Stone / Sierra Nevada NxS IPA

Stone / Sierra Nevada NxS IPA

For many, California is considered an epicenter for brewing innovation, particularly where hoppy IPAs are concerned. We teamed up with longtime craft compatriots and mutual hop admirers Sierra Nevada to create a truly one-of-a-kind IPA. This special-edition beer conveys the true character of collaboration with touches of inventiveness and creativity. Two batches of an IPA were brewed and expertly blended to craft this multilayered beer. The first batch was split down the middle, with 50% being aged in gin-infused bourbon barrels and the remaining half aged in rye whiskey barrels. These beers were blended with the fresh second batch of IPA, which was generously dry-hopped to impart rich aromas to accompany the citrusy, piney, woody, herbaceous flavors achieved from this truly one-of-a-kind collaboration.

4.2 Smak och doft av humle, citrus, grapefrukt, mango med toner av ek. Stor sötma, fin beska med smak av tallbarr. Mycket gott!
3.6 (bottle - 22 oz) Dark gold with a fizzy white head. Zesty hop aroma with hints of pine and grapefruit. No notes of the barrel. Tangy and zesty citrus hops at the start of the flavor with a bitter and lingering middle and a tangy and bitter finish. Didn’t get much barrel notes but a good IPA.
3.8 Bomber pours a semi-hazy orange/golden with a huge off-white head. Aroma of dusty muted hops and dry malt. Gin botanicals hit first but are quickly met and balanced with piney hops, hops become earthy leading into wood and light rye character, finishing with a musky bitterness. Very well balanced flowing flavors, interesting and nicely done.
3.8 25 oz bottle from Greene’s in Columbia, SC. The ale poured a clear light Amber color. The head was frothy and white with excellent lacing. The aroma was a mix of orange pith, pine resin and toasted bread. Nice IPA with a complex experience of basic bitter IPA with a gin and bourbon chaser. The gin and bourbon are feint but detectable. The medium body ale has average carbonation. It is an easy drinking ale with bitterness in the back of your mouth.
4.0 (Backlog) Bottle pour at home, there isn’t much special about this beer, hops citrus, fruit, some bit and a overall easy drinking beer. And I think that that is why I love it so much, 2 of the best ipa brewers in CA making a very solid IPA.
4.1 Bottle from Beer Gonzo, Coventry. Aromas of orange, candied fruit, lemon peel, herbal, sweet botanical. Taste is strong lemon, lime, orange, tropical fruits, herbal, some spice, and slightly bitter finish. Tasty.
3.7 Pours a nice gold with a frothy white head that fades fast. Strong aroma of peach and pine with an earthiness to it. Flavour is heavy hops with hints of the gin and rye coming through. Strong flavour and overall a fine beer!
3.7 Pours copper with a thin foamy head. The aroma is peaches, pine and a biscuity malt. A gin soaked hoppiness smack in the face. It’s unlike any IPA I’ve had before, I like it.
4.1 A beautiful beer, golden amber with a strong off white head. I would describe the aroma as a toasty resin, pine. Nice landing on the tongue, medium bodied and well balanced...hops, mild citrus, oak. Not as boozy as others mention. Great collaboration.
4.1 Flaska från SBs beställningssortiment. Bottled nov-15. En stor IPA med massor av citrus men även lite tropisk frukt, persika och tallskott, I mellanregistret märks en lätt fatton med lite ek och vanilj. Bra bett i beskan. Perfekt balanserad, rena fina smaker. Riktigt gott trots att den inte var helt färsk.
4.3 Golden color with a thick white head. Aroma is hoppy with a hint of botanicals, specifically juniper. Flavor is hoppy up front with an interesting mix of sweetness from the rye barrels and a bite of juniper in the finish. It’s really interesting, but strangely drinkable.
3.8 [My bottle (660ml) shared with GregClow, jercraigs & mabel] Pours a deep orange-copper with an average size semi-lasting frothy white head. Nice aroma is fruity and hoppy, resiny and herbal, a touch alcoholic and finally, some bready malt in the back. Flavour is fruity and hoppy along with some rye and a big bitter finish. Almost no sign this is barrel-aged. Alcohol in the flavour is fairly well hidden. Medium bodied. I liked it a lot.
3.4 Malty, grassy scent. Golden amber color with light head. Bitter in overall but finishing with light malty sweetness. Strong carb.
3.6 2016-02-26. Crisp orange body with a modest beige head and lace. 3+ Aroma is modest, light alcohol and moderate hop greenery. Flavour has mild caramel touches, fairly bitter throughout. Hints of juniper/herbal notes when I go back and look for it. Average plus bodied palate, good carbonation. 3+ Solid, enjoyable. I am not getting much of an impression from the barrels? Possibly to its benefit. 7/4/7/3/15 Bottle shared by Blankboy.
