3.4 Surly can call it an extra pale ale, or try and sell it as an "Americanized English-style Bitter", but what they've got is a Citra-bomb Session IPA through and through. Not a bad thing, mind you, but nothing that swerves greatly from the stylistic definition (and limitations) of a low-ABV IPA. Tons of grapefruit, lemon, and passionfruit, backed up by hits of pith and pine, with a crisp, clean finish accented by lingering citrus. I really dig the front half, wind up disappointed as the fade turns indistinct and dull. Summer-day hangin'-with-friends doin'-something-fun beer for sure, but not one I'd seek out otherwise.
3.2 Light hazy tan/orange pour, quickly dissipating white head. Aroma is light and has some earthy tones, along with bright citrus, pollen, and pineapple. Average carbonation, creamy mouthfeel, really clean finish. Flavor has strong bright citrus, pollen and pineapple, along with biscuity and slightly nutty malts. Really complex for low ABV IPA. New go-to for sessioning.
3.7 6 pack from Downing Liquors. Here's a beer under the wrong category on this site. This is not an English pale ale. There's no British hop character since evidently this is all Citra and so many modern American pale ales/IPAs are using British yeast anyway. This beer is as Surly advertised though. Tons and tons of grapefruit are imparted by the generous usage of Citra. The malt body is pretty light but still noticeably bready. Bitterness is medium low for the style but still a little present. If you like this hop, this is your beer. I had no problem putting down a few of these refreshers.
3.7 Can at the Ace Hotel in Chicago Clear, pale, minimal malt character with a ton of citra up in your face. British style maybe, but swept away by the citra and so unlike anything from Britain that I've ever experienced. Good for a hop blast without enormous ibus or high ABV. But rather one-dimensional.
3.7 Hazy medium yellow, thin head. Nose tropical and citrus. Middle is the same, tropical, medium kilned malt, touch citrus bitterness. Finish is lightly bitter and fruity.
3.0 Citrusy, not too bitter but too much yeasty aftertaste
3.1 Pale gold pour, foamy white head. Lemon, grass, biscuity malts, some light spiciness. Not bad and nice bitterness but a bit thin and not much aroma.
3.4 On tap. It poured a hazy orange color with a white head. The aroma was of citrus, tropical fruits and hops. The taste was similar to the aroma with more citrus, tropical fruits, hops, malts with medium carbonation and a nice smooth aftertaste. Tasty.
2.9 Can. Pale golden with one finger head. Very thin body, reasonably hoppy but the flavor is all bitter and none of the rest of the citra goodness. Disappointingly dull
3.7 Hazy golden pour with a thin white head. Aroma is grapefruit and floral hops. Flavor of orange, tangerine and a little pine. Clean, bitter finish. Tastes bigger than it is. This place makes good brews... I love coming to Minneapolis for work.
3.6 Can. Citrus and slightly piney aroma. Light and smooth citrus hop flavour, mildly bitter balance. Good stuff.
3.8 Strong citrus aroma and golden color. Distinct Citra hop taste. Smooth palate. I’d go back to this one for sure.
3.7 On tap. Pours a hazy golden color with a decent head and spots of lacing. Aroma of grapefruit, citrus, grain and herbs. Taste of grapefruit, light fruits and trace of malt sweetness. Nice bitterness and a fairly clean finish. Moderate body, crisp and juicy. Easy drinker, very enjoyable.
3.6 Can from a mixed 12 pack. Hazy medium gold body with a thin bright white head. Nose of strong grapefruit and herbs like basil. The flavors are grapefruit rind and a little bit of grass. Wood is also a persistent note. The finish is smooth. A nice light pale ale.
3.6 16 oz. can, pours a hazy golden blonde with a medium white head. Aroma brings out citrus hops, biscuity malt and a little line. Flavour brings out a blast of piney and citrus hops, crisp biscuity malt, and biscuity malt. Juicy, sharp and dry. Very good.
