3.9 Tallahassee, Fl - on tap at at Liberty Bar and Restaurant. Sparkling dark orange pour, frothy, off white head with a delicate web of lace. Boozy aroma, but not off- putting, some kids cereal sweetness, but not cloying. Flavor has some caramel, a bit of maple syrup, some brown sugar, solid sweetness, but not cloying at all. Thick, rich mouthfeel.
3.3 Poured from a bottle. Cloudy caramel brown with an off white ring of foam. Semi sweet toffee aroma. Light carbonation with a medium slightly oily body that clings to the glass. Smooth syrupy like texture that coats the tongue and roof of the mouth. Just a hint of bitterness along with the toffee flavor. Hides the alcohol well. No harshness and no burn at the finish. Flavors linger awhile. Very enjoyable.
4.3 I’m forced to review this after having poured a glass with a flat head—I think I got unlucky and got one that had just lost some of its carbonation or something. That said, it still pours a deep reddish brown and tastes wonderful. It’s kind of nutty and simultaneously smooth and robust. Fantastic beer.
4.1 was pleasantly surprised by this beer! poured a hazy brownish red color with a nice thin white head that lasted nicely eventually lacing the glass. the aroma smacks you as you open the bottle with strong aromas of roasted coffee and hazelnuts. Has a nice body with just the right amount of carbonation. Flavor is bittersweet chocolate a bitty nutty. ends nicely with a small bite. the alcohol level is noticeable but not unpleasant. .
3.1 12 oz bottle served in a snifter. A bit lighter in color and less rich in flavor than average, although there was some sediment left in the bottle. ABV partially hidden.
3.9 Bottle. Aroma of grapes, fortified wine, and caramel. Sweet caramel and grape taste with a crisp bitter finish. Not much booze. Good stuff.
3.8 Bottle: Clear reddish brown, with a hoppy whiskey aroma. Sweet and sharp at the same time, Not bad,
3.8 Hazy, brassy appearance with a small, off white head and modest lasting. Sweet, malty aroma of toffee and ripe fruit with a light spicy hop edge. Flavors of caramel, shortbread cookies and dried fruit overpower the subtle hops. Full bodied, moderately carbonated mouthfeel. Lingering alcohol in the finish is noticable.
3.0 Pours a cloudy orange-amber with a large foamy off-white head. Aroma of sugary malt with some hops and alcohol. Taste is very sweet. Medium body.
2.8 Pours a dark amber with thick light brown head. Has a light sweet caramel and fruit aroma. Has a smooth and milk body. A subtle taste dark fruits, caramel, and malts.
4.0 Cloudy brown appearance with sweet aroma of dried fruit and cherries. Drift fruits taste with alcohol. Sweet flavor with slightly bitter aftertaste.
3.7 Bottle. Poured a clear reddish brown color with a moderate frothy off-white head that lasted with good lacing. Moderate to heavy complex roasted malt and earthy hop aroma. Medium body with a sticky texture and soft carbonation. Medium to heavy bittersweet flavor with a medium to heavy bittersweet and small alcohol bite finish of moderate to long duration. This is a solid beer.
3.1 Bottle shared during RBWG 2015 - Tampa. Pours mostly clear amber-gold with a white foam head. The nose holds toasted crackers, tangy fruits, bread. Medium sweet flavor with more tangy fruits, berries, leafy hops, booze. Medium to full bodied with fine carbonation. Warming finish with ripe fruits, bready malts, suggestions of age. So so.
3.2 Bottle on the Brew Bus during the RBWG 2015 welcome event. Hazy orange brown with off-white head. Aromas of caramel, dark fruit, toffee. Tastes of dark fruit, caramel, light tart fruit, floral. Medium body with a dry finish.
3.2 Bottle. No label taken. Pours orange. Nose/taste of candy fruit, sticky orange peel, hoppy citrus and caramel. Medium body.
2.8 2/19/15. 12oz bottle during RBWG 2015. I was surprised I hadn’t had this already. Deep amber brown pour with a small tan head, mild lacing. Sour cherry aroma, vinous, some dark fruits and brown sugar, grainy, husky. Sweet flavor, vinous, sour cherry, burnt toffee, dark fruits. Not the greatest.
2.9 A true barleywine. Good aroma and smooth taste with a fresh mix. This is a sweet beer.
2.7 Bottle - Caramel and vinous notes, sweet cherry and a bit of booze. Coudyish copper with a beige head. Lots of plum, almost sour caramel, slight sweetness and heat.
3.5 Bottle on RBWG bus. Gold with a small head. Nose of Apple concntrate. Some what earthy lead and compost. Similar flavor. Tangy autumn fruits. Some lemon. Sweet caramel. Somewhat hot on the finish. Ok.
2.0 12oz bottle, tasted on RBWG bus. Up front, quite oxidized. Almost nothing but oxidization. Hazy amber orange color. Thin off-white head. A couple loose dots and bits of lace. Very astringent bitter taste, light to moderate sweet, dry finish. Bigger body. Soft, lighter carbonation. Not a pleasant experience. Don’t try to age this barleywine.
