Terrapin Midnight Project Depth Charge Espresso Milk Stout

Terrapin Midnight Project Depth Charge Espresso Milk Stout

Terrapin Midnight Project Brew Two 2009. Sometime around midnight in a city nobody can agree on, the idea for Terrapin and Left Hand to brew a collaboration beer was born. Depth Charge is the second in the series of one-time releases between the two breweries. Be wary of the calm before the storm. This creamy, deeply delicious milk stout will seduce you into submission while the explosion of hand roasted gourmet espresso will blow you into next week. We Shall Drink in the breweries. We Shall Drink in the pubs, We Shall Drink the the comfort of our homes. We Shall Never Surrender.

3.6 22 fl oz bottle. Pours dark brown with a small tan head. Aroma is roasted coffee and toffee dark malty. Coffee herbal, dark toffee and caramelish. Slight sweet and roasted malty. Lingering toffee to coffee. Bitter and roasted finish.
3.4 Bottle 65 cl. Courtesy of wavers1. Pours an opaque black with a light brown head. Heavy, heavy dusty coffee aroma. Medium body, sweet roast and quite some coffee - almost ashy. Some malt astringency. 230211
2.8 Limited release brew. Pours into my snifter with a pitch black, though there are hints of ruby brown on the edges when held to light. The head is tan and when it recedes some decent lacing is left behind. Smell is heavy on the espresso, there are hints of sweet malt too. There is also hints of cardboard and soap. The mouthfeel is thin and so is the flavor. There is a strong coffee hit but other than that there is a bit of soy sauce and some metallic flavor. THe lactose is there and provides some tang. This is an underwhelming brew, especially for a limited edition collaboration release. Serving type: bottle Reviewed on: 12-23-2009 05:36:49
3.2 In short: A cold espresso with bubbles and a glass of milk. It is what it is. How: Bottle 22oz. Exact age unknown, probably about 1 year old. Sent to me by rgtravers, thanks a lot Ryan The look: Black body topped by a very small beige head In long: The nose is unsurprisingly mainly espresso but also with a little nougat in the back. Taste is very straightforward. This is espresso, old coffee filter, strong lactic character (very much milk), some oily tar, light roastiness. A good beer but a bit too milky for me to be more than moderately enjoyable. Coffee and alcohol, the two things that separates us from the animals.
3.6 Poured into a snifter. Huge thanks to stakem who surprised me with a bottle of this at the Splinter Blue release. 4.0 A: Black color. Two fingers of creamy/frothy hybrid medium brown head with average retention and touches of spotty lacing. 4.5 S: Espresso and roasted barley are most powerful in this. However, it isn’t overly roasty as there is a great balancing sweetness. Lots of sweet chocolate and the lactose is quite evident. This is like a mocha coffee with cream. Everything is in great proportion. Good complexity and every aroma is complementary to the overall product. 4.0 T: The flavor is really good, but it needs some more strength. Part of the problem comes from the mouthfeel being too light. Aside from intensity, taste mirrors the nose. Good balance between espresso, roasted barley, sweet chocolate, and lactose. Some toffee in there too. 3.0 M: Light body. Good moderate carbonation. Could be a hell of a lot creamier for what they were going for. Goes down very easy. The body on this is simply way too light, especially for a beer with lactose. I was looking for something thick and rich and I didn’t get that. I definitely prefer all stouts to have a heavier medium to heavy body and especially beers of this nature. There’s nothing across the board defective about the mouthfeel, it just isn’t what I prefer. 3.0 D: Awesome nose, great flavor profile, but the mouthfeel sucks. This could have been one hell of a beer. Instead, it’s just a good one. Serving type: bottle Reviewed on: 09-25-2010 04:46:27
3.7 22 oz bottle and served in Expedition snifter: Pours basically jet black with small but initially creamy head along with some oily tears, spotty lace however. The aroma is heavy on the roasted and charred character, plenty of espresso vapours along with some bakers chocolate, fig, rumballs, walnut, and leathery earthy tones. I do find some herbal hop tome attempted to free itself from the coffee and malt overtones. Oh, some lactic milk character does appear but much less than expected, maybe a good thing? The taste follows suit right to the core, massive espresso overtones, charred, astrengent, bitter, oily and earthy. All the rest of the palate character are merely bit players, chocolate, nut, liquorice, milk, acid, and light handed hop bitterness. Okay, this one is a bit one dimensional much like the Moo-Hoo, but unlike the last Terrapin, this kept me interested longer. The mouth feel is thinned out by the coffee (expected honestly) with moderate carbonation and ashy finish. I do wish this had a bit more "sweet stout character" for balance and a heavier mouth feel but overall I would say a find effort in the end.
