Stone Smoked Porter - Chipotle Peppers

Stone Smoked Porter - Chipotle Peppers

Stone Smoked Porter w/ Chipotle Peppers is a thing of spicy glory, with the just-right heat of smoked jalapeños (aka chipotles) that combines beautifully with the beer’s peat-smoked malt and roasty character. The idea came about in 2006 when Merchandise Manager Chris Carroll suggested we make a special "South of the Border Stone Smoked Porter" for Cinco de Mayo that year. One sip, and we were hooked!

3.9 Pours slightly translucent dark brown body with reddish hues. Thin light tan head. Roasted malt and cocoa aroma with a touch of smoke. Taste is bitter chocolate, some burned coffee. Charred oak and a hint of tobacco. Dry finish; the pepper really comes through on the back end. Heat is not overpowering, but enough to take notice. Nice addition of spiciness. Enjoyable with good complexity.
3.9 Dry roasty coffee, light vanilla and cocoa with very minor pepper aroma. dark red body and light beige head. Dry roasty coffee and cocoa flavors with a nice spicy Chipotle flavor in the end. Smooth with a little heat in the end.
3.9 Aromas of milk chocolate, cocoa powder, mild chipotle. Black with a lasting minimal, tan head. Dry, subtly spicy, earthy, toasty, with raw cocoa flavors. Full bodied.
3.6 Red-brown pour with light brown head. Aroma is smoky and peppers. Taste is roasted malt, smoke and peppers. The smoke and peppers are up front, balanced by the roasted malt base. Very little heat. Dry. Nice lacing.
3.2 Bottle. Pours very dark brown with a frothy quickly disappearing brown head that leaves no lace. Aroma is Chipotle and smoke. Light bitterness, flavor follows nose, light to medium body, thin texture and a lingering finish that features Chipotle picante into the far finish.
3.5 Pours pitch black with a one finger beige head. Peppery aroma with just a hint of smoke. Flavour wise it starts of with notes of cocoa, charred wood, some fruitiness from the pepper and the end is spicy. Alright mouthfeel with good amount of carbonation.
4.1 I’ve enjoyed a lot of chilli beers before and usually the heat is best when mixed with food but here the Chipotle is subtle enough for just quaffing. I’ll pair with fajitas shortly.
3.9 Deep brown color, frothy beige head. Light charcoal and toast nose. Subtle smoke flavor with an espresso bitter dryness. Nice!
2.3 Light retention and medium lacing. Smells of cocoa, malt and peppery spices. Tastes of peppery malt, cocoa and a little beefy. Semi-spicy finish.
3.7 Bottle. Pour is deep black with a light tan head Aroma is dark chocolate, caramel, a hint of coffee and spice. Taste is chocolate and coffee with some vanilla. Back end has the chipotle and the smoked malt. Bottle cellared for 1 year.
3.6 Bottle from my aunt Pam. Muddy brown pour with an off-white head. Aroma is peppers, chocolate, and a little beef. Taste is roasted, more pepper, and a good cocoa finish.
4.0 66cl bottle from BottleDog, London. 12-09-2014. Pours hazy dark copper with nice tan head. Moderate head retention, some lacing. Smoky, coffee, spicy aromas. Medium body (maybe some more body would be appreciated), average carbonation, oily texture. Taste is hot, smoky, coffee. Hot flavours dominate, but yet balanced beer, smoky notes being very subtle at the beggining. Really hot aftertaste. Very enjoyable.
3.6 Poured from a bomber to a shaker pint glass. Deep brown with thick tan head. Light smoke and boozy aroma with minimal chocolate note. Coffee/roast flavor with a nicely balanced spice/heat from the chipotle as an after flavour.
3.6 Poured from bomber into pint glass. The aroma is a bit disagreeable, with a pungent pepper and smoke flavor that is less appetizing than it is foul. The flavor is solid though. Moderate smoke with a mild spicy bite. I would like it to be hotter, but it was still hotter than I expected. Though the beer is kinda straightforward and not very complex, it executes what it sets out to do.
4.1 12 fl. oz. on tap @ The Lower Depths. Pours very dark brown with a low off-white head. Aroma is roasted malts, smoked ham and chipotle. Flavor is roasted malts, smoked ham and lots of chipotle in flavor and burn. Good balance. One of the best chili-beers I’ve ever had.
3.6 Smoked goodness. Smooth.Olive nose. Smokey lead. Then a strong punch of peppers. Big fan
3.7 2014/12/02 - Pours a clear, dark brown-amber colour with a frothy, khaki head that quickly reduces. Aroma is dark chocolate, vanilla, coffee and sweet toasted malts. Taste is dark chocolate, semi sweet malts, roasted coffee, smoke and a hint of spicy peppers. Mouthfeel is medium with mildly biting carbonation. Finish is dry and mildly bitter with a touch of chili heat. Nice balance between semi sweet malt, smoke and spicy peppers.
