Stone 20th Anniversary Encore Series: 14th Anniversary Emperial IPA

Stone 20th Anniversary Encore Series: 14th Anniversary Emperial IPA

20th Anniversary Encore Series: Stone 14th Anniversary Emperial IPA is a dry-bodied ale that’s powerfully spicy with an earthy aroma. On the palate, peppery hops assert themselves early and often, with malt sweetness and a light biscuit flavor making a brief appearance before a long, complex and decisively bitter finish. There is one thing decidedly San Diego about this beer, and that’s its aggressive dose of hops. 20th Anniversary Encore Series: Stone 14th Anniversary Emperial IPA is brewed to enjoy fresh but true to its origin, ages especially well on a six-month long ocean voyage.

3.3 Pours a cloudy tangerine color with an eggshell-colored head. Malty nose subdued hop notes given that this is a Stone. Tangy flavor with much less of a malty quality than is noted in the nose.
3.9 Tap at J’s. Pours a deep orange/gold color with a finger of foam that lingers. Big peach nose with stone fruit and pine. Clean and crisp and lovely that lovely San Diego light body. Dank stone fruit as it warms. Smooth finish. So drinkable and the hops shine. Really nice.
4.0 It pours a cloudy orange with a whittish orange head. There are aromas of citrus, biscuit, and pepper. There are flavors highlight by sweet flavors and then bitterness. There are flavors of biscuit, citrus, pepper, and a slight bit or orange. There is also a bit of spiciness in the background. It has a moderate feel on the heavy side with moderate combination and a long lasting bitter finish. Overall, the balance is towards the hops but the malt background of biscuit makes this an extremely enjoyable beer.
4.1 8.9%ABV. Imperial IPA. Poured out gold. 8 SRM. Nose is malty, funky with dried urine. A preview of the malty palate that is to come at tasting. Warm orange juice in the nose. Allow it to come to room temperature some more and you start to get the aroma of a New York subway. Mouthfeel is full and soapy but not so much in the traditional sense. Palate has flavors of honey wheat toast, barley toast, juicy sweet with orange juice like character with a neat fuller biscuit, white bread toast. Hops are woody, bitter, incense. No fresh flavor profiles. Finish is woody, bitter. Goes on Favorites List!
3.8 22 oz bottle into a plastic hotel cup. Mostly clear golden orange with off-white head. Aromas of citrus, malt, floral notes, light tropical fruit. Tastes of citrus, floral notes, light malt, pine, light tropical fruit, hop oils. Medium body with a dry finish. Liked it more after it warmed up a bit.
4.4 Another awesome IPA by Stone. Reminiscent of the 10th anniversary. Deep orange yellow. Medium bitterness. Mild sweetness. Biscuit malty flavor. Lasting hoppy aroma. Easyish to drink, but higher ABV makes a take a few days to finish a bomber. Excellent.
4.2 Bomber from Whole Foods Market Fair Lakes Aroma: hay, earthy, caramel, citrus ppearance: clear golden with a white head Taste: medium sweetness, medium bitterness, Palate: medium body, creamy, soft carbonation, bitter finish Tasty
3.5 Bottle - Encore Series bomber. Pours clear orange, medium off-white head, good lacing. Aroma is caramel and pine, pretty old school. some melon and orange. Flavor is medium sweet, medium bitter, melon and pith. Medium body, creamy mouthfeel. Old school but well crafted.
3.9 8.9% Hazed orange, light creamy head. Spice orange herbal aroma caramel and toasted malts Taste reminds me of another brand of beer that is not stones. Not there usual hops, I know. Must be the kent goldings. I like this different hop taste to an ipa, goldings always are good though. Soft beer, malty with a spice sting, crisp zesty finish. Peppery. Orange, light caramel malts, marris otter?? Actually a pretty peppery predominant beer overall in hop profile. Foamy, bright clean.
3.0 Interesting aroma of white pepper, papaya, and a honey like malt background. Earthy and dank. Very nice looking shiny orange color with a bright white cap of foam that stays for a long time. The taste is also very peppery and dank with an off-putting snap pea flavor in the aftertaste. Definitely hoppy, but this is a weird mixture of hops. The palate is full and lightly carbonated, very good for the style. I liked everything about this beer except the taste, which is really the most important thing. I love Stone, but I’m not sure about their Anniversary Encore Series. I have tried a few that are not all that impressive.
