Stone Pataskala Red X IPA

Stone Pataskala Red X IPA

A Massively Dry-Hopped Deep Crimson IPA

Pat-ASK-ala? Pata-SKALA? Pa-TASK-a-la? While those in the know favor the third pronunciation, no matter how you say it, this is a unique red IPA. The beer was first brewed in September 2015 to support music and arts education programs in Pataskala, Ohio, where Stone co-founder Greg Koch grew up. People there loved it, so we added the beer to our seasonal lineup, and the Pataskala name stuck. The crimson hue is courtesy of a special German malt variety by BESTMALZ® called Red X. Appearances, however, only tell so much. Heavily dry-hopped with Mosaic, Cascade and Amarillo hops, the beer is incredibly citrus-forward, rounded out with notes of biscuit and toffee from the malt bill. The result is evocative of red IPAs yet different. And as luck — or perhaps skill is more the appropriate word, to give our brewing team their due — would have it, it’s quite wonderful. We think you’ll find this unusual red IPA to be quite deliciously satisfying, no matter how you choose to pronounce it.

3.6 This brew was purchased in a Stone Brewing 12 pack sampler and unknown to me until I opened the first one this evening. The pour shows an unusual brownish red liquid and a decent light tan top. The nose is really inviting with caramel, dough and a touch of pine. The taste is then less than the scent but still a unique take from your typical IPA. I get spruce, biscuit and a moderate hop kick. Mosaic hops are a particular favorite but they seem somewhat covered up here. It finishes with lemon and a long lasting bitterness, nice. I would drink again, will drink again. Stone still pushes the envelope.
3.4 Sampled from the tap at the San Diego Airport location. Pours a deep red with a slight amber hue and a yellowish brown head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has notes of caramel, grain and grass with some resin underlying. Flavor has a good amount of grain, toffee and grapefruit with some resin underlying.
3.5 Great color, head.. smell is hoppy, but fairly simple. Taste is hops, bread, malt. Good
3.5 Hm not sure I’d call this an IPA persay; it’s more of a cross between an amber and an IPA. The sweet toffee/caramel presence from the malt is much stronger than what you’d expect in an IPA but there is certainly some hop punch, especially in the nose and at the end with some bitterness. The body was a tad lighter than I’d prefer. Pours a dark ruby color with a frothy khaki-colored head. Overall it’s an interesting beer and pretty good
3.9 Sample at True Bearing Alehouse, Xiamen. Draft in a cab brought back from a bar in Taiwan. Pours clear red amber with a thin white head. Aroma of malt and pine with caramel and hops. More an amber ale than an IPA? Bittersweet finish. Nice but certainly a lot going on.
3.5 Amber/Red with decent head and smells of citrus and pine and something else that I am not sure how to describe. Taste is a hop combo that just battles each other, citrus, spice, pine, etc. Then there is a caramel malt flavor that seems to add more confusion to the mix. While not bad it is just too much going on to really be great.
3.8 Raspberry, syrup and citrus aroma. Super dark red pour from 12oz bottle at home. Off white head. Tangy, hoppy, dank fruit, Malts and bitter. Very good, comes together nice
3.7 Bottle. Clear red/amber with a tall, off-white head. Nutty, caramel aroma. The flavor is well balanced, lightly bitter with plenty of malt base. A good amber ale but I wouldn’t call it n IPA; just too malty.
3.4 Tap. Pours clear amber with an off-white head that leaves a little lacing. Aroma and flavour are citrus, pine, and caramel - with a bitter finish.
2.2 Presented from draft in a nonic glass, where it appears a deep amber with one finger of beige head. The aroma consists of typical pine-fruit (pine and grapefruit). The pine-fruit barrage continues into the palate. I’m sure there are some caramel malts in this beer, but it’s hard to tell beyond the abrasive hop bitterness. Nope, not again, very unbalanced.
3.4 Reddish brown pour. Some caramel but not as much as in many reds. Bitter citrus and pine.
3.7 Pours dark cloudy amber, has a medium off white head. Aroma is sweet caramel malt, citrus and pine hops. Taste has a good amount of caramel malt sweetness thats well balanced by the incoming citrus pine hops bitterness. A medium body with good sweet bitter balance. Finish is good caramel malt sweetness with orange citrus pine hops bitterness. A brew with a good caramel malt backbone followed by good balanced hops. A good drinking tasty brew.
3.6 Better than average red. Balanced. Sweet caramel malt, pine and citrus hops. Semi-bitter finish to soften the malt sweetness. Im not a fan of red ales but this is pretty good.
