3.5 Orange with a white head. Aggressive hop profile overwhelmed the tastebuds leaving only the bitter remnants of a powerful IPA. Some sweetness in the finish. Could use a bit more finesse but it fit its era quite well.
3.9 Tap. Hazy, orange, frothy, tan foam, medium bitterness, medium sweetness, medium body, oily feel, average carbonation, & bitter finish.
3.9 On draft at the Earth Eagle. This captures that classic "West Coast" DIPA malt profile, with just a little bit of clean sweetness but otherwise nothing to interfere with the hops. Which is nice, because the hop profile is really interesting. My initial thought was "candy" -- the hops have a sweet orange, pine and spruce flavor that are pretty different from the trendier hop profiles on the market these days. Good stuff.
3.7 Draft at Stone Brewing Richmond. Poured an clear amber-orange color with a small white head. Aroma was notes of pine, citrus. Light malts. Flavor was smooth, with some grassy notes. Alcohol is pretty well masked. Citrus and some grassy bitterness dominate this one. A maltier and hoppier version of their IPA.
3.9 Draught at Arcadium. Bitter and grassy with some pine notes. Dark orange and hoppy.
3.3 Type: 22-oz. bottle Glass: Hawai‘i Bowl shaker pint glass From: Costco in Fashion Valley (San Diego), Calif. Price: $19.99 (for a variety 4-pack) Purchased: Oct. 20, 2016 Consumed: Oct. 20, 2016 Reviewed as: American Double / Imperial IPA Misc.: Bottled Aug. 17, 2016; 2016 release, 2001 label Had been wanting to pick up this Stone 20th Anniversary 4-pack and finally saw it for the first time at Costco for $19.99. Done. No idea about this one, but giving it a shot from scratch. Poured a copper amber clear color with two fingers of grayish frothy head. Nice steady stream of bubbles coming up from the bottom of the glass. Good uneven lacing. Decent retention. (Sight - 3.75) A lot of different flavors coming through the nose on the initial whiff. Got herbal, bitter pine, slightly spoiled fruit, citrus rind, onion, hints of resin and caramel. Can’t really pick out the hops, maybe Cascade if anything. No hiding that 8.50 pct. ABV. Doesn’t quite work overall. (Smell - 3.50) Taste followed the nose for the most part. Lots of different flavors coming in, but no real balance. Getting herbal, bitter sugary pine, earthy citrus rind, spoiled fruit, green onions, leafy vegetables, spoiled orange peel, hints of red grapefruit, maybe some red apple, caramel malts and light menthol. Very boozy. (Taste - 3.75) Medium body. Oily texture. Average carbonation. Earthy, bitter finish. (Feel - 3.50) Was back and forth on this one, eventually settling on a 3.75 for an overall score over a 3.50. Some good and bad here. I’m sure this was phenomenal in 2001, but it is not in 2016. (Overall - 3.75) 3.67 83 B
3.7 Bottle. Ruddy orange, quite active, nice firm top. There’s a bit of caramel in here, but there’s also an assertive pine-meets-fruit bitterness in the leading role. Quite nice. (#6392, 11/1/2016)
3.6 Beautiful clear dark amber with a white head. Quite bitter. Pretty standard these days I guess. But good.
3.5 On tap at the Red Cow North Loop. Pours a clear light orange with a tan head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has lots of bread, grain and grass with a bit of earthy bitter citrus backing. Flavor has bitter citrus and grass up front with a grain backbone.
3.8 A rich, burndt orange golden color. Strong hoppiness. Bitter and dry. Quality hops.
3.9 (Bottle) Clear orange body, small to medium, dissipating off-white head. Orange and pine aroma. Flavor of resin, orange, fruity, sweet artificial grape cough syrup, and wood; strong alcohol. Full bodied; very sticky mouthfeel.
4.2 22 ounce bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 8/17/2016. Pours crystal clear deep orange/light copper color with a 1-2 finger fairly dense and fluffy off white head with good retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of big grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, apricot, lemon/orange peel, citrus rind, pepper, pine, honey, light caramel, toasted biscuit, herbal, and floral/grassy earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of juicy citrus/pine hops and moderate bready malt sweetness; with great strength. Taste of huge grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, apricot, lemon/orange peel, citrus rind, pepper, pine, honey, light caramel, toasted biscuit, herbal, and floral/grassy earthiness. Moderate pine/citrus rind/spicy bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, apricot, lemon/orange rind, pepper, pine, honey, toasted biscuit, and herbal/floral/grassy earthiness on the finish for a while, Fantastic complexity, robustness, and balance of juicy citrus/pine hops and moderate bready malt sweetness; with a great malt/bitterness balance, and minimal lingering hop astringency after the finish. Light-moderate dryness from bitterness, increasing through the glass. Medium carbonation and medium-full body; with a very smooth, moderately sticky/resinous, and creamy/bready balanced mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a light warmth lingering after the finish. Overall this is an outstanding DIPA! All around awesome complexity, robustness, and balance of juicy citrus/pine hops and moderate bready malt sweetness; very smooth and easy to drink for the ABV. Very similar to Stone IPA as expected; but a bit more sweet/malty and fuller bodied. Still has the same sticky/resin dryness and drinkability of the regular beer, at the higher ABV. A highly enjoyable offering.
