Thatchers Green Goblin Oak Aged Cider

Thatchers Green Goblin Oak Aged Cider

Available in 500ml glass bottles.
NOTE: The label carries the subtext "Oak Aged Cider" but there are not two separate products. However, it was replaced by non-oak aged 5% Green Goblin around 2016.
Thatchers made Green Goblin cider for Wychwood Brewery which owned the brand. In March 2010 Thatchers Cider acquired the brand from Wychwood under licence. The cider is no longer sold under the Wychwood label.

The Green Goblin from deep in the wood - 100 year-old oak vats, that is.
Made with English apples, and matured in oak vats, Green Goblin cider is a full-flavoured, bittersweet blend, beautifully balanced to give a fresh character with a medium dry finish.

2.4 Long-avoided bottle from B&M flitting between the egg-chasing and Grimsby Vs Tranmere. Dehydrated gold without head. Aroma of rubber, bread, booze and mouldering windfall fruit. Calamine, rubbery booze, almond and yeasty fruit. Vapid finish. No oak. Monotonous.
3.0 Bottle, Deep, slightly dark gold color. Aroma is sweet apple with hints of the oak barrel comes through. Taste is fresh apple, one of the better ones out there.
3.0 500ml bottle from Tesco Wines. Pours clear gold. Taste is pure apple juice, fairly rich, clean with no discernible dryness. Perfectly fine but lacks character.
2.7 Bottle. Pours golden with a fizzy white head. Aroma of red & green apples, oak and a hint of vanilla. Flavor of sweet apples, woody oak, vanilla and was lightly acidic.
3.2 500 ml. bottle, at home. Aroma: Pronounced oak; moderate juice sweetness nearly balanced by a marked astringency. Appearance: Goldish copper pour with sparkling carbonation (you can hear this stuff fizzle from your seat!); all those bubbles actually support a thin white cap, which is a cider first for me. Flavor: Juicy, sweet and oaky up front; the interesting astringency of the nose is lost, unfortunately. The finale is pretty abrupt, and dry. Palate: Light body, slick texture, fizzy carbonation, abrupt finish. Overall: I’d drink it again if offered; it has some points of interest, but is a bit out of my price range to be a repeat customer ($5.49 for my bottle).
3.3 (bottle - 500 ml) Gold pour with a fizzy white head. Light apple and lots of oak and vanilla in the aroma. Flavor is very oaky and lots of vanilla with a smooth apple hint and a lightly tart finish.
0.9 Pours deep copper with faint effervescence under a thin ring of white head. Off-putting aroma of bubblegum and rotten eggs. Sour, sulfuric taste with a splash of green apple, but the awfulness lingers. Maybe had the feel of mineral water on the tongue but I couldn’t concentrate on palate, I could only suffer through a few sips for the sake of review and then total drain pour. Which is a shame because this was a pint bottle and not what I’d consider “cheap”. My overall-score may be considered harsh by some, but I have not had something this sickening pass my lips since I vomited this past winter due to stomach flu. Glancing at a few reviews below, maybe this particular bottle has been over-shelved... but that needs to be the bottle-shop’s concern, not mine. I would suggest against buying Green Goblin here: ~~~~~~~~ 500ml Bottle, Kenwood Liquors, Oak Lawn, IL.
3.2 Poured a golden yellow color with aromas of light sour green apples, and some light oak. Flavors matched the aromas, not bad for a cider, but also not what i was expecting, was hoping for some dryness, not the sourness, but still decent.
2.6 Pours a deep golden, suspiciously so with no coloring listed on the ingredients. Lots of fiz, borderline too much. Doesn't grab you taste wise. Light oak, light sweetness but balanced by dryness. Everything is balanced one step too low. Meh
2.8 Pours clear golden with a thick and frothy but effervescent eggshell head. Crisp, slightly sour apple aroma has a hint of oak. Flavor is crisp, slightly sour, slightly sweet - typical, but enjoyable. Texture is somewhat fizzy, and a little thin. Go ahead, gobble it in.
