2.8Very hazy brown color with fine head. Sweet, strong, toffee aroma and taste..
3.8Stubby 330 ml with label art that doesn’t work for me. At first opening, I fear it’s a gusher the way the foam bursts out. But that’s not the case and it calms down. Muddy orange-brown. Very strong aroma followed by strong taste. Dates, yes. Honey, not so sure. It isn’t too sweet or boozy. I hear they don’t make this anymore.
3.1Bottle. Pours a clear amber body with a big foamy off-white head. Aroma is caramel, red berries, dark malts and hints of raisins and hibiscus. Taste is burnt caramel, deep malts, hints of dried fruits. Herbs and grass in the aftertaste. Thin body, medium carbonation and a rather dry and non-fruity finish - all in all a bit weird for a dubbel, but not too bad either. But where are the dates? Brewed with dates? Where?
3.1Coppery colored pour underneath an over-sized off-white head. Lacing. Smells of pepper, malt and applesauce. Taste is big on malt with a caramel sweetness. A little dry and very carbonated. It was hard to tame this one into the glass. Not bad.
4.0In bottle from Beerboxx. Pours a nice dark ruby colour with a thick light tan head. Aroma of candy sugar, dates, caramel and yeast. Flavours of alcohol foremost with toffee apple, date, honey and caramel. Moderate carbonation, a foamy mouth-feel and a fair CO2 prickle. Very nicely done!
2.6Pours copper with with an off-white head. Aroma of fruitiness, malt and spice.Flavor is sweet and malty with some caramel and fruitiness.Medium body, average carbonation.
3.9Cloudy colour with a average creamy off-white head. Aroma is sweet malt, alcoholic and licorice. Taste is moderate sweet and bitter with a average duration. Alcoholic finish.
3.4Bottle. Hazy golden/brown with small off-white head. Flavour is malt, yeast, fruit, hops, nuts, sweet and a little bitter.
3.4Unclear dark yellow with an off-white head. Aroma is sweet, malty, yeasty and fruity. Flavor is quite sweet and moderate bitter. Dry and bitter finish. 020711
3.6330ml bottle at ‘t Brugs Beertje. Creamy, off-white head. Golden-brown body, near-clear. Aroma of dried and fresh fruits. Dates, prunes and bitter spices in flavour supported by dark honey. Modest hints of alcohol. Smooth and well bodied. A good one (Brugge, 03.05.2011).
3.1Quite ok head. Light brown colour, pretty unclear. Do I smell right, this has a smell of meat? Taste is malty and quite dry. Primary aroma is earthy, some sort of dirt. There’s secondary aromas which consist at least citrus and floral. Not super great, but ok beer.
3.920/02/2011 - 33cl bottle @ home - BB: 2013 (2011-63)
Little cloudy red brown beer, aery light off-white head, unstable and non adhesive. Aroma: raisins, almost vinous, dried fruits, malts, alcohol and caramel. MF: soft carbon, medium body. Taste: caramel, toast, some hops. Aftertaste: clearly chocolate with some mocha and spices (cloves). Ends a bit dry from the hops.
2.4pours hazy dark copper without a head. aroma is awkward - barnyard malts, maybe something related to dates, but it truly smells like spoiled fruits, and not ripened... taste is about the same with some nice burnt caramel malts. low carbonation, medium body, oily and sticky, but not cloying. did not like this one.
3.29th December 2007
Cloudy brownish beer brewed with dates. Rich and not sweet. Only a subtle hint of fruit. Dry malty finish. Alright!
3.8330ml bottle (Cambrinus, Brugge)
7 Sweet date aroma, fair amount of hoppiness accumulated above the huge head. A touch of chocolate after the head fades.
4 Cloudy murky reddy brown, huge frothy head, sinky flecks.
8 Rich roasty retronasals, toffee, a touch of chocolate, and loads of liquorice. Dates not really so obvious, but it is definitely sweet and dark fruity.
4 Crisp palate, lively carbonation. Finish absolutely swimming with liquorice. Nearly keeping up with that is a huge spiky noble hop bite.
15 Excellent beer. Just a bit of the 9% appears in the finish as it warms up, but apart from that it keeps the alcohol well hidden
3.6Sampled from an 11.2 oz brown bottle this beer poured a very cloudy dark brown color with a large foamy tan head that produced some lacing. The aroma was tangy with notes of caramel, molasses and fig. The flavor was dryish with notes of molasses, caramel, vanilla, biscuit, tart cherries and malted milk. The finish was long and dry with notes of cream, caramel and vanilla. Fairly full bodied. Interesting.
3.4Pours deep brown into a trappist glass. Tan micro head with good retention recedes leaving slight sheets to coat surface. Yeast and pit fruit aromas. Thin, sweet and hot from front to back with earthy dark pit fruits mingling with tropical fruit tartness.
3.5cloudy brown, huge light brown to offwhite head.
very very nice aroma, citussy spicy notes, alcohol, belgian yeast, mild sweet malts, spices. faint honey. Well balanced, very complex, and very belgian.
flavor is strong alcohol, sweet malts, honey, spices. Flavor is stronger and less complex than aroma, quite a lot of spicy floral yellow fruit peel frutiy bitterness, honey and sweet malts balance. Ends floral, fruit peely. At 9% the alc is pretty clearly there and it is also a bit high for the style. however, they seem to have beefed up the other ingredients too, so the beer does not present itself as a beer with too much alc.
