Stone Grapefruit Slam IPA

Stone Grapefruit Slam IPA

We’ve made a hell of a lot of beers since 1996. Probably thousands at this point. Some stick around for decades, somefor a few years and some are brief visits, gracing us with their hoppy presence for a short time before becoming fond memories. Occasionally stars, planets and brewing schedules align and we bring back one of these ephemeral creations. In fall of 2014 we created a draft-only version of this delicious double India pale ale. Its bitter, zesty grapefruit peel infusion created a bright accent to flavors of pine resin and fresh citrus well in advance of the explosionof fruited beers we’re all reveling in atthe moment. We never stopped thinking about it, so a long five years later, we’re bringing back Stone Grapefruit Slam IPA for round two. It’s a link to the past planted delightfully in the present.

4.1 This one pours up a very attractive orange, golden color with a retained off white head. Aroma is very powerful with piney grapefruit notes. Taste is extremely bitter somewhat akin to drinking grapefruit juice. This is super delicious beer, IMO.
4.0 22-03-19 // on tap at Stone Brewing World Bistro & Gardens - his is the new 2019 version and not the Stochasticity Project anymore. Unlcear dark orange, glowing. White head. Fruit hop nose, citrus. Malty backbone. Very dry, dry citrus and grapefruit notes. Bitter. Smacking.
3.9 Darker gold pour with some white foam on the top. Relatively clear. Nose has some hop marmalade, pink grapefruit pulp with its zesty bitterness, crisp. Taste has good citrus, sweet and creamy. Fruity pink grapefruit IPA. good grapefruit peel bitter linger in the finish. Tasty, drinks easier than its abv would foretell.
4.0 22 oz Bottle from the Stone in Richmond, VA The ale poured a clear amber color with a white foamy head and lacing. The ale has a wonderful hop aroma of grapefruit and other tropical fruits. Your nose also detects some pine resin as well. The taste has more citrus fruit, orange, and lemons. Grapefruit dominates the ale. This is a joy to drink while watching the NCAA basketball tourney. The finish is dry with hints of pine resin after each swallow. This was purchased prior to visiting the Irish Festival on Broad St.
3.5 12 oz can courtesy of MK. Pours a clearish golden orange colour with smallish white head. Aroma is big pink grapefruit, grapefruit zest and caramel. Flavour has loads of zesty grapefruit and grapefruit juice with some caramel. Average body. Nice.
3.9 Copper color with a thin white head. Aroma of grapefruit (big surprise) and slight amount of toasted malt. Really easy drinking for the ABV. Slight caramel malt note on the palate. More citrus peel on the plate. Nice.
3.5 On tap at ABV Public House in Hillsboro, OR. Clear orange pour with a small white head and random white residue on the glass. Big grapefruit citrus aroma. Taste is citrus, unsweetened grapefruit, and appropriately bitter. Medium mouthfeel and wonderful oiliness. A little bitter for my palate, but wonderfully made, nonetheless.
3.2 The Aromas are pine resin and a little grapefruit hops with some pale malt. Flavors are like nose slightly more bitter than sweet Nothing remarkable. Good carbonation and okay body. Drinkable but I wouldn't seek it out.
4.0 Can marked at 8%. Very nicely balanced, the grapefruit adds just enough flavor to work with the hoppy bitterness and keep it from being too dry.
3.8 12 oz. can. Canned 01/07/19. Enjoy by 05/07/19. Pours a medium, well retained ivory head, with layered lacing, over a slightly hazy amber (SRM 9) body.....nose is grapefruit, with peel tones, mild toasted malts.....taste is slightly sweet with grapefruit and grapefruit peel, mild toasted malts, finishing with moderate hop bitterness.....mouth feel, medium body, moderate alcohol, moderate carbonation. This is a lovely variation within the I/DIPA style and is utterly drinkable and delicious. BJCP 9/3/14/6/7
3.5 No doubting the grapefruit; huge amount of citrus on the nose, while the taste aims for a straightforward West Coast IPA with a strong grapefruit bitterness on the finish. Caramel and pine form the base, orange and mild mango-papaya notes on the periphery, but this is a well-made grapefruit beer through-and-through. If only I liked grapefruit...
4.1 A cloudy orange appearance with a white head. The aroma contains grapefruit, lemons, and pine. The flavor is quite bitter with a lot of citrus and pine showing up. A bit of sourness is also present. Overall no shock that Stone knows IPAs and this is a good one!
3.7 Pours hazy orange with a one finger head. It smells of hops and of course plenty of grapefruit. The flavor is full of hops with ample grapefruit and some resin along with a pretty solid malt backing. Full disclosure: I don't even like grapefruit. I still enjoy IPAs with some grapefruit notes from the hops, but eating a grapefruit or drinking a grapefruit radler as I did once? Yuck. So that makes me perhaps not enjoy this quite as much as most of Stone's superb IIPAs, but it's still very good.
