Summit Horizon Red IPA

Summit Horizon Red IPA

An inspired hybrid that blurs the boundaries between IPA and Amber styles. The exceptional blend of American hops (including the harder-to-find Horizon variety) gives it an intense pine, citrus and earthy character in the nose and on the tongue.

3.0 Brown amber, tan head and lacing. Pine, grapefruit, and subtle coffee notes. Not quite an IPA ...something missing. $1.99/12oz bottle at Total Wine and More, Boca Raton Florida
3.4 Bottle - Pours a clear amber/copper with a fairly large, creamy head and some lacing. Aromas of sweet citrus, grapefruit and pine. Taste has grapefruit and semi-sweet malts. I would like more of a sweet amber and IPA bitterness, but I like it overall.
3.3 Transfer from BA review on 8-22-12 - Poured from bottle into pint glass Appearance – Pours a nice garnet color with a big off-white colored thick head. The head has fantastic retention but eventually fades to give great level of lacing. Smell – The aroma is light but consists of a toasted malt aroma with some lighter caramel notes. Taste –The taste begins with a roasted malt flavor with an ever so light sweetness. As the taste goes on, hop flavors begins slowly coming into the taste. They start out of a pine nature and are relatively light in the beginning and the middle. As the taste advanced further however a stronger hop bitterness of a earthy and pine nature comes to taste and brings the flavor profile to an end. Mouthfeel – The thickness is on the average side as well as the carbonation. The carbonation level is very fitting although a little more creaminess may have helped with the somewhat harsh flavor left on the tongue at the end of the taste. Overall – Relatively hoppy and flavorful amber-red beer, but nothing that is worth going out of the way for.
3.3 Bottle at home pours a golden amber with a thin tan head. Aroma is pine. Flavor is strongly pine with some floral. Slight caramel. Medium bodied. Very nice beer. Earlier Rating: 5/30/2014 Total Score: 3.1 Pours copper brownish. Two fingers of white foam. Aroma is slight pine but fairly subdued. Hops explode in the flavor though. Slight maltiness but mostly just lots of hops. Cascade? Nice beer. Finishes somewhat dry.
3.3 12oz bottle. Pours Jatoba, white head. Aroma’s grass citrus, taste is crisp, bit of malt. Not bad.
3.4 Pours a clear burgundy with average head and lacing. Hints of caramel and toffee on the nose. Malty, a little bready, slightly bitter, with notes of caramel and brown sugar. A very drinkable red IPA.
3.2 Bottle. Light toffee malt and orange peel aroma. Reddish brown with giant light tan head. Mildly sweet toffee malt and moderately bitter metallic orange peel flavor. Okay but basic.
3.2 Poured from 12oz bottle, dig the fact most of these 6 packs are $6 a piece, pours a clear dark reddish brown with an off white head and spotty lacing in the glass, aroma has a nice citrus touch with a lot of caramel and malt as well, works together though, the flavor has a citrus front end with more of the sweetness in the finish, kind of boring through as it gets muddled, not terrible.
3.1 An interesting brew, my first red IPA. Pours a deep copper red with a medium white head. Aroma is metallic hops. Taste is pine, hops & subtle spice. Finishes clean.
3.4 Thanks cards04 for this. Faint hop aroma. Dark red body. Taste is hoppy nice. Decent IPA
3.5 A really solid IPA. Pours brownish red with spotty lacing and white head. Aromas are dank, toasted grains, caramel. Flavors are roasted grain, citrus, pine. Nice sweet malty backbone. Well balanced. Very nice.
3.5 Poured from bottle....pours dark with red tint and minimal head....very light lacing....nose is very very piney....mouth is hops and citrus....tastey stuff!
3.8 355ml bottle as "Horizon Red Ale". Mad that I have an older bottle but the label change wasn’t that old. Dark red pour, creamy thick head that sticks. Surprisingly the aroma is still here so this must have been right at the cut off. The smell is intense citrus, tropical fruits, melon, mango, passionfruit, grapefruit., resin, pine. Real complex. The flavor is dry, slightly pithy, fruity, piney notes, some herbs, backing malt but not too much, medium bitterness. Can’t wait to try it fresh.
3.3 On tap at Milwaukee Brew Fest 2013. Pour is pale orange with a small off-white head. Aroma of floral and citrus hops. Flavor is also hoppy but more balanced towards caramel and toasted malts. Finish is a bit acidic.
3.4 on guest tap at the Hourglass Brewery. Dark amber in color with a small frothy off-white head. Aroma is mostly of caramel malt. Medium bodied with creamy mouthfeel. Lightly sweet and moderately bitter. Quite hoppy and an absolute winner if you enjoy hoppy beers.
3.4 Pours mahogany brown with small head that disappears quickly. Nose is interesting - malty with a touch of soir fruit or the inside of a wood chest. Taste bright and lightly hoppy. Dissipates quickly on the palate. Could drink two at a time.
3.0 good beer, nice clean flavor and aroma and palate. too sweet for my beer taste though
