Stoudts Fat Dog Stout (Vintages 2004 and later)

Imperial Oatmeal Stout

This unique ale merges the smooth and complex richness of an Oatmeal Stout with the assertive hoppiness of Imperial Stout. Fat Dog has an inviting silky-black color, a prominent roasted malt character, and a chocolatey, coffee-like finish.

3.7 Bottle at Bierstube in Philly. Opaque brown pour with minimal head - from what started as a nearly frozen bottle. Warmed up to a nice complex dark caramel brew. Medium-thick. Liquorice. Chocolate Twizlers. Ripe figs. Brown bananas. Carob. Raisins. Nice cloudy dark full brew with notes of red brown stone fruit. Works for me.
3.4 Pours dark brown with a short tan head that fades fast to a thick rim and partial coating. Some wet lacing. Aroma is cocoa malt and oatmeal. Thick and viscous mouthfeel. Taste is cocoa/baked chocolate and oatmeal. Sweetness balanced by a backing mild bitterness and lingers a bit. Aftertaste is roasted malt and oatmeal - and a hint of bitterness. Alcohol pretty well-disguised.
3.6 Tan head dark pour aromas grain chocolate cocoa liquorice the flavours cocoa chocolate rich tasting oatmeal medium bitter roast coffee bean liquorice not a lot of depth but good to drink the finish best tastes malts lasting bitter sweetness not bad
3.6 Black with a decent off-while to tan head. Aroma roasty and chocolaty, dark fruit, ash, coffee, bitter chocolate again. Taste full and roasty, butter chocolate, not very sweet, quite smooth. Roast and espresso finish, with warming alcohol in stomach. Nice.
3.5 2009 batch from Cory in OH. outside of the aroma, this was a super nice beer. the aroma was flat and boring, but the beer was SUPER smooth. the flavor of roasted oats and coffee would make this a good breakfast beer, with a nice semi-sweet finish. "
3.9 Extra from trade. Deep black with foamy head and light lacing, some brown translucent edges. Nose of dark malts, some coffee and chocolate. Medium to full body, hefty for an oatmeal stout. Really rich dark chocolate finish with light sweetness. Really well done.
4.6 Perfectly balanced. Lightly chocolate. Finishing bitter coffee. Heavy yet perfect. Have two! Tap & bottle
3.3 Hmm, thin & a weak aroma for an imperial. I’d like this to be much chewier. No head on the pour w/ a subtle aroma. This is quite disappointing!
3.4 Transfer from BA review on 11-7-12- Poured from bottle into snifter Appearance – Pours a deep brown nearly black color with a two finger tan head. The large bubbles in the head pop slowly over time to give a nice level of lacing. Smell – The aroma is of some roasted malt and oatmeal. Mixed with this is a light hoppy and alcohol flavor. Taste – The taste begins with a sweeter and roasted flavor. Mixed with this is a caramel sweetness. Flavors of oat and some lighter cocoa soon come to the tongue as well as an increase in the roasted and a sweet caramel taste. In the end some toffee and a light herbal hop flavor come to the tongue. The flavor is rather interesting - slightly roasty and sweet yet hoppy and a little astringent. Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is on the thicker and creamier side with a carbonation level that is rather average. The thickness of the body is quite nice for the oat and dark flavors, allowing all the strong dark flavors and oat to linger on the tongue. Overall – It was an alright stout. The appearance was nice and the feel very much so. The taste starts out very appealing and for the most part is nice. The smell however and the finish to the taste leave something to be desired. Not one I would likely frequent, but it is a tough one to call. Overall, I would recommend to give it a go and see what you think of it yourself.
3.8 Pours black. Aroma is roasted malts and chocolate. The taste is lightly sweet with the alcohol coming out in the aftertaste.
3.7 Bottle at Paul’s blind tasting. Backlog. No label taken. Pours dark brown tan head. Nose/taste of roasted oats, roast chocolate and light coffee roast. Medium body. Creamy mouthfeel.
