Stone 16th Anniversary IPA

Stone 16th Anniversary IPA

We’ve been loving creating Collaboration beers with great creative brewers from all over the world these last several years-unique beers that would never have existed without the free-flowing imagination and idea generation of the collaborative process. However, when it comes to the Stone Anniversary Ales, it’s all us. Yet, it is indeed still a collaboration with great creative brewers (if we do say so ourselves). We’re talking about our own brewing team, of course. And while some of our beers, anniversary and otherwise, have been designed by a single person, the Stone 16th Anniversary IPA was definitely a team effort.

This year our brewing team was inspired by some exotic-ish additions of the lemony persuasion. Yes, it’s a Double IPA (can you really say you’re surprised?), but as we strive to do with all our Stone Anniversary Ales of the let’s-take-this-IPA-in-a-new-direction variety, we’ve brewed up a Stone-worthy divergence from tradition. The amount of rye malt we used isn’t quite enough to warrant the appellation "Rye IPA," but it still adds hints of spiciness that contrast deliciously with the tropical fruit flavors and aromas of the Amarillo and Calypso hops. Add a few European specialty malts, some lemon verbena, and three more hop varieties to the mix, and you have a highly complex brew melding both bitter and fruity hop notes with rich toasted malt character punctuated by nuances of spicy rye and subtle lemon.

3.7 Another DIPA from Stone, amazing how they find new ways to brew a big hoppy ale, but they do, credit to them. Nice aroma, massively citrusy, great color and lacing. Tropical fruit is first and foremost in the flavor, really nice, almost New Zealand IPA like. Yum
3.5 Pours orange yellow some fleeting head and lace. Aroma is lemon, pine, starfruit...just OK. Flavor is fairly sweet, light lemon, spicy grapefruit, bracing pith bitter finish. Feel is slick and sticky. Kind of underwhelming though a nicely different hop fix.
3.6 Bottle 22fl.oz. [ Courtesy of my Secret Winter Santa ]. Clear medium to dark orange colour with a average to large, frothy, good lacing, mostly lasting, off-white head. Aroma is moderate malty, caramel, moderate to heavy hoppy, herbs, spicy hops, lemen grass, eucalyptus. Flavour is moderate to heavy sweet and bitter with a long duration, spicy hops, peppery, hoppy. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft. [20131123]
2.5 Saw this at the local rosauers. Pours copper and clear with a sheet of white foam. Smells medicinal with sweet lemons, orange peels, peppercorn, tea tree and just a hint of licorice at the end. Flavor is sweet with the lemon oil, alcohol, caramel and very little hops for the likes of stone. Medium bodied with moderate Carb and dry fimish. Not for me. Serving type: bottle 08-13-2012
3.7 Bomber at the end of a long party...nice amber, tropical, bubble gum, booze, hops, mod body and carbonation, bitter and fruity on the finish.
3.2 Appearance: Copper and garnet under a bread crust hued head that fades bubbly into a full layer with sticky lace clinging to the sides of the glass. Nose: Pine oil and mint – very oily and sticky. Spearmint. A little swampy in the back. Orangey hop oils. Palate: Mint and spearmint front and center. Sticky oily pine sap and orange oils. Green and herbaceous in the middle. Cucumber. The finish is all pine – like standing amidst a pine forest while licking the pine needles. Final Thoughts: Another solid IPA from Stone that diverges some from their usual pine and grapefruit hop bombs, which is a good thing. Overall though, for an anniversary beer I was expecting something a little more off the chain or unusual.
3.1 Bottle @ Scooper Tasting in Ulfborg. Pours hazy orange amber with small off-white head. Clear aroma of fruit, citrus and flowers, with notes of hops. Sweetish, malty and fruity flavour, interacting wisely with bitter, hoppy notes, ending on a bittersweet and sourish note. Allright but I am used to better things from Stone.
3.5 Ulfborg weekend celebration of nothing in particular. Hazy orange with a lasting off-white head. Sweet caramel aroma with citrus and peach hops. Sweet malty flavour with citrus and peach hops, a touch of mint and a very bitter finish. Quite a bit of alcohol showing
3.2 Bottle @ Invasion U.S.A, Ulfborg 2013. Pours hazy orange with a creamy white head. Lots of caramel and bread - that Stone thing. Citrus hops beneath. Way too malty to be really good.
3.7 Bottle @ fonefan tasting. Clear amber with an off-white head. Aroma is sweet, malty, caramel and moderate hoppy - spicy and old hops. Flavor is quite sweet and rather bitter. Dry and rather bitter finish. 231113

