Struise XXX Rye Quad Reserva (Bourbon Barrel Aged)

Struise XXX Rye Quad Reserva (Bourbon Barrel Aged)

Up until 2013 the label always mentioned "Triple", as from 2014 (release: 2015) the word "Triple" on the label has been changed to "Quad".

Story 1: This has always been a quadrupel, but the label designer was confused by the 3 X’s and had therefore changed the name to triple, thinking it was a mistake. (source: Facebook)

Story 2: When brewed at Deca, the beer turned out a bit lighter in colour, so they called it a triple. Now that it’s brewed at the Struise’s own facilities, it’s more darker in colour and they call it a quad. (source: Carlo)

Either way, it’s still the same recipe and should be treated as such.

4.2 2014 bottle. Deep red chestnut with a claret shine, dark brown foam. Complex sugar aromatics, dry melanoidin, juicy caramel, candied berries, a hint soy. Medium full body, lightly sticky sugars, caramel, berry, corn sweetness, mellowed rye edges, light wood tannins. Very broad on the palate, light sparkly. Satisfying pleasant to drink rich nightcap - seems like this might be the optimal age to drink it in.
3.8 De struise bourbon barrel aged reserva 2013 10% Shared by Kobe Brewer it is a purplish-brown color with a wispy beige head. The aroma is sweet maple with a bit of boozy sharpness and some oak. 4.1 Bottle, 2013 version. Pours brown with medium beige head. Aroma is fruity, full, smooth, dried fruits, raisin, some wine. Taste is rich, fruity, some barrels, wine, roast, some caramel and toffee, balanced. Very good beer!
3.4 Suszone owoce, chlebek, karmel, nieco alkoholu. Średnio pełne, niezbyt słodkie, pozostawia trochę cierpki posmak. Bardzo wysokie wysycenie, średnia goryczka. Aromat super, smak mniej super.
4.1 Poors dark brown, negligible head. Aroma candi sugar, dried plums, subtle to decent amount of whiskey, vanilla. Taste the other way around: less candi sugar, more whiskey, loads of vanilla, soft. Taste of decent strength but especially with good balance between the candi sugar, the quad-like plums and the whiskey barrel tastes. Soft: no disturbing alcohol or carbonation. Well made: not a brute, overpowering taste, just great in it's elegance.
3.7 at home together with yves dark brown colored body with an off white head and with a roasted malt alcholic caramel chocolat aroma a malt hop coffee sweet chocolat caramel alcholic bitter taste with an alcholic bitter finish
3.4 Shared with Wim at his home. Light brown colored beer with small white head and no carbonation. Malty spiced aroma. Full sparkling palate. Finish is bitter malty sweet.
4.1 Draught, 8 yr old barrel Good pinkish-cream head over red-amber clear beer. Superb alcoholic nose, fusels, red fruit, other grains, old winecasks. Sweetish, cashew-like sweetness, vinous, caramel. Very thick, slick, alcoholheat, medium carbonation. Excellent strong ale, just the finish is a bit empty (the age?).
4.1 Shared bottle at RB/HD at Askje 13.10.18. 2013 vintage. Clear pale copper. Fairly persistent beige head and lacing. Fine aroma and taste of ripe plums, figs, oak, dried berries and dates. Sweet and good!
4.0 RBHD-treff på Mosterøy. 0,33 l flaske. Klar dyp kobberfarget kropp med tett beige lavt skum. Innbydende bourbon og quadruppel aroma med karamell. Kraftig søt med kandissukker tydelig. God alkovarme.
3.7 Shared bottle at local tasting. Pours hazy dark brown with a small creamy tan head. Aroma is strong malty, oak . Taste is smooth and creamy dark malts, some notes of bourbon and booze, long dry boozy finish
3.8 Shared 330 ml bottle. Brown colour, off-white head. Nice aroma of bourbon, oak and vanilla, also brown kandij sugar. Rich and sweet flavour, with the same elements as in the aroma.
4.1 0,33 flaske på RBHD-samling hos Asle Bjørn, okt-18: vakker rødlig kobber med fint skum sm varer. Tørkede frukter, sviskeplommer, sherry, bourbon, molasse/brunsukker, hint av lakris. Farlig god og farlig lettdrikkelig.