2.6 500ml bottle from Sainsbury. Pours clear gold, no head. High carbonation. Light apple aromas, not much on the nose. Taste is sweet apple, faint wood notes. Not great to be honest.
3.3 Weak aroma of apples and cereal. Hints of phenols and very slight rag. Clear, light golden color. Tastes like apple juice mixed with champaign. Sweet and sour in the beginning, but it gets dry on the finish. High carbonated.
2.2 Very light Apple smell wish it was stronger, fairly dark brown color for a cider, taste is a little strange like artificial or something, slight almost bitter on the finish not a sweet cider, taste is ok off the bat but gets worse as it dissipates... I guess it’s refreshing though
3.2 Bottle. Golden colour with a white head. Aroma and flavour is apple, oak, sourness, sugar, yeast, fruit. OK cider. KRS 160814.
3.5 Bottle kindly shared by Miro, many thanks. dark golden color with medium white head. Aroma of apples, vinous notes, oak. Apples, oak, vanilla, very subtle sourness in dry finish. Good.
3.1 Bottle. Pours deep golden color, white head. Aroma of apples, pear. Taste is sweet, apples, wood, pear.
3.2 Backlog rating. 50cl bottle at Caspra tasting at Chriso’s, London. A good cider with average sweetness and good hints of acidity. Certainly exceeded my expectations.
3.2 16.9 Fl oz ($3.99) not a bad cider but less refined than some of the other stuff released under the brand. love their beers and this was okay...
1.8 A very dry cider that starts crisp and with a bit of flavor, but the finish is flat and lacking.
2.2 Bottle from Capone’s. Pours clear golden with white splotchy head and a lot of carbonation. Notes of apple and tart acidic yeastiness in the nose. Tastes dry, with notes of apple, champagney yeast and palate profile, and some woody flavor. Meh.
3.7 Got red apples coming through. Not too sweet or clawing. Nice one and would recommend. Balanced flavours, but fresh apples to the fore. Seems obvious thing to say , but many ciders are metallic and taste/smell artificial.Slightly different to other ciders in that respect.
3.1 500 ml bottle. Very yeasty cider with some oak flavor and lots of yeast. Decent one,
3.7 Pours darker honey in color with a nice white foam that settles into a lasting ring. Crisp dry apple and honey taste that lingers nicely. Props for this not opting to be sweet and surgery like so many US ciders and the newly formulated Strongbows are.
3.6 Horse blanket, apple aroma, quite strong. Clear amber. Oak, apple, farmhouse. Good balance, semi-dry. A little fizzy, which magnifies the dryness on the back of the palate. Good.
3.0 Bottle. Pours a medium tan brown color with lots of bubbles .. Taste very appleish. Easy drinking juice flavor. Very good
2.8 Pours clear bronze with little head and moderate carbonation. Overall taste has oak, a little bit sweet and floral, not too bitter.
2.4 Clear golden pour with a 2 finger, soapy white head that fades quickly to a thick ring, sustained by a fairly high effervescence. Aroma is sweet apple, earthy leafiness, and a little deep berry fruit. Flavor is sweet, musty apples, a hint of vanilla, alcohol, some fusel notes and musty leaves. Light to medium body with an oily feel throughout, medium to heavy, but somewhat soft carbonation and slightly chalky, but still oily finish. Not bad overall, but somewhat watered down tasting and a little heavy on the booziness and fusel notes.
2.7 Bottle 500ml @ Geokkjer Pours clear golden with a white head. Aroma has notes of green and yellow apples, pear, sugar and hint of vanilla. Taste is light sweet and light sour with a dry apple finish. Body is medium, texture is thin to oily, carbonation is soft.
3.0 Bottle. Pours golden with a white head. Aroma of red apples, fruitiness, apple peel and soap. Flavor is sweet apples with some fruitiness and a slight tart finish. Medium body, avrage carbonation.
3.0 50 cl bottle är Il Treno Bar. Copper Golden With Fast Vanishing white head. Notes of apples, Wood, berries, tarts, plastic. Very dry, tart. Easy drinkable but somewhat watery. When I ordered this tought it be beer. Disappointing service in this bar. - beerbasher