4.0 Quite hazy copper and bronze coloured body with a very thin pure white head that fades quite quickly and does leave a pretty ugly lace on the sides. Aroma of bright citrus, honey and grassy herbal qualities with a little dose of tartness and a tiny bit of malt - but this all about the unencumbered hops - very nice and incredibly clean. Light-bodied; Strong citrusey and perfumey flavour at first with a nice mild bitterness from all the hops and a soft malt quality that shows up at the very end, along with a tiny bit of honey and fruit-based sweetness, but again, that is subdued. Aftertaste is crisp, grassy, herbal and very hop-centric in a good way - you have to go out of your way to find/taste malts. Overall, a very crisp and refreshing beer, packed with a lot of good grassy and herbal hop flavours that show the citrus elements and a faint bitterness at the very end. I sampled this sixteen ounce can, purchased from BeerTopia in Omaha, Nebraska on 13-February-2019 for US$9,99/six pack, sampled at home in Washington on 18-March-2019, just a month later.
3.7 Canned. Yellow orange pour. Bursting with citrus flavor. High carb. Great session beer
3.6 2018-09-20. Lightly hazy orange body, modest beige head. 3+ Mild fruity aroma, lightly citrusy. Flavour is similar, modest hoppy citrus. Smooth average body, soft carbonation. Tasty, mild but pretty impressive for the abv! 7/3-4/7/3/15+ Can shared by Matt G.
3.7 8/25/18. 16oz can from Pub 1848. Orange amber pour with a nice khaki head. Citra aroma, citrus, hints of tropical, some caramel, biscuit. Good flavor, citrus, biscuit, touch of caramel. Tasty enough!
3.5 zesty and really great can design. pale malts upfront in the aroma and bready on the back end. its decent
4.1 Really tasty EPA. Good balance of sweet bread and grapefruity hop body. Not overly bitter. Tried with the family at Northern Lights in 2018. Picked up with Jess at Zipps.
3.7 Found in can in variety pack. Pours a nice golden clear color. Great hop aroma with a surprisingly refreshing juicy taste. Really enjoyable.
3.6 Very pale slightly hazy pour. Candied orange peel, light lemon and a touch of soft estery character as well. Comes together pretty nicely - fruity and juicy with a sort of minerally and fruity back note. Lean bodied, moderate bitterness and actually does come across as a bitter (albeit one that’s American hopped). Pretty solid beer.
3.5 pours clear straw gold with a medium white head. danky citrus aroma. bright hoppy citrus taste. lively carbonation. light to medium bitter. Pleasant fading linger. Pretty good beer.
3.9 473 ml can. Pours an even and light hazy straw with a short lived white head. Aromas are light citrus fruits. Tastes are a punchy citrus with a good balance of tartness (without overpowering) and a malt backbone. Light to medium body, moderate carbonation, short citrus finish. Really nicely balanced beer. ---Rated via Beer Buddy
3.9 Draft at The Common in Winnipeg. Pours mildly hazy with a finger of white head that sticks to the glass. Aroma has bright, juicy notes of citrus, pine, mild resin, and hints of more tropical fruits. Taste is a lot like the aroma. Might caramel malt backbone mixes with citrus, pine, slight floral and pine, and a quick ending. Low-medium body and carbonation. Slightly resiny and a touch watery in the mouth but very refreshing with a dry finish. Overall would be great in the summer!!
3.7 Clear gold with a soapy white head. Aroma is tropical fruit, citrus fruit, toast and resin. Taste is light sweet and medium bitter. Palate is light with average carbonation.
3.5 Draft at Surly event at Craft Brewed. Pours a clear golden color with a finger of foam that lingers. Big pungent Citra nose, bright grapefruit and dank aromas. Clean and crisp, dry almost astringent finish. Palate is a little thin and watery, even for a session IPA. Would like a little more malt.
4.0 Tap at cbc 16, copenhagen. Clear golden color, white head. Aroma has hops, mango notes, fruits. Fresh fruity taste, hops, mango notes. Very nice session ipa.
2.5 Hazy yellow, frothy ckumoy head with random lacing. Starts off with a mild bitterness followed by a dry finish. Cereal, grass, palate falls short on complexity. Canned on 1/12/18, consumed on 4/24/18. $15.99/multi 12 pack, 12oz cans at Total Wine and More, Boca Raton, Florida