3.1 Poured from bottle into snifter. Pours a rich reddish copper with a slightly orange-tinted head. Head falls some, but stays pretty resilient and leaves a ton of lacing. Aroma - full of caramel and malt notes, dried fruit underneath. Taste - surprising almost burnt taste at the start, then continues into a more traditional tasting barley wine. Burnt flavor fades pretty quickly, but is a bit of a surprise with every sip.
3.7 Piney hop aroma with a high amount of fruity esters and toffee malt aroma. Appearance is a clear amber with an off white head with good retention. Flavor is malty sweet with notes of toffee, biscuit and notes of roast. Fruity esters are high. Hop flavor is resiny. Mouthfeel is medium high with medium carbonation. Overall, it's a good american barleywine. Could use a little more malt complexity and body though.
4.0 Location: 12 oz bottle from jcos, 11/16/14 Aroma: The nose is strongly malty/bready, some fruity notes, a little booze, and some caramel Appearance: A clear orange-amber colored beer with a small off-white head and light lace Flavor: The flavor profile is lightly sweet, heavy malty, booze, and a good bit of bitterness as well Palate: Fairly full bodied, with a light stickiness, a bit of heat, a smooth feel, and a fairly dry finish Overall Impression: This is a fairly impressive example of the style. The booze is definitely present, but it doesn’t overpower the rest of what is going on here. Based purely off its strength, this probably wouldn’t be an everyday beer for me, but it is certainly an enjoyable one. Thanks Kramer!
3.5 Treansfer from BA review on 7-11-13- Served on tap in a snifter Appearance – Served a deep copper color with a one finger cream colored head. The head has a good level of retension slowly fading over time to leave a decent level of lace on the sides of the glass. Smell – The aroma is heaviest of sweeter aromas. The main is that of a caramel and butterscotch nature, but it also has lots of fruity aromas of cherry and raisin. Along with these smells is a moderately strong boozy smell of rum and a bit of a herbal hop aroma. Taste – The taste begins with a bready and moderately sweet flavor of caramel and darker fruits upfront. A bit of booziness is present from the start with it growing stronger and more rum like in flavor as the flavor advances. Some wood and herbal flavors begin developing more toward the middle to the taste, with them remaining rather light to the end. Some roasted flavors come to the tongue more at the end and when combined with the herbal and a bitter citrus, one is left with a hot bitter-sweet boozy flavor to linger on the tongue. Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is on the creamier side with a carbonation level that is rather low. Both are appropriate for creating a more chewy and thick beer which in concert with its strength and boozy nature make for a slow sipper. Overall – Not too bad, but a little messy at the end of the taste as the bitter and sweet sorta collide with the booziness leaving a slightly off flavor in the mouth. Not one I would necessarily frequent.
2.0 bottle from the roter. sticky sweet. sweet carmelized brown sugar. tree sap. sweet caramel. bit of sweet cough medicine. dryer than expected, with some warming, though somewhat harsh, booze. too much of a cough syrup presence. not particularly drinkable.
3.2 Bottle. Pours a dark copper color with white head. Plum, butterscotch, malty aromas. Syrupy, malty, light cherry, fruity flavors.
3.8 Cashew and walnut nose, fairly rich, all within a caramel base, some lacing. Clear dark copper, thick yellow head. Overripe orange, oak, cashews, lemon zest. Complexities really come to life upon warming. Medium body, quite hot. Enjoyable, but I’m not sure I like the hop choice in this milieu.
4.1 THOUGHTS: A little different than most barley wines. Almost like a cross between an IPA and a barley wine with a heavy dose of citrusy wheat beer. Hid alcohol in an unprecedented way, to me. I can’t say this was a great barley wine based on what it should taste like, but it was an incredible beer that is truly different and enjoyable if I pretend styles don’t exist. Surprisingly easy to drink since the citrus is almost more acidic than bitter. TECHNICAL: Tried 2/22/2013. Bottle. Poured a murky, medium to dark, brownish orange with a small, off-white head that mostly diminished and left fair lacing. The aroma contained light to moderate caramel; a little burnt toast; moderate grapefruit, orange, lemon and lime hops (orange was the dominant one); slight brown sugar, hints of alcohol; ever so slight sulfur; and all sorts of citrus. The initial flavor was mod sweet and bitter, and lightly acidic; while the finish was heavily sweet; moderately bitter and lightly sour with a long duration. There was caramel malt, marmalade, very citrusy hops, orange grapefruit, lemon and lime, orange juice, but sour orange was the dominant flavor. The medium to full body was a little oily with soft yet tingly carbonation and an ever so slightly alcoholic finish.
3.7 Bottle. Not old. Pours with small head, thick legs, deep clear golden amber. Aroma is strong dank piny and spicy resin hops, brown sugar. Flavor is very straightforward bitter and more resiny hops with booze over powering the somewhat fruity sweetness and sugars. Feel is oily and a little wooden with soft moderate carbonation. It’s hitting the spot though not remarkable.
3.7 Nice barleywine with amber copper colour. Notes of caramel. Toffee, cara malts, brown sugar, american hops
