Stone 20th Anniversary Encore Series: 10th Anniversary IPA

Stone 20th Anniversary Encore Series: 10th Anniversary IPA

Stone 10th Anniversary IPA harkens back to our earlier Anniversary Ales, with abundant hopping at many stages of the brewing process. Appropriately, the aroma is over-the-top, with pronounced piney and resiny hop flavors combined with tropical fruit esters and more subtle notes of toasted malts and alcohol. Our Stone 10th Anniversary Ale weighs in at 10% alcohol by volume (perfect for a 10th anniversary beer), and has a little more color and malt character than our other IPAs. In addition to using the new Summit hop variety in the brewhouse to provide the powerful bitterness, we went back through our records and found some of our favorite hops over the years, and used them to flavor this brew, including Chinook, Crystal, and large doses of Simcoe in the dry-hop to provide a huge, complex, piney, fruity and floral hop character. This is a colossal beer, big in every sense: hoppy, malty, rich, and strong! Right up our alley.

4.0 Bottle - fair size foamy head, medium copper color, big pine hop aroma and flavor, with some tropical/citrus fruits coming through in the taste, solid bready malt backbone, resiny finish, very good overall
4.1 An attractive dark orange with a white head. Not overboard on the bitterness. Big on the hops. Duh. It’s pretty fine.
4.2 Very enjoyable. Crisp and citrus deliciousness. Well balanced and delicious. Nice.
3.7 On tap @ Monk’s Kettle. Pours clear bright orange amber with thin white head. Aroma is sweet caramel malt, dry herbal lightly citrusy hops. Taste is thick syrupy caramel malt, hops are vegetal, herbal, lightly dank and citrusy. Really malt-driven for a Stone DIPA, interesting evidentiary take on how styles have progressed in the last decade.
3.8 Bomber. Tropical fruit hop aroma with floral and piney hop and sweet malt notes. Pours orange-amber colored with a huge off white head that has excellent retention and some soapy lacing. Starts with sweet malt and sweet tropical fruit hop flavors. Finishes dry and smooth with some piney hop bitterness as well as some floral hops. Pretty nice IPA.
4.0 Slightly hazy orange pour with a single finger white head. Tons of lace present. Aroma is full of tropical fruits, mango and passion fruit with a hint of pine. Taste is full of mangos, just oozing, ripe mangos. Medium bodied. Slight alcohol bite on the finish as well as a bit of estery yeast. Really nice beer.
3.7 Tap. Clear, orange, frothy, tan foam, medium bitterness, medium sweetness, medium body, oily feel, average carbonation, & bitter finish.
3.8 Draught at Arcadium. Dark orange in color. Big citrus notes hops and a light malt profile.
3.6 Type: 22-oz. bottle Glass: Lagunitas mason jar From: Costco in Fashion Valley (San Diego), Calif. Price: $19.99 (for a variety 4-pack) Purchased: Oct. 20, 2016 Consumed: Oct. 22, 2016 Reviewed as: American Double / Imperial IPA Misc.: Bottled Aug. 18, 2016; 2016 release, 2006 label Had been wanting to pick up this Stone 20th Anniversary 4-pack and finally saw it for the first time at Costco for $19.99. Done. I did know that Chris H. loved this one from back in the day and the new release as well. Hoping this one was better than the fifth, which I thought was just above average. Poured a copper amber-to-red-brown amber hazy color with two fingers of khaki frothy white head. Could see a few bubbles coming up along the sides of the glass. Very good spiderweb foamy lacing. Good retention. (Sight - 3.75) Kind of different on the nose, getting sugary caramel, toffee malts, papaya, mango rind, light orange blossom, cantaloupe, melon, herbal, menthol, peach and a touch of minty leaf. (Smell - 3.75) Tasted better than the nose. Getting juicy tropical and malty at the same time. Bitter mango rind, papaya, cantaloupe, melon, sugary dark orange blossom, peach, apricot, some red grapefruit, herbal, menthol, pineapple, honey, some grassy notes and sugary pine. Boozy, but not 10 pct. ABV boozy. (Taste - 4.00) Medium body. Creamy-to-sticky texture. Lively-to-average carbonation. Long, boozy finish. (Feel - 4.25) This was a pretty good double IPA and probably really good for 2006. Still good now, but not great. (Overall - 4.00) 3.95 89 B+
4.0 Chock-full of tropical and candies citrus goodness. Some sweet light malt. Slight resin in the aroma. Full, slick body. Orange with a tall white head that leaves quite the lacing in the glass. A pleasure.
