Stillwater / Mikkeller Two Gypsies Our Side

Mikkel and Brian are two of the world’s most unconventional brewers. By designing beers at various breweries around the globe, they have found the freedom to experiment and innovate, resulting in unique beers that often blur the lines of definition. After having met at a festival in Bodegraven, NL the two realized that their first creations both were called Stateside. It was then an obvious decision to make the two recipes into a new product, packed full of piney, resinous hops, and backed by the esters of a farmhouse yeast strain.

2.9 Good, not great. I was expecting more. Flavor was pretty nondescript. Some malt character, some bitterness. Perhaps this one was better fresh. Oh well.
3.5 750ml bottle. Pours a slightly hazed medium amber color with an inch of coarse off-white head. Aroma is sweet and mildly fruity with hints of spice from the yeast. Taste has bitter citrus peel hops that hit first, followed by a mild sweetness with hints of banana and spice. The finish is bitter. Medium body with a nice amount of carbonation
3.7 8/31/2011: Mikkeller Stillwater Two Gypsies Our Side... Aroma: Alcohol steeped grapefruit and orange peel; yeasty, hint of yeasty dough; very fruity with a hint of fresh apricot and pineapple. Appearance: Opaque gold color with a foamy, dull beige head. Flavor: Fruity and spicy; lots of citrusy hoppiness (for the style); I like the moderate grapefruit peel/pithe bite in the finish. Palate: Medium to medium-full body; soft and fuzzy feel; good level of carbonation. Overall: Nice beer and quite tasty. 1 pt 9.4 fl. oz. bottle (Alc. 7.5% by Vol.) shared by Tmoney99. Thanks Tom! Rating #359 for this beer.
3.7 Bottle. Pours a hazy orange golden color with a small white head. The aroma is floral, tropical, and citrus fruits, grass, bread dough, herbal with a hint of pepper. The flavor has an interesting blend of hop fruit character, citrus and tropical, with a dry feel. Toasted malts, yeast, some earthy bitterness through the finish and a bit of peppery spice. Quite a bit going on.
3.4 Pours a hazy golden copper color with a fizzy white head. Aroma of grass, citrus, and yeast. Citrus flavor with hint of grass, and spice. A bit of alcohol on the back end. Dry finish. Nice beer!
2.9 Bottle. Pours a hazy straw color with a huge head of foam. Aromas are kinda lemony but faint... maybe a little grassy edge to them. Flavor is not great... the beer has a lemon and grass herbal presence with a hot alcohol feel to it. This one is a fail in my book.
4.0 Almost clear golden. Effervescent with large bubbly white head. Aroma is dry, yeasty, light citrus, lemon. Flavor follows. Medium body. Lightly fruity sweet followed by Spicy and dry. moderate grassy bitterness with long duration. Soft and bubbly. I like this...but not really a Belgian strong ale.. Overall, excellent.
3.4 yeast, citrus aroma. a little dry taste. spices, yeast, a little earthy maybe, something that’s hard to pick out. very interesting, light, crisp, definitely worth your while.
2.9 Bottle from Brusin Ales, aged 2+ years - aroma is piney with a wheaty and malty finish. Some bitterness and weight. Meh, probably shouldn’t have aged it so long DiarmaidBHK!
3.0 Bottle from Brusin ales. Pours golden with a half inch of white foam. A bit of bread on the nose. A little tart and dry on the tongue. Finishes clean. Eh!
4.0 Bottle danish pours. Pours a hazy gold with a slight white head and loose lacing. Aroma of spicy yeast, piney hops, a bit of orange zest. Taste is spicy, bready, piney, citrus, crisp and dry. Nice bretty notes all around.
3.9 September 2011. Bottle. Aromas of yeast, citrus, hay and vanilla. Cloudy yellow with a foamy white head. Banana, bread and lemon flavors. Awesome beer.
3.7 750ml bottle. Fresh, floral aroma, tropical, lightly citric and sweet, with notes of pineapple, orange, honey, lemon, powdered sugar, grassy tones, and some faintly doughy yeast. Cloudy medium golden in color, head is frothy and lasting, also some impressive lacing here. Flavor profile is fruity, lightly hoppy and gently sweet, with good interplay between the lightly sugary, honeyish, toasty malts, fresh, fruity hop character, tropical fruitiness and yeast spice, a decent bit of earthy bitterness showing up at the finish along with suggestions of melon and pear. Plenty of effervescence to be found, palate is semi-dry, body is medium. Refreshing, flavorful and enjoyable.
3.9 Intentful carbonation producing a pillowy but consistent grey/white head and dark yellow body. Upfront Yankee hop action, with a dusty yeast backdrop. Firm Belgian sweetness, gritty but smooth mouthfeel allows for a suppable strawy malt thread. Peppery linger drys things out as much as the carbonation, but with a continued syrupy sweetness. Better than I remember off Keg that one time in Brewdog, I think. Bottle, Marksman Tasting, Edinburgh
3.5 Bottle. Aroma of citrus, yeast, caramel, piney hops and some resin. Taste is mild and sweet with clear yeast notes, some oranges and caramel. Finish is sourish with malt residue.
