2.1 Beautiful brown orange unfiltered beer. slightly tan lingering head. aroma of musty yeasty lemons. Mustardy and salty. The dark candy sugar takes it over the top, making it too much of a malta goya product. A disappointment.
2.8 Meh. Basic light-colored beer, no real aroma. Tastes light and somewhat sweet, mustard, and a bit of bitterness. Clean finish. OK beer.
3.3 On tap and stemware served at the Bavarian Lodge in Lisle, IL., displaying a hazed, orange/gold color, with a white, frothy head, and very clingy, curtainy lacing. The aroma was "grandma’s attic" yeasty funkiness, fruit, light spice, with light tartness. The flavor continued these, added subtle sweetness, moderate hop bitterness, some dry spiciness that I can only attribute to the mustard seed, maybe some herbal hints, but an overly fizzy effervescence with a seltzery nature to it, in a medium-light body. Interesting brew, but could only enjoy in short sips without belching.
3.6 Bottle. Pours deep gold with a medium-sized off-white head that leaves lots of lacing. Aroma is quite malty, moderately yeasty, some fruit and sweetness. Flavor is sweet, malty, lots of caramel, some banana and fruit esters, quite yeasty, candi sugar. Wouldn’t have picked up the mustard unless tipped off -- still not sure I get mustard. There is a generally spicy, sort of vegetal, vaguely metallic flavor. Is that mustard? Who knows. Interesting. Pretty good, in spite (or because?) of the lack of specific mustardiness. Medium palate.
2.9 On-tap in Daisey’s: Brugge, on 18th Oct 2012. Light golden in body with white lacing. Would never have guessed this was a ’mustard’ beer unless I’d been told. I couldn’t find a trace of mustard flavours in my glass: aroma wise or in the taste. I thought it interesting and yeasty, hints of spices and candid fruits but no mustard for me. This was my first beer of the evening so my tatse buds should have been fit enough to find some mustard if there was any! Try it please: but the mustard presence is low, or at least it was in my 33cl glass.
3.1 Farmer’s Cabinet, Philly tap: Pours an orange color with a white head. Aroma is Belgian yeast. Taste is kind of light like mineral water flavored with beer. I didn’t really get too much mustard taste out of this. Basically, this is just a slightly sweet Belgian ale. I’ve had better, and I’ve had worse.
3.7 Hazy bronze amber with an airy cider head. Quite fizzy. Sprightly Belgian yeast fills the nose, accompanied by beer crusts and a touch of mustard seed. Bready beer crusted body. Mustard and Belgian sugar spiced body.
3.5 Pours golden yellow. Sticky sweet presence. Smell was mostly sweet. A little bit of sourness and a touch of bitterness, but didn’t get a huge sense of mustard. Pretty tasty, but nothing too amazing.
2.9 translucent copper with a foamy beige head. syrupy full body with high carbonation. aroma: heavy minerality (wet stone and metallic character), caramel malt, yeast, grainy mustard. Rather dank and earthy. taste: bright grainy tartness, canned fruit, amber candy sugar, and then a bit of mustard spice lingering in the finish. very odd overall, but would be quite nice for food pairings.
2.7 Pours a copper colour with intense carbonation. Some acidic citric notes in the aroma. Very strong carbonation in the mouth. A hint of mustard is just about tracable. Although this one has a malty, sticky sweetness the texture is quite thin and watery.
1.9 Picked up for the hell of it. Pours out of an 11.2 oz bottle. Looks like orange mud with some white froth on top. I should have poured it more slowly to avoid the yeast chunks. Belgian yeast character on the nose, with some sweet fruits, plus more yeast. Flavor is like salt water combined with some belgian yeast. Don’t get much mustard, but plenty of salt water. No idea what even causes that off-flavor. Borderline drain pour.
3.1 11.2oz bottle in a tulip. Pours amber with a lacy, off-white head. Aroma of mustard, spicy yeast, candy sugar, and some caramel malts and light hops. The mustard isn’t too strong, but I think it takes away from this beer rather than adding to its complexity. Average texture. A decent beer.
3.8 Bottle. Hazy golden pour with a lasting pillowy white head. Lightly sweet malty ale with spices, including mustard seed. Hint of sour. Unusual. Peppery finish. Mild hop bite. Honey syrup body. Bit of fizz on the tongue. Something unique to go back to every now and then. Do not let the thought of mustard seed discourage you! Update: Having on draft at Monks. The draft tastes even more herbaceous and fragrant. Honeycomb sage. Distinctive. Need to try.
3.5 Candy sugar, apple cider, and some funk in the aroma. Flavor starts with malt and spice, and not as sweet as I expected. Funk and a little bitterness in the finish, which might be the contribution of the mustard seed mentioned on the label. You wouldn’t want to put away a sixpack of this, but it’s a nice change of pace.
2.5 Amber colored pour. Small white head with a little lacing behind as it falls. Malty and solventy aroma. Sugary sweet with a very dry aftertaste. No hint of mustard seed at all. More sugary than anything. Not a good example of any style.