4.0 Big grapefruit on the nose. Somewhere between orange and ruby red in the color. I remember the 1st time this came out the only bottle I found was past its best by date so I passed, so I'm happy it got rereleased. Bitter grapefruit rind. Some sweet grapefruit juice. I've been kinda burnt out on IPA's but I really enjoyed this one. For me Stone makes the best IPA's and this reminds me why I use to love the style so much. Alcohol is very well hidden.
3.7 On tap at Kings Beer & Wine. Golden with a small white head. Fresh with hops, resin, grapefruit and some caramel. Medium body and bitterness.
3.7 2019 can release. Pours a clear golden orange with a thin white head. Crisp hoppy citrus aroma. Smooth and lightly syrupy with a bold pink grapefruit taste. Bitter citrus rind flavor lingers on the tongue but is not harsh or unpleasant. Finishes smooth with no harshness on the throat. Has a long lingering grapefruit aftertaste. Pretty enjoyable
3.8 2019 can Grapefruit Slam release from Craft Brewed. Pours a clear orange-gold with a full finger and half of foam that lingers. Pungent ruby red grapefruit aromas with light caramel, pine, lemon zest and pithy grapefruit as it warms. Ruby red grapefruit flesh and juice on the palate with more pithy bitterness as it moves toward the finish. Some toasted caramel notes, but the grapefruit is the star. More grapefruit zest, juice and pith on the finish with some light caramel. Solid grapefruit IPA.
3.5 12 ounce can. Pours a murky gold with an average white head. Aroma of citrus and tropical fruits. Taste is grapefruit, lemon, pineapple, floral, and some malt. Pretty good.
3.9 6 January 2022, bottle from 12 Days of IPA. Orange gold pour with a white head and light lacing. Hoppy Citrus aroma with a resinous grapefruit taste that is moderately bitter. Strong. Rating 3.9. 28 January 2019, Bottle that poured a dark golden color with a white head that was maintained by a steady stream of carbonation bubbles. The aroma was grapefruit with a resinous taste. The bitterness level was elevated. Rating 3.5.
3.9 22oz bottle: Hiding in the back of the fridge. This one pours a clear golden color. Minimal head and no lacing. Grapefruit and lemony nose. The taste is good. Grapefruit and lemon hop flavors with a fair amount of bitterness. Good malt body, but any residual sweetness is masked by the hops. Very nice. Hopefully they will brew it again!
3.9 March 21, 2014 - with blankboy, gregclow, mabel and jercraigs - bomber. Clear bubbly gold with a frothy off-white head. Aroma is sweet grapefruit, alcohol and quite a lot of floral bitterness - simple but appealing. Taste follows, but moreso - very nice! Average body, astringent, decent carbonation - somewhat quick finish, a little pith to coat the palate, but it never really builds - solid stuff, fairly easy-drinking too.
3.8 Tap at GABF. Pours a clear orange gold with medium off white head leaving sticky lacing. The aroma is strong grapefruit pith, grass, pine. Medium body, grapefruit, dank, pine, lingering bitterness, very good.
3.8 22oz bottle pours out a orangish amber topped with a sand head. Nose is nice grapefruit citrus hops kick along with some nice bread malts. Taste is more of the grapefruit citrus and a well balanced malt.
4.3 Poured from the bomber, chunky orange. This one is tropical, citrus, resin, peel, tasty, and nice and potent. I think this project was a success, and there should be more projects like this in the works everyday.
3.9 Pours very murky with a off white head with good lace. Taste of Grapefruit, candy sweetness, malt and some bitterness in there as well. They play off each other very well.
3.9 Pours a golden amber color with big fizzy head. Aromas of fruity hops and some citrusnotes. Flavors of tropical fruits and some citrus hops, malts with a spicy finish.
3.6 Rated on 7-30-2015 (Bottled 01/22/2014) The appearance of this beer is a medium sized white head that mostly diminished, transparent yellow body, slow rising carbonation, and a fair amount of lacing. The aroma presents citrus hops, grapefruit, tropical fruit, and malt. The flavor is moderate bitterness, citrus hops, grapefruit and malt. The mouthfeel is moderate carbonation and this is a light-medium bodied beer. A very good brewed beer with a good flavor that is worth trying.
3.4 I love the look of this brew, the flavor I’m not so sure about. It has a lot of citrus and a strange fruit flavor. It has a big alcohol presence with a nice burn.
3.8 This bottled brew from a bottle shop poured a medium sized head of foamy fine to medium sized white colored bubbles that were mostly diminishing and left behind a strongly carbonated very hazy dark orange brown colored body and a fair lacing. The mild aroma was citrus and hoppy. The sharp mouth feel was tingly at the start and at the finish with a bitter hoppy aftertaste. The strong flavor contained notes of citrus and hops. A decent one that I would consider drinking again.
