Terrapin Side Project Hopzilla Double IPA

Terrapin Side Project Hopzilla Double IPA

Terrapin Side Project 12 is none other than the fearless Hopzilla Double IPA. This hoptastic creature clocks in at 110 IBUs and has all the hop explosions of a B-rate monster movie.

Made with 100% Maris Otter malt to back up the barrage of hop bitterness, flavor and aroma, this beast knows no boundaries. With all of this hoppy goodness packed into one beer, we wouldn’t have called it by any other name.

3.5 Pours cloudy orange. Nose reminds me of a grapefruit drink. Some citrus and caramel taste - alcohol present, too. Hops present from start to finish - more of a constant bitter undertone rather than a bite on the finish. It's good - but not as good as Firestone Walker or Dogfish 90 imperial IPA.
3.8 Had this in a bottle. Pours to a solid gold bottle with a citrusy aroma to it with a medium body. Not much carbonation with a small head o it. The only downside for me I was expecting this to be a bit hoppier, though it has a nice grapefruit taste to it
4.3 Reviewed from notes. Rcvd in trade. This was poured into a snifter and a tulip. The appearance was a nice looking hazy pale orange color with some light brown tinges running lightly around the sides of the glass. The head was about a light one fingered white foaminess sticking for a good minute before it died in a lumpy sort of way. There’s a good amount of lacing clinging all over the place (nice show!). The smell had a bitter/dank/citrusy and somewhat resinous grapefruitiness running all over my nose and pummeling it into submission as to confusing it with bitter hops. The taste had a nice citrusy sweetness running over my tastebuds. On the palate, this one sat about a medium on the body with a sessionability closing in on perhaps one or two beers of this in a night. Overall, my final assessment on this one, well, its a great DIPA. I liked this one a lot and at the moment think its Terrapin’s best one (makes me wanna move to GA).
4.1 amber color; citrusy hop aroma; nice citrusy, piney hop flavor; medium-bodied malt base with mild caramel and bread notes
3.2 This is one of those IIPAs that is really more of a hoppy barleywine. I like hoppy barleywines but if you are looking for something dry, you might steer clear of this. It pours a nice orangle color and is slightly cloudy w/ just a long-lasting soap bubble head. There is pineapple and melon in the nose. A great deal of sweetness brings out some citrus notes which then brings to mind orange liqueur. This is definitely a bit sticky on the palate but there is some mild fine-bubbled carbonation which helps make it feel creamy rather than heavy. There is a good bit of bitterness in the finish but it still comes off as mostly sweet. Definitely, this is a slow sipper and even twelve ounces of it gets to be too much. People will laught at this suggestion but I think this might be a good beer for aging. My main problem w/ it is as far as I have one is that it is simply sweet rather than having malt complexity. If some age brought out some nutty sherry-like notes it would be a real winner. As it is, it is only OK, really. It tastes good but it is too simple to be interesting enough to want to spend as much time as this takes to drink to drink it.
4.5 A new favorite. Clear, honey-colored, brief head. Might have some Citra hops (pine/cat pee - great aroma). Some sweet lemon-candy flavor to balance the hop bitterness. Wonderful, balanced - reeeeeally good!!
4.1 Pours a beautiful brick orange. Soft light emanates form the body of the beer to show off golden yellow hues and various shades of hazed orange. Fat head of khaki foam that lasted well. Nose is tangy ripe pineapple. A bit of sugary malt. Some candied orange peel. Earthy pine. A bit of bread and spice. Dank. No alcohol on this nose. Taste follows the nose all the way. It becomes complex as it warms. The fruits all have their turn on the palate. Pink grapefruit, tangy sweet pineapple, mango and orange. The booze is just a bit of warmth int he swallow. The malt comes up a bit impertinent in this one to offer some chewy bread. The bitter is deep in the beer and is part of the mouthfeel. (BRAVO) Creamy, lingering sweet finish with a surprising crispness and one last bit of bread before you are done. Outstanding!
3.8 12 oz. Lightly hazy orange-amber with a lasting disc of cream on top. Aroma is tangerine, apricot, resin, caramel, grapefruit and buttery toast. Tastes of toffee, citrus zest, mint, tangerine, booze and earthy toasted whole grain bread. Some starchy rice and pithy wood in the long finish as well. Medium-heavy body is a bit minty and boozy, but has a nice balance with a long dry finish. Soft medium carbonation.
3.8 Poured from a bottle it is a clear with a slight head the aroma is citrus and the taste is smooth bitter citrus flavor that lingers on the pslate
3.7 From a 12 oz bottle shared at home. Pours a clear copper with an off white head. Resin aroma. Flavors of orange and caramel. Not too boozy for the style. Bitter finish.
