Struise / Stillwater Outblack

Struise / Stillwater Outblack

Collaboration brew with Stillwater Artisanal Ales (USA). Crowned last week with a golden Award for Best newcomer in the world 2011.

This Belgian Strong Ale was married to a still young but powerful style, the Black IPA.

You’ll discover a smooth chocolate like strong ale together with the high & bitter hop schedule of an IPA, and you get a great result...

2.7 0,33l fles gedeeld met bryanvdv zwart met een creme kraag. Smaak en geur zijn munt en menthol met drop. Body is medium.
Forte corpulence. Grosse longueur en bouche. Superbe !
4.1 Bottle. LOT 01/01/2011. Black with a light brown head. Aroma of cocoa and red grapes. Flavour of roasted malts with chocolate sweetness, a vinous touch and a long lasting malty bitterness. Potent stuff and very, very delicate.
3.9 Bottle. Black in color with a tan head. Really musty dark fruityness, bit of peppery spicyness and cold coffee notes in aroma. Bit of burnt wooden smokyness and dark chocolate too. Quite nice. Cocoa and roasted coffee notes in taste, where the chocolate part is more evident at first. Smooth mouthfeel too, excellent. Green herbs and spicy notes in finish together with some warming notes with them nice chocolatey notes still being present.
4.0 330ml bottle poured in a chalice. A: Pours a deep brown to black color. Forms a quite big and dark beige head when poured. Quite aired. Retention is low, however it never disappears completely leaving an almost brown and bubbled layer. Many lacings are left S: Strong on dark chocolate. Belgian yeasts. Fruity and liquorous. Very spicy, notes of anis, cinnamon and mint. Intense flowery hops. Perfect nose T: Very tasty beer, an Struise (thanx god :p). Sweet upfront. Chocolate, roasted malts, hints of coffee, Belgian yeasts. Again, very spicy. Hints of anis and mint. Stingy hoppy bitter end M: Extremely creamy beer. Molasses. Medium carbonation. Delicious bitter aftertaste O: Absolutely drinkable beer despite the 10% ABV. An Struise, nothing else to say [ BA Review @ 1/6/2012 ]
3.9 Extremely odd yet interesting and full-flavored beer. Loaded with a tea-like flavors from start to finish. Cola-like sweetness. Boozy, Long Island Iced Tea aspects, too. Aromas of perfume and herbs follow. Hints of chocolate and softened dark grains. Elements of dark fruit slowly surface, especially as the beer warms; prunes mostly. Also some black licorice in there. What a ride.
3.8 "huh...kind of an interesting bastard son of saison du buff and 395 ipa. very herbal aroma, flavor a little more balanced and fruit forward hoppy. nothing subtle about this brew, but very smooth and tasty. would want again."
3.6 33cl bottle. Pours dark red/brown with a big beige head. Heavy sweet aroma, roasted malt, caramel and grass. The flavor is again a bit grassy, smoked plums, light chocolate and alchool, moderate sweet and bitter.
3.9 Bottle at home. Pours black, nose is sweet, berries, sugary, taste is berries, dry, sweet, rich chocolate, quite oxidised.
3.8 Bottle @ Schraevenacker, Oostvleteren, Belgium. Pours dark brown with a creamy brown head. Aroma of malt, yeast, brown sugar, ripe dark fruits, licorice. Flavor is rather sweet, malty, yeast, caramel, brown sugar, licorice, dark fruits, spice. Medium to full body, average carbonation, some warming alcohol. 010814
4.0 Block like beige head dark pour mild carbonation aromas boozy rich malt fruits yeast doughy spice flavours caramel toffee doughy cinnamon tawny port dark chocolate fudge raisin plums figs brown sugar a bitter sweet goodness lovely on the palate the finish best aftertastes port doughy note rich malts spice fruits rousing ale to drink
3.8 Almost black color, soon vanishing head. Aromas of herbs, roasted malts, overripe fruits and chocolate. Chewy grains against smooth cream, bitter, grassy hops against sweet, roasted, malts and chocolate - this beer is all about contradiction and still tastes very good. Sweet notes define my first impression, chocolate, cane sugar and caramel, balanced by burned, earthy malts. Then, due to a hot alcoholic sting, a complex bitterness rises up. Ripe fruits and alcohol soaked spices melt together with an elegant hop bittness, while a soft roasted, stout-like impression, rye, is backing down the sharpness. Finishes with a gentle dryness, which goes along with ripe, syrupy notes.
