Stone R & R Coconut IPA

Stone R & R Coconut IPA

This collaboration beer is a celebration of the homebrewing spirit and an example of counter-intuitive thoughts coalescing beautifully into something exceptional. Case in point is the seamless marrying of toasted coconut and a hop bill brimming with tropical fruit notes. Longtime homebrewers Robert Masterson and Ryan Reschan teamed up to enter this beer in our annual American Homebrewers Association-sanctioned brewing competition and, though it was the first beer they’d ever brewed together, they sailed past the competition like a tropical ocean breeze on a pleasure cruise bound for India. After winning, the duo reached out to their friend, highly decorated homebrewer and 2011 AHA Ninkasi Award winner Paul Sangster of the newly opened Rip Current Brewing Company, to assist in dialing in the recipe. Together with Sangster’s skilled partner Guy Shobe and Stone Brewmaster Mitch Steele, Masterson and Reschan present fellow craft beer enthusiasts with a most delicious and original style of IPA. Open, enjoy, rest, relax and repeat as needed.

2.9 Decent IPA I guess, but I've had two bottles and never even got a hint of coconut in the aroma or taste in either one. Tried at all temperature ranges and nothing helped. Since there is no coconut, Stone makes other IPAs that are better, so I won't be going back to this one.
4.0 Pours a nice clear golden color with light white head. Coconut, citrus, pine, and grass on the nose; follows onto the palate. Coconut hangs on and finishes out nicely.
2.9 Pours a clear yellow with a thin white head. Aroma is citrus, but no coconut. Coconut is also missing from the flavor. Very little citrus taste, and the finish is a large dose of dry bitterness that leaves an unpleasant aftertaste. Not only is the lack of coconut disappointing, but the beer isn’t great either.
3.6 This presents an oily, cloudy dark yellow body under a white head. Fruity hop aroma and light coconut. The flavor is bitter. it’s first and foremost; the coconut aspect is way in the back. Could be a little less bitter.
3.6 Pour is transparent t golden Amber with a tight creamy head. Nose is aggressively bitter, citrus and grapefruit with some bready malt. Taste follows suit, a little less bitter and sweet, cleaner hop profile. Medium body and assertive carb, dry finish.
3.9 Bottle. Moderate malt aroma of roasted grain, moderate to heavy pine and grapefruit peel for the hops, light soap for the yeast, with coriander, and yes I can pick up the coconut. Head is large, fizzy/frothy, white with good lacing and is mostly lasting. Color is hazy, medium amber/orange. Flavor starts lightly sweet and faintly acidic, then finishes lightly sweet and moderately bitter. Palate is medium, oily with a carbonation between soft and lively. Smooth and well textured, this IPA has the right hop bite in the flavor though the flavor is a touch weak.
3.3 Very hazy copper and bronzed coloured body with a rich, three centimetre tall tan head - easily one of the best looking Stone beers I’ve seen in a while. Aroma of good grassy and herbal hops, pungent malt and alcohol - rubbing alcohol, in fact - no coconuts or fruit. Full-bodied; Deep bittering hops with grassy, piney and very grapefruity characteristics, all with a good malt balance and some deeply bittering touches at the end. Aftertaste shows more hops, some grapefruit and pine bitterness, some alcohol and a deep bite - which is nice, although completely one-dimensional. Overall, a pungent beer with no coconut flavour, no complexity and pure bitterness which may or may not be solely from the hops. I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased from Brown Jug (Spenard) in Anchorage, Alaska on 04-October-2013 for US$7.99 sampled at home in Washington on 03-February-2014.
3.7 Bomber purchased at the brewery. Pours a hazy amber hue with two fingers of frothy foam. AROMA of zesty grapefruit, some stone/tropical fruits, but only the tiniest hint of toasted coconut (bummer). FLAVOR of bitter grapefruit, pine resin, some tropical fruit (perhaps mango), with a bit of toasted coconut (more so than in the nose, but still weak). Finishes with some typical Stone IPA type of bitterness. Although this has been out for six months already, I waited to rate this bottle as I was hoping the coconut might come out more with some time (and fading hops). I actually had this on tap a few times when it came out and remember really liking the tropical fruit elements in the nose and flavor. Unfortunately, the tropical notes seem to have diminished somewhat in this slightly aged bottle version. But the real disappointment for me (as a big lover of coconut) is the nearly complete lack of coconut, both in the fresh draft version as well as this semi-aged bottle version. I am sure it is hard to get from a homebrew version of this beer to Stone’s huge production level while keeping the coconut presence where it should be. But this is the second case of Stone’s false advertising when it comes to coconut -- the Ken Schmidt "Aloha Plenty" collaboration from years back similarly promised coconut that ended up being hard to detect. I should just lower my expectations when Stone decides to make another beer with coconut in it. (426, 837)
3.8 It’s ok. Coconut smell comes through with the hops...kinda fun. Taste pretty thick a coconut still there. Do not know if I could drink a lot of it. But worth a try.
3.8 Nice variation on the theme. Would not have thought that coconut would go so well with a normal west coast IPA, but it does. Not a huge fake coconut flavor from this one, just a hint and a hint is enough. Some exotic fruit notes and the traditional Stone citrusy grapefruit hops as usual.
