The Bruery Sans Pagaie (2012 - 2014)

The Bruery Sans Pagaie (2012 - 2014)

French for "without a paddle", Sans Pagaie is our take on a Belgian Kriek. We added an incredible amount of cherries (whole and pureed) to this sour blonde ale and then we decided to add more. The result is a well balanced fruited sour ale, perfect on it’s own, even better with a slice of chocolate cake. 5.8% ABV, Cellerable for up to 3 years.
Note: this is a different beer than the limited Bruery Sour Cherry Kriek

3.8 Bottle at Craftheads. Nice cherry aroma, first sip is very tart, mouth drying. Lots of fruit, decent sourness, maybe not so much else. Refreshing and easy drinking. Good.
3.8 Bottle shared by alexsdad06. Poured a hazy dark golden color with an average frothy white head that mostly lasted with excellent lacing. Moderate to heavy tart fruit and yeast aroma. Medium body with a smooth texture and soft carbonation. Medium to heavy dark sweet flavor with a medium to heavy sweet & sour finish of moderate to long duration. This is a solid beer for style.
2.8 Shared 750ml to snifters. Super tart aroma. Face puckering sour with cherry and oak on the finish. Sticky gum licking sweetness.
4.0 750 ml bottle to snifter (shared by alexsdad06). Looks good; a hazy full apricot with off-white head that steadily dissipates into lacing. Smells good too; tart cherries with notes of brett, funk, and oak. Tastes like it smells with a pleasant medium-bodied mouthfeel. Good beer!
4.0 Simply wonderful. Like Cantillon. Nice tart aroma and taste with a nutty, woody finish.
3.7 Type: 750ml bottle (25.4 oz.) Glass: Westvletern XII Trappist glass From: Beer Advocate’s heresy22 Price: N/A Purchased: N/A Consumed: Oct. 25, 2014 Misc.: 2014 edition; Bottle says 6 percent ABV; Had about 2/3 of the bottle left when I got it Thanks Chris! Poured a dark pink lemonade color with light off white head that dissipated almost immediately. No lacing along the sides of the glass. No retention on the top all the way down. (Sight - 3.63) Smelled artificial cherry (on a sundae), sour cherry, black cherry, cherry ice cream, Sweet Tarts, Smarties, cherry Bubble Yum, Gobstoppers, light orange zest and very light vanilla. (Smell - 4.25) Tasted even more cherrier than the nose. Got sour cherry, cherry Bubble Yum, Sweet Tarts, black cherry, cherry ice cream and light oaky notes. Cherry notes (lots of them obviously) are mostly sugary artificial. (Taste - 4.13) Light body. Oily-to-thin texture. Average carbonation. Long, sour fruity finish. (Feel - 4.38) Cherry is the only way to describe this beer. A nice sour, especially if you are into cherries. Yum, yum. (Overall - 4.13) 4.15 93 A-
4.1 "could be classed as a fruit lambic too i suppose. looks like a slightly lighter colered fruit punch. the white heady disappears rather quick, but the carbonation level is really good, and great for this style. fairly aggressively sour with the cherries definiteky making their presence known on the back end. great lingering finish. very bright aroma, and especially flavor."
3.9 Draft. Hazy pink pour no head. Pink fruit, tartness, light funk. Berries and tart flavors, nice and tart.
3.2 Orange colored pour. Small amount of bubbles. No lacing. Sweet dough aroma. Taste is tart cherry pie.
3.8 Bottle: Cloudy copper body, muddled. The fizzling head is literally completely gone before I can even decide what color it is. Aroma with some light must, damp cotton blanket, acidic & sharp cherry skins, hefty vinegar, a bit of perfume & floral notes, some yogurty lacto. Extremely sour flavor. WOW. Balsamic vinegar, white wine vinegar, underripe cherry skin, lemon flesh, acetic & lactic acid assault the palate & tear up the gum line in an instant. I get a little bit of strawberry alongside the cherry, too. A touch of musty wood toward the finish as the insane tartness finally subsides. Acidic, sharp finish with hints of yogurt, cherry, & vinegar. The masochist in me actually enjoys certain sourness to the extend that my face implodes in upon itself much like a dying star. Such is the case, here. So if you like ass puckeringly tart shit, this is to die for. Not very "Belgian", but sour as fuck.
3.3 750 ml bottle shared with the Quebec City crew. Pours a cloudy pinkish pale orange with a short lived orange head. Aroma is sour, orange, cherry. Flavor is sugar, cherry, acid, vinegar. Finish is acid and acetic. Loads of lingering tartness. Medium body, weak to average carbonation.
4.0 Pours a beautiful hazy pink with an off-white head and lacing. It has a tart aroma with a bit of malt and some cherry. The flavor is tart fruit and malt up front with a cherry middle and balanced finish over a medium-might body.
