Stillwater Readymade - Vacuum

Stillwater Readymade - Vacuum

What is with the paradoxical term ’Black IPA’ anyway? Whatever it is, we do love black beers.. also smoked beers, and of course everyone loves hops these daze.. A complex blend various smoked, caramel and subdued roasted malts lay the base for a combination of piney, dank and (dark) fruity hops.. While there is a lot to contemplate with this beast, just be sure to enjoy it without getting too sucked into its enigmatic composition.

Label Design Notes: The layout of the label reinforces the absurdity by recalling both early promotional materials from Braun and Alfred Stieglitz’s photo of Marcel Duchamp’s "Fountain".

3.1 Bottle. Very dark brown with a pillowy beige top that just sits there and laces very heavily. Aroma of dark fruit, caramel, dank and smoke. Tastes bitter and charred. Medium bodied and smooth. Very drying with a long ashy finish. Too lopsided with ash.
3.3 Compensada, pero no me convence el sabor, no llega ni a Ipa ni a Stout, se queda un poquito corta
3.4 355ml bottle pours black in color with a finger of light brown head that leaves some spotted lacing on the glass. Aroma is roasted grains, chocolate, pine and dark fruits with some smoky notes. Taste is a roasted grain and pine hop bitterness with a dark fruity and malty sweetness finishing with some smoky notes. Medium bodied with good carbonation. Overall, a nicely done smoky brew that is also balanced well between the hops and malts. Recommended.
4.6 Aroma: Smoked chocolate notes and some coffee notes too. Appearance: Dark brown color with hazy liquid and a frothy tan head. Taste: Light sweet notes behind a heavy bitter touch. Palate: Full body with creamy texture and soft carbonation. Long bitter finish. Overall: Great beer. Leaves a great memory on the palate. Bitter smoked touches with chocolate memory every time.
4.2 Una Black ipa de libro, con un toque ahumado muy bien integrado, tanto en aroma como en sabor es una buena IPA con los toques Black que caracterizan a estas cervezas y el toque ahumado es una delicia.
3.7 Dark brown to black colored, medium tan creamy head, nice lacing and lasting. Aroma is of roasted malt and chocolate, some grapefruit, fruity and floral hops moderate aroma with some pellety quality. Taste is medium sweet malt, some caramel, dark chocolate, roasted malt, smokey, some acidity (roasty?), medium hoppy fruity and floral, medium+ bitterness, dry finish. Medium bodied, soft carbonation, oily. Overall nice and nice hoppiness, but there’s some acidity and slight astringency in the taste that brings it down... (bottle, Bierhalle Deconinck, Vichte)

3.8 On tap at Ma Che Siete Venuti A Fa, Rome. Pours dark brown with small tan head. Light to moderate smoke, malty, caramel, some wood, licorice, Moderate sweetness. Medium bodied.
3.2 Not a smoked beer, but a Black IPA with an underscore of smoke, here’s the rest. This was poured into a snifter. The appearance was a black color with a thin off white to almost tan foamy head that dissipated at a nice pace. Brimmed out/concave lacing clings adequately all along the sides of the glass. The aroma leads with a big charge of piney hops bold and up front. Slight resin, subtle bitter cocoa nibs. Barely noticeable smoke. The flavor is the piney/resinous bitter sticky hops up front. Dry piney aftertaste with the same sort of finish. On the palate, this one sat about a light to medium on the body. Good carbonation - feels good for the most part. Enough harshness acting onto the bitterness. Overall, it’s a black IPA not a smoked beer and I rated it as a black IPA, numbers shouldn’t be too long off due to misinformed person who added this to ratebeer.
3.5 How: Bottle. Where: SBWF 2016. Appearance: Brown colour with a tan head. Aroma: Liquorice, hops, smoked, roasted malt. Body: Medium body and carbonation. Flavour: Hops, smoked, roasted malt, some fruit, liquorice.
4.1 Bottle at home. Clear mahogany pour with a tall tan head with good retention. Very nice aroma of pine resin, dark chocolate, roasted malts, toffee, milk chocolate. The taste follows the same notes, nicely balanced between dank hop bitterness, roastiness, dark chocolate bitterness, saltiness and sweetness. The smoke is present, but, like the other components, nicely blended in. Medium body and carbonation and a roasty bitter-sweet and slightly salty finish.
3.6 On tap at What?s Brewing Beer Festival 2016, Stavanger. Pours black with dense beige head. Aroma of caramel, dark bread, some chocolate, some pine needles and herbs. Tastes bitter and fruity, medium bodied, dry mouth feel

