Surly Overrated West Coast Style IPA
It’s been said; "It’s easier to brew an extremely hoppy beer than an extremely balanced beer." And you know us, we are always looking for the easy way out, so we jumped on the West Coast IPA bandwagon and brewed this dry and hoppy ale. "Surly’s a little bit of a one-trick pony, they just brew gimmick beers," and maybe we are OVERRATED, but at the end of the day, it’s just a beer. If you like it, great, so do we. If you only liked us when we were small, then leave this one on the shelf. Let one of the fanboys grab it.

Out of a can. Pours golden tan with white head. Scent is very piney. Flavor is intensely hoppy. A crisp finish leaves a bitter aftertaste.
Minneapolis, Mn - on tap at Surly Brewing. Slight sparkle to the medium golden pour, bubbly white head. Pineapple, spruce, cat urine in the fragrant aroma. Flavor presents some citrus bitterness, a touch of pineapple fruitiness, hint of caramel. Thick rich luxurious mouthfeel.
pours a murky rich gold with a generous bubbly white head. citrus hop aroma. bright citrus hop taste. Not overly bitter. Pleasant bitter-sweetish linger. Good beer!
Pint Can - Pours butterscotch copper, soft, frothy head. Citrus, slightly sweet aroma, hint of vanilla. Taste - tropical fruit, vanilla, dry finish. Palate is the standout feature... creamy for an APA, balanced, substantial (not heavy), clean, clear, bright. Overall - doesn’t astonish but the balance of tropical and dry, and great palate gets very comfortable, very fast
Copper pour with decent white head. Nose of citrus and pine. Flavor is big on grapefruit and orange. Bitter to the end.
Tasted from can. Pours a hazy orange with thick white head. Aroma is citrus forward with grapefruit, lemon also some pineapple and mango. Taste is moderate to heavily bitter. Some citrus flavor but more pine and resin along with some caramel. Overall a very nice bitter west coast style IPA.
Can. A semi-cloudy golden beer with some sediments and a medium size frothy head. Aroma is of caramel, malt and some floral hints. Taste is medium
bitter with some sweetness. Medium bodied with fizzy carbonation.
Can. Sparkling golden with a large creamy tan head and visible sediment. Aromas of floral hops, grass, caramel, resin. Medium bodied, soft fizzy carbonation. Medium to heavy sweet, medium bitter. Juicy hoppy and strong malty flavors.
Not a bad beer by any other standard but is my least favorite surly a little over carbonated and slightly empty flavor profile
Finally got around to trying this, caramel, grass, spruce, dough, almost tobacco too for some reason. really authentic nice tasting hops coming through. not too bitter either really, but that might just be from just previously drinking a double. I am definitely a fan.
Got in a trade with The-Adjunct-Hippie. 16 ounce can into tulip glass, canned on 7/7/2016. Pours hazy golden amber/light orange color with a 2 finger dense and rocky off white head with fantastic retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lasts. Nice dense soapy lacing clings on the glass. Aromas of big grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, peach, apricot, mango, melon, lemon zest, orange peel, pine, honey, light caramel, biscuit, and floral/grassy earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of bright citrus/fruity/piney hops and moderate pale malt notes; with great strength. Taste of big grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, peach, apricot, mango, melon, lemon zest, orange peel, pine, honey, light caramel, biscuit, and floral/grassy earthiness. Moderate pine/citrus rind/grassy bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, peach, apricot, mango, melon, lemon/orange rind, pine, honey, biscuit, and floral/grassy earthiness on the finish for a while. Great complexity, robustness, and balance of bright citrus/fruity/piney hops and moderate pale malt flavors; with a nice malt/bitterness balance, and minimal lingering hop astringency after the finish. Moderate dryness from bitterness, increasing through the glass. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, sticky/resinous, and fairly grainy/bready balanced mouthfeel that is nice. Zero warming alcohol for 7.3%. Overall this is a great IPA. All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of bright citrus/fruity/piney hops and moderate pale malt flavors; very smooth and easy to drink; despite fairly aggressive bitterness and resinous dryness. Neither were overwhelming. A very enjoyable offering.