4.1 Bright fruity flavors, sweetness, bold hoppiness, but all in wonderful balance. Great beer.
(Rating #4601)
4.2 Draft at Monk’s Kettle in San Fransisco. Pours cloudy orange with foamy white head. Aroma and taste is of fruits and spice and yeast. Incredibly balanced and complex. Really lovely.
4.0 Bottle. Pours hazy amber with thick, frothy off-white head; good retention and some lacing. Aroma is pineapple, orange peel, lavender, bread and cookie malts, citrus hops, spice, and yeast. Flavor is dry malts, citrus and pine hops (light bitterness), grapefruit, pineapple, and light spice; dry finish with some subtle bitterness. Medium body and carbonation.
3.8 750 mL bottle from Sun Devil Liquors in Phoenix AZ, served in a snifter. Pours hazy golden-amber with intense carbonation and an enormous, fluffy off-white head that remains and laces well. The nose has intense notes of pine and resin, along with grainy, caramelly malts and Belgian spice. The flavour is dry and slightly sweet throughout with caramel malts and grainy notes. It is balanced with a large amount of bitter, piney, citrusy hops, pepper and spice, coriander and farmhouse notes. The finish is long, moderately bitter and spicy, a continuation of the aroma and flavour. On the palate, it is medium in body with a smooth, milky texture and intense carbonation. Overall, this is a great brew, a blend of American hops and Belgian yeast notes. Saison meets IPA with a Belgian twist. 2012-03-15
3.8 Sampled at an esbls tasting. Golden and haxy. A white layer. I smell a farmhouse or saison. Sweet fruit and yeast with pale malts. The flavor is the same with something like camomile. Sour and tart hops come later. This is a saison but with some nice twists.
4.2 A - Pours a hazy golden-orange color with a finger of frothy slightly off-white head. The head fades down at a very slow pace leaving behind some nice lacing. S - Aroma is a mix of grapefruit, citrus, and floral hops with some sweet grainy and bready malts, and some Belgian yeast, spices, and lemon zest. T - Starts off with with grapefruit, orange, and citrus hops with some bitterness and some sweet grainy malts, lemon zest, and coriander. Through the middle, some pine and floral hops come through with a bit more bitterness and Belgian yeast with some spices and some mild funk. The finish is a mix of pine and grassy hops with some bitterness, Belgian yeast, some tart lemon peel, a bit of funk, and some spices. M - Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Feels smooth with a dry, tart, and estery finish. D - Very drinkable. Great overall balance with good hop character and yeast character.
4.3 Bottle from 16 Tons, Eugene. Pours a brilliant hazy orange color, lots of head. Aroma is powerful, farmhouse yeast, citrus, resin. Medium body with bright mouthfeel. Finish is long and akin to the "earthiness" common in saisons and despite the strong presence of hops in the nose, the finish is exquisitely well-balanced and smooth. I’m not sure what this beer is technically in terms of style, but it is really delicious.
4.0 Pours cloudy somewhere between yellow and orange. Monstrous white head with lots of carbonation feeding it.Smells wonderful. Some citrus/orange/peach sweet notes supporting heavy yeast aroma. Delicious belgian strong ale. The citrus definitely is pronounced but not overdone. A nice yeasty finish. Just enough hop bitterness to provide balance and definitely some alcohol warming at the end.Great beer, highly recommended.
3.4 750ml bottle poured into tulip. Pours a nice dark golden/amber with a huge, and I mean huge head. Aroma is of farmhouse yeast and hops which is, as the description on the bottle mentions, on the resinous side. Taste has an good amout of bitterness and is slightly acidic. Body is medium-full with some over average carbonation (this had me burping like crazy...!) Texture is slick, a really nice aspect of this beer. Aftertaste is pretty bitter and long-lasting. Overall a good brew. Aroma is nothing to write home about and in fact the brew as a whole didn?t impress me so much, but maybe it?s because it was a bit overhyped to me when I asked about it where I purchased it. Don?t get me wrong, it is good, but for me it falls into the "tried it, it was good, but won?t buy again" category. EDIT: After reading other?s rating on this one, I wonder if my bottle might have gotten old, as I bought it 6 months ago and it was stored at temperatures reaching 25C last summer...
3.7 Bottle @ home, courtesy of jcnielsen. Thanks Jetson! Pours a hazy golden appearance with a big fluffy, cream colored head. Musty, barnyard, light lemon, herbal aroma. A bit peppery, somewhat spicy, straw, light vanilla, straw flavor with a dry finish. Pretty nice Saison for a session ale.
3.5 My Bottom Line: Tropical fruitiness is grounded in floral honey and herbal hops in this prickly farmhouse brew. Further Personal Perceptions: -A sheet of foam covers the misty pale gold. -Mouthfeel could be fluffier for the style. -Malts contribute hay-like allusions. -Body is lean and carbonation quite bubbly, hard. -There is a lot going on in there, but I can’t say it gels completely for now. Bottle.
3.8 Bottle, shared by edvard june 2012. hazy orange body, big white lively head. Aroma of belgian yeast, citrus, pepper, grain. Taste is fruity with spicy yeast notes, caramel, slightly sour. very carbonated, which fits this beer nice. Hoppy grassy and dry finish with a sweetness coming through in the aftertaste. I enjoyed this beer.
