Tallgrass IPA

Tallgrass IPA

Our third beer, Tallgrass IPA, is an India Pale Ale that is rich, complex, and flavorful. We are proud to be the first brewery here in the Great Plains to have the first brewed, bottled, and draft IPA out on the market!

Tallgrass IPA originally came to life as a creation during Jeff’s early homebrewing days (batch Numero Uno), and it was consumed in short order by his friends who came over to cook out and help with the next batch. After some modifications over the years (because nobody’s rookie homebrew batch tastes all that great, but your friends will tell you it does) the recipe was dialed in to become what is now Tallgrass IPA. We love this beer and think you will too!

What is with the name “India Pale Ale”? Well, India Pale Ale’s have a history that reaches way back to the days of the British Empire and the need for good and proper British beer for the soldiers in India. It just so happens that hops not only taste and smell great, they also have natural preservative properties that help keep beer fresher. Obviously, there was no way to keep beer cool on the long voyage around Cape Horn from England to India, so the intellectual forebearers of modern microbiology (genius brewers of course!) figured that if some hops were good for storage then heaps of hops would be great!

With this technique, these hero brewers and their hops kept the beer good and the soldiers of the empire inebriated, even in the furthest corners of the globe. Even more, the hoppiness of the IPA preserved not only the beer itself, but the great taste it created has preserved the style as one of the most popular beer styles in the world in the 21st century. If those brewers weren’t knighted by the empire back then, they should have been!