4.0 Clear golden pour with a thin, single finger head, lace present. Aroma of flowery hops, mostly pine and grapefruit. Full bodied. Taste is grapefruit and pine with a bitter finish. Hints of two row malt and a bit of caramel. Lingering grapefruit bitterness. A lot like Stone IPA, but way hoppier. Great beer.
3.7 Copper pour with nice sized white head. Good nose of citrus, with a flavor to match. Nice balance of malt that coats with caramel. Nice bitter ending.
3.2 Bomber. Grapefruit citrus hop aroma with notes of dank pine resiny hops. Pours amber colored with a large, soapy off white head that has excellent retention and a little bit of lacing. Starts with grapefruit hop citrus and acidity before dank resiny hops begin to take over. Finishes very dry and very bitter with astringent piney hop resin bitterness that lingers on the palate long after each sip. Not one of stone’s best IPAs.
2.4 Poured from a bottle. Orange-gold. Very cloudy. Very little head. Not much aroma. Very bitter taste. Pine and grapefruit. Not Stone's best IPA.
4.0 Powerful hop aroma with a sweet resin profile. Finish is bitter and bubbly.
3.4 Pours a finger of head on a hazy straw body. Aroma is pine resin, lemon and a bit of honey. Taste is super pine and grapefruit bitterness front beginning to end. Texture is crisp.
4.0 Pours a golden amber color with a white head. Citrus, floral, pine, dank hop and biscuit aroma. Mango, grapefruit, papaya, pine, floral, caramel, dank hop and biscuit flavors. Medium body and carbonation with a citrus, hop and pine finish. Very nice, better than the regular IPA and Ruination.
3.9 On tap at Elizabeth Station on Stone 20th Anniversary event. Pours a clear golden with a white head. Aroma is resin, peniey hops, some slight veggie notes. Taste is pretty the same with medium sweetness and piney bitterness levels. Good one.
4.2 Poured from the bottle of the 20th anniversary 4 pack pours clear orange, nice head and lacing. Sticky hops, citrus, strong, and easy drinking. I don’t even know what I was drinking in 2001 (I think Ice House), or what I thought was good (Also Ice House probably) but I would have been blown away by this. Happy Anniversary.
3.7 Always was curious to try this. Finally got an encore bottle. Clear amber, moderate head, decent lace/retention. Aroma is *very* similar to Stone’s regular IPA. That’s the best way to describe it, although this was slightly amped up and has a higher degree of bitterness. Pretty nice stuff.
4.2 Aromas of fresh mango, apricot, stonefruit, passion fruit, tangerine, grapefruit, tropical fruits, caramel, pines and bitter hops. Pours a gorgeous golden appearance with an almost non existent white foam. Taste brings incredibly fresh notes of tropical fruits, tangerine, mango, apricot, butterscotch, pineapple, candied caramel and guava upfront. Mellow to moderate bitterness rolls in alongside a sturdy malt base which offers grain malt, caramel, cracker and malt syrup notes. Finishes pleasantly refreshing with residual tropical fruit, tangerine, apricot, stonefruit and a slight metallic maltiness.. Overall, this is such a beautiful combination of hops in harmony with intensely refreshing fruit and citrus. A+ rating.
3.5 One dimensional but a solid bitter IPA. Not sweet at all. Not balanced. Thin fading head. Flavor is light honey mostly bitter. Wow stone you have come a long way.
3.5 651 ml. bottle. Bottled 08/17/16. Pours a medium, well retained, tiny bubbled, ivory head over a clear amber (SRM 7) body......nose is pine, resin, citrus, light allium from the hops, mild toasted malts with cracker, biscuit notes, balance to the hops.....taste is lightly floral sweet, with light toasted malts, pine, resin, melon, citrus, grass, allium from the hops, finishing with a moderate sharp hop bitterness, balance to the hops......mouth feel, medium sticky body, light alcohol, mild astringency, high carbonation. The hop backbone is a bit old in style, and has a variety of slightly muddled aromas and flavors. BJCP 7/3/13/4/6
3.5 On tap at World of Beer (Charlottesville, VA). Aromas of melon, grapefruit, orange, some pear, pine. Clear orange-amber with a fairly lasting white head. Pretty dry, balanced on the side of bitter, some tropical and citric fruity notes. Medium-full bodied.
4.1 Big sweet dank hoppy nose. Orange with large head. Smooth and slick, sticky feel, with some sweetness and alcohol showing in the flavor. Though not my favorite in the av line, I see why this would have gone over very well 15 years ago.
3.8 12 oz pour at High Craft Beer Market. Lots of citrus, grapefruit lemon orange. Tad caramel malt streak. Clean golden orange color,ok head and lace. Botter sweet flavor. Heavy bodybthick creamy mouthfeel, bitter sweet finish. Yup.
3.9 Pours a clear, dark copper, with mid-sized head. Aroma is floral, with hops and citrus elements. Flavor is very hoppy--bitter, with some citrus and pine flavors. This is a good ’un.
3.6 Draft. Pours orange with a white head. Fruity citric hops, light pithy notes, some sweet toffee malts, and mild-moderate lingering bitterness. Pretty good.