3.8 Bottle pours opaque dark brown/black. Nose lots of roast, bakers dark chocolate and hint of oatmeal. Taste sweet malt and chocolate up front. Then roast and light bitter mid palate. More roast and chocolate flavors than coffee. Light bitter finish. Average mouth feel.
3.6 Bottle at oatmeal stouts tasting at Beer&Beyond shop. Dark brown, nearly black with a medium beige head. Roasted aroma with some coffee and earthy notes. Sweet with dark chocolate, coffee, dried fruits, medium bitterness, quite alcoholic. Medium-full bodied, creamy and smooth mouthfeel. Decent IS.
4.5 Notes of cocoa in the aroma with malt sweetness. Tastes not as sweet as bitter roasty malts take over the cocoa. Really awesome stuff.
3.9 Firkin at Real Ale. Pours black with thin tan head. Aroma or chocolate, roast, dark fruit, brown sugar. Medium to full body, oily mouthfeel. Milk chocolate taste, roast, nut. Haven’t had this one in quite some time and it was much better than I remembered it to be.
3.4 Pours a caramel colored head with decent lacing. Roasted coffee beans and chocolate on the nose. Flavors of noticeable chocolate, dark fruit, caramel. One of Stoudts best offerings.
3.5 12oz bottle poured into a tulip glass and served at room temp. Hazy and very dark brown color with a big rocky beige head. Aromas of dark chocolate and coffee liquor, with pleasant roastiness and grassy hops. Espresso flavors, roasted malts, some carobs, light tartness, medium bitterness and faint sour milk and alcohol notes. A bit over carbonated, med-full body, smooth and overall not bad.
3.7 Trade With Theydon_Bois. Thanks. Vintage ?? Pours Black With a small creamy head. Sweet nose of chocolate, oat, fruit and ashes. Flavor adds mild coffee and a vaguely fruity tartness. Smooth and dry. Slight oxidation but great vinousness. My guess is 4 or 5 years old. Tasty.
4.2 Pours Black, when held to a light only the edges of a pint glass shows light. Two finger light beige head with nice lacing. Aroma of coffee, dark roasted malts. Rich malty-molasses, sweet coffee taste. Full body, alcohol is noticeable but not a distraction to the taste profile. Finishes coffee, dark chocolates, rich malts with a slight bitterness. Very nice!
3.8 Bottle. Pours black with tan head. Aroma of coffee, chocolate. Taste is smooth, bitter, chocolate. Nice stout.
4.1 Pours a dark ruby brown with a short caramel colored head. Smoky wood and cherry on the nose. Scrubby sensation livens up the otherwise wet mouthfeel. It becomes a bit astringent at the dry finish. The flavor is very good. Cherry is prominent. Smoky woody flavor. High quality stout.
3.3 Draft. Black with a thin tan head. Aroma oats and hops. Taste adds some roasty and light vanilla notes. Solid boozy punch. Medium crisp palate. Surprising body for the style. Very different.
3.5 Stoudts Fat Dog Stout is a rich dark a stout. It has a thick creamy head that combines an oatmeal stout with an imperial stout and finishes with a hint of coffee and chocolate.
3.7 12 Fl. Oz. Bottle. Poured black with a nice full, foamy tan head. Aroma is mild, roasted malts, dark fruits and some coffee. Taste is quite smooth (especially for an imperial stout), some grain, some coffee and some chocolate. It does has a dry bitter finish. Nice beer.
3.4 Served with a small yet stable, tan head, Pitch black body. Moderate malty aroma, creamy, not much to it. Served super cold, but I recon it will never be too Aromatic. Roasted malt taste, moderate bitter, long yet straightforward aftertaste. Decent brew, nothing spectacular. (On tap at Blind Tiger)
2.8 Bottle: Pours black, with a large, light brown head. Aroma of dark, smoky, chocolate malt, roast, prune and coffee. Flavour is ashy, dry bitter, coffee, with a tart, nearly sour dark fruit tang. Nothing very oatmeal is indicated, leans more towards tart and dry. Just didn’t do it for me.
3.7 Bottle. The pour is nice and dark with a full head. The aroma is full of malt. Nice chocolate notes as well. The taste has a nice body to it. Drinks really nice, like an oatmeal stout should.
