Terrapin Side Project Roggenrauchbier

Terrapin Side Project Roggenrauchbier

At Terrapin we enjoy our rye and our smoke...beers. Volume 2 in the "Side Project" series combines a Rogenbier and a Rauchbier, two German classics.

Roggen means rye, Rauch means smoke, and bier means beer. We love them all! Introducing Terrapin’s Roggenrauchbier.

With a slight hint of spice from the rye malt and a pleasant overtone from the smoked malt this beer has two great tastes that taste great together.

3.9 Bottle sampled on 6/28/08: Pours a transparent dark copper amber with a thin-lacing light tan head. Aroma of grainy rye and nice smoky caramel sweetness. Body starts fairly full and toasty caramely sweet with a good balance of smokiness before a slightly drier bittersweet doughy finish. Very authentic and true to style, an enjoyable brew.
3.8 This pours up a ruby-tinted amber color. A head of almost one-fingers worth of light tan colored foam sits on top. It fades to a creamy surface covering, which stays around until the end of the glass. Lacing is foamy and slightly slick. The smell is almost exactly what you’d expect. A nice level of smokiness, along with a good amount of rye spiciness. I also get some mild hints of roasted malts. Some light maltiness hits first. It is then almost obliterated by a smooth and mild, yet dominant, smokiness. At about the midway point you get a nice level of rye spiciness, combined with the smoke, which carries on through to the finish. It’s a nice, medium-bodied brew. It has a medium-to-full level of carbonation. This makes it just a little bit too active, I think. This is a brew with a good level of flavor, that never overwhelms the palate. It is under 6.0%abv and that helps it remain quite drinkable. Very nice.
3.2 Big thanks to markwise. Aroma spicy, licorice with a whiff of bacon. Flavor is a clean spicy base, a bit of residual yeastiness to it. Initial bacon flavors fade quickly, leaves the remainder of the glass clean, spicy, not particularly complicated. Medium bodied, smooth drinking.
4.1 Pours a dark chestnut brown color with golden orange/amber edges when held to a light source and a thin 1 finger yellowish beige head. Great retention, slowly fading into a lasting cap that lasts throughout, leaving sporadic chunks of lacing behind. Smokey roasted malts dominate the aroma with hints of smoke, charcoal, butane, barbecued bacon and more smoked chocolate malts. Wow! Sweet rye flavor balances out the smokey barbecue charcoal bacony maltiness. There are some subtle hops but they are overshadowed by the burnt/smokey flavor. With all of the smokiness it is still somewhat balanced by the hops and sweetness up front. Not a complete rauch bomb by any means. This is an excellent beer and a very successful experiment that I wish they would turn into a year round offering. Highly recommended for fans of smoked/rauch beers but you should expect it to be a bit different.
3.5 Strange and interesting. The aroma is smokey (think campfire as opposed to stove fire) with hints of malt, rye, and even a slight dishsoap aroma. The flavor is lightly tart and malty with a definite almost salty bacon smokey taste that is subtle but you can’t ignore (like smoked cheese). High carbonation, you can tell tell when you pour; not from the head, but from the crazy eruption of bubbles.
3.9 Bottle courtesy of ericandersnavy. Pours a hazy burgundy with a small white head. The nose is of a nice, sweet, smoky, light malt; beautiful. Light-bodied and softly effervescent with a lingering, moderately smoky finish. Sweet, lightly spicy smoked malt with a mildly sweet and drying finish. This is a very nice beer and my second favorite smoked lager behind Aecht Schlenkerla Fastenbier (and that is saying something).
2.9 Medium brown with tints of red and gold. Aromas of cherries, fruit, must, smoke, bacon, and rye. Upon tasting its difficult to get past the overwhelming flavors of f’ing smoke. Still in the background you can pick up hints of bacon and malt. Flavors are overly subtle to the point of being weak thanks to the overbearing smoke. Mehhhh
