3.6 Bottle. Light to moderate malt and hop aromas of light bread, roasted, herbs and orange, moderate dough for the yeast, with date and wood in the background. Head is average size, fizzy, white with some slippery lacing and is mostly lasting. Color is murky medium amber/orange with some junk swirling around. Flavor starts light sweet and moderately acidic, then finishes moderately acidic and bitter. Palate is medium, oily with a lively carbonation and a lightly alcoholic and dry finish. More malt dominant than hops in this DIPA, but the Belgian touches makes it unique and tasty.
3.8 15th July 2009 Very cloudy gold - brown beer with a thick frothy white head. Soft palate, frothy in the mouth. Grapefruit hops with hop spice. A nice effervescent sweetness going on that balances the bitter hops very well. A little grass. Very moorish, light and airy.
3.5 11.2oz bottle in a tulip. Pours deep cloudy amber with a fluffy, off-white head. Aroma of citrusy and floral malts, spicy yeast, and lots of caramel malts. All of these flavors are strong, but it’s not as hoppy as a lot of double IPAs. Good amount of hops for a Belgian beer though. Average texture. A good beer.
3.5 33 cl bottle @ Brussels. Rated on 20100718. Pours golden color with small head. Aroma of hoppy fruits, grass and malts. Flavor of fruits, malts, some yeast and dry hay.
3.2 From notes. First reviewed 6/11/2009. Poured from a bottle into a tulip. T Smisje + pours a full copper color with a small amount of brown sediment that drifts to the bottom of the glass (I intentionally left the last few drops in the bottle). A 2cm fizzy white head leaves a little lacing around the glass. Quite a sweet aroma. Green apples, apricot, pear and cherries provide the fruit base. Some herbal notes are quite apparent as well. Taste: The herbal flavor is even more noticeable than it was in the smell. Some light cherry and pear medicinal notes persist in the malt, but the hops have a strong lemon peel zest with a hint of apricot. This has a very fizzy feeling in my mouth, along with a medium body. Leaves a slightly herbal and bitter taste. A little light on the mouthfeel, along with the almost excessively herbal and low hoppiness take a little bit away from the beer, at least for the catergory. It is definitely not an IPA, as it was advertised at the bar I was at. After drinking it I found out it contains Valerian and lemon balm, which account for the highly herbal and unique flavor. Maybe I will give this one another go and see if I like it any better. It is definitely not exactly like anything I have had before.
3.0 Amber colored pour. Small white head. Minimal lacing. Burnt sugar aroma , a little fruit aroma - peaches and grapefruit. That’s where it ends as far as hops is concerned. Taste is vanilla/caramel. No bitterness, no hop/floral taste. Average amber style beer. Not close to any sort of D/IIPA, but a blasé attempt.
4.1 Hazy orange-red colour. Giant light foamy head. Aroma has lots of candy and hops. At first there’s sweet candy and malts. Later a fuller hop flavour that remains smooth and rich.
1.6 Man oh man, very murky pour with one finger of off white head. Nose is awful, DMS bomb. Very vegetal, smells like Chef Boyardee noodles and DMS. Bready and grainy, lots of astringency.
2.6 Bottle at Chez Moeder Lambic Saint Gilles, Brussels, Belgium august 2011. Amber, hazy with a big beige head. Roasty aroma. Strange sweet taste.
3.4 Great beer, despite it is somewhat cloudy. Belgian fill with much litter acid. Aroma slightly moldy from the hops. the taste is good but very strong team of alcohol.
3.1 Bottle at Chez Moeder Lambic Saint Gilles, Brussels. Golden beer with a lasting offwhite head. Malty aroma, milky, hoppy, grassy, some citrus. Sweet flavor, creamy, some hops, but not enough. Too sweet and sticky.
2.2 Pours caramel in color with a off white head. Aroma is bread and malts. Highly bitter with no sweetness. Finish is even more bitter. Big chewy malt body. Just a chewy bitter beer with no fruit.
3.2 Bottled. A hazy golden beer with a thin lazing off-white head. The aroma has notes of over ripe fruits. The flavor is sweet with notes of hops, straw, over ripe fruits, and caramel, leading to a dry and bitter finish.
3.7 Orange and very unfiltered in its appearance. Huge white head that leaves a good lacing on the glass. Wonderful aroma of dried fruits, citrus and malts. Taste is heavy sweet and heavy bitter, very big, prolific and surprisingly round with notes of peaches and abricots to go with a sticky texture. Yeast and alcohol makes its presence as well. Quite a nice try at a "belgian IPA", but a touch to heavy and sweet to be a personal favorite.
3.0 From bottle @ Delirium Café, Brussels. Creamy blond top. Bright orange colored body. Orange fruity hop aroma. Toasted malts and a nice whiff of honey, too. Taste is more than medium sweet. Nutty and toffee-ish. Noticeable bitterness, but not enough for balancing. Hot, sticky mouthfeel. Finishes on the sweet side.
