The Commons Urban Farmhouse Ale

The Commons Urban Farmhouse Ale

Urban Farmhouse Ale (previously known as B-side) is a light , crisp and refreshing farmhouse ale. Golden to light orange in color with a floral nose and a dry finish. Urban Farmhouse Ale is brewed with three base malts: Organic Pilsner, Organic 2-row and Rye. [Farmhouse Ale] Northwest grown Willamette, Golding and Hallertauer aroma hops offer a soft underlying bitterness to help bolster the refreshing nature of the beer. The key note speaker in this beer is the Farmhouse Ale yeast.

Traditionally farmhouse ales were brewed on farms in the French and Flemish regions of Belgium. These beers were born out of necessity as most water was not potable and the farmers needed a light, refreshing low alcohol beverage to offer the hardworking farmhands.

3.4 Draft sample at Oedipus International Beer Festival 2016. Amsterdam, The Netherlands. 03.07.2016. Pour it hazy yellow color with small white head. Aroma herbal, some eggy feel. Taste sweet spice, cinnamon, crazy candy sugar, yeasty dry finish. Interesting
3.3 Bottle shared by a friend. Clear gold pour with a thick white head. Nose of malt, banana and herbs. Malty flavor with banana and herbs with and overly carbonated body.
3.7 Bottle at Culmination Fest 16: Poured a hazy yellow with a white head. Aroma is floral and yeast esters. Taste was barnyard funk with esters, and citrus.
3.5 750mL bottle, from Spring 2016, drunk 7/16/16. Big, lasting, white head tops a sparkling, peach-nectarine-golden with light copper tints and a good clarity. Very lively yeast in the nose shows pretty straightforward white pepper, nectarine, apple, a touch of bubble gum and nuttiness. Fresh though and quite charming, even if not every single note is quite the pinnacle of saison brewing. Spicy/peppery hops show respect to tradition, with a big honey-caramel kick on the finish as the malts enter the picture. No alcohol or flaw. Malty, with lots of honey, light caramel and a big bready character. Tons of carbonation, though mostly tight and natural make for a lighter perceived body than what it actually is and as the carbonation settles and the beer wears on, I do think it gets just a bit too malty and sweet. Still, there are plentiful enjoyable esters and phenols to behold with soft, spicy hops lingering and no alcohol or flaw.
3.4 Draft to taster Consummation: Wheat, yeast, citrus, c’est tout. Adjunct: Apple, lemon, biscuit, yeast aromas; hazy yellow with a bright white head that reduces quickly; great summer beer
3.4 On tap. Pours a slightly hazy honey with thin white head and minimal lacing. Smells of lemon and yeast. Tastes yeast citrus. Light bodied. Lingering yeast lemon aftertaste with minor bitterness.

3.3 Big bottle at Svijet piva (World of Beers), Zagreb. About a year ago. Shared with lovely Anja, Shotgun Fred and Marko. Murky yellow, strong medium white head. Malts, apple, a bit metallic. Light sourness, apple vinegar, not bad. Malty finish, kind of sweet aftertaste. There are both + and - for this one.
3.4 Sampled from tap at the Oedipus International Beer Festival 2016. Clear, pale straw yellow with a white head. Fruity-grassy, slightly sourish and a little floral aroma of lemon peel, pineapple and grass. Slightly bitter, grassy-fruity, floral taste of lemon peel, some pineapple and some grass, followed by a short, slightly bitter, moderately grassy and dry finish. Medium body, slightly effervescent mouthfeel, soft carbonation. Nice!
3.7 bottle as shown .. . hazy dark gold .. medium head, lacing is blasted everywhere .. nice bit of funk- bark, wheat, mild rye, yeast .. mild girth, balanced beer, solid brew .. . . queen songs should be banned from sporting events
3.8 Straw blonde, slightly hazy with a small white head. Very classy belgian aromas including hay, berries, a touch of lightstruck hops, and old cheese. Light bodied, prickly carbonated, nice yeasts presence, finishing dry. Nice thirst quencher.
3.4 Draught @ Commons, Portland, OR. Pours yellowish with a smooth head. Aroma of fruits, farmyard, hay, grass and lemon. Taste is smooth, slightly grassy and earthy with some floral notes, hay and lemon. Finish is smooth, earthy and slightly fruity with some hay and floral notes. Okay easygoing saison.
3.6 On tap @ The Commons. Pours slightly hazy golden yellow with medium white head that fades quickly. Aroma is dry sweet light pale malt, just a hint of saison funk, not enough to match the malt sweetness though. Taste is clean, dry, light crystal malt - oddly no sweetness whatsoever... Saison yeast is present on the finish, although even lighter than the nose. Clean, refreshing, super easy drinking saison. Can’t decide if this is just super clean saison; or a yeasty pale... either way, nice drinker.
3.8 750ml bottle. So this is a brewery from Portland, Oregon called The Commons Brewery that brews a beer called Urban Farmhouse. If these people aren’t raging mega-hipsters, then I’m not a raging mega-ticker. That said, it’s saison season, so I thought I’d check this out. Slightly hazy golden color with a very large, fluffy white head. The aroma is very nice, floral, spicy, and mildly funky. Dry flavor, ready pilsner malt, floral hops and rye adding some pep to the finish. Medium-bodied with lively carbonation. Very drinkable. Overall a very good saison, fitting of being taken from farmhouse-to-table, if you will, and you know those hipsters will.
3.3 The first beer for the Cannery Row beer club enjoyed by 6 members. It's been about a year since last Farmhouse tasting. Cheers!

3.6 Bottle served in a tulip. It pours a beautiful light gold with a dense head of white foam that lingers. The aroma is soft, wheaty & spicy cloves. Great soft body. The taste is a bit floral, soapy, sweet, sweet tarts, wheat and just easy to drink. I like it, it doesn’t wow but it’s a solid mellow easy sipper. I am happy I got it half-off from World Beer Market.
3.3 Bottle poured to glass. Wheat nose, some fruit very pleasant. Soft foamy mouth feel, sudsy, creamy. The wheat flavor doesn’t stand out well but it is enjoyable to drink.