3.2 Beer is a smoky brown color with a non existent head. Smells of malt smoked wood and rye. The taste is slightly smoky with a hint of caramel and other malt. Decent.
3.5 12/19/2008: Terrapin Side Project [Volume 2] RoggenRauchBier... Appearance: Frothy off-white head; hazy golden amber brown color; generous carbonation. Aroma: Sweet meaty smokiness; hints of caramel and fruity rye; applewood smoke; even more smoke would be good! Flavor: A good bittersweet, spicy, fruity blend; rye in mid-palate, tangy spice and dryness; dry, slightly bitter and char/ash aftertaste; sticks in the back of the throat; smoke is somewhat ashy and only on the surface; needs mor deep, meaty-like smokiness. Palate: Medium-light to medium body; mostly smooth. Overall: Very similar to Iron Hill Rauchbier but with obvious rye qualities and therefore not as sweet or caramelly; more dry and spicy from the rye. Other Thoughts: No obviously beechwood-smoked malt; the rye and smoke malts work well together; coffee-ish and creamy yeast undertones toward the backend; Good attempt that has promise, but needs refinement... 1 pt. 6 fl. oz. bottle from illinismitty via trade. Thanks Sean! Rating #140 for this beer.
3.4 Pours a lacing beige head and a copper-amber body. Smells of smoke, some caramel sweetness, Same flavor. Easy drinking.
3.3 Color is clear amber, thin white head. Aroma is slight bacon and caramel with slight citrus. Taste is the same. Thin body and medium carbonation. Finishes with a slight bitterness.
3.8 22 oz bomber shared by Gregis. Pour is brown ruby with a one inch off white head. No lacing as the head falls. Aroma of camp fire gone out (I suppose extinguished would be the word), nicely smoked yet still tame enough to allow the malt to shine through. Caramel sweet malt behind that, even some rye peeking through. Interesting and complex nose. Taste is the roasty, smoky and bright hoppy maltiness, with an interesting blast of rye bread. The caramel sweetness is a lot less pronounced in the taste which really helped the rye and smoke play together. Palate is lighter bodied, medium carbonation. Clean and really drinkable. Often times smoked beers will get a bit overly one dimensional for me, this one was nice and complex. It reminded me a bit of Aecht Schlenkerla Fastenbier in the way that smoke was present but not dominant. Thanks for sharing this one Greg.
(Rating #2494)
3.1 In short: A light session beer with moderate rye and moderate smoke. Easy to drink, easy to forget. How: Bottle 22oz. Consumed relatively fresh a few months after the beer release. Tasting session with Montreal crew. The look: Clear amber body topped by an off-white ring of foam In long: Light smoke one nose. Taste is smooth, this is not an intense beer. Moderate smoke. Rye is apparent but really not over the top. Based on the rye beers that I knew the % if rye I’d say this one is about 30% rye. Typical spicy juicy rye beer sensation. A bit toasted with faint caramel notes. Body is a bit oily. Overall sensation of oily bread crust. Very drinkable but nothing exciting here. The combination of rye and smoke is more interesting/intriguing than successful, I don’t think there will ever be a great rye based smoked beer. Description is educative to increase your german vocabulary. This was my rating on this DurchschnittRoggenrauchbier.
3.4 Bomber from JCB who, as we all know, kicks major ass. Hazy coppery amber (kinda) with an off white head. Nose is sweet smoke and earth over a spicy caramel. Flavor is all about the smoke, earth, some toasty bread and rye. Pretty good.
3.2 220z bottle. Pours a hazed orange with a creamy beige head. Aromas of light malts, and grain barely any smoke. Grainy malt flavors with a light smoke. Decent, but I’d prefer a barrage of smoke in my smoked beers.
3.1 This is one of the weirdest beer I have ever tried.. Its a mix between KC Masterpiece and Beer.. I would try to marinate steak with this brew..
3.2 Bottle shared with Steve. Strange brew. Amber in color with thin tan head. Smells and tastes of bbq ribs with a smokey finish.