4.0 Lovely dense beige head on top of heavy black body. Smooooth nice aroma. Coffee, some dark sugar, chocolate and some oak. Fine thick body but probably a bit to much carbonation. Made it a bit “fizzy”. I like this beers a bit soft carbonated. Complex and lovely flavor. Caramel and toffee coming up. Mild coffee and some chocolate. Dangerously well hidden alcohol. This one is extreme easy drinkable. Really pleasant and tasty stuff. [Bottle from a trade with markextrae]
3.5 From 33cl. Dark brown black, beige foam. Chocolate notes, licorice, dark malts, dried fruits, toffee. Good!
3.8 From a 33 cl bottle at ChurchKey DC. Pours black with a tan head. Cola nose and wintergreen. Flavors same with some hints of chocolate. Medium bodied, high carbonation.
3.3 Bottled. Very dark por, beige head and sone laceinbg. Roasted malt and blackberry licorice aroma. Taste is cherries, berries, herbs and chocolate. Not great balance. Was unable to finish - the berries/licorice was too cloying.
3.0 Malzig würziger, deutlich oxidierter Antrunk. Dunkel getreidig, minimaler verblasster Hopen. Süß, fast etwas zuckrig, Vergoren fruchtig, passend trocken. Weiche Moccanoten, zu keinerzeit auch nur annähernd alkoholisch. Ein sehr eigenes Bier, das, obwohl noch nicht sehr alt und viel Alkohol, möglicherweise seine besten Tage schon hinter sich hat. 7/10/10/8/6/10
3.7 330ml bottle. Quasi black colour with a red glow, average to huge, firm, frothy to creamy, fairly lasting, moderately lacing, ochre-beige head. Sweet-ish fruity, hoppy aroma has notes of red fruit jelly (Rote Grütze), blueberry, bramble, woodruff highlights. Taste is fruity hoppy, notes of blueberry and bramble, additionally woodruff and peppermint. Very well hidden alcohol, seemingly light; can’t detect any chocolate.
4.2 Dark brown with a brownish head. Aroma: licorice, sweet, ... Taste: Chocolate, roasted malt, mocha
3.1 Aroma: Strong, not very pleasant. Taste: Hints of menthol. Creamy. Smooth chocolately finish.
3.8 Black body, light brown head. Aroma has chocolate, wine, dark fruits, medicinal hops. Woody and bourbon like notes. Sweet chocolate mocca flavour. Balanced aftertaste. Cinnamon. Velvety smooth and full.
3.0 Dark, black with a thick brown head. Nose: soapy, coffee, malt, slightly roasted. Soapy part kills the beer. Taste: tobback, roasted, coffee, than something washy, soapy in the taste too (spices, mint??). Finish is bitter, but with a sweet touch, very alcoholic. This beer is a day job to get through. but too much, too strong for me.
3.7 from bottle. dark dark brown colour with a creamy tan head. poured with a lot! of yeast. nice to see that the hop smell is gone. lot of sweet toffee, caramel, chocolate, figgs, some sweet raisins, better to leave the last bits in the bottle.
3.6 Bottle at Molenhof. Fruity, spicy nose, cola, apple, licorice, cherry. Tastes like a big, strong, sweet Coke. Tangy fruit, super sweet, licorice, coffee. Not my thing really, but flavorful.
3.6 330 ml bottle. L 01/01/2011. BB 01/02/2016. From bierkompass.de. Black colour with a small creamy tan head. Herbs, chocolate, sweetness, port wine, mild medicine and cookies in the aroma. The flavour is bitterness, whiskey (?), sweetness, alcohol, spices and malt. Not very balanced. Slightly disappointing after the delicious aroma.
3.7 Bottle from the Struise bottle shop in Brugge. Interesting beer, the taste and smell reminds me of coke or pepsi. It has a slight taste and smell of mint. Besides that some roasted malts. Fairly easy to drink despite the ABV. This bottle was bought in 2011 so it didn’t have much of any hops left.
3.9 Powerful beer that can indeed best be described as a mixture between a strong Belgian dark beer and a black IPA. Nice as always.
