Stone 17th Anniversary Götterdämmerung IPA

Stone 17th Anniversary Götterdämmerung IPA

Our latest anniversary beer, starring an all-German cast of malt and hops, is yet one more glorious example of a Stone IPA brewed outside the box. Our brewers have brought their experiments with German hops to fruition, leaving convention behind to create this hefty IPA entirely with pilsner malts. These provide a superbly crisp mouthfeel, while a unique mix of noble and new-school hop varieties adds layers of bright, bitter flavors. Despite the daunting name, this beer isn’t designed to bring about the end of the world, but it just might destroy some of your preconceived notions of what an IPA can be.

3.4 Draft. Clear golden color, fluffy whitebread. Aroma of floral citrus. Taste is similar. Decent enough
3.2 Draft... Clear amber pour with a small, creamy, white head. The aroma is a mélange of toffee, honey, tea biscuit and peppery hops, and. Full-bodied and fatty with moderate carbonation. The flavor is loaded with metallic bitterness to go with the honey and toffee malt sweetness. Finishes bitter, metallic and a bit alcoholic. Meh.
3.3 From notes. Pour is hazed straw yellow with a white ring. Nose is bready with a fair bit of dough, notes of tangerine and citrus hops. Taste is also doughy, lots of doughy malt with a balance of citrus hops and some golden fruit. Moderate bitterness through the highly carbonated finish with a medium body.
3.8 Bottle. Deep golden colour with an off-white head. Aroma is hop, malt, peaches. Flavour is pine, herbs, hop, peaches, alcohol, tea, pine, herbs. Full body. Nice beer.
3.7 At GABF 2013. Pours clear yellow, medium head. Aroma is earthy and a little spicy hops, some pure orange pulp, floral hops, citrus grapefruit, lemon.
3.3 Nice clear golden pour. Pine, citrus and grass for aroma. Heavy pine flavor with a tinge of soap. Nice heavy mouthfeel with a sharp bitter finish.
4.0 Hazy golden tinted blonde coloured body with a nice light straw glow all with a large three centimetre tall white head. Aroma of fresh grassy and herbal hops, alcohol, very light malt and a ton of white grape juice - very strong and assertive. Medium-bodied; Strong herbal and grassy hop notes throughout with a good bitterness and a large body of the malt right behind. Aftertaste shows the depth and assertiveness of the flavours with the malt at first then immediately overtaken by the hops, the bitterness and especially by the grapey sweetness on the finish. Overall, a surprisingly good IPA with a lot of hop notes, a ton of white grape flavour and a smaller malt body that really hides this at 9,5% abv - I thought it was around 7,5% or so. I’m happy this was so good, since I usually don’t buy into names/reputations, but this one is a very good beer and should be had if you can still find it! I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased from Belmont Station on 11-November-2013 for US$7,27 sampled at home in Washington as my very first beer back in the states after a 2,5 week trip to asia - the land of mostly pale lagers - so this was a nice treat!
3.6 Pours a clear golden with white head. Floral notes, pine, citrus, and grapefruit on the nose; follows onto the palate. Finishes with a little grassy hop note.
3.8 Bottle. Pours hazy golden amber nice white head. Nose is mildly citrusy, Some pine. Some sourness here as well.
3.3 Bottle @ Maxi. Pours golden with a white head. Aroma of bready malt, caramel, light yeast, light bitter flowery hops, pine, resin. Flavor is malt, bready, caramel, flowery, pine, resin. Medium body, soft carbonation, bitter finish with some alcohol. Clearly not fresh. 120414
3.4 Bottle @ Maxi. Slightly hazy light orange, small white head, some lacing. Aroma, malty, sweet, hoppy, orange, faint pine, passion fruit. Taste, malty base with some sweetness, hops, pine, resin. Dry bitter mouth feel. Long bitter aftertaste.
3.9 bottle. Golden with one finger head. The European hops used in this hop bomb provide quite a different taste that what I’m used to. While plenty hoppy, this seems less harsh, and maybe a bit more earthy than a typical Stone offering. Still delicious though.
3.7 A - pours a golden yellow color which a small, off white head which leaves lots of lacing on the way down S - mild citrus, hints of wheat. T - mild maltiness followed up by an absolute assault of hops. Deep piney, resiny bitterness. M - thick with ample carbonation. Very resiny D - huge beer that is a complete hop bomb. Unbalanced but delicious
4.1 One full tick up from the unbelievable regular Stone IPA. This is one we should hope they keep in long term production.
4.0 cloudy gold-light amber color; citrusy, floral hop aroma; a bitter, hoppy beer; light malt background with lots of hops and notes of alcohol; a little fruity; dry, bitter finish