3.0A reddish brown pour with serious gushing and a subsequently robust white head. Lots of dark fruit in the aroma- vinous booze, cherry, and burnt bread. Lots of burnt malts in the flavor with sharp alcohol and dark fruit presence. The palate is medium bodied with a slippery mouthfeel and finish.
3.7Pours a deep dark cloudy amber with a big long lasting creamy head. Huge aroma of dates and honey with some sweet malt, caramel. Taste is dates, dark fruit, plums, yeasty. Palate is med to full body with good carbonation, and creamy texture. Finish is malty, dates, dried fruit, yeast with some light bitter hops, ending has some bitter sweet dates, caramel and nuttiness. Overall an interesting brew but pretty good.
3.311.2oz bottle picked up at the Wine and Cheese Place in Clayton, MO outside of St. Louis. Pours a murky, brownish orange colored body with some particulate floating around. Finger-width, frothy, tan head that dissipates quickly and leaves a light lacing. Aroma is a mix between sweet bread and a good amount spices with a distinct Belgian yeast. Dates, ripe fruits, banana, and some strong earthy pepper comes out more as this warms along with some licorice and chocolate. Very unique and interesting aroma that also gives off some band-aid and funky smoke, but not in an offensive way. Flavor is similar. Lots of sweet and spicy bread with a fruity Belgian yeast. Lots of earthy pepper that gives off a bit of a blue cheesiness funk and some licorice. More ripe fruits and a light chocolate before the earthy pepper and yeast comes out more at the end that gives off a light bitterness. Finishes with a hint of smoke and band-aid similar to the aroma. Dry with a fairly lengthy aftertaste and a hint of booze following a medium body and moderate, lively carbonation. Overall, an interesting beer. Bready, yeasty, spicy, and fruity with plenty of peppery earth. A bit funky at times, but I didn’t find it offensive. Not one of my favorites, but glad to have tried.
3.211.2 ounce bottle. Not sure where I got this one. Pours a hazy muddle brown color with a few particles. Medium head, decent head retention and lacing. Aroma of raisins, toffee and a slight chemical smell. The taste is figs, dates and other fruits, candi sugar, toffee and a slightly burnt finish. Medium bodied. 6/5/10
3.6Pours a hazy dark orange color with an off white head. Aroma of roasted malts, caramels, hints of chocolates, herbs and spices. Flavors of roasted malts, dark fruits, pepper spices, wallnuts and some liquorice.
Good carbonation, light sweetness and good bitter dry finish. Interesting complex flavors, very nice and enjoyable.
4.3Purchased at De Bierkoning in Amsterdam. Pours a hazy orange with a large off white head. The aroma is amazing. Wow... Blue cheese in all it’s funky earthy gloriousness. There was vanilla, dates, plums, and Belgian yeast on the nose as well. But I don’t think I have ever smelled anything quit like that before. The flavor is quite fruity to start with, dark fruit, soft fruit, and then moves into an earthy, musty, blue cheesy place. A tart berry like finish. A great dubbel!
2.9At first I thought that this was a huge change from the blonde which I just tried from this brewery. Poured with a HUGE foamy frothy light tan head. Bottle started foaming over even though it was about 2/3 empty and some lace. Color isn’t too appealing - cloudy opaque coffee with milk brown. Aroma ends up being yeasty, malty, carmel, hint of bandaids. Flavor’s very similar but more sweet in the end. Both aroma and flavor degrades quickly after opening. Body is ok and carbonation is aggressive. Finish is a little boozy and like flavor with yeast standing out and then fading to medium length. Not nearly as good as I thought at first.
4.2Bottle, thanks to hobbersr for the share! Pours hazy amber/brown, with a very thik, very rocky, very persistent off-white head. Good lacing, if clumpy. Nose is butter-rum, raisin, blue cheese, english pudding, cinnamon toast, prunes, melted butter, spice. Flavors of dried fig, spicecake, nuts, tight acidity, perfectly balanced. Dry & austere, yet very sumptuous if you dig deeper. Complex and brilliant.
4.4Looks great!!! dark brown you can see all the elements. great head. Very funky cheese aroma smells amazing.
Soo complex fruit chocolate cheese, malt. candy and they don’t clash at all it is like 100 tiny flavour expiriances all at onev. unique and special. This is great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
3.4head: big
colour: deep red amber , clear
smell: bitter , hops , sour , something my father uses in his grounded pork ...(spice)
taste: bitter, hops , sour background , cognac like finish , earthy notes , yeast .... at first when i smelled it i didn’t think it was gonna be a good one , but i had to change my mind , cause this one is quite a good shot at an abbey dubbel !
3.2Bottled. Poured a hazy brown. Aromas was fruit etc. Taste was a bit light and too spritely for a dubbel IMO, needed more malt.
3.7Pours hazy reddish brown with a thin foamy, mostly receding off-white head. Taste is phenolic, intense spice, pepper, alcohol, dates, toffee, wood and bubble gum. Full to heavy bodied with lively carbonation.