4.0 Bomber from Smiths and Capone’s. Poured hazy dark straw with off-white head. Nose was heavy piney hops, caramel malt, lactic, tropical fruit. I did not get coconut in the nose. Tasted piney and hoppy, with a spare caramel malt bill, some lactic creaminess, and a complex finish.
3.7 22 oz bottle. The pour is a nice gold with some deep ruby hues. The head was monstrous and white, slowly dissolving down to a film, leaving beautifully clingy lace all around. The aroma is quite hoppy. There is a nice sweetness to it, but there isn't really any good fruitiness or coconut. Kind of plain. The flavor is typical light IPA. There is a little bit of a grassy note at the end, which I've had in other coconut beers. Not the best flavor for whatnot could be, but other than that, the mouth feel is pretty solid and the aftertaste lingers nicely albeit not quite the best thing.
4.0 750 ml bottle. Pours a clear pale golden with a resilient white head. Aroma is roasty, floral and hoppy. Flavor is oranges, mangoes, citrus and all sorts of fruits. Finish is very hoppy: herbal, lots of citrus, especially lime. Some coconut. Lingering fruity, hoppy bitterness. Medium body, soft mouthfeel, weak to average carbonation. Pretty solid.
3.6 bottle rated on 8/30/13 - This copper-amber brew has a lingering off-white head and a nice grapefruit aroma. The flavor is high on the bitterness as expected. There’s some citrus right away and a little coconut as it warms. It’s medium to full bodied with a bitter hop finish. Is it good? Certainly. For a "coconut" beer it could use more coconut though.
3.2 Bottle. Clear dark golden color with ivory head. Dank hop, pale malt, coconut aromas. Medium body with soft carbonation. Lightly sweet pale malt flavors with some dank earthy hoppage--not any coconut in the flavor___ not bad tho
3.8 What an awesome, yet odd, yet totally awesome idea. Lots of tropical hops all over, with tiny tiny hints of coconut meat in the mid-palate and towards the finish. Many have mentioned no coconut. I found this hiding in the sides of my mouth, a slight hint on the nose, and very faintly underneath the hops in the finish. Definitely could’ve been more, but was noticeable.
2.9 Bottled sample via and shared with oakbluff. Pale orange in colour with medium carbonation. Aromas are of white grapefruit, pale and caramel malts, and sesame seeds. Flavors are of tired sweet orange and grapefruit, along with more heavy pale malt and toast, and maybe a bit of coconut meat? A bit heavy on the palate. A bit stale, although not all that old.
2.0 Kind of odd but not unpleasant...first sip tasted more like tea than beer. Not much coconut flavor to be found. As you were.
3.5 Looked, smelled and tasted good enough for an IPA. But as many others have said, there is no discernible presence of coconut at all. Kind of disappointing when you go into it expecting some coconut aroma or taste.
3.2 Draft. Aroma is a real piney hop. Appearance is a cloudy gold with a creamy head. Taste taste is hoppy tat is followed by a sweet earthiness, followed by a fresh, skunky hop flavor. Palate is a muted hops. Overall, a decent beer.
3.8 Very enjoyable IPA with a bit of pine and definite juicy citrus notes. However, didn’t really pick up on the coconut.
4.0 [My bottle (660ml) shared with HogTownHarry, GregClow, jercraigs & mabel] Pours a deep orange with an average size semi-lasting frothy off-white head. Aroma of resiny hops mainly along with some tropical fruit and biscuity malt -- I don’t get any coconut in the aroma. Flavour, again of resiny hops and tropical fruit but I do get a hint of coconut and the finish is long and bitter. Medium bodied. Coconut or not, this is a fantastic IPA.
4.0 Pours hazy gold with white head. Aroma is heavy on the malt side. Rich caramel malt with a litte bit of a dark roasty taste, maybe from the coconut burning? Great malt profile. On the hop side it is a little bit of tropical fruit and grass mostly. Medium body, fairly easy to drink. As it warms up alot more flavors start to come out including some slight coconut and alot more tropical fruit from the hops. Pretty good and a little different than the usual.
3.5 Small tasting from a 22 oz bottle a few nights ago. A solid IPA but there was no coconut in the aroma and flavor.
4.0 Not sure about coconut, but this is a very nice IPA nose dominated by tropical floral hop notes. Taste quite bitter with bready smooth maltiness and apricot-floral hop finish.
3.4 Pours goldish colored? i don’t know, it was dark. no coconut in the nose which is all i was looking for. taste...no coconut again. wtf good is a coconut ipa that doesn’t smell, taste or have a coconut in it? fine beer but no coconut in this so up yours.
3.1 I’m not really sure I’m getting much coconut here. Malt nose with a deep copper orange color. No lacing. Taste is bready, sweet and malty. Disappointed overall.
3.9 Pours fairly clear golden / orange with a white head. The aroma has grapefruit, pine, mild earth, dry caramel malt, hints of coconut and a bit of sweetness. It has a medium / full smooth body that has a bit of roughness and prickly assertive carbonation. The flavor start with dry grapefruit, earth/pine, coconut in back, but more presence than the aroma. There is a dry malt in there as well. The finish is dry and hoppy with lots of pine and grapefruit. Nice balance with the coconut richness. Really nicely done.
3.8 Pour is clear and medium amber in color large white head. Hops and cream with a touch of coconut. The hops rule with lite coconut and citrus notes that make in one of a kind.
3.5 (tap) clear orange amber colour with a small white head; aromas of coconut, fruit; balanced flavour with some coconut; not bad