3.7 Sample thanks to BuckeyeBoy. Pours out pale pinkish tinge with minimal foamy head. Fruity aroma, sweet and not too tart. Taste is cherry jam , a hint of yeast, and lots of dry tartness. Finish is bone dry, but overall halfway between a kriek and a sour. Nice.
4.0 Bottleshare thanks to DrewFace. Pours an orange amber color. White head. Aroma if tart sourness, just a hint of cherries. Taste is light, tart, sour, refreshing. Pretty darn drinkable.
4.1 Lightly hazy orange color, minimal white head. Big tart, funky aroma, some acidic notes, some fruity notes. Very sour, acidic. Some funky barnyardy notes as well, cherries come thru but mostly dominated by sour. Dry and tasty overall.
3.2 Crimson gold red. Nose is acidic cherry juice. Taste is super sour very acidic a touch of balsamic and cherry. No where close to a Belgian kriek. Still, not horrible
3.9 Pours a pinkish color. Smells like oak and cherry. Tastes very very sour with notes of oak and cherries. Overall enjoyable and refreshing beer
3.5 Pinkish apricot colors. Cloudy. Headless. Big fruit aromas. Clove phenols very sharp acidity light astringency. Salty. Baby wipes. Interesting. A bit too acidic for easy drinking or even aggressive sipping.
3.5 May 25, 2014 - bottle from the source. Light orange pour with some head. Aroma was fruity, cherry and super sour. Taste was tart fruit, but very sour and vinegar.
3.5 750 ml bottle. Pours a cloudy pink color with little ring of white head around the snifter. Aroma of tart cherry pie filling and some acidic tones. I enjoy the aroma. Flavor is tart and lactic, good Lord, I’m gong to have heart burn after drinking this! Sour cherries, lightly funky oak up front with with a little bit of yeasty, bread in the center. The finish has a strong amount of pucker and tartness with a yogurt acidic notes. Also reminds me of cherry Sour Patch Kids from back in the day. Medium in body with a spritzer carbonation. More than likely you will love or hate this beer, I fall right in the middle, borderline too acidic, either way this is a sipper.
3.8 750ml bottle, not sure where I got it, split with my bride. Pours a clear, light, pinkish-amber color with a white head that fades pretty quickly. Aroma is fruity, cherry, earthy, oak. Medium on the palate with lively carbonation. Flavor is lightly sour, tart, oak, cherry pie, a little vinegar, lemon, with a stiff, tart finish. Very nice.
3.9 Bottle shared by Tommy. This was pretty good. Bright red pour with a thin white lace. Very sour nose and flavor with a bracing lactic acidity. Guessing this was a bit aged as the fruit had faded quite a bit. Sort of reminded me of the more sour bottles of lou pepe kriek and framboise that I have had. Almost too sour for me—at least these days, but I still like it a lot.
4.3 Poured from a bomber into a The Bruery snifter a orange red with minimal head. Aroma is tart cherry shizzzzz. A sour blonde with more flavor that one would ever expect. Bitter dry finish makes this crazy!. Well done.
3.9 Pours pink with thin white head. Big tart aroma and sweet cherry. Taste is very Puckery with lots of sour cherry and tangy lemon
3.9 750ml bottle in a tulip. Pours hazy pinkish/golden with an off-white head. Aroma of sourness, cherries, pale malts, and light oak. Flavor the same with a nice blend of the sourness and cherries and light oak. Average texture. A good sour.
(Rating #5484)
3.3 My Bottom Line: Buttery cherries evolve into a sour splash, as pediococcus and wine vinegar aspects create somewhat puzzling complexity. Further Personal Perceptions: -A circle of foam floats atop the cloudy red. -The acidic finish is harsh but it should please those looking for intensity on that front. -Carbonation is not as intense as I had imagined. -Drinkability is low for this type of beer. This is a sipper, no doubt. Bottle.
4.1 Updating an old rating. 2014 bottle, 6%. Looks a bit like fruit punch mixed with beer -- pinkish hue, light white ring of head. Aroma is cherries and funk primarily. Sharply tart with nice cherry sweetness to balance it out. One of my favorite Bruery beers. Has a nice lightness to it, ridiculously drinkable.
3.1 pours hazy almost cloudy-dirty peach-pink without a head. cherries, lots of cheesy lactos, acetic, oranges, cinnamon, perfume, quite spicy in fact. moderate carbonation, light body, puckering and spicy finish. low funk and drinkability. not only far from a kriek, but clearly unbalanced and out of control.
4.0 Hazy brown with a cream head. Nose is sour, tart, wood, and funky. Easy palate, heavy tart finish, nail polish, sour, acidic, and a great finish.