3.5 12oz bottle, thanks to Homer321. Bottled labeled 10.3%. Shared with robotopera. Mostly hazy orange color. Thin off-white head. Good dots and ropes of lace. Ehhh... Really musty and metallic I think. Tastes a little oxidized to me. Definitely some bigger piney hop, some herbal character. Robby prefers this one to the STLIPA we just sampled prior. Again flavor is kind of mild on this one, he says, but it lingers a little bit better. I think there’s a distinct taste that might suggest that this may not be as fresh as it could be, but that could be in my head. Some caramel, light spicy bite to it. An uncomfortable tingle up front when sipping, initially... "Kind of like licking a 9-volt battery," as Robby puts it. Bigger body. Lighter carbonation. Lightly soft. Kind of dry finish. Overall, though, not a bad DIPA. Big piney hop, big bitterness, hides the alcohol reasonably well for 10%. Got to give it a point for that. Robby says he doesn’t get any booziness. He gave it a 4.0. This grew on me as I went. I went through it without much trouble. Robby continues, "A lot of oak on the aroma. A little bit of must, but not to the point of being offensive. Palate-wise for the aroma, it’s very well-balanced. You can do a full inhale, and there’s nothing that’s overpowering any other aspect of it." Wisdom.
3.6 Lazy Dog Growler bottle, 2014 version where the "side project" label has been dropped. Nice copper color with a foamy khaki head of tight bubbles and sheets of lacing. Aroma is sweet malt, simple syrup and only a hint of hop bitterness. The flavor is actually fairly gentle with big note of citrus orange. Also no real hint of the 10+ ABV. Well balanced for the IBU count.
4.1 Dank, chewy, citrus, resin, huge hops, sweet malt backbone, nice warmth from ABV, highly recommended.
4.8 Pours hazy orange with an off-white head. Smells of citrus and solid bitterness. Taste is citrus, hints of sweetness, and a strong bitter backbone. Full-bodied with a smooth texture and soft mouth-carbonation, Terrapin Hopzilla Double IPA finishes with a surprising lingering sweetness.
3.7 Comes together well. Seems like some Belgian yeast because there are floral elements here. Finishes with light sweetness. Pours amber with good head and lacing, soft carbonation. Comes together well. Thanks to the people next to me for a taste of this.
3.2 12oz bottle from The Beer Store Wilson. Monster Beer Tour 2014 Vintage. Orange hue, murky clarity with mostly diminishing fizzy off-white head. Virtually no lacing. Heavy grapefruit aroma, but also pine, lemon and bubble gum. Moderate bitter grapefruit up front with a moderate astringent citrus finish. Watery texture, flat carbonation. I was excited about this then quickly disappointed.
4.1 This monster was unleashed on my palate! Boldly bitter and resiny with a wonderful balanced malt base. The sweetness of this DIPA blew me away. This beer is destroying everything in its path tonight.
3.3 12 oz. bottle from Tipples. No date. Pours slightly hazy dark orange color with a small slightly off white head. Aroma of caramel malts, sweet grapefruit, some pine, stale hops it seems like. Smells nice but a little dull with respect to the hops. Flavor is a big malt bomb, low to medium bitter, orange rind, super sweet syrupy caramel. I hope this is just old but I thought it was a relatively recent release for the 12 oz. Big hefty body, medium carbonation, slick and resinous. This was a disappointment.
3.4 Draft. Pours orange with decent head. Aroma is citrus - pineapple, mango, orange peel. Some decent resin/pine notes in the flavor mixed with the citrus. I’m getting pineapple here again. Lingering hop bitterness on the palate. The malt is noticeable and plays well against the hops. Decent and drinkable.
3.6 12 oz bottle. Orangish hue with white head. Nose of a hop bomb with citrus and floral notes. Taste follows the nose but with less citrus and a little more pine. Average malt backbone for the style.
3.4 Pours dark orange with a sweet hop aroma with a hint of booze. Flavor is very sweet and citrusy, however not very piney. Finishes way too sweet
4.0 Bottle pour. Cloudy orange with white head. Smells of apricots and malts. Upfront is melon and strawberry with a hint of citrus. Towards the back develops into a sweet burst of the pines (apples and needles).
3.5 Lots of malt and tropical fruit in this one. Malt base supports well. Not a typical West Coast hop mixture but we’ll balanced. Tropical hop flavor lasts a long time. Nice beer.
3.5 (Bottle ). Pours an orange complexion with thin head and some lacing. Sweet floral and hop aroma. Flavor is grapefruit with some alcohol noted
3.9 Bottle: fantastic sweet floral nose which transitions to a sweet hoppy dipa. A fruity and hoppy brew.
3.8 Pours dark copper amber with an inch of fizzy and soapy off-white head. Aroma is caramel malt, pine, sweet tropical citrus. Taste starts with an earthy malt base and evolves into a complex tropical citrus (orange peel, pineapple) and piney hops. Aftertaste amps the bitterness a bit with warming. Alcohol pretty well disguised. Not as sweet as many DIPAs and not as bitter/hoppy as others. I think the malt predominates a bit here. I like my DIPAs and this is above average.
3.5 Yet another unheralded DIPA that is better than HopSlam. Excellent sweet and hoppy flavor.
4.0 Pours a clear gold with light white head. Has a strong floral hop aroma with some caramel. Taste is sweet with caramel and sweet malts, and is followed with with some floral hops, but not overwhelming.
3.6 12oz bottle in a tulip. Pours deep, transparent copper with a lacy, off-white head. Aroma of floral and citrusy hops, a lot of caramel and pale malts, and some dough. Flavor the same with a nice blend. Average texture. Could be hoppier and less malty.
3.8 Another of the "Huh? I haven’t rated this yet?" variety. Pours a slightly red for style amber. Scent is citrus, champagne, and earth. Big bop bite is half hop half carbonation. Back end malt is atypical of usual sweetness found in IIPA’s. Lively on the tongue. Bottle - Ale Yeah! - Decatur, GA