3.8 22 oz bottle compliments of Shwarzbock, thank you Jared! Midnight black w/a lasting tan head of fine bubbles. Initial aroma is burnt, acrid, dark malt and espresso coffee like. Hints of smokiness, caramel, and toasted malt at it warms. Also roasty coffee flavors. There is also a bit of herbal/spicy hop that comes into play. Malted milk ball chocolate aroma also as it warms. Bitter and burnt flavor up front with coffee and sweet mid toasted malt mid palate. Light caramel and brown sugar notes, with roasty, assertive espresso flavor throughout. Mildly sweet with a bit of dark grain acidity lends to the overall balance. Finish is mildly sweet and coffee like. Toasted malt and caramel aftertaste. The body is fuller medium, lighter medium carbonation with a bit of bite adding a bit to acidity, and dry mouthfeel. Not a huge fan of espresso, or coffee for that matter, but it works well in stouts, especially sweet stouts, and this one in particular. The bittterness of the dark grains and espresso are tempered by the sweetness of the malts for a very well balanced, flavorful beer! Well done!
3.6 22 oz. bottle from dbsdelight- thanks again, Dan! 2009 vintage. Pours an opaque dark brown color, basically black, with a small tan head. As soon as I brought this up to the nose, I could tell it was starting to turn; some oxidation otherwise holds back a nice aroma of espresso, milk sugar, cream, chocolate, and roasted barley malts. The flavor follows suit well, once again with a little oxidation holding back an otherwise nice, smooth, sweet stout. Medium-bodied, with a sweet, roasty mouthfeel and mild carbonation. This is still pretty good, but if you still have one around, drink it now.
4.4 Brew Two, Vintage 2009. 22oz bottle. with gold foil. Pours the darkest black you have ever seem. Black times infinity. Dark brown head. Looks like... coffee. Aroma of green beans, loads of roasted coffee, espresso, Italian roast, you name it. Dark. A touch of chocolate nibs under all of the coffee. Flavor of coffee, roasted burnt barley, coffee, chocolate, coffee, mocha, café con leche. What an overlaod! Loads of coffee. Smells like roast, tastes like a coffee drink. Creamy texture. ABV? What alcohol. Ohh this is a big one. I LOVE IT!
4.1 Thanks to djrn for sharing this bottle, which I had about given up on searching for. The beer pours an inky black color with a tan head. The aroma is strong on the coffee and chocolate. I also get a little bit of cayenne pepper in the aroma. The flavor is chocolate, coffee, milk, cream and roasted malt. A delicious beer. Medium to thick mouthfeel and medium carbonation.
4.1 Bottle - Yum yum yum yum. Pours dark black with a small foamy tan head. Sweet coffee and milk on the nose, big and roasty with only a bit of ash, unlike the much harsher KBS. A bit watery in the mouth, but it doesn’t matter as the whole thing comes across like iced coffee, with fresh grounds, vanilla, and sweet cream. Finishes with more pungent freshly ground coffee. Silky and smooth. Fantastic.
3.7 Shared at a local tasting. Saw the bottle in the lineup for the night and it was the one I was looking forward to the most. It did not disappoint. The smoothness and sweetness of the milk stout blended almost perfectly with coffee. Great beer I would drink again anytime!
3.8 Bottle: Pours a very dark brown with a small tan head. Aroma is mostly cocoa, followed by roast and coffee. Flavor is really smooth and rich with coffee, light chocolate, and moderate roast. Huge, silky mouthful. Light bittersweetness in the tail and the coffee really lingers nicely. Simple, straightforward, and well done.
4.4 Bottle at GLBF, thanks Mike! Pours deep thick black with espresso colored head. Huge espresso, chocolate, milk aroma that had a touch of roast. Taste right up front was a blast of espresso, melding into chocolate, vanilla, and some lactose sweet that finishes bitter from the coffee. I love coffee brews, and this one really fit the bill. Awesome.
3.3 Strong coffee on the nose. Deep black in appearance. The flavor is coffee, cream/milk. The beer is thin in body, especially for this style. Not great. Shit, if I want a cup of ice coffee, I’ll go to Dunkin Donuts.