3.0 Very sweet! There is a strong berry flavor to this - perhaps raspberry - yes I think it’s raspberry! Not my favorite IPA but certainly drinkable for a change of pace.
4.1 bottle - Pours hazy yellow with a lingering off-white head. It has a pleasant aroma led by citrus and floral hops. The flavor has big hops bitterness with complex hops character that spicy/herbal as well as some citrus. Medium bodied with a bitter finish, this is a strong, dangerously drinkable beer.
3.8 Pours a hazy orange colour with a thin white head. Aroma is citrus, grapefruit and orange, floral, grassy notes, and orange pekoe tea. The orange pekoe tea is a main component of the flavour profile accompinied by citrus grapefruit notes, resinous hops, the malty toffee notes are in the background but still help to balance everything out. Solid.
3.9 Nice aroma, cloudy amber color, minimal head, medium bitter, slightly sour, medium body, lively with a bitter finish
3.7 IPA 8/15/13 Pours gold with a big fluffy white head, classic Stone quality brewing. Aroms has grassy, floral, tea on nose. Flavor is big, some straw-like malt accompanying robust spicy and leafy hops with strong bitterness in tow. A bit hot and alcoholic towards finish. ABV contributes a weighty lick on an otherwise crisp body. 3.7.
3.4 Hmm, not one of my favorite IPAs. It has a good cloudy amber pour w/ a good retaining white head that leaves lacing. The aroma is surprisingly mild at best & not all that enticing. The taste is fairly subtle as well. There’s a big bitterness kick upfront but it quickly fades & almost finishes clean. The 9.5% is hidden well but this just doesn’t have the flavor complexity I was hoping for!
4.0 Malty sweetish aroma with some grapefruit hops. Taste is some grapefruit but mostly piney bitter hops. The malt balances well though making it very enjoyable. Bit of a sweet finish but well balanced.
3.7 Bomber from Country Club Liquors. Nose is light pine resin, floral, and some sweet caramel malts. Hazy urine yellow with a medium, heavy lacing, pale yellow head. Flavor is only lightly bitter, hints of fruitiness, and a hint of alcohol warmth. Finishes with light bitterness.
3.8 Hazed yellow pour with creamy white head and lace. Aroma is resiny hops and sweet malt. Sweet malty start with a nice bitter finish. Smooth carbonation and medium body. nice beer
4.4 The aroma is of German hops, and more modern hops with aroma such as citrus and pine. There is also a slight malty sweetness in the aroma and you can also notice the 9.5 % ABV. This beer is a venture into the German malts and hops by Stone and I felt it was very successful. Color is golden, slightly cloudy. When tasting you notice the hop bitterness. The beers I have tried by Stone have showed me that they are not shy of using hops, and this is no exception. Ther eis lots of hops, but it is still a balance there with maltiness and alcohol. The mouthfeel is crisp, the body is medium and the foam holds up well.
3.8 [My bottle (660ml) shared with HogTownHarry, GregClow, jercraigs & mabel] Pours a hazy golden-orange with a small semi-lasting frothy white head. Aroma is pretty much all hops, resiny, floral and grassy along with a bit of fruit and alcohol. Flavour: Wow, this is a big beer, hoppy and boozy. Big bitter finish. Medium to full bodied. An interesting beer with different hops, I thought it was quite good.
3.7 Draft. Pours golden yellow with small white head. Smell is very floral, earthy hops, orange peel. Taste follows with almost a old grapefruit notes, grassy, lemon notes. Tasty!
3.9 January 31, 2014 - with blankboy, gregclow, jercraigs & mabel. 22oz bottle c/o blankboy. Hazy gold, average off-white head. Floral and heathery bitter aroma, some alcohol - odd fruity light aroma - what’s the hop? German? Okay. Taste follows - grassy, fruity, pretty dry, emerging grapefruity pith. Average body, a bit astringent, decent carbonation, and a medium-long dry pithy bitter finish and linger. Different - really good.
3.6 Reviewed from notes. Consumed 10/07/13. The appearance has a hazy golden orange colored body, one finger white foamy head, leaves some fairly thick lacing. The smell has a large amount of grapefruit, a fair amount of grassy resinous hops. The taste maintains a citrusy sweetness throughout the beer, grapefruit aftertaste, sticky sweet finish. The palate is about a light to medium, fairly sessionable, carbonation is good for the style and for me, actually this is very smooth but I’m thinkin’ that’s due to the fact I’m having this closer to expiration (10/31/13) Overall, this is a pretty good DIPA that I would have again.
3.7 Pours a hazy orange/yellow with soapy, filmy head. Hop profile is interesting, spicy and very dry and bitter. Not your usual stone IPA, but I’m impressed. Not just a west coast hop brewer.
