The Bruery Provisions Series: Mother Funker

The Bruery Provisions Series: Mother Funker

Mother Funker is a sour blonde ale that has been aged for several years in barrels predominately used for Chardonnay. Mother Funker is a seriously sour beer, perhaps the most sour beer we’ve produced so far. Bursting with citrus, funk, and a hint of white vinegar, Mother Funker is for those who like their sours with more sour.

3.0 Appearance: Clear golden color with a off white head. Aroma: Malty, funky acidic and something weird.. Palate: Medium body. Heavy sour and acidic. A mild bitterness. Soft carbonation. Taste: Sour, acidic, vinegar and oak. Overall impression: Mamma mia, I do not think I have tasted any beer as sour and acidic as this one! Personal stats: Bottle @ Geokkjer
3.5 Bottle. Clear yellow pour with a white head. Sour lemon aromas. Tart with lemon notes. Decent body and mouthfeel.
3.5 Bottle 750ml @ Geokkjer Pours clear golden with a small off-white head. Aroma is sour with a notes of fruits, vinegar and vinous. Taste is light sweet and medium to heavy sour with a long very dry, sour and vinegar finish. Body is medium, texture is thin to oily, carbonation is flat to soft.
3.4 Bottle. Pours golden with a small white head.Aroma of lemon, some malt, some vinegar and funk. Flavor is sour and funky with some malt and wood. Medium body, average carbonation.
3.3 Bottle, 75cl, from trade with Papsoe. It’s a lightly unclear beer, golden in color and topped by a minimal sized white head. Quite funky, sourish aroma with nail polish remover, lemon, vinegar and fruityness in the aroma. Lemony, vinegarish flavor with lots of generic fruityness. Dry on the palate, soft carbonation and dry. Some vinous hints too, both initially and in the end. Ok, so it’s a good one, but it would certainly do better in a much smaller bottle. Or you could of course share with four or five friends. 131026

3.4 RBSG 2013. some haze in the yellow color. Vinegar and lightly sweet malt. It is sour, for an American sour beer.
4.0 Sampled at a recent tasting. Bruery does sours well, very well. Nice tartness here. Big lemon zest with a nice touch of funkness.
3.8 Bottle at rbsg. From notes. Tart and sour with lemon, vinegar and funk. Very good.
2.2 Yellow pour with a spritzy head. Holy fucking vinegar on the nose. Notes of roquefort cheese (butyric acid?) as well. Aggressive, astringent, vinegar. Light fruit notes are hinted in the background, mainly pear and lemon. Really odd beer, did not enjoy but was nice to try. Thanks broken sail!
3.9 Bottle at RBSG. Pour is a hazy, white streaked yellow. Tons of sourness on the nose, makes my mouth water a bit. Lots of lemon, really acidic. Not as much funk as expected but the sourness more than makes up for it.
3.9 Bottle at RBSG. Pours a hazy pale yellow. Aroma is pure sourness and acidic. Taste is sour tart lemon some wood and tannins and acidic. Palate is sticky and drying. Awesome!
4.1 Bottle at RBSG. Yellow pour, slightly hazy. Small white head. Very tart, sour. Under control though. Pear. Bold and awesome!
3.9 Thanks to Blake & Jenny for sharing! Poured cloudy, straw golden with a dusting of white head. The aroma picked up sour vinegar, oak, and apricot skins over paler malts.. all about the sour, and as such, well-presented. The flavor found sour lemon rind and vinegar throughout, with some sour apricot and peach skins joining.. more sour and vinegary on the finish.. sour and funky, as expected. Very sour and funky on the palate.. excellent stuff.
4.7 Pours to a glassy light yellow body with a thin white head. The aroma is very sour oak and white wine grapes with a funky light horse blanket. The flavor is fantastically sour with white balsamic vinegar and pears. The palate is ridiculously sour. Very puckeringly sour. Ph1. This is right in my wheelhouse.
3.7 bottle share at hill farmstead’s pre-3rd anniversary. pours cloudy pale yellow with a decent white head, some retention. intense acetic and citrus notes, lemon and citrus peel, wood, white grape characteristics, bready and floral, some ginger. average carbonation, light body, acetic and citrus finish. kind of rough at every sip but i still enjoyed it after all these previous RIS..
3.5 Bottle (750 ml). Thanks to the person who brought this at the Hill Farmstead pre-3rd anniversary bottle share. Hazy straw color with a little quickly diminishing white head and no lacing. Aroma is intensely sour with Chardonnay, lemon peel, yeast and vinegar. Taste is slightly sweet and intensely Sour with fruits, Chardonnay, lemon peel and light herbal notes. Medium body. Dry. Mouth puckering. Drinking a whole bottle by yourself could kill you. Fun to try though.
3.6 Un monstre d’acidité avec une complexité réduite. J’ai quand même apprécié son profil surette excessif mais heureusement que j’ai partagé.
3.6 Bottle with Chris at Ray’s. Pours a hazy yellow with some white head. Nose of lemon, vinegar, oak, some funk. Very tart. Had this right after a Doesjel so it was pretty disappointing.
3.5 Thanks Thomas bottle poured a hazy light yellow, no head or rention. taste of wine, lemon peel, vinegar and funk. smell was sour, acidic and vineous. super sour, almost got me to pucker with a funky barnyard finish.
3.6 Pours pale yellow with no head. The nose is lemons, vinegar, barnyard funk and a little medicinal. The taste is massive tart. no balance. The texture is crisp but has an unpleasant burn in the back of the throat from the amount of acid, the body is heavy and finish is long
3.4 Lemon citrus concentrate, highly attenuated, vinegar galore. Extremely sour, possibly the most sour commercial beer I've had, and I love it. Highly polarizing, to say the least. Makes a great addition to rhubarb cobbler.
4.7 Almost a perfect sour. Funky aroma, acidic flavor without being over bearing. Goes really really well in a B&T with KBS.
2.5 Saurer Antrunk mit gesüßten Essignoten. Künstlich, brennend im Rachen, besonders im Abgang disharmonisch. 8/11/8/7/9/8
3.5 Bottle through recent trade. Pour has a yellow golden color and a ring of white foam on the glass. Aroma has sweet fruit, dry white grape, lemon, medium acidity, and some yeasty funk. Mouth feel is light and there is basically non existent carbonation. Flavor is quite sour and abrasive but it does not dry out and the lack of carbonation is killer. Hints of sweet fruit, grape skins, lemon rind, rough on the acidity, and a lingering burning finish.
3.3 750ml bottle from Alan. Pale hazy yellow with a white head. Huge amount of lemon vinegar, light funk, some other citrus - very hard to discern anything past the vinegar. Sour that puckers your entire mouth, moderate body, incredibly dry, mild carbonation. Could only drink so much of this before I had to give it to someone else, definitely not balanced but if you like this kind of pure sour then worth trying.

2.4 Pretty sure this is the most sour I’ve ever tasted. Pure lemon, with a ranch dressing-like funkiness. I am not a fan of the style, but if you’re going for a crisp, sour, acetic acid flavor, this is going to be a superlative ale.
2.3 Very sour ... Smells of vinegar and lemon. Hard to enjoy for me... Not my cup of tea.
4.4 Bottle as shown. Pours a clear yellow gold with a small frothy white head leaving spotty lacing. The aroma is funk and bandaids. Thin mouthfeel with a very sour fruit and tart with mouth puckering sour finish. Wow really enjoyed this sour ale from The Bruery.