3.3 Did not taste since it is made in the new brewery. Before it have no enough time to mature (brewed in small quantity and sold quicq
2.5 Strange dry / dusty smell maybe a little as mustard. slightly acidic taste again as mustard?. Were consumed after BB date.
3.9 I can only assume the mustard is what given this somewhat basic belgian ale a distinctive sour and bitter kick. Not terrible, but not really exciting either.
3.2 In bottle. Pours an unattractive cloudy greenish orange colour with a thin white head. Aroma of mustard, caramel, leather and lemon. Similar flavours, a little sweet, mildly bitter and quite yeasty. A dry finish with mild carbonation and CO2 prickle. I quite like this!
3.5 bottle at home ... at colins tasting ... murky amber ... big yeast ... mustard ... orange toffee nose ... fizzy ... yeasty ... light fruits ... hint of mustard seed ... orange pine ... bit too bitter in linger ... very interesting... and not to bad all told
3.4 A bit of a gusher that pours a cloudy dark orange, almost brown color with a two finger yellowish beige head that quickly settles into a thin ring. Spotty lacing left behind. Odd aroma with a prominent mustard character as well as some other spices, light fruit and alcohol. It’s really surprising how forward the mustard character is. Underneath there is some pale malt, peppery zest and crisp, light fruit. Weird. Medium bodied with a balance of zesty spicy, light fruit, pale malt, alcohol and sweet, tangy mustard. The mustard presence is there but is not as prominent as the aroma suggests. There’s a slight creamy texture that adds to the body and compliments the spice and sweetness of the mustard. Hints of apple and pear along with the alcohol presence provide a decent amount of sweetness. Spices compliment the mustard flavor which is surprisingly pretty tasty. I was expecting kind of a gross novelty but I really enjoyed this beer, finding it full bodied, flavorful and easy to drink.
3.5 En botella.Dorada un poco tostada, sin filtrar.Buena espuma con buenos encajes.Aromas a candy especies,levadura... Triple suave donde el sabor de mostaza le da un carácter único. Hay que probarla
3.3 Bottle. Pours amber with a thin white head. Aroma and flavor is a nice mix between spicy and sweet. Notes of overripe fruit and spices (coriander, mustard?). Nice bitter and slightly dry finish.
3.9 Tasted from bottle into tulip glass. Slowly poured a opaque copper color, thick with yeast haze and MASSIVE, long-lasting, creamy head. Evidence of strong bottle fermentation, live yeast esters: mainly pepper, clove, banana, healthy compost. Powerful aromas of rising dough, baking bread, lightly roasted seeds or nuts. Pleasant hops bitterness. Mustard is in there, you can barely smell and taste it, very artfully done. Here is a perfect example of a creative but self-restrained artisanal Belgian brewer. Medium body, great "chewy" mouthfeel. Fairly high-gravity, but no adverse alcohol hotness. Simultaneously filling and refreshing. Highly recommended.
3.1 Appearance: murky orange brown; eager, thick off-white head slowly shrinking to a solid layer with medium lacing. Aroma: hot dog water, old person’s candy, tequila. Taste: spicy zing up front, with a honeyed champage sweetness trailing behind. Finish: slightly tingly and sweet, with fading notes of white grapes and ginger. Notes: The mustard lends a little spice, without imparting mustardy flavors. Smells pretty bad, tastes pretty good. Nice palate. Not as weird as I expected; pretty traditional Belgian Ale. Reminds me of the ginger-honey maibock I brewed late last year, only much, much better.
3.4 bottle@home: extremely hazy mud/amber coloured, head was white & very, very aggressive when I poured it but eventually settled down & turned out to be surpassingly lasting, smelled a lot sweeter than I expected it to with earthly hop, spices & even fruit, taste was heavy on spices with it actually being a little bit spicey/hot but not as much as I expected it to be, very earthly hop, malt heavy body and yet it is rather light & has a touch of sweet mustard seeds, not as over the top as I expected it to be but certainly unique and interesting, slightly bitter
3.5 Bottle. Poured hazy copper color with a huge off-white frothy head that mostly lasted with good lacing. Medium to heavy herbal hop and yeast aroma. Medium to full body with a smooth texture, thin particles and soft carbonation. Medium to heavy sweet flavor with a medium to heavy sweet finish of moderate to long duration. Complex drinkable brew.
3.4 It pours a medium brown with a white head, very good lacing, light carbonation. It smells earthy, a tad mustard, and hops. The taste is unique but ok. It has notes of citrus and mustard. It has a great mouthfeel and surprisingly drinkable.
3.2 At Ebenezer’s Pours Pours out a hazy amber topped with a tall head. Aroma was spice, yeast, clove, bread, and some malt. Taste was much as the aroma with a nice spice on it.
2.7 Mustard beer... how awesome is that? I should have had bitterballen when I tried it.