4.1 Draft from Whole Foods in Upper Arlington: Amber pour with eggshell white head. Aroma of floral and caramel malt. Tastes are perfect citrus, grapefruit, floral, malty, pine mix. Little resiny late. Insane balance and drinkable for 10abv. Can still wow me with their ipa’s after all these years.
4.1 (Bottle) Clear orange body with a medium, creamy, eggshell head. Aroma of citrus (orange, grapefruit), caramel malt, light pine. Silky smooth medium body; oily mouthfeel; chewy. Nicely balanced sweetness, bitterness, and alcohol. Fruity and slightly floral; some bubblegum, orange, and grapefruit; very sweet but strong bitterness cuts through, and alcohol blends everything together nicely. I really enjoyed this one.
4.0 Solid hop and banana aroma with a chewy malt profile with a bit of nut flavor within. Nice IPA.
3.3 Poured from a bottle. Cloudy gold. Small head. Some tropical fruits on the nose. Some sweetness followed by a bitter finish.
4.2 This is just missing on the nose. A very balanced overhopped over malted DIPA. Really this is what I would want from a DIPA. Perfect sticky thickness. Perfect flavors on the tongues. An awesome beer in every way. Aroma only thing lacking it has a bit of alcohol and strong stickiness. I want to brew this one.
3.2 Pours a half finger of head on hazy straw body. Aroma is orange, pine and grapefruit. Taste is big and bold grapefruit and pine bitterness. It grabs the back of the mouth. Texture is thicker.
3.7 Pours a golden amber color with a white head. Citrus, floral, resinous hop, caramel and biscuit aroma. Resinous hop, floral, pine, caramel, grapefruit and biscuit flavors. Medium body and carbonation. Pine and resinous hop finish.
4.2 22 ounce bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 8/18/2016. Pours slightly hazy deep orange/amber color with a 1-2 finger dense off white head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass. Aromas of big apricot, peach, pineapple, tangerine, mango, papaya, grapefruit, lemon/orange peel, light pine, honey, lightly toasted bread, herbal, and floral/grassy earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of bright/juicy citrus/tropical hops and moderate pale malt sweetness; with great strength. Taste of huge apricot, peach, pineapple, tangerine, mango, papaya, grapefruit, lemon/orange peel, light pine, honey, lightly toasted bread, herbal, and floral/grassy earthiness. Moderate pine/herbal/citrus peel bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of apricot, peach, pineapple, tangerine, mango, papaya, grapefruit, lemon/orange peel, pine, honey, lightly toasted bread, and herbal/floral/grassy earthiness on the finish for a while. Incredible complexity, robustness, and balance of bright/juicy citrus/tropical hops and moderate pale malt sweetness; with a great malt/bitterness balance, and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Light dryness from bitterness, increasing through the glass. Medium carbonation and fairly full bodied; with a very smooth, moderately creamy/grainy/sticky, and slightly slick/resinous balanced mouthfeel that is awesome. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a mild warmth lingering after the finish. Overall this is an outstanding DIPA! All around awesome complexity, robustness, and balance of bright/juicy citrus/tropical hops and moderate pale malt sweetness; very smooth and dangerously easy to drink for the big ABV. A highly enjoyable offering.
