Struise Black Damnation II - Mocha Bomb

Struise Black Damnation II - Mocha Bomb

The Black Damnation series is a dark twist of Urban’s mind. His idea is to realize a dozen beers with the use of Black Albert, and over a period of two years, that are as black as hell, filthy rich in the nose and with a massive taste.

Black Damnation II is yet another blend with the use of Hel & Verdoemenis from Brouwerij De Molen. This time a level more complex than BD I. 50% of Black Albert was used that matured for a while on whole coffee beans out of a craft Columbian coffee plantation. 25% of H&V was used that aged for 6 months on JD barrels at Struise. Another 25% of Cuvée Delphine was used.

Beware: labels are the same, taste however isn’t. Some bottles are recognizable because of he handwritten 2 on them.

4.1 This is one of my favorites of the Struise Brouwers. This is not sweet as the American stouts tend to be and not as dry as European stouts often are. The aroma is not strong and not the most appealing aspect of the beer to me : i notice something like coffee and a bit of bourbon, maybe a bit of malt but all of this very faint. Pitch black of color. The taste has coffee, dark chocolate, malt-bitterness and i notice something of the Bourbon barrels this beer has been in for 6 moths. Lots of taste that keeps on lasting !! Mouthfeel: velvety and smooth, little carbonation. I like this one: nice balance between dry/bitter and sweet.
4.4 LCI. Uit de fles geschonken. Prachtige imp stout. Volop koffie, chocola en bourbon in de smaak, mooi in balans. Mooie dikke textuur, prettig mondgevoel. Heerlijk dus!
3.9 2021. version at 13% abv. Big decadent chocolate with some booze and glue. Black color with no head. Sweet chocolate with licorice. I'm not getting much of the moccha. Medium body, zingy.
4.5 Gerate versie is 13%. Redelijk makkelijk drinkbaar. Fles '21 XII # Proefglas
4.3 Dark black in colour, smeels of coffee and strong. Flavours are coffee, roasted malts, cacao and liquorice. Quite a boozy tasting beer but not overly boozy like some beers.
3.3 Tasted as Struise Black Damnation II - Mocha Bomb (Aged for 2 years in Kentucky Bourbon barrels). Black color, small brown head. Aromas of coffee, cacao, roasted malt, dried fruit, soy and slight bourbon. Taste of coffee, soy, roasted malt, licorice, cacao and slight boiled vegetables. Feels off.
4.1 0.33 l bottle as 'Black Damnation 02 - Moccha Bomb' at 13% abv, aged for 2 years in Kentucky bourbon barrels, purchased at 'Sterk Avondverkoop'', bottled in February 2021. Pitch black with a medium large, foamy, stable, beige head. Sweetish-malty, gently roasty aroma of dark chocolate, quite some coffee, light dark fruits, some bourbon and a touch of wood. Rather sweet, malty, gently roasty, a little fruity taste of praline, coffee, bourbon, hazelnut and some dark fruits, followed by a short, rather roasty-bitter, gently boozy finish. Medium to full body, smooth and slightly creamy mouthfeel, very soft carbonation. Heavy and rich beer, fairly complex and saturating. Another great BA beer from 'Struise' who seem to be back on track.
3.5 Bottle 33cl. Black with a creamy brown head. Metallic aroma with coffee tones. Thick, intense taste. Flavours are actually soft. Surprisingly easy to drink. Well balanced for such a strong beer. A bit sweet but not too much.
4.2 Pours a pitch-black coloration with a small, fizzy, quickly receding head. Smells of roasted, caramel malt, chocolate, coffee and dark fruits, with notes of raisin and fig, as well as hints of licorice, vanilla and bourbon-soaked oak. Taste is an excellent balance of roasted, caramel malt, distinct chocolate, coffee and dark fruit, with notes of raisin, plum and fig, as well as some brown sugar and spicy accents of vanilla, licorice, clove and black pepper, as well as just a hint of bourbon-soaked oak. Finishes with a medium bitterness and some chocolate, coffee, dark fruit and spice lingering in the aftertaste. Full mouthfeel with a rich body and light/medium carbonation. I certainly didn't expect the Jack Daniels BA variant of Black Damnation to be one of my favorites of the series, but here we are. I guess it's the blend of different beers and aging on coffee beans that makes this, creating quite a roasted, dry and bitter flavor profile with hints of sweetness, quite distinct spicy accents and a good barrel presence that feels just a little boozy, but very lightly so and in a good way, with some heavy oak accents. Overall, this makes for quite a complex, yet subtely balanced beer that is rich in body and character, making for a very enjoyable sipper that is best savoured by letting it warm up a bit and taking your time with it.
4.2 330ml bottle. Nose is caramel, brief marshmallow, boozy, chocolate, soy, roast. Taste is chocolate, roast, plums, licorice, soy, coffee, there is a light almond and bourbon note, with the bourbon emerging as the beer breathes and warms up. The finish has a little ash leading to a herbal bitter finish which stops it being the cloying mess so common now. Mouthfeel is velvet. BA remains the high water mark for me as a stout, however the barrel while suitably balanced, does not improve on the base.
