Struise Aardmonnik / Earthmonk

Struise Aardmonnik / Earthmonk

Due to its authenticity, Earthmonk received as little sugar as possible during bottle conditioning in order to preserve all original aromas and flavours. This beer comes with little carbonation and a mini head. Is best served at cellar temperature and poured generously, meaning from
a hight of approximately 15 to 20 CM, in an upright standing tulip glass.
A big bubbled head will quickly make place for the Earthmonk coming alive! Bottle-conditioned in 33cl (5000 btls.) and 75cl (1000 btls.).

At Struise, we never retire beers. At ratebeer, Beers are retired when a new batch is not bottled within 12 months. As Earthmonk takes 18 months to age on oak... we have to be patient.

4.1 2008 vintage, thanks Fin & Loz! Very dark in the glass, very little head. The aroma is truly amazing / complex! Saddle, cherry, sour, stone fruit pits, a punch in the snoz. The flavor adds caramel at the start, then some light soy, a tiny hint of rubber, great balance of acidity and remaining sugar. Super complex deliciousness!
4.2 750ml bottle. Newest vintage. Pours brownish bordeaux red colour. No head. Burnt caramel with cranberries, earthiness, slight hints of chocolate, coffee in the aroma. Burnt caramel, cranberties, chocolate in the taste. Sourness. Dry palate. Cranberries in the aftertaste. Very nice complexity. Veruy nice brew. Wow. Great Oud Bruin.
4.7 Gevonden bij Willems in Grobbendonk, op 75cl. Zalig bier van de struisse brouwers
4.3 Bottle, vintage 2013, bottle lot no 20180001, bottle date 01 aug 2018, aged for 5 years on Burgundy wine barrels, 8%. Color: Dark ruby to copper, very thin beige head. Aroma: Tart dark and red fruit, red wine. Taste: Starting medium tart, some vinegar, after some seconds combined with moderate to above moderate sweet caramel and dark and red fruit notes, followed by pretty strong red wine and boozy hints towards and at the finish. Some wood. Dry mouthfeel. Well balanced, although the very long red wine BA is very clearly present but not disturbing. Nice complexity. Medium to above medium body, low carbonation. One of the better Flemish Sour Ales for sure. Very nice.
3.9 Rami Rami is drinking an Aardmonnik - Earthmonk (2018) by De Struise Brouwers at Mikkeller Bar Warsaw Slodkawy i malo kwasny, owockowy, susz, miniocet w aromacie tylko, wisniowe piwerko takie i winne. Ciut ciut tanin. Fajowo mocno. Posmak sciaga usto ciut
3.5 Red brown colour with thin head. Aroma and flavour have red wine vinegar acidic sharpness. Lots of depth from red fruits and wine.
4.5 Bottle from the Struise beer shop in Bruges. Poursmrky brown, thin head. Aroma red wine with a hint of balsamic. Taste is vinous, initially tart, sweet cherries and raisins. Medium bodied but limited carbonation. Very good indeed.
4.8 Bottle at Beerlovers Bar Antwerpen. Hazy brown color with beige head and an incredible lacing. Aroma is red wine, tobacco, wood, a touch rum soaked cherries, chocolate, leathery, superb complexity. Taste is vineous, wood, leathery, a touch brown sugar, tobacco, tannic. Silky mouthfeel with very tiny carbonation. Extremely well-balanced, extremely tasty. Absolutely incredible Oud Bruin, probably the best I've ever had! A masterpiece beyond comprehension, and completely unexpected. And I had thought Oerbier Reserva is the perfect Oud Bruin...
4.3 Bottle thanks to Jordan pours out amber brown color topped with a small sand head. Nose is berries wood oak barrels some light funk and tartness. Tatse is more of the nice berries some fruit notes barrel and some sweetness.
4.6 2008 bottle at Beerlovers Bar, Antwerp. Intense aroma and taste of pumpernickel, mild balsamic vinegar, wood, red wine and raisins that interchange/overlap with each sniff/sip you take. Almost no carbonation, pretty light (feeling) body and a slick mouthfeel but bursting with flavour. Take your time while sipping on this beer to experience it's complexity and fully enter the realm of the earthmonk.
4.0 330ml bottle, 2008 vintage from the Struise shop in Bruges. Pours a little murky, red-brown with minimal head, as advertised. Aromas of balsamic, cherries, oak, red wine. The taste is quite tart with balsamic vinegar flavours, sweet with cherry flavours, dry red wine, complex oak tannins. Surprisingly not thin bodied at all, quite smooth, low carbonation, wine-like oaky astringency. A very, very good Flemish Red and extremely enjoyable.
3.8 Many thanks to Erzengel for this 2008 vintage bottle. A clear dark orange brown beer with a very small fast diminishing off-white head. Aroma of riped dark fruits, vinegar, wood. Taste of mild tart red fruits, riped fruits, plums, mild vinegar, wood, nice!
4.0 Bottle at kulminator. Pours dark brown with beigeish head. Aroma is sour, oaky, malty, acidic. Flavor is sweet and sour, bitter, oaky, malt, fruity. Finish is dry. Overall: great, but would have liked to try it a couple of years ago.
4.1 Dark color with a small tan head. Nice aroma with a fine intensity. Pleasant sourness. Medium (+) body and a fine carbonation level. Ok balanced sourness and acidity. Vinous, funky, yeast, toffee, oak and fruity, Good complexity. Lovely evening sipper. [Bottle at The Blåbær Lambik 2017 Release queue outside Himmeriget in Copenhagen, Denmark]
3.8 Thanks Brad for sharing the bottle! Poured into a taster showing translucent caramel brown with white foam lacing. The nose shows a lot of sweet Belgian yeast. The palate is medium bodied and lightly carbonated. Lightly tart with strong flavors of Belgian yeast.