3.1 Bottle @ home. Early 2000s style IPA. Lots of caramel sweetness to go with harsh piney bitterness. The hops have some flavorful notes like grapefruit, citrus, and light resin. Not incredibly hard to drink but also exactly what Im not looking for in an IPA.
3.8 On tap at Mission Creek. Pours a clear ruby tinged amber with a medium sized yellowed white head. Soft malt and a touch of toast on the nose. Dusty hops. Medium bodied, nice sweet red grapefruit flavor coming through here. Sweet malt picks up some fruit notes as it moves into a slow and faintly lingering grapefruit bitterness. Quite subtle and delicate. Nice change of pace from Stone. Very tasty.
4.2 This was a nice solid beer. Picked it up in a mixed 12pk. This beer has all the characteristics
3.5 Non pale pale ale. Bright ruby red. Crisp toffee, caremel malt flavor. Good hop balance. Booze in the finish.
3.7 12 fl oz bottle. Pours pink brown. Grapefruit, orange, pine, biscuit, caramel, little heat, pepper. Nice.
3.6 Draft at Stone Escondido. Pours bright amber with a creamy beige head. Tastes like juicy citrus, some caramel and toffee malt, orange, and toast. Light/medium body and carbonation. Smells like caramel and toffee malt, citrus hops, orange, and toast.
3.7 33 cl bottle from Ale and Lager kuala lumpur. Pours copper reddish with big head. Fruity caramel aroma with malty caramel and hoppy tropical taste.
2.9 Clear umber color with a diminished light tan head with decent lace. Cedar planked orange slices, a common scent in darker IPAs that just doesn’t work for me. Big grainy flavors. All grain flavors. Flavors of grain. Did I mention this has some grain flavors. With all the flavors of grain, I start to think about under attenuated brews. I’m starting to wonder if dry hopping brings out the grain flavors in darker IPAs. Still not a fan, but I have something to think about with future IPAs with more dark malts.
3.9 Keg at The Grove, Huddersfield. A clear amber colour with a medium beige head. Aroma of pine, a hint of grapefruit, caramel, some spicy rye, slight red berries, a little toasted malts and subtle grassy, herbal hops. Taste of caramel, rye, resin, some grapefruit, slight orange, a hint of red berries and subtle grassy, herbal hops. Medium bodied and moderate carbonation. A dryish, spicy rye, grassy hop bitterness in the finish. Malty and sweet to begin but the spicy rye, citrus, resin and American hops kick in. Very good.
3.2 Draught at Kungstorgets Brygghus on May 6, 2017. Murky brown color, tan head with lacing. Malty, hoppy, bitter taste. Bitter, frity aftertaste. Some warming alcohol. Medium and fizzy mouthfeel, medium bitterness. Malty, fruity, tobacco scent.
3.6 12 oz bottle. Pours a mostly clear reddish copper color and topped by a small off white head of foam that settles quickly to a thin film. The aroma shows notes of citrus fruit, grapefruit, floral notes, pine resin, and sweet and toasted caramel malts as the base. The flavor follows and shows more of the grapefruit citrus, pine resin, and floral notes to go with the toasted caramel and biscuit malt sweetness while the citrus hops add ample bitterness to the back end. Nice balance between the sweet malts and bitterness from the hops. Medium bodied with balanced carbonation that leads to a bitter sweet citrus finish with toasted caramel lingering. Solid and easy drinking red ale.
4.0 From tap at CBF Wien, Pours cleae dark amber liquid, almost no head, Aroma: hopy, hop pellets, pine, grapefruit, caramel, Taste: light to medium sweet, heavy bitter, light sour, caramel, hopy, pine, grapefruit, Palate: light body, average carbonation, slick mouthfeel, long bitter caramel aftertaste, Overall: very good, simple, enjoyed.
3.8 alas, i am a sucker for any Red ale and this Red IPA is not exception. Smells nice and floral and piney and pours a dank cloudy red. The flavor is a strong nice balance of malty roundness and hoppy bitterness. Like a pike of rocks stacked atop another, the balance is maintained delicately and precisely. Another very good beer from Stone. Good for wrapping some delicious dinner with your robe wearing angel of magic and mystery.
4.0 deep red color; piney hop aroma with bready malt; a well balanced IPA; piney hops and bready, toasted malt; medium bodied; dry, bitter, bready finish
3.5 Hazy, deep amber/red. Full body, flavorful, assertive, hot and rich mouthfeel, lingering aftertaste. Very bitter, even more because of dryness but caramel notes minimize it. Extra hoppy, herbal, malty, caramel. Big personality, very enjoyable.
3.5 Clear red with a thick, lasting foam. Nice aroma of pine and resin, but not very strong. Flavor is a rich malty caramel with papaya and grapefruit notes in the finish. Not really bitter either.