3.9 330ml bottle at 13%. Pours jet black with a small head. Aroma is boozy dried fruits, dark chocolate and a little bourbon. Taste has dark chocolate throughout with a boozy light bourbon finish.
4.1 Tap at Volo. Pours pure black with thin white head. Smells pretty stouty, chocolate and roast, maybe a tiny hint of soy sauce. Taste is very strong bitter dark chocolate with notes of plum. Interestingly this beer tastes both sweet and dry, both of which seem to add to the sticky and chewy nature of this beer. The dryness makes you want to keep drinking it even though it's extremely strong and rich, lovely!
2.8 0,33l bottle at home. Bottled 10/02/2021. black color, small coffee colored head. smells spices, earthy, peppery, bit smoky, bit medical, vanilla. ok to nice smell. full body, soft carbonation. tastes earthy, peppery, light veggies, medical, herbal, some vanilla, boozy. finishes bitter / sweet with notes of peppery, medical and vanilla notes. unpleasant. Not how Imp Stouts are done in 2021.
4.3 Tap at FOB, Rimini, Italy. Pours very dark, practically black, with moderate very fine foam, light brown. Aroma is intense, even over distance, of molasses, malty, caramel, lots of licorice, pepper. Body is fairly thick, with small tickling carbonation and nice stickiness. Taste is intensely sweet, with nice roasty bitterness, some oxidation. Final is long and peppery.
4.0 Black colored beer with a small beige head. Aroma of mocha and coffee. Smells like coffee, plums, chocolate, licorice. Very tasty.
4.0 Botella @El Cabanón, Avilés. 22/05/2021. Color negro opaco corona de espuma beige escasa, aromas torrefactos, café, sabor torrefacto, tostados, café.
4.2 Bottle from Hoptimism. This is the 2019ish 13% version. Black colour with a tan head. Aroma and taste are coffee and toffee malty and sweet taste. Smooth body.
3.4 Bottle, 33 cl @home. Pours a opaque dark brown with a diminishing shortlasting light brown head. Aroma is tartish coffee and overriped plums. Taste is sweet with coffee, dark chocolate and overriped plums. Medium bitterness and a short aftertaste. Low-medium carbonation. A decent Stout but nothing more.
4.3 33cl flesje via Mans, Margraten Alcoholpercentage van 13% Uitgeschonken in Hopt glas Uiterlijk: zwart met mooie crèmekleurige schuimkraag Aroma en smaak: aroma droppig, gebrande mouten, smaak is koffie, gebrande mouten, chocolade, melasse, boozy van de Jack Daniels, eiken, vanille, roasty bitterheid.
4.2 Ciemnobrunatne praktycznie czarne nieprzezroczyste piwo z solidną pianą która opadając lekko zdobi szkło. Aromat kawy, nuty palone, plus bourbon. W smaku kawa, ciemne owoce, trochę drewna i nuty bourbonu.
3.8 Not bad but the aging removed all of the coffee except for a hint in the end of the finish. Otherwise spicy, roasty, licorice, molasses aroma. Flavors are similar to nose, adding in maybe some cocoa, on the sweet side but with good carbonation to balance. Low bitter. Fairly smooth. Slightly boozy finish.
4.8 Fles 33cl thuis. 13%. IBU 72. Vintage 2018. Vol en romig. Laurier, roasted malts, stevige koffie, bitters, vijg, pruim, ergens een wijnzuurtje, druivenschil, caramel, zoeten, bourbontonen, boozy, chocolade, vanilletonen. Mooi bier. (2-4-2021).
3.9 33cl bottle vintage 2018 bottled 10/02/2021 Pours pitch black with beige disappearing head. Coffee and sweet (bourbon?) alcohol. Coffee, moccha, sweet (bourbon?) on the palate. Just like the new BD IX, the BA is barely noticeable, just when the beer is really warm. Will age the rest of my bottles and hope for the best. Good but expected more.
3.5 33 cl flesje. 75 cl was beter.
4.1 A 750ml bottle, bottled on 25th July 2018, with a best before date of 24th July 2023. Poured into a Black Damnation tasting glass. It was black in colour with a thin brown head that dissipated fairly quickly but settled to a ring around the glass, while leaving some decent lacing. Aromas of coffee, chocolate, with bourbon notes. Tastes of coffee, chocolate, slight roast, bourbon, woody, with a lightly bitter finish. Alcohol warming, medium to full bodied, with soft to moderate carbonation. Overall an enjoyable sipper with lots of coffee aroma and flavours.
4.1 Tap at BGB. Pitch black body, beige crown more than a head. Lovely blasts of coffee and chocolate in the aroma, a bit on the drier side, touches of alcohol, but staying elegant. Smooth malt-driven taste, dried figs, cocoa powder, well, roasted coffee, light plum jam. Staying lean and not overwhelming, if quite warming (though alcohol doesn't intrude into the flavor profile!), roast popping up in the finish. Such a welcome change of pace from the pastry overload of recent years - an excellent flavored RIS, a true classic.
4.0 PINT tasting. Pours black with mahogany foam head. Aroma is coffee, sugared coffee. Taste is mocha for sure, sugared. (Velp 202008)