3.8 Appearance: Hazy dark golden color with a fine white head that leaves a nice lacing. Aroma: Fine grapefruit hoppy, malty and tropical fruity. Palate: Medium to full body. Tad sweet and a fine bitterness. Average carbonation. Taste: Rich grapefruit hoppy, tropical fruity and a malty back. Overall impression: Lovely tasty evening sipper. Personal stats: Bottle from a trade with Nisse666
3.7 22oz bottle. Pours a clear golden orange color with a foamy white head that settles to a small cap. Pungent lemon pith, citrus rind, pine, spicy herbal aroma that initially smells almost minty. Balanced flavors throughout, with lots of spice, pithy lemon rind, pine, grapefruit, spice, and herbs - everything blends evenly and nothing is overbearing. Medium to full body, resinous, with smooth carbonation.
3.8 pours a orange to honey color with a white head. the aroma is hoppy, with citrus, grapefruit, and some spicyness. the flavor is full of citrus, grapefruit, and maltyness with a finish of spice. The finish is extremely smooth leaving you wanting more. This is well balanced and very tasty.
3.8 Pours deep amber with lots of head. Aroma of fruit, particularly pineapple. Very sweet at the beginning of the taste, which turns to bitter hop flavor, some bitter aftertaste. Medium bodied. A good imperial.
3.6 0.5 l bottle @ grove. Light amber colour with a thick white head. Heavy malty, caramel and hoppy aroma, same in rhe taste. Iight body.
3.8 Cask at Stone 17th. Pours golden with an off white head. Aroma of malt, fruitiness some citrus and caramel. Flavor is sweet and malty with some bread, citrus, caramel and bitterness.
3.7 Cask @ Stone 17th Anniversary Pours slightly hazy golden with a white head. Aroma has notes of malt, caramel, citrus, grape, orange, pine and peach. Taste is medium to heavy sweet and medium bitter with a long warm, caramel and fruity finish. Body is full, texture is oily, carbonation is soft to flat.
3.7 Cask at the Stone 17th anniversary festival. Columbus edition. Almost clear, dark golden in color, topped by a small, white head. The aroma is quite sweetish, pine cones and peaches and some resins. Bitter flavor with pine cones and some peaches. Full body, warming and smooth on the palate. Long finish. Pretty decent this one. 130817 Bottle. Had the regular bottled edition a little more than one year after the release. It’s still a fine beer, but it’s quite obvious it’s been cellared for some time. Anyway, it’s a quite pleasant beer, and as the bottle sample was this old, I don’t change my rating. Would’ve added it at 6-4-6-4-13-3.3 if I was to. 131123
3.6 22 ounce bottle. Hazy orange color topped by a thick rocky beige head. Perfumy lemon malt aroma. Rich toasted malt flavor has obvious lemony notes. Lot’s of complex hops come through. Tastes a lot like a lemon cough drop. Lot’s of citrus hops throughout. Finishes bitter and dry.
4.0 Bottle from Pacific Liquor: Poured a pitch black liquid accompanied with a tan colored layer of fluffy foam head. In the aroma, the nose is dominated by citrus scented hops that give off an herbal fragrance. Palate is oily and yet leaves behind a sticky resin and sour taste. The flavor is intensely bitter with a strong punch of green hops that taste of citrus fruits such as grapefruit, orange peel, tangerine and lemon. Also, there is a rich flavor of black malts that carry this black IPA through and thus establishing it as a prime example of how a real black IPA should taste.
3.7 Tap into frozen mug at Oasis..grrr. Big and rich, I would’ve guessed 8.5%, pretty nice for 10%. The rye is actually well incorporated, still pretty noticeable, adds some extra sweet, chewy, sugary gingerbread undertones..which almost have a buttery touch. Good, but not so exciting for Stone. Enjoyable enough, well crafted.
2.9 Definitely not doing this beer a justice rating it this late but a tickers gonna tick. I got this via a local for local trade and it is a bit past it's prime. I'm sure I would have loved it fresh but alas, I never will know. I can pick up the rye spiciness and some of the lemon but the hops have faded.
3.4 Pours a deep hazy rusty orange color with a nice head. Nose is citrus, with strong pine and resin. Taste is bitter, spicy with a strong malty caramel presence. nice lacing. Finish is bitter, moderate duration and ends on strong notes of pine, and resin. Quaff Score 6 / 10
3.4 Pours a dark orange with an off white head and sweet, hoppy, pine aroma. Taste is heavy bitter throughout, lots of hops, pine, resin, rye, caramel and fruit notes with a strong bitter finish. Complex, nice DIPA
3.4 Poured from a bomber dated August 2012, so probably past it’s prime. Cloudy orange/copper with foam off white head. Aroma is caramel malt mixed with spice, pine and booze. Lots of resin and pine on the taste as well as some bready malt. Not too sweet, mostly bitter. Chewy mouthfeel. Overall, a decent DIPA, but I’m pretty sure I missed out by not having this when fresh - I didn’t pick up much of the lemon or other citrus in my bottle.
4.6 YUMMO! Another fine IPA from our friend’s at Stone. Yeah, there isn’t much more I can say than: I’m gonna get another bottle!