3.2 Rated on 5-30-2009 (Bottle) When poured, this beer forms a small off-white head, transparent golden body, very little lacing, and visible carbonation. The Aroma is caramel malt along with pine and citrus hops. The Taste is mildly bitter, caramel malt and pine and citrus hops. The Palate is tingly and this beer is medium bodied. Overall, the hops dominate in this beer which makes it a bit too hoppy for my liking. This is a beer that I more than likely will not drink again due to the hoppiness.
3.3 Bottle. Pours a red color with white head. Grassy, piney hops mixed with caramel malt aromas. Whereas the hops are a little more dominant in the aroma, the caramel malt and sweetness are more dominant in the flavor. I wished it tasted like the aroma.
3.1 Bottle. Poured an unfiltered copper color with a thin cream top. Taste of grass, spruce, herbs, caramel malts. Medium carbonation, medium body.
3.2 Bottle to snifter (shared with the Mrs.). Looks good for the style; a hazy amber with off-white head that dissipates into lacing. Smells and tastes sweet and malty with notes of caramel and hops. Average on the palate. Decent, but forgettable.
3.1 Gift from Mike King. Amber color thin white head. Faint citrus floral hop aroma. Well balanced between hops and malt although hops take the lead in the finish with an astringent bite. decent flavor profile, easy drinking.
3.6 12oz bottle from variety pack - pours pale brown with offwhite head and decent lacing. Nose is pine, tobacco, and floral. Flavor adds grass and toast. Almost complex flavors. light-medium to medium bitterness with light sweetness. Not as bitter as I would expect from an Amber Ale. light to medium light body. better than I expected.
3.7 Sample at Suds on the Shore festival. Reddish amber pour with a white head. Nice light floral hops throughout for a good dry finish.
3.1 Sweet syrupy bitter taste. Red brown pour. Average. Had at crust in Dubuque. The bitterness is a bit much for the style
3.5 On tap at MSP airport. Pours a clear deep red with a tan head that dissipates slowly to the edges and laces. Aroma has a good combination of pine hops and bread with a touch of grapefruit. Flavor has pine with a touch of onion with a bread backbone and hint of grapefruit.
3.7 12 ounce bottle into pint glass, best before 3/11/2013. Pours moderately cloudy reddish copper color with a 1-2 finger dense cream colored head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Nice soapy lacing clings down the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of caramel, grapefruit, orange zest, floral, pine, toast, biscuit, brown sugar, and floral earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance of malt and hop notes; with decent strength. Taste of caramel, orange zest, grapefruit, floral, pine, grass, biscuit, brown sugar, and floral earthiness. Fair amount of pine bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of caramel, citrus, citrus zest, floral, pine, grass, biscuit, brown sugar, and floral earthiness on the finish for a short bit. Nice balance and complexity of hop and malt flavors; with a hop forward flavor balance and no cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a fairly creamy, sticky, and crisp mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with no warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is a nice red ale. Good balance and complexity of hop and malt notes; and very smooth to drink. A nicely enjoyable offering.
3.9 Draft at brewery. Nice sweet hoppy aroma with a hint of roasted malt. Clear dark amber body with beautiful off white sheet lace. Plenty of hops in the flavor. Really nice balance. Forgot how much I like this. Way better than EPA.
2.9 Pleasant caramel nose. Nice maltiness mixed with subtle hoppiness . Nice sweet mouth feel. Finish was long and really bitter. Just not a tasty finish and ruined experience for me
3.9 Poured from a 12oz. bottle to tulip. As a Minneapolis native I’ve had the opportunity to taste a great deal of Summit’s offerings. The Horizon Ale now becomes one I will seek out with relish. I found the aroma to be quite intriguing. There is a rich earthy hop aroma followed with hints of toffee, prune and some citrus. The appearance is of a rich cherry wood with a creamy tan head that last. The lacing is sticky and consistent in the glass. Full disclosure I am a hophead, but do enjoy many styles of brew. The hops in this one are very nice. They make their presence know through out the swallow and linger during the delightful aftertaste. The malt is there in good stead nutty and light caramel or toffee. I don’t know all the parameters of the red ale style but I think this would have a wide appeal to anyone who likes Brown Ale, Porter or IPAs. It seems to interplay well within all those styles. It certainly provides a better hop experience than many IPAs i’ve enjoyed. The beer stands in a very nice area of being sessionable or a relaxing sipper. Perhaps it’s best feature is how well it would pair with a great variety of foods. From lamb to BBQ to a nice sharp cheese or even something with a tangy sauce..I think this would be an excellent choice. Try it and Enjoy.