3.5 Standard copper pour with a white head. Maybe a little lighter in color than some other IPAs. Aroma and flavor are both on the dank, piney side of the hop spectrum, but unfortunately the malt character overrides the hops to some degree. Nice sticky mouthfeel. Solid brew, but not the best IPA I’ve had.
2.6 Yeah it’s hoppy and malty so if this is yourtype of beer please enjoy. It’s not favorite type of brew so I really can’t rate it much higher than I did. Not bad but just not up my alley!
3.2 pours orange with a small tan head. This beer has tastes of citrus and a light sweetness, there is a medium hoppiness and some grassy tastes and ends bitter.
3.7 Slightly above average appearance and nose. Aggressive hop character; nice bitterness. A really solid IPA, though a touch malty. I also wish they would make this available in 6/12oz. rather than the pint four pack.
2.9 The beer is slightly hazy and appears light sunset orange hued, sporting two inches of dense head. Lasting retention with ample lacing on the glass. The aroma brings grass, pine, earthy malt. Smells OK. The flavor is lightly bitter with zesty carbonation. Fair hop presence, but pretty understated. A non challenging IPA, offering balance and restrained flavors. Mediocre.
3.1 Appearance: Slips out a lightly hazed, orangey body with a medium-sized, near white head. Smell: Bready pale maltiness coated in butterscotch cohabiting with hoppy notes of florals and citrus. Taste: Bready, pale malts with, again, the noted butterscotch. A light, lingering sweetness. The buttery quality remains even after the sweetness dies off. Flowery, citrusy hops, perhaps, a bit resiny, too, with a medium-plus bitterness. Closes out dry, smooth. Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Medium carbonation. Smooth mouthfeel. Overall: Seems we have a bit of diacetyl present, which, is a fault I’ve never been too terribly upset by. I mean, pop open my refrigerator and who is an omnipresent member? Butter, baby!
3.0 Tap. Arrived a clear amber with a small white head, minimal lacing. Aroma is mildly malty with scents of floral and citrus. Medium in sweetness and light to medium bitterness. Medium bodied with average carbonation, bitter finish. Overall, a sweet and not so bitter IPA, pleasant and drinkable (especially the malt character) but there are better IPAs out there.
3.0 Tap @ Kansas City Airport Marriott: Clear copper color with a nice off-white head. Grassy aroma with a malty backbone in the flavor. Slightly bitter hairspray aftertaste. Ok, definitely not a West Coast IPA.
3.4 Pours a clear orange/amber color with a large white head. Aroma is citrus and floral. The taste is well balanced between hoppy bitterness and malty sweetness. Definitely more malty than most IPA?s.
3.1 The pour is a dark copper with a thick white head that slowly fades into lacing. The aroma is slightly malty and pretty uninteresting. The taste is somewhat awkward and feels unbalanced. It starts out malty which carries through until the very end in which all the hops seem to hit at once. It goes from being a nice crisp and clean beer to an abruptly bitter ending. Not my cup of tea!
3.9 When this came out, it was easily one of Tallgrass’s better beers. Since their expansion, several newer beers have taken that mantle. Still, the nice balance of bread and pine is pretty enjoyable.
3.4 Orange color with a thin off white head out of the can. Fresh bread and orange citrus nose. Crusty bread malty flavors with a strong orange and grapefruit hop flavor. Long candied orange peel finish. Okay IPA.
3.0 Can@Oliver Twist, Stockholm (old backlog). Amber colour with a small slightly off-white head. Aroma is fruity, wooden, bready malty with some slight toffee and mild spicy notes. Flavour is sweet malts, some fruits and mild toffeeish notes. Nice balance with everything in it, nothing is standing out that much.
3.7 Aroma...spruce, herbs, earthy, Appearance...amber, , hazy, frothy head, Taste...lightly bitter, light sweetness Palate...soft carbonation, bitter finish I’d reccommend this to any fan of IPA’s . Nice finish. Refreshing. Another winner from Tallgrass.
2.9 Slightly hazy bright amber pour with a 2 finger, creamy off white head that has excellent retention and leaves some nice lacing. Aroma is sweet and soapy right away, some fruit and floral and citrus hops wind their way through shortly after. Flavor is sweet malt, caramel, biscuit and a little floury grain right away, some sweet floral and pine hops come through after, along with a mineral and pine finish. Light to medium palate with a creamy entry, immediately washed out by a fairly light, but blanketing and overly sharp carbonation. Sweet and lacking in hops, but decent. Looks nice.
3.7 Can at home, from Local Swap! Finally got the box! Thanks unclemike! Pours clear deep orange, thick cream coloured head, fantastic lacing. Nose is nectarine, white peach, tea, lightly juicy. Flavours are very juicy, loads of grapefruit, peach, apricot, tea. Lightly marmalade-esque finish. Not sure why this scores so low, I really liked it!
3.3 The beer smells of floral and piney hops with a caramel back. Deep amber golden with an off white head. Bitter particularly in the piney region. Medium bodied with long bitter finish.
2.6 Poured from tall boy can. Very cloudy copper/ orange color with very thick off white head. Head quickly dissipates leaving some lacing on the glass. Very subtle floral aroma. Smooth, crisp taste, light hop bitterness at the back. Very easy to drink, refreshing, not a bad IPA, not too overly bitter or strong.
3.1 Pours a large fluffy, rocky, lasting head Color is a dark orange, copper Hard to pick aroma out of the thick head At first taste I wouldn’t call this an ipa. Malty caramel with a little spice, maybe moving into a bit of pine. Toffee and cinnamon in the back, with very little bitterness. A bit gingerbready. Just the slightest bitterness in the back cleans it out. Despite the heavy malt, it’s not exceptionally sweet. Just kinda middle of the road. Not a bad amber, but really not an ipa.
2.5 In a can. Nice light amber with 2 fingers of fluffy head and fantastic lacing. Nose is carmel malt, faint hops. Tastes is more of the same. Butter crumbles.
3.6 Aroma of malts and caramel and hopps... taste is pine. ?hints of caramel..good hopps.. great beer
3.5 Can. Dusky orange colour, robust white head that leaves scant lace after rapidly fading. Aroma and flavour are both more malty than hoppy, but still quite nice with a toasty caramel malt base, and herbal and marmalade hop notes with a moderately bitter finish. I have a soft spot for malty IPAs so this gets bigger props from me than other raters I’m sure.
3.2 Can from Surkyk’s in Minnesota. Dark amber pour. Good malt backbone with pine and straw flavored hops. Good at first. Flavors don’t stand up throughout the beer, but generally good.
3.6 Tasty looking amber colored beer. Smell is hoppy/fruity some grapefruit. Taste is hop forward, nut well balanced with malt and toffee, finishes with a sweetness and pine after taste.
3.5 16 oz. can from a trade. (Thanks Tripplebrew) Shaker showed amber color with thin white head. Weak retention. Nose is herbal notes and grapefruit. Taste is NOT a hop bomb. More on the sweet side from the malt. And that’s what I like about it. Resin and grapefruit hops is balanced real nice with the caramel / toffee malts. Pine hops lingers slightly after the sip. If you are looking for a sweeter IPA and are not in the mood for 100 IBU, hop obnoxious brew, this is a nice option. Reminds me more of an English style IPA. Nice.
2.7 Poured from a pint size can. Cardboard hops. Toasty, bready, earthy/fruity hops. This was an oxidized example of an IPA. Would like to try a fresh example.
2.9 It poured an amber color with a white head. The aroma was of citrus, some pine and tea. The taste was sweet with a bitter finish and a medium mouth feel.
3.5 Pours hazy amber copper. Nice thick head gives way to nice glass lacing. Aroma is very much orange citrus and malty bread also picking up pinneapple ? Kind of almost a fruit cake nose. Very bitter tasting up front with a thick malty body finishes with pine notes not sure if am right but seems like this must have centennial hops in it. More bitter than sharp and floral citrus ....so if u are into bitter ipa?s this would be ur thing, vs the bright floral ones good ipa i would bet this would be great with fish and chips or paired with a wiffle ball bat to the shins. Nevermind
3.4 Citrus, grapefruit and yeast in aroma. The flavor is citrus, grapefruit, mild hop resin, an undercurrent of malts and a dry/crisp finish.
3.0 Amber pour, 2 fingers of puffy white head. Slightly grassy aroma, lighter hops. Pine hops up front, sweet malt, grassy. medium body. Would not mind trying a fresher sample.
