Terrapin Side Project Capt'n Krunkles Black IPA

Terrapin Side Project Capt'n Krunkles Black IPA

Legend had is Capt’n Krunkles is the most feared pirate on the high seas. No one has seen him, his ship, or the great beer his band of pirates drinks has lived to tell about it. Until now. Made with a bombardment of hops to defeat your tastebuds in battle and all the black malt you can stand before walking the plank, this Black I.P.A. will make it worth going down with the ship.

3.7 12 oz bottle of Capt’n Krunkles Black IPA poured black and opaque with a good size, durable tan head that left splotchy lacing. Aroma; pronounced hops with faint malts. Nonetheless, appealing. Flavor: more balanced. Unlike many black IPA;s, IMO, this one successfully integrates the substantial hop load with a substantial amount of medium and dark malts. Its success is due, I suspect, to not going overboard with the ingrediants. Terrapin has also done a fine job of matching the malts to the hops.
3.9 Bottle best enjoyed by 1 (Month) 2 (Week) 15 (Year). Nose with lightly astringent scorched and burned black malt, pine and spice form the hops, lighter citrus and faint rind, mostly about the roast, though. Pours very dark brown with a dense tan head. Taste is dry with stouty black malt, medium bitterness but it’s smooth and integrated, very little prickle or sting anywhere here, even the carbonation is soft. Head develops into a more Belgian fluffer over time, which does seem to match the malt bill better. Fullish body, and surprisingly drinkable. Alc is hidden, clean throughout, and a pretty decent balance between two somewhat disparate elements (it’s reasonably close to halfway between). Smooth and souflul!
3.4 From a bottle from lazy dog. Pours dark brown with copper undertones. Tastes like bitter roasted malt, bitter hops, burnt toast, and light citrus. Light body and low carbonation. Smells like sweet malt, toast, and light citrus hops.
3.5 Bottle shared by sonnycheeba. Pours an opaque dark cola brown with a thin layer of tan head. Aroma of hops and some roasted malts. Taste of burnt malts and bitterness.
3.6 Bottle. Pours dark brown with creamy beige head. Aroma is roasted and chocolate malts, faint ash, light raisins, and some earthiness. Flavor is dry roast malts forward with medium earthy and chocolate bitterness, and some faint dark fruit notes; dry finish. Medium body and carbonation.
3.5 Fresh bottle from jbruner. Pours midnight black with little to no head. Aroma is s’mores, a bit of chocolate, fir tree, pine cone. Taste is sweet, light/medium body with decent amount of combination. Interesting play between the dark, roasty/chocolatey malt and hops (what style?). Not bad.
3.6 Dark brown pour. Instantly nice aroma of chocolate and citrus. Taste played well together with bitter hops and roasted Malta balanced. Good carbonation and medium feel.
3.8 this was a very different beer, I really enjoyed it. Loads of malts, slight chocolate flavor with hop bitterness coming through the back, loads of citrus with some grassy notes. Not as heavily hopped as I would have thought this beer to be
3.6 6/26/2010. From bottle. Black with a tan head. Hoppy aromas with dark malt, citrus, tropical fruit. Bitter flavors with good balance all the way.
3.4 Reviewed 9-13-10. A couple of BA traders have asked me about this beer when I told them I could get Terrapin. I bought one for someone, and then picked one up for myself to see what all the Hooplah was about: Ap: Pours black as night, with a 1/2 inch head that left instantly, and carbonation to spare. Ar: Not really strong in the aroma department, but what I’m getting reminds me of Coca-Cola - slightly bitter, with a hop sizzle. T: Not at all vicious, actually very malty, and much smoother than I expected. P: Frothy lacing and very creamy in texture. Very soothing. O: Nothing really special about this one, but the beer itself is not too pretentious. Also, I REALLY love the bottle art!
3.8 Bottle, probably sat on this one too long. But it has aged well. Choclatety flavor, roasty, hops have diminished. Very flavorful, great mouthfeel, oily. Real nice.!
4.0 Bomber bottle from Dchmela, ( thanks Dave ). Nice black pour with a fine tan head. Roasted barly goodness with a nice balance of hops with a little wheat. Every sip was a pleasure.
3.7 These beers usually smell better than they taste, in my opinion, and this one was no exception. Rich chocolatey and citrusy nose comes with a palate that is just slightly too bitter and a flavor profile that clashes more than I’d like. Still, pretty darn good and another impressive side project.
3.0 Acquired in a trade. Enjoyed in a Hill Farmstead Glass. A - Gorgeous hazy wheat appearance with a golden light appearance. No head whatsoever. S - Gigantic Bavarian wheat scent. Fresh wheat and light apricot scent. Very mellow hop scent. Loads of pineapple and lemon zest. Very nice and harmonious. Great balance really. T - Yeah. Hard to tell a big difference between the hops and the wheat. It’s basically 50/50 with a big dry german yeast. Pretty well balanced but a very dry wheat taste on the finish. M - 100% carbonation. Very borderline medium / light body. Big wheat and lemony finish. O - Nice beer. It’s not a great wheat IPA but it’s decent.. 81/100.