3.5 Woah. Big thanks to the dudes in front of me at Dark Lord day that shared this one. Kind of an amber pour with a smokey aroma. Nice, caramel flavor with some smokiness, some rye. A bit of fruit. Overall, really badass.
3.4 [1947-20090116] 650mL bottle. Some donkey shed and candied smoked banana malt aroma. Clear, rich amber body with a quick foamy light tan head. More candied banana roast malt in the flavour. Medium body seems a tad thin. Fairly good. Overheard: "Did you mean to play a song called ’I’m a Donkey for Your Love?’" (c/o blankboy, w/ him, garthicus, GregClow, jerc)
3.2 Bomber. From D’s six packs and Dogs. Poured amber with reddish tones. 1/2 inch foamy, off-white head with nice lace. Aroma of caramel was mild and almost not there. Flavor of mild oak, and sweetness. Malts, rye, and caramel were also present. Slight smokiness as the beer warmed. Flavors began to mesh. Medium bodied. Easy to drink.
3.2 22 ounce bottle from Bruisin’ Ales. Pours a clear ruby red color with a thin head. Decent head retention and fair lacing. Aroma is caramel, fruit notes including strawberry and very light smoke. Taste is light smoke, caramel, toffee, peach, other fruit notes. Thin, papery vegetal hops. Medium bodied. Eh.
4.4 I don’t like the way you’re walking. You’ve been into the sacramental rauchbier again. You’re fahsnickered! You drunken mule, you. Aroma: wow, truly delicate and upliftingly pleasant! light sweet smoked wood and light honey bbq sauce .. Look: pours a 20yr old copper penny with medium foam, stable headring , lacing is proper.. . its my specialty and junk ... . Mouth: perfect perfect perfect in the mouth, full and coating but not overdone, classy! ... very pure smokiness, light kiss of smoked caramel even, a fantastic brew... (salami and smoked gouda would be amazing with this)... I said a few weeks ago that smoked beers were becoming my new favourite style (eclipsing my love of english barleywines) and this beer helps out my thinking ... What good is mining nose gold if I can’t share it with the townspeople? .. .
3.6 Pours with an amber body topped by a medium thick, off-white head with a good amount of lacing. It’s sweet and malty with moderately smokey notes. Light to medium bodied and smooth.
3.0 Bottle from Knightly Spirits. Pours a dark amber and a small tannish head. The nose is very subtle with notes of caramel. Flavors are also subtle with weak smoke, nuts, and cola. Medium/high carbonation and medium body. I was a little disappointed by this one. It was good, but not smoky enough for me.
3.4 22oz. bottle from Willow Bend Liquors in Lutz, FL. Pours caramel brown with a small tan head. Aroma is a litte bit of smoked meats, campfire, and some caramel...Aroma just isnt strong enough. Flavor is smoky malt, with some caramel and rye...Very smooth, not much of an aftertase, medium-light mouthfeel. Overall...this is a pretty good smoke beer...Not as good as the Aecht Schlenkerla Urbock. Aroma could have been much better.
3.3 Bottle at Sharp Edge Creek House. A delicious smoked beer. Aroma is what killed this beer. Aroma was near nothing with just a hint of smoke. Pour was a nice deep murky brown with a one finger off white head. Taste was nice and malty with a strong smokiness to it. The sweet rye undertones make this beer different and unique. Could have used a bit more carbonation but nice anyone.
3.5 Poured a clear copper color with an off-white head. Smoke and phenolic aroma. Mild caramel notes. Caramel malt with a smoky middle and finish. Almost a medium body. Smoky finish.
3.9 Bottle thanks to SpringsLicker. Poured brown in color with off white head. Aroma is smoke and roasted malt. Taste was similar with a nice sweetness to it. also a touch of coffee. Easy to drink and enjoyable.
3.8 22oz bottle acquired in trade with emacgee (thanks!). Poured a medium to deeper copperish color with an averaged sized off white head. Aromas of some smoked meats, caramel, and rye. Tastes of caramel, some smokiness, rye bread, and some light spiciness. The smoke was stronger than the aroma and on the subtle side in the tastes. I did like the rye in this.