4.0 Bottle, vintage 2008. Pours a clear dark brown beer with a quickly disappearing off white head on top. Aroma is rich, full with woody characters, red fruits, oak, some tart fruits and has vineous notes as well. Flavor is incredibly full, yet really sublte with light tarty notes, richness of red fruits, all sorts of berries and such. Has a body that is light tart and vineous, overall is quite fruity and almost sweetish. Mouthfeel is oily and silky, has a dry tart aftertaste that really lasts a long time. No carbonation going on, but what a great beer.
3.8 Bottle from the dregs run delivery. Thanks Craig! Pours hazy brown with a thin beige head. Aromas of wood, wine, sour funk, chocolate. Taste is light sour, light chocolate, red wine. Light sour finish.
4.4 Murky dark brown color with just a bit of tan foam. Aroma has really nice dried fruit notes with lots of sour raisins and some figs. Taste starts sour and fruity with sour cherries and grapes, like a classic flanders ale, but gets more complex with really nice dried fruits, mostly raisins and figs. It’s like a sour/acetic quadrupel or something like that. Medium body, slightly syrupy, just a bit of carbonation. A really complex beer with quadrupel type flavors but sour like a flemish ale.
4.5 Bottle shared. Dark brown pour with no head. Notes of macerated grapes and cherries, cognac, cocoa, subtle apple and grape vinegar. Medium body, low carbonation and a sour, sweet and bitter finish.
4.5 Many thanks for this beer to JefVerstraete. Vintage 2008. Kwasne o owocowej strukturze piwo, a raczej wino smakowalo jak wino malaga, rodzynki i moczona suszona sliwka w spirytusie, wyczuwalny alkohol, ocet winny, ocet balsamiczny, figi i daktyle. jagody i jezyny. Nuty drzewne mocno obecne, wszystko to obtacza mocny kwasek. Fajne i octowo winne piwo. Wyglad to jak po nalaniu do kieliszka dobrego burgundzkiego wina, totalnie zero piany, bardzo ciemno czermone o granatowych przeblyskach, pod swiatlo krwisto atramentowa barwa. Blizej do wina niz do piwa. Super pasuje do wolowiny i dziczyzny. Super
3.3 33cl-fles op tasting bij Elie. Merci! U: Donkerbruin met bruine schuimkring. G: Cacao, rood fruit, hout, porto en kruiden. S: Rood fruit, vineus, porto en chocolade. Zoetig met een licht bittertje. Zure afdronk. M: Zeer vicieus met weinig carbonatie.
4.6 2008 bottle thanx too John :) First of all i must say that i am not a "fan" of the style...but this beer blew my mind! Sweet and sour with a woody backbone...dark fruit, cherries, dades, figs, plums, nuts and a nice touch of chocolate and even coffee. Really well balanced...sweet nor sour takes the upperhand. The low carbo really works well here. Just lovely!
2.8 Appearance: 2008 vintage. Dark brown/red. Basically no head. Pretty flat-looking. Aroma: Dark fruit, cherries. Taste: Dark fruit, prunes, cherries, wood. Tartness, but also sweetness. Almost like a port. Better than I expected. Bought: Trade with tderoeck - thanks!, 330 ml Info: 22/7-2016, 67/100, BB: 27/4-2016
4.7 Vintage 2008 bottle at home, 24/3/16. Very dark reddish brown colour, no real head just some beige bubbles. Amazingly complex nose with rich porto (!) and red and dried fruity tones, nutty, toffee, cask/vanilla. Beautiful porto, vinous, cask, toffee, herbal tones, medium sour, mildly tard, earthy bitter. Great balance, rounded but big flavours. Intensely lingering red fruity, porto, mildly tard aftertaste. Huge body, low-absent carbonation. Best ale in my favorite style: chapeau! 25/11/21 re-rate vintage 2008: still such a complex and beautiful beer, only downside is the thinning body. Re-rate Vintage 2013 bottle at home, 4/9/19. Beautiful Burgundy loaded Flemish Brown nose, some vanilla. Taste is a bit harsh on dryness and acidity, lacks the portorization of the older vintage. Good body, medium carbonation. Re-rate 2013 ed, 18/11/21. Harshness in high acidity and dryness is gone, mellowed out but that makes it quite blend.
3.5 Bottle shared at Daniels place. 20/02/2016. Many thanks to Paulo for this one. Reddy mahogany brown coloured pour with light tan head. Aroma is red wine vinegar, brown bread, tangy apple. Palate is semi sweet, highish carbonation . Tangy. Flavour is semi sweet, brown bready, granny Smith apple, some spicy vinegar. Some a jammy fruits. Decent.
3.5 Bottle share in Richmond, many thanks to Paul for this one. As ’Struise Aardmonnik / Earthmonk’, 2008 vintage, 8%. Very dark brown with a red hue, big foamy brown head. Aroma is malt vinegar, earthy, some sharp acetic stuff, rounded balsamic, rubber. Body is smooth with light carbonation. Taste is vinegar and brown sauce, meaty, a little woody, light acidity with some booze showing up. Pretty nice one to mull over.
3.7 2008 bottle in The Beer Temple, generously shared by Trevor, thanks! Dark brown color. No head. Aroma’s: sour, vinegar, lightly oxidized, raisins. Additionally some sweetness retronasal. Flavor is moderate to full sweet and moderate sour. Light bodied, perhaps because of the lack of carbonation. Flavors linger. Actually really nice, true Flemish.
3.8 750ml bottle from trade with fonefan. Thank you Jan! Brown muddy hazy color with small beige head that quickly disappears. Vinous aroma, wood, yeasty, dark tart fruity, light malty, caramel notes when it gets a little warmer. Sweet and acidic taste like aroma. Medium oily body with soft to flat carbonation.
