Stockyard Oatmeal Stout

Stockyard Oatmeal Stout

A deliciously creamy stout in the Irish tradition. This deep, coffee-colored beer has the aroma and flavor of chocolate, roasted oats and coffee with a rich tan head. Specially brewed for Trader Joe’s.

Formerly brewed by Goose Island, late 2010/early 2011 saw this beer’s production move to Gordon Biersch.

3.3 12 oz bottle from Trader Joe’s, poured into a pint glass. Black pour with a khaki head, long lasting lacing. Mild roast and coffee with a little chocolate, some dark fruit and a hint of molasses. Medium body, would recommend to friends!
3.7 A steady poor produces a three-finger thick, light brown tinged, dark tan colored head. The beer is a rich dark chocolate color that shows a brilliantly clear, gem toned Brown color when held up to the light. The aroma smells of toasted whole grain, brown bread with a bit of a roasted Edge to it. There is a touch of burnt fruit underneath as well, and also a brown malt caramelized character. The body has a solid viscous texture to it that gives us beer a medium mouthfeel that is not heavy, but is still nicely chewy. Sweet dark malt flavors are balanced by a burnt and roasted grain character that lingers in a long finish. Flavors of cocoa, milk chocolate, and rounded, lightly roasted, smooth coffee also play a prominent role here. There is a burnt bitterness to the Finish, which also helps to nicely balanced the soft dark malt sweetness that is found here. There is a soft buttery note here that melts in well with the dark chocolate and dark malt character. This is a really nice beer, especially for the price. I think this may become a regular thing that is stocked in my beer fridge for when I want something chewy and roasted.
4.5 Chocolatey, roasted oats, touch of coffee, delicious. True it’s a bit on the bubbly side, but I don’t get the funky aftertaste. Aftertaste is toast and espresso. Tastes good even at room temperature. One of my favorite beers.
3.5 Aroma is burnt toast and very mild grape juice. The flavor is roasted malts, dark chocolate, fruit and a slightly sweet/funky acidic finish.
3.6 Bottle from Trader Joe’s. Black with a khaki head. Mild roast and coffee with a little chocolate and a hint of molasses. Solid ashy bitter molasses flavor. Medium bodied.
3.4 Nice black with a tan head. Good malt flavors. The oatmeal is mild and nice. Despite the low ABV, it lends itself to syurpiness, though the carbonation helps. I still detect that trader J's beer taste, but this one is more well-covered. Tasty.
2.9 Pretty decent Oatmeal Stout. Easy to drink. Lighter than many. Carameley and chocolatey.
3.6 Bottle pour into nonic pint glass from TJ's. Appearance is almost opaque black--very dark brown/mahogany with light source directly behind--with light sparkle at the edge of the glass, finger-width light brown head with poor retention and trace lacing. Aroma is roasted malt (like burnt marshmallow), wood, dark fruits, light cocoa. Taste is roasted malt, dark chocolate. Palate is medium-to-full bodied with smooth, thick texture, average-to-lively carbonation and bittersweet roasted malt finish. Overall, the taste doesn't quite deliver on the aroma and it's a little over carbonated. But, I've had a lot of TJ's beers lately and this is one of the better ones.
3.4 (12oz bottle) AROMA: soft chocolate, oatmeal, celery, black beans, APPEARANCE: dark dark brown, almost black, opaque, dark coffee head, oily, lingers TASTE: coffee, cream, hint of vanilla, moderately bitter chocolate, light cookie dough PALATE: soft, medium body, not ultra rich, a little creaminess, smooth/slick with a touch of lingering bitterness. OVERALL: a good beer but just an average stout, smooth and drinkable, nice coffee/chocoate notes but otherwise a bit simple. Would make a good starter stout for someone juat getting into heavier beers.
3.2 It pours a dark brown color with a creamy light brown head. The aroma is a bit acidic with heavy dark malts. A little coffee-like with some buttered toffee and nuts .The flavor is full bodied and very creamy on the palate. Lots of dark malts with heavy roast in the finish. Overall, it has more of a toasted malt profile except for the finish which borders on burnt. I’m not getting the acidity I picked up in the aroma, which is a good thing in my book. A bit of a simplistic beer, but not bad.
3.7 Dark black. Foamy tan head. Creamy. Mild chocolate. Not sweet. Really, this is a 3.35? This is a decent, not a 4, but a decent sweet stout.
4.1 Aroma: intensive nose of caramel, roasted malt, wood and grape Taste: mild and balanced roasted malt with caramel, oats and hints of grass. Creamy body. Great brew
4.6 Excellent beer from Trader Joe's. Will definitely buy again, if I can find it. Dark stout. Smooth after taste. Glad it was suggested by a Trader Joe's manager.
3.6 Black with a brown head - Roasted malt aroma with some coffee notes as well - Roasted malt body with some notes of coffee and chocolate with bitterness - The roasted malt and some nice bitterness goes into the finish - This was good
3.4 From bottle to glass. Creamy roast aroma. Brown with light brown highlights. Taste is roast and cream. Not bad.
2.8 Far more lactose-based than oatmeal-based, to me at least, with a thinner-than-expected body and bittersweet chocolate taste. Poured to an uncommonly huge head with a lot of carbonation. Just OK.