4.1 27 September 2018. Birthday Antwerp Pub Crawl - cheers to Anke! At Kulminator. Pours clear dark amber-brown with a lasting, small, frothy, tan head; some lacing. Intense aroma of raisin, caramel, brioche, (liquor-soaked) cherry, leather, peanut, plum, bourbon & rum. Taste is medium, almost heavy fruity sweet, hints of raisin & plum, a bit (sweet) bready, light sour notes of sherry & oak; light spicy & herbal bitter. Dryish, earthy & herbal hoppy finish, sherry & wood notes, lingering sour fruit, warming sherry/brandy alcohol. Full body, slick to oily texture, fizzy carbonation. Unusual Abt, quite hard to put your finger on; good stuff from Struise.
3.4 Brun sombre, trouble, mousse correcte.
3.7 (bottle, 75cl, vintage 2012) Hazy, dark amber coloured hue with floaties and a firm medium-sized tanned foamy head. Yeasty, slightly sugary malty and slightly berry-fruity vinous aroma with notes of caramel and cacao, backed by an oaky, woody touch, including hints of vanilla. Moderately sweet and delicately bitter flavour, full bodied with a well-carbonated mouthfeel. Dark malt character with notes of caramel, chocolate, dried fruits and oaky notes of vanilla; sweet and rounded bitter finish with vinous fruity notes and a well-hidden but nevertheless warming alcoholic strength. A very complex brew. 26.III.14
3.9 Piana drobna, trwała, zdobi szkło. Kolor herbaciany, mętny z farfoclami. Aromat suszone owoce, słody, karmel, przyjemny. Smak ponownie suszone i świeże czerwone owoce, guma balonowa, słody, karmel, beczka wyczuwalna minimalnie, alkohol wyczuwalny delikatnie szlachetnie. Całość Bardzo Dobra
3.1 Dark brown with a small head. Flavor is ok, dark fruits, malty, some booze. Light body, malty, some bourbon. Ok but really not that interesting and not very complex.
4.0 From La tienda de la cerveza. In Teku glass. Playing Avernum 2. Typical flavors of the style (dark fruits, raisins) with a body that feels lighter and more smooth than usual.Abv and bourbon totally hidden
4.5 One of my favourite beers of all time. Very intense dried fruit flavours, notes of chocolate and defintely the feel of bourbon.
3.9 2014 0,33l bottle, bb 09.09.20 Aroma is dark dried fruit, a lot of Pumpernickel and some bourbon. Taste is raisins, again Pumpernickel, caramel and a lot of residual sweetness. Nicely balanced beer not to bourbon forward as many other bourbon barrel aged beets but I'm missing the complexity of a lot of other Belgian beers.
3.4 Bottle a brown colored beer with a white-off head aroma malts oak dried fruits caramel yeast oak spicy porto and hops flavor malts dried fruits caramel spicy oak alcohol whisky and some hops
4.0 W aromacie pełno bourbonu, rodzynki, suszone owoce. Wszystko to uzupełnia delikatna słodycz. Smak to poezja. Karmel, rodzynki, figi, beczka, bourbon. Podbija to wszystko nutka chleba. Momentami przypomina kwas chlebowy.
3.9 Bottle.Dark brown colour with almost no head.Aroma of bourbon and vanilla good full body and strong warming mouthfeels, but still nie and well balanced hint of dark dried fruits and caramel, slight sweet but nice.
3.9 Keg at Struise beer shop in Brugge, Belgium. A dark brown/black coloured pour with a thin beige head on top. Aroma of bourbon, caramel, rum, dark fruit. Tastes the same, bourbon, caramel, rum, hint of vanilla, dark fruit, sweet
3.8 330 ml. bottle. Pours a dark reddish brown with a decent beige head. Aroma of caramel, fruit, and bourbon. Taste is caramel malt, dark fruit, vanilla, and bourbon. Very nice to sip on.
4.6 Purchased as part of the IBC Platinum Pack. Damn happy I stumbled across this place. Poured slowly. Dark reddish black in colour with small creamy head. Aromas if dark stone fruits, wet cedar, toffee and caramel. Taste of coffee toffee caramel quite sweet but exactly what I like. The bourbon comes through subtly at the end. Low carbonation but pretty sure I’ve found the ultimate beer. 3/4 way though and 1/2 pissed. Winning on all levels. It wins.