4.0 (650ml bottle via Systembolaget private order, bottled Nov 22/15) Pours clear amber with a moderate head of white froth leaving gorgeous lace. Aroma of pine, grapefruit, lemon-lime, gin botanicals, wood, some caramel and light pit fruit to the core. Flavour is a mix of grapefruit, lime, pine needles, pineapple sweetish caramel, oak, slight vanilla, gin botanicals, rye, leafy oily hops with a medicinal character. The sweetness is really dried down on the finish by oak, gin, a little whiskey and significant bittering hops. Sensation of alcohol, but more spirit character I think. Moderate body and carbonation. Definitely a different beast and the faded nature of this bottle means dry hop is reduced and barreling comes to the fore. Is that better? Don’t know, but ti definitely makes it distinctive.
3.9 Little heavy for me overall. Hoppy, moderate carbonation. Strong alcohol taste.
3.6 It’s got a bright orangish body with amber highlights. An inch-thick head that dissipates fairly quickly.Smells wonderful. Cirusy. Bright. Fresh. Lemony. Newly-mown lawn with clean yeastiness.. There is notes of exotic floral scent. I guess that’s the effect of barrel-aging. On the taste buds, I get cereal, rye, sweetness, toffee-like taste at the front. Tropical fruit and floral. The mouthfeel is fairly light. Not too heavy. It’s well-carbonated. Some said this is too boozy and I get it. Don’t mind it much though.
4.1 The delicate aroma of citrus, pine and orange gives a hint of the taste. Very flattering and mild. The bitterness is just right amount with a mild finish. Medium carbonation. Drinkable yet having some character.
4.5 The aroma of citrus fruit. Sweet. Golden Amber color. Medium carbonation. Nice bitter finish.
3.3 Poured bomber into Teku. Nice west coast hop aroma. Golden orange with thin white head. You can definitely feel the alcohol and the bitterness from it. Drinks like a hard liquor with a similar aftertaste.
3.9 Bottle shared at the Canary wharf tasting 16/02/2016. Bottle picked up at bottle barn santa rose. Clear golden orange coloured pour with a lasting white head. Aroma is juicy lemon and pine, little caramel, light grassy. Flavour is composed of sweet and sticky hop juice, pineapple, sticky hop, pine needle, slight bitter lemon. Aggressive clean punchy bitterness. Palate is medium sweet, highish carbonation, sticky resinous pine. Good stuff.
3.8 Pours clear orange amber with low white head. Aroma of pine, citrus and grapefruit, light peach and gooseberry. Taste is resinous medium bitter with a mild fruity finish. Light and smooth body with soft carbonation. Some alcohol in the finish.
4.8 650 ml. bottle sampled @ Yarric’s house warming. Thank you! Bottled on 11.22.15. I love BA IPA’s and this one marries really well the taste of a good USA hop / IPA profile with complimentary delicious barrel notes, lots of sweet vanilla oak. Pours a near clear orange with a creamy white. Nose is not that special, lots of oily grapefruit hops, feels slightly muted. Taste is gorgeous, low bitter very fruity grapefruit hops leading quickly the way to sweet vanilla barrel, lots of delicious sweet barrel, sweet American oak, some citrus presumably gin flourishes, oily hops. Goes really well. Lightly oily body. Gorgeous, shows and proves the lasting qualities of these 2 breweries especially Stone for me. Lots of beer geeks might complain about Stone but for me they continue to change, adapt & release wonderful beers. Easily one of America’s best breweries.
4.3 Wow, pretty amazing IPA. From a bottle, the aroma has pine and some gin influence. There are slight blasts of alcohol when drinking it, there is a good marmalade taste, with is closed away by the hop and gin bitterness.
4.0 Orange pour from draft at Timmy OTooles. White head. Huge tropical fruit aroma. Pineapple and tangy fruity delicious taste. Love.
4.1 Draught > Flying Saucer. Well, for starters this smells amazingly fresh. Dry palate which I dig. Too boozy w/ an alcohol flavor bite. I don’t love it but I don’t hate it either. Don’t know if I’d order it again though. My rating will be inflated unnecessarily high for the aroma and palate.
4.0 16th February 2016 Level 42 Tasting. Big thanks to Fergus for hauling this one back. Almost clear gold beer, small pale cream colour head. Palate is light, smooth and semi dry. Good fine carbonation. Sweetish malts. Touch of vanilla. Spicy pine hops, earthy and with a light minty vibe. Light citric peel. Mild bitterness builds. A light and semi dry finish. Didn’t get much barrel apart from the vanilla. Lovely beer though!
3.9 Orange pour with minimal off-white head. Piney, woody, citrus aromas. Very light carbonation, slightly boozy flavour, pine, woody, spicy, very dry finish with nice bitterness.
3.9 Pours a hazy golden colour with a white head. Aroma is malt, pine, citrus, wood, herbs and hops. Taste is medium sweet leading to a big hoppy finish.