3.3 Bomber. Cloudy gold with a frothy, off white head that lasts in a ring and laces some. Aromas of biscuit, grapefruit, yeast, light lemon and earthiness. Flavor is biscuit, grapefruit, pepper, yeast, lemon and light herbal notes. Medium bodied, smooth with a dry end.
2.9 Very light pour from a 22 oz bottle. Overly peppery with garlic aromas. One of my least favorite in Stone’s line.
3.6 Bomber. Biscuity malt aroma with notes of peppery, earthy and mild citrus hops. Pours cloudy pale golden colored with a huge off white head that has excellent retention and some lacing. Starts with biscuity malt flavor as well as peppery hop notes. Finishes dry with with light citrus hops before earthy and spicy peppery hops assert themselves with a bit of a bitter bite. Pretty nice imperial IPA.
3.8 Bottle. It poured a cloudy golden color with a white head. The aroma was of citrus, pine, hops and some lemon zest. The taste was similar to the aroma with more malts, citrus, lemon zest and hops. The aftertaste was of bitterness and spicy. Really good.
4.4 Enticing aroma pulled me right in. Perfect color, taste is excellent. Nicely spiced but not overly so which agrees very well with my preferred taste.
3.4 22 oz. bottle purchased at One Stop Market. Fresh Encore bottle with a date of 11-28-16, aroma is candied oranges, sweet malt, mild floral hints, canned peaches. Flavor shows citrus up front and a lot of sweet malt though out. Hops come in at the finish as a leafy floral character. Medium body; average carbonation and mouthfeel. WAY more sweet then I was hoping for. It also shows a tad of the alcohol. Not a huge fan of this one but serviceable.
3.9 Bottle from Boise Co-op. Medium amber with a slight haze, soft, spare bubbly head. Different from the start, aroma is earthy, musty and leather. Taste changes gears, mild citrus, savory spice, sweet malt. Hops are not immediately evident, but shiw themselves st the finish with a short, bitter bite. A bit funky, not your run of the mill DIPA.
4.1 22 ounce bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 10/22/2016. Pours slightly hazy golden orange color with a 1-2 finger dense and rocky off white head with great retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of big lemon, orange peel, grapefruit, pineapple, pear, peach, apricot, mango, melon, peppercorn, citrus rind, pine, honey, biscuit, herbal, and floral/grassy earthiness. Great complexity and balance of bright citrus/earthy hops, fruity yeast, and moderate bready malt notes; with great strength. Taste of huge lemon, orange peel, grapefruit, pineapple, pear, peach, apricot, mango, melon, peppercorn, citrus rind, pine, honey, biscuit, herbal, and floral/grassy earthiness. Good amount of pine/citrus rind/spicy bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of lemon/orange rind, grapefruit, pineapple, pear, peach, apricot, mango, melon, pepper, pine, honey, biscuit, and herbal/floral/grassy earthiness on the finish for a while. Great complexity, robustness, and balance of bright citrus/earthy hops, fruity yeast, and moderate bready malt flavors; with a great malt/bitterness balance, and minimal lingering hop astringency after the finish. Light-moderate dryness from bitterness, increasing through the glass. Medium carbonation and medium-plus body; with a very smooth, moderately sticky/resinous, and fairly creamy/bready balanced mouthfeel that is great. Minimal warming alcohol for 8.9%. Overall this is an excellent English style DIPA! All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of bright citrus/earthy hops, fruity yeast, and moderate bready malt flavors; very smooth and easy to drink for the big ABV. Great mix of earthy hop character in combination with English yeast fruitiness; nice malt backbone without being too sweet. A very enjoyable offering.
3.8 Bomber into tulip glass, very cloudy amber-hued golden color with white head. Aroma notes of biscuity malt, earthy grass and light tropical fruitiness. Taste adds dried pepper, bready sweetness, lemon zest, cedar wood, herbal spices, some garlic and light caramel. Heavy-medium body, moderate-low carbonation, oily, dry with lingering wood/earth bitter finish. This is certainly a unique DIPA, an English hops punch.
3.7 Bomber dated 10/22/16. Opaque golden pour. Little head and low lacing. Not much aroma. Very West Coast... lots of bitter but not much other flavor.