3.8 Brown black pour with tan head and lace. Resiny hops, light chocolaty roasted malt. Roasted malt, resiny hops, a hinto sweet on the start with a dry finish. Medium body with smooth carbonation. A hinto watery finish. Pretty good beer.
3.5 A deep dark ipa with a thin lacing light mocha head. In aroma, bitter chocolate with dank resinous floral hops, light mineral notes, light caramel and coffee, light oxydation, OK. In mouth, sweet chocolate malt with dark fruits, molasses, alcohol warmth, light coffee, pleasant. Bottle 9 years old.
3.5 Bomber courtesy of Doodler (thanks Scott) pourd a clear dark brown with a lasting tan head. Aromaof roastiness, grapefruit, earthiness, light pine and a hint of charcoal. Palate was medium bodied and smooth with a dry finish. Flavors of roastiness, charcoal, grapefruit, earthiness and a hint of pine with a smooth dry lingering bitter roasty finish.
3.3 Very deep brown, a little ruby light shines through. Nose is roast, caramel & piney hop. Flavor is caramel, nice roast, big pine character with some tropical hop notes. Finish is bittersweet chocolate & pine with lingering caramel. I recognize that this bottle isn’t the freshest in the world but I prefer it to fresh samples of Capt’n Krunkles that I had.
3.7 Bottle. Pours a black color wit a small tan head. Has a roasted malty caramel coffee and hoppy aroma. Roasted malty hoppy chocolate flavor. Has a roasted malty hoppy bitter chocolate finish.
3.8 22 fl oz bottle. Pours dark brown to black with a small tan head. Aroma is citrusy hoppy and dark roasted malty. Solid bitter, grapefruity and dark roasted malty flavoured. Bone dry and toasted dark malty finish.
3.7 Bottle at Papsø. Clear dark brown coloured with a medium sized beige head. Fruity aroma of caramel, hops, pine needles and liquorice with notes of cookies. Fruity flavour of caramel, hops and pine needles with notes of liquorice. Hoppy finish.
3.6 trade with forgetfu clear dark brown, smooth light brown head. nice hoppy and roasted stuffy aroma. flavor is malty, dark caramelly, hoppy, roasted stuff, hop flavor is very good, dry, and bitter.
3.7 Bottled. A dark brown beer with a red shine under a brown head.. The aroma has notes of hops, roasted malt, and over ripe fruits. The flavor is sweet with roasted malt, wood, hops, and lemon, leading to a bitter finish.
3.4 Bottle 65 cl. Courtesy of Pinball. Pours pitch black with a light brown head. Fresh aroma hops in the nose combined with sweet roast vanilla - licorice allsorts. Medium body, again sweet roast and a dry and hoppy finish from both hops and roasted malts. But in general not a great Black IPA. 230511
3.7 sample at RBSG 2010 - Pours very dark brown and smells of pine heavy hops. The flavor has the expected dark roast malt as well as the ample hops of an IPA. The pine of the aroma continues as a tasty accent. Medium bodied. Very good.
3.7 Pours black with a tall tan head. The citrus hop aroma combines with a soft roast malt characteristic of a good porter. Hoppy, yet dark and malty flavor. Some bitter coffee on the back end. Nice medium body.
3.7 bottle thanks to kiefdog. poured dark brown with ruby highlights and a beige head. aroma was coffee, meat, chocolate, brownie, and dark roast. flavor was coffee, dark roast, chocolate, and pine. light body with high carbonation.
3.2 So elusive and rare! I played a losing game of hide and seek with this guy for awhile. Then I picked one up at my local store, sadly in non-growler format; although, I did consider buying a few and pouring them into a growler just to taste the totally awesome rarity effect that sitting inside 64 ounces of glass apparently has on this beer. I was too dazzled at the tasting opportunity to review at the time. From notes. Pours near black with a bit of head. Nose is some citrus hops and a good deal of roast. Taste is slightly bitter and dry with roast. Hints of coffee. Nice citrus and a bit of pine. Medium body. Pretty good. It’d take on the good captain again. 3.3 Bottle from ibrew2or3. Thanks! Nose is roasty with notes of dark chocolate sweetness here and there as well as some muted hops(flat earthy, and lightly papery notes). Pours dark brown almost black, nice head and lace. The flavor is more roasted malts, darker sweetness, some residual sugar. Light earthy bitterness, hops are flat and almost stale and this reminds me more of a foreign stout or something along that line right now. Not bad, just not really what i was expecting from a Black IPA.
3.8 taste is mildly hoppy with a growing smoky finish. clean and silky on the palate. good lacing. strong coffee finish, but still very smooth and inviting. rock on.
