Surly Abrasive Ale

Surly Abrasive Ale

Sure we’re abrasive. We were abrasive long before we were Surly. If you visit the brewery you can still see remnants of the industrial manufacturing factory Omar’s parents ran for 35 years within those same 4 walls. Bandsaw blades, grinding wheels, and sanding discs came long before ales and lagers. But let’s be honest, this is a lot more fun. Pale in color, this over-hopped, under-brewed Double IPA has almost twice the amount of hops & malt crammed in the can. Seasonal between March and April.

3.8 Barwa ciemno pomarańczowa, piana duża. Aromat mocno cytrusowy z lekkimi tropikami. W smaku cytrusowe, kwiatowe, lekko sosnowe. Fajne pifko.
4.1 Tropical aroma from the citra hops that contains pineapple, nectarine and orange. Very nice looking, dark for the style with a cream colored head. Taste follows the aroma, fruit forward with a little orange rind bitterness at the end. Excellent palate. Lives up to the reputation.
3.8 Draft at brewery. Pours golden with a white head. Leaves some lacing in the glass. It’s that classic DIPA combo of big pine and a big malt backbone so that’s is alternately sweet and super bitter. Never change Surly!
3.9 Aroma of fresh pine and fresh citrus. Nice hazy golden color with a huge white fluffy head. Some sweet malt up front... quickly engulfed by piney citrus bitterness. Bitterness ramps up in a good way towards the end. Medium mouth feel. Boozy burn at the end. Heavy hitter.
Hossa!!! Brachial, voluminös und wahrhaftig drybitterpiney!! Tropical, lupufresh und immer auch der BronzeBro!!! Applaus!!! Was will ich mehr??? :)....Scottieeeee!!!! YESSSS!!! 💋❤
4.2 Brig floral hop aroma. Pours golden with a white head. Big floral hop flavor...hits the cheeks wth a bite, medium malt body, lingers forever. Notes: on tap at the brewery, Super Bowl weekend ‘18.
3.7 Aroma is pine and big nutty hops. The flavor is citrus, grapefruit, malts and a mix of nutty hops and a slight alcohol burn in the finish.
4.1 Golden yellow pour. Sweet tropical fruit aroma. Taste is pine and more tropical fruits. Strong bitter finish. Very nice
4.2 Light gold. Pineapple mango bigly. Light sweet caramel malts. Dang.Cant believe it's a 9er.
4.0 Drank an older can but still really good. Spicy and fruity. Strong malt backbone and ballanced bitter. Sweet spicy bitter complex and delicious.
4.0 Beautiful golden pour without much foam. Clean citrus hops, resinous and piney. Tastes herbal bitter and is superbly balanced. Not too long herbal bitter finish. 9% is nowhere to be seen, feels really sessionable.
3.6 Pours gold with a thick white head. Aroma is citrusy but not as strong as I was expecting. Slight citrus and pine notes with a slight bitterness that doesn’t stick around long. Overall a really easy beer to drink.
4.5 Tasted from can. Pours a slight hazy orange with white head. Aroma is tropical and citrus fruits with some floral notes. Taste is pretty in your face bitter. Flavors of orange, resin, pine, grapefruit, passion fruit, floral notes. Huge bitter IPA. Very well done.
4.1 On tap at brewpub Having never tried this before surprised me when it was delivered to the table. Despite an odd pairing choice that it completely swamped I enjoyed this excellent imperial IPA. As long as it sticks to its roots I can’t see it ever being completely edged out of the market - especially with what the Surly brand has become. Aroma / Appearance - A golden bronze base packs the punch you would expect. Walloping the nose with nothing short of pure weapons grade hops it scours the sinuses clean with zero attempt at subtlety. If big massive IPAs are your thing this delivers in spades. Flavor / Palate - Lemon custard, zest, and an urgent bitter sensation gnaw at the palate like gritty sandpaper. It manages to build even after you think there’s no way for it to become more intense. The expertise to stop just short of total fatigue demonstrates a deft touch that is the only subtle thing about this world class imperial IPA.
4.0 Big IPA. Would prefer one more balanced. But this is good. Plenty of bitter. Long bitter finish.
3.4 Can. A- Guava, mango, apricot, tropical fruits, pine. A- Orange color, hazy liquid, white head. T- Bitter, grassy, pine, tropical citrus, caramel. P- Full body, average texture, average carbonation, bitter finish. O- Definitely not as aggressive as I expected. Actually, quite balanced and drinkable. Lots of tropical fruits on the nose. 6 months old but I kinda liked it.
4.2 16 oz can pours orange with white head and some lacing smell is hop than citrus, flavor is very hoppy but i love that.
