Struise Pannepot Grand Reserva (Calvados)

Struise Pannepot Grand Reserva (Calvados)

Note: the latest vintage (2018) released is cognac barrel aged: https://www.ratebeer.com/beer/struise-pannepot-grand-reserva-cognac/880159/, earlier versions were calvados.

"Vintage 2005" description:

Our PGR has aged for 24 months on oak barrels and has been bottled for the first time on the 27th of December 2007. The main difference with the Pannepot Reserva is that PGR matured the last ten months on Calvados oak barrels, adding extra complexity to the beer. We dedicate this beer as a tribute to Jeppe & Michael of Ølbutikken in Denmark. Those gentlemen were the first to discover our beers on an International basis back in 2004 and are responsable somehow for our beers being all over the globe since then. As a token of gratitude towards Jeppe & Michael, the first shipment of PGR was scheduled to Ølbutikken so they could be the first to launch its commercialisation.

Piana delikatnie tworzy się w czasie nalewania, by momentalnie znikać z powierzchni piwa. Aromat to przyjemna mieszanina słodkich nut słodowych, karmelowych, lekko palonych i kwaskowych, wytrawnych akcentów wina. Są owoce, czekolada, minimalnie tytoń i nuty ziemiste.  W smaku jest słodko z lekką pestkową goryczką i delikatną nutą kwaskową. Podstawowy Pannepot ewoluował w kierunku słodkiego, może półwytrawnego wina. Mimo to wciąż są tu nuty czekolady, karmelu, orzechów i delikatnej paloności. Alkohol perfekcyjnie schowany. Wysycenie niskie. Ciało odczuwalne jako średnie. Tekstura miękka, gładka. Posmak długi, półwytrawny, owocowo karmelowo czekoladowy.
4.1 Appearance: Pours hazy dark brown with little tan head, no lacing, with a few sediments. 4/5 Aroma: Brown sugar, caramel, cream, bread dough, sweet malt, ripe apple, ripe plum, raisin, chocolate, clove and yeast, with slight hints of alcohol. 8/10 Taste: Sweet malty plummy raisiny spicy chocolately with very gentle woody tannic hints. Heavy sweetness with mellow bitterness and sourness. Lingering sweet tart malty fruity woody finish. 8/10 Mouthfeel: Medium to full bodied, light carbonation, smooth and oily. 5/5 Overall Vintage 2011, bottled on March 15, 2016. Pleasant and rounded. Boozy but not burning. Well intergrated and highly drinkable. 16/20
4.0 0,33l bottle originally from belgium in a box. Bottle says vintage 2011. Pours black with tanned small head. Plums, woody notes, raisins, winous notes. Sweet and mildly sour. Refined.
4.3 Vintage 2011 Barwa brunatna, klarowne. Piana tylko w formie pierścienia. Aromat złożony, szlachetny. Lekkie nuty winne, drewniane, octowe, suszone owoce, wanilia, śliwki, karmel. W smaku karmel, toffi, brązowy cukier, wino, wanilia, drewno, melanoidyny, przyprawy.
4.1 Vintage 2011. Almost opaque black color with off-white head. Aroma has ripe fruits, wood, chocolate and a hint of sour elements. Taste is malty sweet with long sweet aftertaste. Flavors of ripe fruits, malt, wood, vanilla and toffee. Well balanced.
3.3 Bottle sampled July 2020 (15 years old). Small fluffy off white head that goes down to a lingering lace. Clear black red color. Funky and lught acidity with a bit of dark malts. Acidic taste with a funkiness that makes it still delightful. Medium body and low bitterness. A beer that lasts 15 years and is still delightful too drink just explains how good this beer was when it was bottled.

