Tallgrass Zombie Monkie

Tallgrass Zombie Monkie

Zombie Monkie is a dark, rich porter, carefully brewed for the post-apocalyptic world to come. Crafted with lots of roasty dark chocolate and specialty malts, then inoculated with enough hops to add a floral/citrus character in the finish. It’s hardy, complex, and interesting, because you might be drinking it for a long time.

3.8 Draft - pours almost black with a wispy beige head. Aroma is woody and nutty...A bit smokier on the tongue, nuts, chocolate cake, a nice little pop in the finish that pulls it together nicely. Good.
3.7 Poured from 16 oz can. Pours dark brown with tan head. Aroma is roasted malt with dark chocolate and dark fruits. Flavor is roasted malt with slight smokiness, coffee, dark chocolate with slight dark fruitiness. Roasted finish. Thanks Maxbier for sharing.
3.6 Draft. Deep brown body with a beige head. Aroma of roasted malts, dark chocolate, hint of dark fruit. The flavor is moderately sweet and lightly bitter. It finishes lightly to moderately sweet and lightly to moderately bitter. Medium body, watery/velvety texture, lively carbonation. Taste of chocolate, roast. Good balance between hop bitterness and sweet malts.
3.5 Pours an opaque dark bron with khaki colored head. Roasted malts, cocoa powder, and earthiness on the nose; follows onto the palate. Medium bodied. Finishes with plenty of roasty character and some lingering chocolate.
3.6 On tap at Sigler’s in Tennessee. Excellent looking with a black body and a fine tan head. Nice lacing. Light aroma. Lightly sweet up front but mildly bitter by the finish. Lightly smoky but not overly burnt. Very smooth full body. Near medium carbonation.
3.4 Draft at What’s on Tap HV after proving to everyone I was right: Tallgrass is in Manhattan. A nice porter with medium bitterness from espresso and baking chocolate. Easy drinking but maybe a touch thin.
3.8 Can. Very dark brown with khaki head. Aroma of roast, smoke, chocolate, and a hint of dark fruit. Very roasty, lightly sweet and fruity, and bitter. Medium bodied and smooth. Nicely done.
4.2 Wow - I’ve never had canned beer this good. I might not even have had a porter in a can come to think of it. But this one has a great chocolate and coffee aroma and flavor. The aftertaste is a little citrusy and gives it a nice balance.
3.6 Black pour khaki head. Nose is coffee, roasted malts, light chocolate and bitter. Smooth palate, coffee, more coffee, light chocolate bitter finish
3.6 Deep ruby-brown pour with a tan head. The aroma has milk chocolate and toasted malt. It has a medium body with average carbonation. The taste is mildly sweet with a roasted, dry finish.
3.6 A really nice porter. Pours a dark, dark brown. Malty, roasted flavor. My only downgrade was for a resin like aftertaste.
3.6 On tap old chicago, dark roasted and malted. A little dry chocolate and coffee...
4.0 Interesting Porter. Pours an ink color. Roasted aromas. Starts with an almost light, thin flavor but finishes strong. Unusual.
3.6 Pours almost black with a thick, tan head. Rich burnt malt and chocolate flavors with an underlying sweetness that turns dry at the finish. Just a tiny bit thin on mouth feel but quite drinkable.
3.2 Pours a black color with a huge creamy tan head. Massive lacing. Subtle toasty aroma. Creamy mouth feel. Subtle coffee and chocolate. Not as astringent as most porters. More in line with a stout but one of the better Tallgrass I have tried.
4.6 Beautiful chocolates aroma that pours black like obsidian and a light head. Sharp on the tongue in the best way with lots of roasted malt in balance with sharp, clear hops. This beer rocks my apocalypse.
3.7 Sampled at GABF 2015. Late entry from my tasting notes. Overlooked this one. In the taster dark brown with a light tan head. Nose of roast malts an vanilla. Medium plus body. Flavor is chocolate dark ripe fruit, and the vanilla. Finishes with some citrus and bitterness. Very nice.
3.5 From can at Great Nebraska Beer Fest. Poured dark brown, tan head. Aroma was chocolate, roasted coffee. Taste was burnt, roasted malt, bitter chocolate.
3.2 Can. Pours an opaque black with a high, lacy, mixed-grained, creamy light tan head -- fact is, there’s a lot of head there; almost too much. Nose is subdued by the head, but there’s chocolate, coffee, a touch of coconut, smoke, tobacco, and spices. Dry on the tongue, with good richness; it avoids the pitfall of being too heavy. It’s not imperial, it’s just a porter, and that’s great. Good coffee, baking chocolate, and licorice notes. Long, dry finish. Quite tasty.
3.8 One of my favorite porters. Has the usual dark chocolate, dark roasted coffee, dark-roasted malt along with a nice hops bitterness that balances really well with the malt character. Pretty highly-carbonated for a porter, which adds to making this a unique porter. One of the driest finishes among the porters I’ve tried. I’d call it 80% porter and 20% mild IPA. Great beer.
4.2 This canned brew from a bottle shop poured a medium sized head of foamy brown colored bubbles that were mostly lasting and left behind a no visible carbonation opaque except at the edges black brown colored body. The balanced aroma was malty. The semi-flat mouth feel was tingly at the start and at the finish with a lingering mild roasted malt aftertaste. The yummy flavor contained notes of black malt roasted malt toasted malt burnt malt chocolate brown malt and dark malt. A wonderful best in class brew.
3.5 Shared 16 oz. can. Pours brown with a large beige head. Aroma of roasted malt and coffee. Taste is roasted malt, coffee, and chocolate. Pretty good. Bonus point on overall score for the tactical grip "To prevent slippage while fleeing." The can does indeed have a substance sprayed on it which makes it easier to grip.
3.7 Aroma: intense roastiness with some coffee; Appearance: pitch black with foamy white head that dissipates slowly; Taste: follows nose; more like a stout than a porter; Palate: heavy body with long, roasty finish; Overall: quite good; would buy again.
3.5 Can shared by "AKFaust". Colour...very dark brown with a thick head. Nose...roasted nuts and meat with notes of chocolate and toast. Palate...clean, thin and toasty/rosary with burnt bread, biscuits and a tangy feel. The finish is tight and laden with anise.
3.8 Dark pour, tan head. Nose is charred grain with a whiff of coffee. Bittersweet. Middle is coffee grinds, dark roasted malt, with some molasses. Finish is bitter with a solid grain body.
3.4 On tap at Flying Saucer Anniversary. Pours black with medium frothy beige head that lasts. The aroma is roast, cocoa, dark fruit. Medium body, cocoa, roast, lingering dry finish, good.
3.5 Deep dark brown with a beige head. Nice lacing. Aroma is milk chocolate, roast, and nutty. Taste is sweet chocolate, toffee, nutty, and light roast. Medium light body.
3.2 I had this at Global Brew. Pours black with a tan head. Taste dark chocolate, roasted malt, hint of coffee. I thought this was ok. I wouldn't drink this again.
3.6 16oz can thanks to Bob. Pours a dark brown/almost black color with a finger of creamy khaki head. Aroma of roasted malt, old coffee, metal, caramel, and vanilla extract. Taste of burnt malts and earth up front, followed by bitter coffee beans and cardboard, and finishes with caramel and hints of vanilla.
3.7 It is a nice porter. Nothing really special about it to make it any better than another. Nice color, nice aroma...smooth drinking and not bitter.