3.7 Pours an almost black color with ruby tones and a medium tan head. Roasty aroma, coffee, ashes, pine and resin. Taste follows the aroma, ash notes, pine, citrus, resin, coffee and licorice, finishing with a strong bitterness on the aftertaste.
3.9 Black color with brown head. Aroma has sweet malt, caramel, fruity hops and a hint of roasted/slightly smoked malt. Taste starts with some bitter hops but continues with liquorice and some molasses. Finish has coffee bitterness and lingers with resiny hops. Medium body with soft carbonation. Quite nice beer, complex taste with well hidden alcohol.
3.6 Bottle (viking amarella). Black. Roasty malty nose, bit ashy, some cola, pretty intensive. Med full bodied, ashy smoke, dry ashyness, malts. Intensive flavourful. The ash is just on the brink of getting in the way, but theres enough coffee, dark dry chocolate to make it ok.
3.7 Draft at beertemple. Black pour. Aroma of smoked malt, mild roast, fresh fruity hop and toffee. Taste is creamy, with citrussy hop, licorice, mild roast, subtle smoke and some toffee. Tasty brew.
3.9 On tap at OIBF’16. Black colour, beige head. Aroma of lots of roast, light smoke, pine, salmiak, liquorice. Flavour of salty liquorice, both salmiak and Dutch "boerderijdrop", heavy roast, light smoke, saltiness, some caramel sweetness, firm hoppy bitterness. Light to medium bodied. Good.
4.1 Bottle from the Last Drop. Fourth of July, 2016. I’m listening to Chicago blues: Muddy Waters and Howlin’ Wolf and Koko Taylor and Willie Dixon and all of them. I remember once driving around the (already descending into ruins) Detroit on the 4th of July when I was 19 or so, watching people shoot illegal street fireworks out of their cars and blasting electric blues and thinking this has got to be pretty fucking great country where you can just turn on the radio and this shit is playing. The beer? Black. Huge dark-tan head. Monster-roasty aroma, hops nearly backgrounded. Hints of smoke but not crazy smoked. Lovely dark flavors, coffee and grapefruit like a dark IPA should have, but with this smoky augmentation that’s just over the moon. The rich dates are a surprise. Delicious. No hint of the 8% other than the massive flavor. I don’t drink dark beers all that often, I don’t drink high ABV beers all that often, but damn this is is a really great one. It wouldn’t be crazy to go 4.2 on this one, but I doubt it would hold up next time. So 4.1 it is. Love love love it!
3.6 On tap at the Oedipus International Beer Festival 2016, Amsterdam - day#1 (02-Jul-2016). Dark brown/black in colour with a medium sized beige coloured head. Aroma of citrus, dark fruit, malt and pine. Medium body and carbonation.Nice hoppy flavour - roasted chocolate malt and light bitter floral hops. A nice Black IPA.
3.7 From tap at Oedipus International Beer Festival 2016. Aroma is dark malt, resinous hops, roast, pine resin, mild smoke, grapefruit, chocolate. Flavour is light sweet and moderate bitter. Body is medium. Good Black IPA with a touch of smoke.
4.2 On tap @ Oedipus Int. Beer Festival 2016. Nose is fruity, molasses, floral. Body is dark brown, head is medium, brownish, mostly diminishing, good lacing. Aroma is grapefruit, roasted malt, dark fruits, dark chocolate, smoked old wood, tobacco, spices. Light sweet, heavy bitter. Finish is long lasting roasty heavy bitter which turns to very hoppy heavy bitterness. Medium body, dry texture, nearly flat carbonation. Starts with quite complex aroma turns into a simple very bitter beer, smoke is hardly present, great one. Should be categorized as black IPA.