4.2 Thanks Virby44 for the can! Poured into a snifter showing moderately filtered orange with sparse white foam. The nose shows a big intense mix of cannabis and guava with light hints of pineapple and mango. The palate is medium bodied and lightly carbonated. Juicy fruit forward flavors of mango and peach with hints of cannabis. Light malt backbone to support it all. Light bitterness on the finish. Resurgence shows the same fruit flavors with the malts reappearing in a slight adzuki sweetness. Wow, this is really good.
3.8 16 oz can shared by ebone1988. The pour is a darker golden orange color with a thin ring of light tan head and a couple spots of lace. The aroma is bitter and heavy on the hops. The malts are a little sweeter, but it’s surprisingly balanced and nice. The flavor is a little malty for my liking. There is a nice bitter resinous hop, but there is a resounding sweetness and a strong malt on the back end. The mouth feel is thicker and a little syrupy with a nice carbonation and a lingeringly bitter hop finish. It’s an interesting beer, that’s for sure.
4.0 Aroma is nice, citrus, pine, tropical fruit, not juicy but not malty. Appearance is golden amber, off white head, hazy. Taste is citrus, pine, floral, tropical fruit, slight wheat. Mouthfeel is light to medium body, light crisp carbonation, dank pine citrus aftertaste. Overall, very very solid.
4.0 Pours a bubbly, carbonated looking golden with a medium white head that settles slowly. The aroma has grapefruit, pineapple, orange, peach, and pine, with all impressions being about equal in strength. The taste is a little sweet and has some mild bitterness. Grapefruit and orange stand out most here. Additionally, I find pine, herbal hops, some resin, and pineapple. There is a short aftertaste of pineapple. Its medium in body, sticky in texture, and lots of carbonation in here. This one is very good.
4.1 Super nice ale. You can taste a bit of caramel and citrus in this. Not real hoppy but a tad more than I prefer. Definitely an alcohol aftertaste but nothing the would put you off.
4.9 About goddamn time this showed up in my state. The can shows a disembodied hand operating a sander and casting sparks. That’s more or less the effect this beer has on your palate. It pours pale orange. The hop aromatics are citrusy, piney, malty, and floral. The caramel malt holds the resinous hops at bay until it gives out at the end. Pineapple, orange, grapefruit, lemon, and pine needle flavors. Things don’t get truly Abrasive until the finish. That’s when the full force of the 120 IBU’s hit you. This is just the sort of masochism that I like.
4.3 Tap a sugar maple in Milwaukee Pours bright orange hue with a small soapy white head and awesome lacing. Nose is huge c hops pineapple and grapefruit. Just perfect. Huge grapefruit rinds bitterness. Just fsntastic. Big slick body lush and somewhat oily. Long fresh hops and big citric finish. Just fantastic.
3.9 Draught. Pours a cloudy orange with a fading fluffy off white head. Aroma is of orange, grapefruit, caramel, citrus. Taste is of grapefruit, citrus, caramel, resinous pine. Oily mouthfeel, medium carbonation.
4.3 Can; pours orange gold with a white head; nice tropical fruit aroma with hints of caramel, malt, and some pine hints; taste is bitter with tropical fruits upfront with some hints of caramel, pine, and malt; finish is fruity bitter and slightly dry
3.9 16oz can. Pours a semi-translucent yellow gold with a lightly frothy white head; the head dissipates to about 3mm and leaves mildly sticky lacing on the glass. The aroma features an overall resinous quality marked by citrus/grapefruit notes and a touch of dank wood. The taste is quite bitter, with some of the resinous/dank qualities of the nose cutting through with just a touch of citrus and wood. The lingering aftertaste continues the overall resinous/dank theme, and the finish is somewhat dry. Lightly carbonated texture with a somewhat thick and oily mouthfeel... not boozy but definitely a sipper to be savored.
3.9 Tulip at The Maproom. . Good aroma. Bitter sweet aroma, strong on pine and grapefruit, on the red side. Clean light brownish orange color, good head and lace. Bitter sweet flavor. Medium body oily creamy mouthfeel, BITTER finish. Very good IIPA strong aroma and finish. Solid in all areas.
3.7 From notes (11/17/15). Big, bitter, malty. Yup, it lives up to its name. I thought it was a little too piney and assertively bitter to rival some of the great DIPAs, but it was cool to try.
3.9 Can poured into a snifter..orange/copper with a fluffy white head..aroma of grapefruit,pine,caramel..tastes like it smells..medium body..good stuff.