3.6 Pours a two finger light tan head that fades quickly to a thin layer leaving no lace. Light-medium carbonation and medium bodied. Murky amber color with a ton of yeast left in bottle. Nose is yeasty and flavor is caramel and yeast. High ABV is hidden. Some bitterness in aftertaste. Pricey at $5.95 for a 330ml bottle from Colonial Spirits, Acton, MA.
3.6 33cl bottle from my beer cellar, vintage 2008 Plenty of white head. Nice clear golden colour. Lovely smooth bitterness. Yummy
12/9/9/10/10/10
3.7 Orange colour with a big white head. Nose is fruity, spice and hoppy. Taste is heavy hops and very bitter. Palate and aftertaste is dry, bitter and warming alcohol.
4.3 Dark orange colour with huge sticky white head. Surprisingly malty aroma, lots of caramel but also grass, fresh hops and spices. Taste is incredibly spicy, it almost burns your tongue. Bitter hops, citrus, grapefruit but also sweet oranges and caramel coat your tongue. Bitter orange marmalade is the predominant aftertaste and it’s really wonderful and unique, it’s quite different from American DIPAs and really reminds me of eating a quality British marmalade. The mouthfeel on this is really crazy good, this is a strong, assertive beer and it doesn’t beat around the bush.
2.8 Bottle, label is different, but still labeled Plus India Pale Ale. Chunky golden orange pour, white head. Sweet malts, musty hops, yeast, strange off-tasting spices, and pepper. I did not enjoy it.
3.7 Hazy orange with a big white head. Aroma is sweet fruity, yeasty, spicy and hoppy, citrus and oranges. Flavor is medium sweet and very bitter. The finish is dry, bitter and warming alcohol. To me this seems like a fusion between a tripel and a double IPA and it works very well. 040211
4.3 15/11/2010 - 33cl bottle @ home Little cloudy dark orange beer, almost amber. Thick white creamy head, no lacing. Aroma is sweet, honey, clear hint of yeast, basement, some fruity hops. MF: lots of carbon, medium to full body, creamy soft texture. Taste: fuirty (peach, pineapple) at first, then spices (cloves, anis and pepper), malts and alcohol sweet. Aftertaste is very long and dry. Nice soft hops, reminding me of Duvel Tripel Hop, so probably Styrian Golding or Amarillo? Very nice balanced and subtle IPA with enough hops to dignify it’s name.
3.5 Pours cloudy golden with a thick foamy beige head and a peppery yeast aroma. The flavor, too, is very peppery, starts sweet but quickly turns bitter. A very strange and interesting brew.
3.9 Pours hazy gold into a snifter. Bright white head with excellent retention recedes leaving spotted sheets to coat surface. Lemony yeast and alcohol aromas. Bittersweet spruce upfront turning to a bready middle before bitter lemon pith in the dry, lasting alcohol burn finish.
3.2 Sampled from an 11.2 oz brown bottle this beer poured a hazy yellow color with an enormous creamy yellow-white head that lingered and produced great lacing. The aroma was Sweettart candies, faint grapefruit, funk and must. The flavor was tart and bitter with Sweettart candies, grapefruit, table sugar and fruit. The finish was long, dry and tart and had lingering table sugar. Medium body. By no means an IPA yet alone a IIPA. The alcohol was well hidden at least. Ok.
2.9 [330ml bottle, Bierbrasserie Cambrinus, Brugge] The label has a cartoon dog cramming hops into a bottle using a funnel. This should have given me some warning. Paying homage to American Double IPA’s, this tasted like something BrewDog would come up with – massive, biting hops followed the violently hoppy, almost blue cheese aromas. This thing is a t’hop monster+, it’s actually spicier than beers I tried with Gruut added, so many hops having been pounded into the bottle (there are four different kinds added). Near the end I experimented and added the sediment to the glass, whereupon it went dark brown and became totally undrinkable. There’s definitely a good beer in there somewhere – just needs to dial back a bit on the trampling hops (I have no idea what the IBU would be for this one). Not much subtlety about it! [16032010]
3.5 gold/orange pour with a very thick white fluffy head. aroma is definitely earthy belgian yeasty tones. light funk to it. some citrusy hop as well. Biscuity maltiness. some tart fruitiness as well. Flavour is more of the same, earthy malty body. yeasty, some grassy hop, some light citrusy hop. Would love to try a fresh bottle. Thought that the 10% was very well blended.
3.7 Similar to many of the belgian IPA hybrids on the market today. However, this one packs more of a punch, and suffers slightly because of it. The ABV is pretty noticable, and not in a great way. However, I thought the aroma was great. Not a bad experiment. More of a tripel IPA IMO, versus a dubbel IPA, with the dark malts missing.
3.0 Pours a nice, clear gold erupting with a huge, fluffy white head. Nose is belgian yeast with some sweet, pale fruity malt, pear and a huge spicy hop presence. Mouth has a nice sweet malt character to balance out the huge hop kick which is all spicy, piney hops but then there’s this charred, smokey character that comes through on the swallow which throws off the whole thing, but accompanied by alcohol warmth, lingering hop bitterness and sour apples.