3.7 Bottle. Wood, vanilla, raisins, dark grapes, port wine, nuts, ripe apples, chocolate. Complex and moreish. Excellent.
4.1 Black. Aroma of chocolate, caramel, vanilla, red fruits, red wine, raisins, plums, figs, belgium spices. Taste of chocolate, caramel, vanilla, dark fruits, figs, spices. Medium carbonation. Sweet. Low bitterness. Well hidden alcohol. Medium body. Tasty beer
3.8 This was the 2010 version so yes, it had some age on it. Found it in a bottleshop in Chicago. It held up even and kept the carbonation. Strong Belgian candy aroma with raisin and malt. Bready flavoring with other dark fruits. Full body.
4.1 2011 rok. Ciemno brązowe z prześwitami rubinowymi. Brak piany. Nos: śliwka w alko, mleczna czekolada, karmel, słodko i alkoholowo Paszcza: wytrawne, kawa zbożowa, lekko alkoholowe, tęgie, lekko szczypiące w podniebienie, lekka wędzoność, drewno, calvados.
Texture huileuse voire vineuse, corps moyen.
4.3 Mahogany colour, very thin and short lived head. Aroma lightly spiced dried fruit. Taste is initially sweet but not cloying so, dates, prunes, bananas. Low carbonation. Lovely.
4.0 I have great hopes for this one, mine is Vintage 2011. A small explosion on bottle opening. Smell- medium-strong to strong, caramel, malt, alcohol, sweetness, roast, Belgian and all that goodness. Foam- medium-thick, some caramel, malt, alcohol, sweetness notes.Small head, medium-dark brown color. Appearance- generic bottle cap with date on it, somewhat simple bottle. It looks to be hazy dark brown, but not black yet. some fancy bubbles visible with the light going through it, kind of looks nice. Taste-weak malt, acidic notes, caramel, sweetness, alcohol. More malt and some acidic bitter notes in back, sweetness, citrus, caramel. Not sure if I like this or Rochefort Trappistes 8 more, the scores are the same, just this does not get a bonus for the bottle cap. I like this a lot. Old fisherman ale 2017 PNP No4 - bit more sour notes in the initial sip. also, more sourness following. Alcohol in the mix also. Thill hint of dried plums and Belgian yeast. Definitely needs more aging... 5 more years and this could be nice. Either way I will not reduce the score. But I must admit with time some sweetness and tingling creeps in... I like that.

4.2 Aromat intensywny, ciemne owoce, czekolada, nuty jakby drewniane, delikatnie jakby kokos w tle.

Czuć czekoladę, orzechy, ciemne owoce, kokos- to wszystko delikatnie uzupełnia posmak calvadosa.
3.3 Mahogany coloured, small head, spicy, dried fruits, bananas, full-bodied, oaky
4.5 2011 vintage, good looking dark brown colour with minimal head. Aroma that's wild and complex with oak, cigars, fruit and spices. Taste is balanced, on the sweeter side. Smooth, creamy mouthfeel with minimal carbonation and a surprising bit of sting in the back of the throat. Overall a simply sublime beer and easily the best quad I've ever tasted.
3.9 Achetée à Bruges. Vintage 2011.
3.8 Huge thanks to kappldav123 for that 0,33 l bottle. Got this 2010 version months ago. A darkest red brown, nearly black in the glass. No head. Intensive dark berryfruity smell with some choco. Taste is smooth, intensive fruity, hopy nuts, caramel, some sweetness, whiskey barrel, coffee. No carbonation. Warming alcoholic. Very enjoyable stuff.
3.7 2011 vintage, purchased at Bine & Vine in November 2017 (11.2 ounce bottle for $10.99). POURS a brown-garnet hue with a thin layer of tan foam and some yeast floaties of considerable size. AROMA of sticky treacle and caramel, Calvados (actually detectable from the barrel -- more barrel/booze than apple), stewed dark fruits, with some light smoke. FLAVOR of smooth caramel, some dark chocolate, bits of butterscotch, with some slightly sour dark fruit, and notable apple brandy in the finish. Seems a little past past its prime with somewhat stale notes and a bit of sourness that seems out of place. It's also complicated a bit by the Calvados which stood out more than I might have thought and -- to my surprise -- does not seem to meld so well with the base beer. It's not bad at all, just below the standard of all the other versions of Pannepot I have had. (1203, 1140)
3.6 Bottle @ home, 2011 vintage. Very dark colour. Beige head with some retention. Aroma's: sweetish, dried fruits, caramel/molasses, none of it overly strong. Retronasal it's light sweet, herbs, light wood. Flavour is light moderate sweet with some wood and light fruity sourness. Medium bodied. Finishes with some wood, dark malt and fruit (raisins) and mild bitterness. Nice enough, but past its prime (but I guess that's my own fault for keeping it in the cellar too long).
4.4 Bottle, vintage 2011. Medium size beige head over a deep btown color. Aroma is ripe fruits, tobacco, liquorice, spices like cinnamon, caramel. Taste is sweetish with sour touch, again spicy, dried fruits, woody, candi sugar. Well-bodied, slicky texture. Medium/low carbonation. Great beer.
4.0 330ml bottle as Old Fisherman's aged on oak 2011 vintage. Pours dark brown colour, medium sized beige head stays. Aroma is malty, nutty, sweeter side, oaky, woody. Taste is malty, oaky, nutty, warming, some dark toffee. Medium + body, average carbonation. Very complex and smooth, well covered alcohol, nice brew
4.2 0,33l Flasche. Dunkles Bier, kaum Schaum. Geruch nach Röstaromen und Rosinen. Schmeckt nach Malz, Honig, Balsâmico und Holz. Komplex, aber Lecker.
