Tallgrass Vanilla Bean Buffalo Sweat

Tallgrass Vanilla Bean Buffalo Sweat

In 2013, two nine-gallon casks were filled with Buffalo Sweat and a handful of vanilla beans, and were stored in Tallgrass founder Jeff Gill’s office. A few weeks later, Jeff entered his office to find one of casks had exploded, spraying beer all over his office and leaving a hole in the ceiling above his desk shaped exactly like the cork bung used to seal the cask. Thankfully, the other cask did not explode. That night at an event in Wichita, Kansas, the beer was so well-received, it immediately got the call to become the brewery’s winter seasonal.

3.7 Pours black with a tan head. Aroma of vanilla, chocolate and coffee. Taste is vanilla, coffee and grains.
3.6 Dark brown/black color; Medium body; Aroma of toasted sweet malt, vanilla, cocoa, & dark chocolate; Flavor of roasted malt, milk/dark chocolate, some vanilla, hops, and coffee; Good.
3.6 On tap. Pours black with tan head. Scent is coffee and vanilla. Taste is similar and includes malts an cocoa. Body is is on the heavy side. Finish is sticky and sweet.
3.9 Pours somewhere between brown and black, fizzy beige head, elusive. Nice aroma, very rich for the abv, deep coffee roast, caramel, earth, chocolate and vanilla galore. Thin as expected for 5% but very nice... Chocolate syrup, vanilla bean, lingering coffee bitterness. Dry finish. Solid.
4.0 Dark and sweet and chocolaty and roasty and vanilla, vanilla, vanilla. Also, vanilla.
3.9 Deep dark brown pour with a creamy beige head. Aroma is coffee with French vanilla creamer and toffee. Taste is chocolate, coffee, vanilla and oats. Medium body. Really nice beer.
4.0 Black pour with a thin light tan head that recedes pretty quick. Delightful creamy oat-y and chocolaty vanilla cereal tone on the nose. Delightful smooth flavor that’s dark and cocoa’y with big earthy vanilla and gentle oat-y undertone. Creamy and sweet and vanilla tinged with lovely bready chocolate.
3.8 Pours a dark brown with a foamy off-white head. Aroma is roast, vanilla, caramel, lactose, chocolate, and some earthy notes. Flavor is vanilla, caramel, chocolate, lactose, and some roast. Well-carbonated with a medium, creamy body. Sweet, but not too sweet. The vanilla bean is definitely an improvement on the already solid Buffalo Sweat. Very good.
3.8 16 oz can from TN with a BB date stamp of 24 March 2017. Pours blackish-brown with a sizable, fluffy tan head that settles to a durable top coat. Soapy lacing. Aroma: roasted grains, vanilla, coffee, chocolate and a faint touch of smoke. Flavor: lots of vanilla; at the threshold of too much. Roasted grains. Chocolate and and coffee in the aftertaste. Medium-high sweetness for style. Overall: with sweet vanilla and faint coffee overtone, this makes a fine after dinner beverage.
3.4 A nice stout. Sweet and malty. Dark fruit flavors, some roasted notes, chocolate. A dryer finish.
3.9 12 ounce can into pint glass, best before 5/12/2017. Pours clear very dark brown color with a 2 finger fairly dense and fluffy light khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lasts. Nice dense foamy lacing clings on the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Aromas of big milk chocolate, cocoa, creamed coffee, vanilla, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, toasted brown bread, light nuttiness/herbal, and roast/toasted earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of dark/roast/bready malt and vanilla/lactose notes; with great strength. Taste of big milk chocolate, cocoa, creamed coffee, vanilla, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, toasted brown bread, light nuttiness/herbal, and roast/toasted earthiness. Light herbal/roast bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of milk chocolate, cocoa, creamed coffee, vanilla, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, toasted brown bread, light nuttiness/herbal, and roast/toasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Very nice complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt and vanilla/lactose flavors; with a nice roasted bitter/sweet balance, and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Minimal dryness. Medium carbonation and medium-plus body; with a very smooth, creamy/silky, and slightly sticky/chalky mouthfeel that is awesome. Zero warming alcohol as expected of 5%. Overall this is a delicious milk stout! All around nice complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt and vanilla/lactose flavors; very smooth and easy to drink, almost refreshing. Very flavorful with an awesome mouthfeel for the low ABV. A very enjoyable offering.
3.7 Can; pours dark brown with a beige head; aroma of vanilla, coffee, roasted malt, and a hint of chocolate; taste is light sweet with vanilla, chocolate, roasted malt, and coffee; finish is dry with roasted malt and a hint of chocolate
4.0 From a can. Loved the sweet chocolate aroma, smooth body, the vanilla names this a cracking dessert beer.
3.4 Deep brown. Nice head. Vanilla aroma. Sweet flavor with a lot of clove notes. A bit of milk and chocolate. Pretty good.