Tallboy can from Whole Foods Wauwatosa, 8/19/16. Hazy orange, large foamy white head, good retention. Aroma of grapefruit, pith, pale malt, a bit of tropical fruit. The taste is grapefruit, pale malt. Medium bodied, simple, well balanced. Nice beer.
Can. Pours cloudy orange. The palate is juicy wet and sticky. The taste is hops. Fruity and a piney dry aftertaste. Decent IPA
Can at craig?s. Pours golden orange, nose is toffee, citrus, taste is sweet, bitter citrus, juicy.
did not like at all. Tall can from Binnys. Very sweet and thick. Cloying sweetness that takes over. Light bitterness in finish.
Can from Ernesto. Amber color with frothy head. Aroma is candied orange, light resin, and grass. Taste is a bit bitter but otherwise nice and hoppy with citrus everywhere. Good beer.

Slightly cloudy golden color with a medium size foamy white head.
Fruity and piney hops, mild sweetness, moderate bitterness, dryness and malt in the aroma.
The flavor is pungent piney and resiny hoppy with strong bitterness, some grapefruit and sweetish malt. Probably not overrated.
Clear gold thick pillowy head. Nose of caramel malts, pine, grapefruit. Taste is fairly bitter on a pretty rich malt body but hops cut any sweetness from getting out of hand. Good west coaster. I bet I previously rated Furious higher but I prefer this over the one I had the other day.
16 oz can, canned on 9/8/16. A bit of a gusher. Pours slightly hazy copper gold with a big rocky white head that retains fairly well and laces the glass a little.
The aroma is subdued - sweet perfumey biscuity malt and grassy hops.
The flavor is sweet biscuity malt with some fruit and grassy resiny bitter hops in the finish. The mouthfeel is medium bodied and slightly watery.
Overall, an OK IPA.
Another american IPA but I sure do enjoy it. Can sit down and have a few of these bad boys before the hops start to get to ya.
On tap @ Surly. Pours hazy medium golden with thin lacy white head. Aroma is bright juicy hops, pine and mango notes stand out. Taste is sweet light caramel malt, bitter but juicy hops, great citrus flavor. Did not have them side by side, but by recollection I liked this better than Furious or Todd.
Aroma of hops is obvious. Hazy with a color of straw. Very beautiful head with a nice lace. Hoppy flavor is very strong and covers the sweetness of malt.. But later you can tell the malty flavor, a sense of sweetness comes. Dry finish,carbonation is moderate.
Tropical fruits, light passion fruit, some floral hops, light pine. Clear gold, medium, creamy, white head. Light bitter. Citrus fruits, more floral hops, grassy, turning quite bitter in the finish, lively carbonation. Decent IPA, quite bitter in the taste. Can at the brewery, Minneapolis.
The description for this beer is utterly retarded. But I guess that was the intention. Well played, Mr. Brewer. That said, this is a good IPA, and may say West Coast Style on the can, but it struggles in this style category to be outstanding. Smells nice, pours nice, tastes nice.
Dark amber in color, frothy head, fruity scent with a little pine. Easy palate yet bitter in taste.
Pounder: Honeycomb, soil, caramel, pine needle nose, some ash. Hazy amber, medium yellow head. Honey and lemon, tea and lemongrass highlights. Medium body, soft carbonation. Nice malt bill and tasty beer, but it’s way more like the mythical east coast style IPA than west coast style.
On tap at the brewery. Yellow pour with a white head. Citrusy hop bouquet. Taste follows suit. Well balanced and easy sipping. Loads of caramel malts smoothness.
I thought this would be far more piney than it is, but its mostly citrus hops. Pours clear orange, thick wheat head, sweet bready base.
Sample from can. Pours golden, off white head. Aroma was hops, grapefruit. Taste was grassy and bitter.
Tap at the source. Pours clear honey, white head. Aroma is citrus, mango, pineapple, dank. Really nice. Flavor is sweet tropical fruits. Mango, pineapple, grapefruit. Dank, but still sweet. A really classic West coast style ipa.