4.1 (bottle - 22 oz) Dark black pour with a thick tan head. Rich and roasty aroma with a lot of coffee and some chocolate notes. Flavor starts with a smooth and rich roasted malt and coffee flavor. Sweet and silky chocolate flavors come in near the middle with a mildly roasted and sweet finish. Couldn’t really detect the milk, but it might be what toned down the carbon roasted flavor of the finish. High quality.
3.7 Bottle shared at the 4th release of CDC. Poured a deep dark brown with a full bubbly brown head. Aroma of weak coffee, toast, espresso beans and evaporated milk. Creamy medium to full bodied with soft carbonation. The flavor is a bit stronger then the aroma let on. Notes of coffee, earth, espresso beans, burnt malts and some dark chocolate. Yet again another side project winner from Terrapin.
3.9 Bottle 2009 vintage thanks to JohnGalt1. pours out a dark brown topped with a nice tan head. Aroma of coffee, sweet milk chocolate, vanilla, and rich malts. Taste was much as the aroma lots of coffee and bitter chocolate. Along with some vanilla and sweet roast.
3.8 A damn fine beer, I would drink it until my liver gave way. Nothing offensive at all, just beer bliss. Would get again fo sho. I think with the name I was expecting more, it was nice though, not too sweet, good coffee and cocoa.
4.5 Appearance: This beer poured a dark brown, blackish color with a tan head. Lacing present throughout. Smell: Espresso. Espresso. Espresso. And chocolate. Taste: WOW. Amazing. Tastes like espresso and chocolate but not in an offensive way like many coffee beers can be. Perhaps the lactose helps balance it out properly. Mouthfeel: Very smooth beer. Not as heavy as one would imagine. Carbonation is minimal. Overall: I hate coffee but this beer blew my mind. THIS is the perfect after dinner beer. I only wish I had purchased more. Oh well.
4.0 Wonderful nose of coffee, espresso, roaste, sweet chocolatey notes, a touch of sugars. Pours dark brown almost black with a creamy beige head. The flavor is full of espresso, softer sweet sugary notes, a touch of dark chocolate, and more coffee in the finish. Medium body, medium carbonation, dry/sweet finish. Extremely enjoyable beer.
3.9 Draft @ Isaac Newtons. Black pour with tan head. Aroma full of espresso, sweet and roasted malts. Flavor is coffee, some milk, sweet malts and chocolate notes.
3.9 Bottle from CAH and Capone’s. Pours jet w 2 f brown head and great lacing. Nose is huge fresh roasted coffee, dark malt, hops, jalapeno oil. Tastes of big roasty coffee, dark malt, bittering hops. This one is a little brother of Bell’s Java Stout, and gets a little cloying and hot late, but starts off like a ball of fire.
3.7 Received this bottle from the very generous trader, thanks! Pours a deep black color with a nice tan head. Aroma is of coffee and sweet malts. First sip is not as coffee tasting as I thought it would be but good nonetheless. Sweet and smooth through out. Absolutley no bitter taste at all. Has a chocolate milk taste to it. Great mouthfeel, medium/light feel. Overall, I was hoping for a litte bit more coffee flavor out of this but other than that it is a very tasty and smooth beer!
3.9 22oz bottle, thanks wavers1! Clear deep ruby with a decent tan head, fair retention. Tons of dark coffee in the nose with some vanilla and chocolate behind. Big chocolatey flavor with plenty of coffee, light vanilla notes and sweet lactose. Bitterness peaked at a 3 in the semi-dry finish. Smooth full body with moderate carbonation. Good beer.
4.4 nice black pour, great sweet coffee aroma with vanilla, oatmeal and chocolate. nice light but full body. excellent taste, creamy to the max, smooth, awesomeness.
3.8 Pours black with beige head. Aroma of chocolate, lactose sugar, coffee, candy, and toast. Huge lactose/chocolate flavor with added espresso. Creamy, milkshake like mouthfeel. Good stuff
3.9 Bottle sampled at DLD 2010. Dark brown pour with a thin beige head. Nose of coffee, chocolate, roast and cream. Creamy chocolate and coffee flavor giving way to a roasty bitter finish. Very nice.
3.9 22, capped and foiled. Thanks Brandon and Derek! Pours black with a scant dark tan head. Lots of rich coffee and roast on the nose. Creamy medium body with understated carb. Plenty of sweet roast and generously, oily complex coffee on the mid-palate. Long dark earthy finish. Great coffee impy.
3.5 Thanks bvc! acidic espresso juice aroma, very sharp. very smooth body, light with gentle creamy sweet coffee and cream.