3.9 Pours like oil. SMells like oatmeal and tastes even more so. An oatmeal stout that delivers on its namesake.
3.0 Ruby black pour with thin tan head silky mouth feel and roasty aroma with some coffee burnt chocolate nice rich bitter and taste and bit of hop
3.3 12oz bottle pours out a dark brown topped with a small tan head. Nose is roast malts some chocolate dark fruit and a little smoke. Taste is more of the dark roast chocolate malt sweetness and a fruit note.
2.9 3rd June 2016, 12oz bottle into a Corsendonk badged stemmed tulip. Looked fine, black with a lasting tanned head. Over roasted oats and malts give the aroma and taste some dark chocolate and ground coffee flavours. Nothing too exciting but nothing wrong with it either.
3.3 Drank from the bottle. Smell is bitter oatmeal, malt, and leathery. Taste follows. A decently balanced, not too sweet or pungent beer. Great for the price
4.1 Trader Joe’s brand beer. It’s an Oatmeal Stout with an label that suggests an old Irish tradition.
4.4 Pretty smooth. Slightly on the tobacco side. ---Rated via BeerBuddy for iPhone.
3.6 12 ounce bottle from Trader Joe’s. Black color topped by a large foamy tan head. Rich roast malt nose has buttery notes. Sweet roasted malt flavor has notes of dark fruit and coffee. Midtaste brings dark cherries, oats and cocoa. finish is chewy and has a sticky mouthfeel.
3.5 12 ounce bottle from TJs. Pours a dark brown color with a small white head. A nice roast and dark fruit nose. The flavor is pretty good; a big metallic strong roast, cocoa, some dark grainy oats. Dark fruit flavored tobacco.
3.5 Interesting one, a little swe. NOt so oatmealy but still good shape and fine to enjoy in an evening
3.6 Bottle. Pours dark brown color with a thick tan head. Aroma of roasted malt, chocolate, some coffee and grain. Taste of Roasted malt, dark chocolate, with oat and just a bit of coffee. Mild bitterness and a fairly dry finish. Full body, thick and creamy with a subtle richness. Enjoyable beer.
3.6 From 12oz bottle, from Trader Joe’s, about $1.17 for single bottle, around $6-7 for 6-pack Aroma: sweetness, not coffee but maybe cream Appearance: black, somewhat clear, nice tan colored head Taste: Medium sweet, light bitter Palate: full body, creamy texture, average carbonation, bitter dry finish Overall: More chocolate than coffee. Very sweet. Not a bad Oatmeal Stout. Nice body and head. Roasty and malty with some good bits of chocolate in there. Very silky and rich in flavor. Would have liked a little more aroma, but it’s a fine stout. Pretty solid Oatmeal Stout. Good value beer.
2.8 Poured from a bottle. Dark brown color, medium tan head. Mild malt and yeast. Medium body with a acrid malt flavor and a slight watery finish.