3.6 Stone limited summer edition purchased in Vermont. Pours a deep brown-copper colour with a creamy beige head, great retention and lots of lacing. Sweet malty aromas with some mild roasted one in the background and light spicy spices. Hints of dark fruits. The taste is where you feel the chipotle peppers with some mild spicy warm feeling in the finish. Not sweet for the rest, but just light roasted malts. Wish I would of tried this one fresher as it seems milder, but overall another great brew from Stone.
3.8 Pours black with some of the smoke in the aroma. Lots of roast and smoke in the flavor with the chipotle peppers coming in later and staying on the tongue.
4.1 Bomber. What an incredible brew. Everything the Smoked Porter is already with an incredible and balanced chipotle backing throughout the whole brew. Spicy finish. Delicious.
4.5 Sweet soft taste with a subtle spiciness from the peppers! Dark pre. Dessert porter, delicious! Needs maybe a little more heat...
3.9 Bottle sample at a tasting at Beer & Beyond, Tel Aviv. Clear dark brown with small brownish head. Aroma of coffee, dark chocolate, vanilla, roasted malt, light sweetness, notes of chili. Complex flavor, roasted malt, smoked, dark chocolate, some chili notes, dry moderate sweetness and bitterness. Light carbonation. Medium-bodied. Excellent.
3.8 "the aroma is great...smokey with a hint of spice, and all the porter roastiness still intact. the flavor, especially the finish was a little too strong for me - all smoke and pepper, no poter, but overall it was a unique brew worth trying. definitely mellower in the bottle (2012) but the aroma is not as awesome.
3.6 Bottle. Red fruit, vegetal pepper, and slightly phenolic wood smoke aroma. Clear ruby black under a lasting off-white cover. Fairly dry, roasted barley vanilla flavour that is quickly followed by smoky, spicy, vegetable-y peppers. Moderate carbonation, moderate to medium bitterness, smooth and spicy.
3.1 Served on tap in a snifter Appearance – The beer is served a deep-deep brown color with a one finger of tan colored head. The head has a good level of retention, slowly fading to leave a light level of lace on the sides of the glass. Smell – The aroma of the beer is biggest of sweeter aromas of chocolate and caramel as well as some nice hits of roasted malt and chocolate with a little bit of a more vanilla and brown sugar like smell. While it is the chipotle variety it has very little of it in the nose with just a hint of heat from the peppers detected in the smell. While not much hot pepper the smell is rather delicious. Taste – While the nose shows very little chipotle, the mouth shows much more. The taste begins with a drier roasted malt flavor with roast and toast and a little bit of caramel and brown sugar sweetness. As the taste advances the chocolate flavors pick up a bit, but with a loss of much of the sweetness. All the while a light heat of chipotle pepper comes to the tongue. This flavor really starts to pick it up toward the end all while the sweeter flavors fade. With the dwindling of the sweet and the increase in the chipotle one is left with a slightly lingering burn on the tongue. Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is on the average to slightly thicker and creamier side with a carbonation level that is on the average side. For the mix of darker and spicier flavors of the brew the more moderate ground is rather nice and creates a decent base for the brew. Overall – Ah a somewhat decent porter, but the hot pepper sorta throws me off and makes it not really a nice sipping brew and not one I will come back to. I much prefer the standard or the vanilla over this, but if you like spicy things then this may be up your alley.
3.8 Bottle poured a deep dark brown hue w/ large frothy tan head and some lacing. Moderate smoky malt aroma. Initial flavor is moderate sweet w/ a moderate bitter finish. Tastes are jalapeño, chipotle, roasted malt, and nutty almond skin. Full bodied with an enjoyable moderate pepper heat level.

3.8 [Bottle (660ml)] Pours a deep dark amber-brown with an average size lasting frothy beige head. Good lacing on the glass. Aroma is malty with a good amount of chipotle, some light smoke, coffee and chocolate. Nice flavour, smoky and quite spicy -- in a good way -- along with some coffee and chocolate in the back. Medium bodied. I love how spicy this is -- really good stuff.
3.5 22oz. Pours dark brown medium tan head. Light aroma of chocolate, roasted malt, and spice. Medium sweet taste. Medium-heavy body, slick texture, spicy finish. Spice builds the further along I go, good overall.