2.9 Pint can - pours a midnight brown with a thin tan head. Sweet chocolatey aroma along with vanilla cream and lactose. Sweet, roasty, creamy, thin and dessert like. This would be good with real campfire s’mores.
3.2 From the can the pour is dark but light barely permeates the glass, the only light is towards the bottom and is a rich chocolate brown. The head quickly dissipates to nothing but was light brown in color. The aroma chocolate and roasted coffee. The taste is initially sweet rich and smooth, there is a hint of cinnamon in the background and a richness from the vanilla. The finish is almost soda like because of the cinnamon, does not finish like a stout or traditional beer, nor does it leave any overriding flavor notes. The mouthfeel is medium. Overall if I had this without knowing it is a stout, I would not guess it is a stout, it does not finish like one.
3.5 Sampled at rbsg. Dark brown with amber. Big vanilla. Roast and cocoa. Earth and cooked brown sugar. Nuts.
3.6 Marrón muy oscuro con baja espuma buena adherencia. Fenol a vainilla alto, avena moderado alto, malta maltoso tostado moderado, ésteres a frutos negros, ciruela, regalís, chocolate, cacao, crema, lúpulo floral moderado bajo. En boca fenol a vainilla moderado alto, avena moderado alto, malta maltoso tostado moderado,ésteres a chocolate, cacao, café con leche, ciruela negra, bayas,, notas a pan tostado, lúpulo floral bajo, lúpulo de amargor bajo-nulo. Final maltoso seco, cuerpo bajo, baja carbonatación
3.3 Can from Greg (gregwilsonstl) -- cheers! This is a very smooth, creamy stout that starts off moderately sweet and quite vanilla-y. As I got towards the end of my glass I was personally pretty overwhelmed by the sweetness, but it was still pretty good -- at least the vanilla tasted authentic, instead of the fake, cream soda stuff that some brewers use!
4.5 A really nice dessert beer. There probably isn’t a better base beer to start with than Buffalo Sweat for this kind of vanilla beer because it doesn’t overwhelm the chocolate and the vanilla somehow accentuates the slickness of the mouthfeel.
3.6 Pint can (thanks Greg Wilson) on 26th May 2016. Poured (twice) into a lovely Kasteel stemmed glass while sat in the Californian sun. Black bodied with a deep and full head of tan coloured foam on each pour, sadly the head refused to hang around each time and the beer looked like flat cola. Luckily the aroma and taste made up for the looks, Vanilla first, Coffee second and Chocolate third in both the aroma and flavor stakes. Semi-sweet and smooth, not as rich body wise as I thought it might be, but a very pleasant beer none the less.
3.7 On tap, Casual Pint Northshore. Pours black, with a ring of foam. The first thing I smell is actually coffee, with vanilla in the background. Some ashy, burnt toast notes, too. Taste is coffee and chocolate, then vanilla. The vanilla is understated, but definitely there. I like it.
3.4 can. very tasty, easy to drink stout. fantastic vanilla bean finish. mild overall, but quite good
4.5 Can. Dark brown color, clear. Tan foamy head. Lovely bouquet of vanilla, sweet chocolate and light toast. Sweet flavor, coffee ground, vanilla bean and faint wood. Soft finish. Excellent.
3.5 Can. Deep brown body with a frothy tan head, rapidly diminishing. Aroma of roasted malt, chocolate, vanilla, cookie dough. The flavor is moderately sweet and lightly bitter. It finishes moderately sweet and lightly bitter. Medium body, watery/velvety texture, moderate carbonation. Lots of vanilla in the taste along with notes of sweet cocoa powder, light char, chocolate. Slick oatmeal feel.
4.0 16 oz can. Pours nearly black with a beige head that lasts. Aroma is mostly vanilla, some chocolate some roasted malts. Milky sweet stout with a hint of chocolate and lots of vanilla.
3.8 Can. Vanilla, chocolate, oatmeal, malt, and straw aroma. Dark brown with moderate tan head. Sweet chocolate oatmeal cookie, malt, and mildly bitter herbal grass flavor. Medium body - kind of light for the style.
3.5 17 oz can poured into a goblet. The aroma starts strong with creamy vanilla, leather, and subtle lactose that turns to brewed coffee, then roasted coffee, with undertones of chocolate, nuts, and oats. The beer pours a rich, dark raisin brown, with tan, soft foam, cream head that becomes rocky and unstable leaving only light retention and lace. The taste is a medium high sweet and medium light bitter. The texture is oily and slick with a soft fizz carbonation and a medium body. The flavor of creamy lactose and vanilla is initially noted, followed by light, brown ale-like raisin and finishes smooth with a flourish of vanilla molasses and lactose sugar - kinda like a root beer float - and a leather funk. The aftertaste is toasted nuts with a slight bourbon- like hint and lactose.
4.3 Pint can into tulip glass. Pours a dark brown with a small tan head that disappates almost immediately and leaves no lacing. Big vanilla, chocolate, roasted malts, caramel, coffee. Full body, creamy and smooth texture, average carbonation, long finish of malt, vanilla and chocolate. Absolutely delicious!
