Our latest brew is an Imperial strength Barrel-Aged Scotch Ale. We have taken a traditional beer style and given it a modern day makeover — with a Tempest twist.
Brewed back in September 2012 using smoked malted barley courtesy of Teviot Smokehouse, and fermented using two different yeast strains specially produced for this beer in our brewery, you might be able to tell we’ve given this brew some extra TLC. It’s been cold matured in the brewery for six months in tank, bourbon and sherry casks, and then lovingly blended together into a powerful contemporary ale with plenty of history.
The resulting beer is huge on the nose with a hit of smoked stone fruit, wood, sweet malt, sherry and spice. Bottled and labelled by hand this ale is a rare breed indeed, and with limited availability it won’t be around for long. So get yours while you can.

4.1330ml aged by my friend for 6 months. Murky brown and cloudy due to the oak from the Craigellachie cask. Spicy nose, like a hot curry, but with a fair dollop of mango chutney. Transforms in taste to a cross between a biscuit and a fresh loaf of bread. Palate is slightly watery, though mostly creamy. Presumably slightly hoppy when fresh, but I lack a reference, so I will say that it does have a minor hop influence. Further ageing would likely subdue this further.
Thoroughly excellent, with minor gripes.
4.0Aged for 6 month in cellar.
Pours murky brown with wood particles visible under a bright light.
Nose is like an Indian curry with wine and whisky elements. Spicy in a flavourful way.
Palate is creamy.
Taste we've got very little hops due to the ageing. It's becoming very port-like. Loads of fruit and tannins.
Different.
4.1Aromat głównie suszonych owoców i likieru, jakiegoś miodowo-korzenego, w tle jakieś mniej przyjemne nuty utlenienia (mokry karton?). Solidne.
3.8330ml bottle, courtesy of Chris - cheers mate! Poured into chalice glass, deep garnet red in colour with a thick creamy off white head. Strong malty aroma with hints of fruity wine gums coming through. Thin mouthfeel and good lacing. Mixed malts deliver a rich Dundee cake base with strong notes of sultanas, raisins and honey evident in the mouth. Slight hop resin gives an earthy flavour to the light bitter aftertaste which fades rather fast under the malt onslaught. Finish is malty and powerful with strong boozy flavours of sweet sherry and mead burning on the palate with radiant prickly heat. Strong flavours of syrupy raisins, dates and wood smoke come through in the palate. Not for the faint hearted this but its a classic Old Ale in style - I loved it!
3.8Pours hazy brown with low light tan head. Aroma of nuts, dried fruit, light peats, caramel. Taste is sweet, vanilla, oak, mellow peats and a roasty finish. Medium bodied and smooth with soft carbonation.
4.0Pours a dark brown with a low off white head. Aromas of caramel, raisins, figs, dates, oak and barrel notes. Taste is caramel and oak notes, muscovado sugar, raisins, slight smoke and peat, dried fruit. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with moderate carbonation.