3.9 December 5, 2016 - on tap at Gerst. Murky orange pour with head that lasted. Aroma was a mix of hops and malt. Taste was consistent with the aroma and had a nice spicy / peppery finish.
3.0 Peppery spice, orange peel, rubbing alchohol. Fairly light. Not one of the better Stone IPA’s IMO.
3.1 Type: 22-oz. bottle Glass: Hawai‘i Bowl shaker pint glass From: Trader Joe’s in La Mesa (San Diego), Calif. Price: $7.99 Purchased: Oct. 26, 2016 Consumed: Oct. 31, 2016 Reviewed as: English IPA Misc.: 2016 release; Bottled Oct. 14, 2016; 2010 label Not really a fan of this style (averaging 3.483 for 13 reviews), but had to try this since I’d been on the Stone 20th Anniversary kick. Hoping this one is close to the 15th and 20th (in ratings, not in style). Poured a straw gold yellow, almost orange, cloudy color with two fingers of fizzy white head. Could not see any bubbles coming up from the bottom because of the haze. Average watery lacing. Decent retention. (Sight - 3.50) Smelled peppery spices out of the gate. Also got earthy grass, lemon zest, herbal, menthol, a touch of spoiled orange peel and hints of vomit. Different to say the least. (Smell - 3.25) Tasted better than the nose. More flavors, but still dies off pretty fast. More malty than hoppy, kind of like an ESB even. Very dry. Peppery flavors, very bitter orange peel, leafy pine, grass, bitter woody notes, lemon zest, herbal, hints of menthol, bready and honey. (Taste - 3.50) Medium body. Oily texture. Lively carbonation. Abrupt, spicy finish. (Feel - 3.50) Well this wasn’t terrible. Unusual is the better term I guess. Very dry, bitter and spicy. Still not all in on the style, but this was better than my average review on them. (Overall - 3.50) 3.44 78 B-
3.3 Hazy dark gold. Small cream head. Lacing. Malty aroma with earthy hops. Orange, wood. Malty taste with a dry bitter finish. Slight dirt aftertaste.
2.8 Poured from a bottle. Clear golden color, full frothy white head. Medium hops aroma. Medium body with a dry hops flavor and a medium finish.
4.3 I’m sitting at home to rate this one. I KNOW it will be better than yesterday’s crap, it’s brewed by Stone.........here goes> Bomber to my trusty shaker glass, pours slightly hazy gold. It’s got a two plus finger off white head that laces and retains fairly decent. As far as aroma goes, I’m getting a lot of earth and tropical fruits here. It’s bitter as hell, gotta love that. It has a medium body that’s just short of fizzy. It’s mouth feel? Slick, smooth AND resin? Wow. Finishes bitter. As for tasting notes, let’s see, mango, grapefruit on steroids, pepper, loads of caramel with a touch of spruce. Yesterday a lawyer bought me a Delirium Tremens that put him back 14 bucks! I’m laughing my ass of here! "See" ya soon.
3.9 An active white head on an appealing light caramel body. The nose lets you know this is a Stone of a different colour. An earthy, grassy bitterness blends with a sweet malt. The taste follows through on the nose in spades. Astringent grassy and earthy hops, pine, cedar, pepper, warming booze and sweet chewy malt are significant under tastes. Tougher to navigate that the typical fruit forward IIPA hop bomb. A punchy and biting variation, but I can’t say it is one of my favourite big Stone products.
3.4 The least of the Stone 20th anniversary re-releases, but an interesting beer for all it’s overstated quirkiness. Pours golden orange with average head. The aroma is grassy hops, garlic, some implication of malt. The flavor is bitter but a bit flat. More of that herbal, garlic-like quality makes it different but not at all special. I’m glad I got to try it, though.
3.9 Pours a dark gold with light white head. A strong tropical fruit and floral aroma. A sweet citrus taste with floral, tropical fruit, hops and pine with some sweet malts and caramel. A sweet malt and light bitter hoo aftertaste.
3.4 Who the fuck can resist an imperial IPA dry hopped with EAST KENT GOLDINGS!?! Pours orange. Smells decent. Like a fine British cock, finish is sweet and bitter. Not bad. Congratulations on Brexit.