4.2 On tap at Elizabeth Station on Stone 20th Anniversary event. Pours a clear copper golden with a tan head. Aroma is sweet, with tropical fruits notes. Taste is very fruity with medium levels of sweetness and tropical fruits bitterness. Candied citruses bitterness aftertaste. Excellent.
3.8 Pours a dirty orange brown with thin lasting head and clean lacing. Aroma is a good, subtly strong mix of dry hopped goodness, booze, and caramel malts. Taste is interesting - pretty vacant up front, into a malty rich middle, then a bit of hops come through to dry it out just enough in the end. Low evidence of ABV. Not bad!
3.7 Aromas of caramel, apricot, tangerine, amber malts, some faint rye, herbs and cracker. Pours a golden copper with a thin white foam. Taste brings clean bitterness alongside candied caramel, sweet tangerine, apricot, stale grapefruit, stone fruit and metallic maltiness. Mid palate brings bright orange, citrus, orange zest, tangerine zest, lemon spruce and deep amber malts. Finishes with some bright citrus notes and distinctive caramel, deep malt, wort syrup and cracker notes. Overall, this is more on the malty side yet some oddball hop notes dance about. Sort of jumbled flavor profile on this one. B+ rating.
3.6 On tap at World of Beer (Charlottesville, VA). Citrusy aromas, orangey, light lemon. Clear orange-amber with a mostly lasting white head. A little sweet, somewhat savory, envelops the whole tongue. Medium-full bodied.
3.9 651 ml. bottle. Shared with Gabe. Pours a medium, well retained, tiny bubbled, ivory head, over a clear amber (SRM 10) body......nose is light toasted malts, with cracker, biscuit notes, pine, resin, citrus tones from the hops, balance to the hops......taste is floral, honey sweet, with toasted malt tones, pine, resin, tangerine, melon from the hops, finishing with a moderate hop bitterness, balance to the hops......mouth feel, medium slightly sticky body, alcohol warmth present, carbonation adds mild acid. The malts aerr milder than many in the history of the style, but are bigger than many of the more recent craft releases. The sweetness is a bit simple, but the hops correct for that. BJCP 9/3/14/5/8
3.8 No head, light amber. Lemon? Draft beer at the bar in Richmond. Pretty good.
3.6 Pours a rich, amber-hued gold with nice off-white head. Nose is brightly resinous, rich apricot and drippy pineapple, gently toasted malt, some candied orange and lemon, healthy dose of fresh flowers too. Flavor is gently-candied tropical fruits, pineapple, papaya, red apple, little bit of canned tangerines, elusive pine notes, leafy wet flowers linger hard. Medium-full body. Very balanced, heavy on the bright tropical medley, big flowers. It’s very good, but the balance skews a little high-noted and fruit-forward. Kind of a "diagonal" shape in the minds eye. Still great.
3.9 Bomber poured a deep gold hue w/ large foamy head and sticky lacing. Moderate tropical aromas. Initial flavor is light sweet w/ a bold bitter finish. Tastes are pineapple, graham cracker, piney and resinous hop, mango, and light toast. Medium bodied and light warmth to the finish.
3.4 Draught at Harry’s Hofbrau. Pine and resin aromas. Clear copper with small off white head. Taste is piney, sticky, alcohol burn. Side to side with the 5 year and the 5 year carried the day.
4.1 Bomber. Slightly cloudy Amber with a thick off white head and nice lacing. Aroma is dank pine resin, tropical fruit, and caramel. Taste is overripe tropical fruit, sweet citrus, caramel and honey. Thicker and juicy. Really awesome.
3.8 On draft at the brewery. Pours a clear copper with an off white head. Fruity nose. Flavors of tropical fruits and some caramel. Bitter finish.
3.4 22 oz bomber. 8/18/16 date. Golden orange color. Aroma is hops. Slightly floral. Taste is a uniquely spicy floral hop medium bitterness. Strong caramel malt.
