Human history is filled with myths and legends that shape and define our culture. Rituals, celebrations, gatherings.. whatever. One thing that’s for sure, is we enjoy a proper shindig. So let’s get the stories flowing and share a little ’Folklore’. A bracingly deep ale, built dark and rich with an elegantly lean body, accompanied by heady aromas of Belgian yeast, earthy hops and gently kissed by a wisp of smoke.

3.7 Draught@CBC2015. Black colour, small beige head. Aroma is floral, some liquorice, mild alcohol and some toffee. Flavour is fruity, liquorice, toffee and mild lactic notes as well as some mild toast.
3.6 Bottle from J’s. Pours a deep brown to black with a little bit of foam. Bottle aged for one year. Dark chocolate aroma some treacle notes. Chicory, soy sauce, cardamom on the palate. Roasted coffee. Surprisingly enough, still has a nice hoppy bite on the finish. Expectations exceeded after a trying a year old bottle. Holds up fairly well.
3.8 Poured from bottle...deep black pour with creamy head...light lacing...nose is malt licorice and berries...mouth is smooth and dry...solid brew.
3.7 Bottle 35,5cl @ LaBIRRAtorium, Madrid, Spain. A: Black. T: Roasted malt, sweet, chocolate, licorice.
3.3 Draft sample at Oedipus International Beer Festival 2016. Amsterdam, The Netherlands. 03.07.2016. Pour it dark color with small black head. Aroma dark chocolate, some roasted malt. Taste sweet licorice, vanilla, spice, dark chocolate, maybe not my cup of tea, light to medium body, oily feel, soft carbonation.
3.9 12oz bottle. Nose inky with scored and faint soy notes, well not soy, more like MSG, with heavy chocolate and some tar, grain; relatively low on the fruit. More cocoa powder with volume. Pour is very dark brown with a medium-brown head that wobbles. Taste is medium-strong sweet over light-medium bitterness, crisp with hot cocoa powder and dark chocolate, light red berry in the back a very nice accent, earth and faint hops, some high-level alcohol to impress rather than offend. Touch of class with good complexity. Just a touch of meaty smoke, and the airy texture doesn’t get out of control. Inky-thick, smooth, dense body near syrup, satisfies. Not my thing for every day, but a great weekender for contemplation. [2016.08.18: 3.9] With volume more glassine crystal malt in the mouth and a ton more plum. Fruit accumulates, I guess. Great beer.
3.4 On tap at Gollem’s Proeflokaal. Black colour, beige head. Aroma of dark fruits, roasted malts, liquorice, hint of smoke, hint of leather, quite malty. Flavour is sweet, malty, liquorice, salmiak, dark fruits, some roasted malts, bittersweet finish. Medium bodied. Belgian yeast character is quite prominent. Would really categorize this as a BSA (with a little extra roast).
3.9 Bottle from cervezalandia. Dark color. Thin medium brown head. Taste is medium bitter, light sweetness. Aroma is chocolate, roasted, fruity, malt, spices.
3.6 Sampled on tap at the Oedipus International Beer Festival 2016, Amsterdam - day#1 (02-Jul-2016). Clear, reddish black colour with a beige head. Aroma of sweet chocolate malt and coffee. Full body and soft carbonation. Flavour of roasted chocolate malt, coffee, Belgian yeast, spices and herbs. Slightly smoked. Nice and smooth.
3.8 Sampled from tap at the Oedipus International Beer Festival 2016. Clear, deep red to black with a beige head. Sweetish, moderately roasty-malty aroma of chocolate, sweet coffee and some licorice. Sweet, slightly roasty-malty taste of caramel, chocolate, sweet coffee and some licorice, followed by a medium long, slightly roasty-bitter, a little yeasty finish. Medium to full body, creamy mouthfeel, average carbonation. Nice!
3.5 Black in color with a short lived tan head. Aroma is roasty and slightly sweet. Flavor follows with earthy notes as well and slight smoke. Sorta awkward for me overall. Wouldn’t purchase again.
3.4 0,33l fles gedeeld met lion. Zwart met een bescheiden kraag redelijk geroosterd met koffie en cacao en zwarte bessen veel CO2
3.9 Tap pour at Of Love and Regret on Baltimore. Deep black in color with tan head. Roasty malt notes with a slight smoke. Taste actually has a bit of dark fruit Belgian to it complementing the traditional smoke and roasted nut notes of a stout. Thin body with an almost black IPA finish. Aftertaste has elements of smoke that linger. Very tasty effort from a brewery that likes to take chances. I think with a slightly toned down smoke quality I’ll be even more impressed. In general, I’ll spin the yarn of this one for at least the rest of the evening.
3.5 Pours dark Carmel with brown lacing. Good carbonation with coffee roasted fruit and a smooth finish. Very nice and easy to drink.
3.8 Candy roasted malt, hints of smoke; near black color, tan colorored; sweet, smoky, roasted and caramelized corn, dry finish; medium body, smooth; really, really good.
3.2 Draft. Dark brown color. Overly subdued hop flavor. Not much going on with this brew except for the relatively high ABV. Medium bitter finish.
3.6 Pours near black, tan head, good lacing. Aroma is chocolate, plums, roasted malt. Taste is the same, some rum, molasses, bitter coffee. Smooth mouthfeel, relatively bitter for the style. Very nice, but doesn’t quite come together.
2.4 Tap @ Omnipollos Hatt. Black with a creamy beige head, leaving good lacing. Alot of dark chocolate in the aroma with booze and some roasted notes and ash. Silky mouthfeel, mild carbonated. Rich alcohol taste, dark chocolate praline, molasses, sugar and dark dried fruit. The nice yeast and rosted notes is held back by the raw booze.
3.6 Dark brown pour with two fingers of foam. Roasty with a little smoke and fruit. Nice balance and complexity.
3.4 With Z , a bomber, pours a rich pitch black pour with a Java head. Nose is heavy thick malt, dark black licorice and smoke .Taste is a complex of hops and malt , smoke and black licorice . Finishes on the same tasting notes, with a yeasty malty finish . Quaff Score 7 / 10
3.2 Bomber. Pours. Lack with a brown head and aroma of roasted malt. Taste is of roasted malt, with caramel, bread, and biscuit notes with slight dark fruits into the finish.
3.5 Heavy fruity roasted malt aroma. Black as night body with a light tan thin head. Sweet dark fruity malt aroma. With a hint of roasted malts. Has a bold character but has a friendly finish. Strong enough to warm the palate on a chilly evening.
3.8 From tap at Copenhagen Beer Celebration 2014. Dark brown almost black color with beige brown head. Roasted malty aroma, chocolate, coffee, licorice, caramel, dark dried fruits, some yeasty notes. Sweet and bitter taste. Medium oily body with soft carbonation.
3.5 Aroma is roasted malt, nutty, a touch of smoke, maybe milk chocolate. Appearance is black, light brown head, but poured thin. Taste is dark fruit, roasted malt, lots of smoke, maybe lactose, decent. Mouthfeel is light, carbonation is pretty harsh, roasted malt aftertaste. Overall, meh.

3.0 Tap @ All in beer fest 7/11-15. Dried fruity and notes of leather(?). Body is medium, dry finish.
3.5 On tap at 40 Brews. It poured a dark color with a tan head. The aroma was of roasted chocolate, prunes and some malts. The taste was of roasted chocolate, orange peel, coffee and some smoke. Good stuff.
