The Kernel Export India Porter

The Kernel Export India Porter

Bottle conditioned, 500ml and unpasteurised keg; Regular.

ABV may vary slightly.

Kernel have begun regularly serving draft Export India Porter with the hops prominently labeled. As such there are again separate entries of this beer (as of January 2020). Any release where the hop variation is not clear should be rated using this entry.

The Export India Porter relates to porter in similar manner to the way the IPA relates to the Pale Ale: they added more hops. We’ve taken Barclay Perkins recipe from 1855, but changed the hops to Columbus and Cascade (American varieties) and hopped it in the same way that we hop our IPAs. The result is a dark brown beer that smells of cocoa, roses, and some orange. The body is quite light, and it is carbonated more highly than usual for a porter to make it more refreshing. It’s quite light in texture and tastes of Turkish delight dusted with cocoa powder – chocolate, rose water and fruit. Dry finish.

3.5 Old rating from 2016 - From the bottle, pours black with a beige frothy head. Aromas & tastes of coffee, citrus, orange, wood, chocolate & roasted malt. Medium body. Dry finish
3.5 50 cl bottle (bottling date 2020-11-11, BBD 2021-11-11), bought from Hop Burns & Black, drunk at home 2021-02-18. Hops in this gyre - Centennial, Nelson Sauvin and Mandarina Bavaria. Appearance is a surprising opaque black with a very thick and incredibly dense coffee-crema-coloured head on the surface that lingers a reasonable amount of time. Could be visible carbonation, but who knows?! It's so dark you'd never see it. I actually really like this style of appearance for a dark beer - just slightly surprising on a porter which I'd expect to be a bit lighter. Aroma is playing heavy on the roasted malts. Burn and char rather than toastiness for sure. There's a hint of spice and a touch of something else - maybe coffee beans? Or very dark dried fruits? It's rather nice, but it is a bit one-note and fainter than I'd expect. Taste is bolder. Strong note of dark chocolate, some lighter coffee, a very - very - slight caramel hint and a fair whack of roasted bitterness towards the end. It's quite well-balanced and pleasant - I expected more char after the nose, but pleased it's more subtle instead. Palate is practically perfect. Silky smooth round and full-bodied in the mouth with a touch of in-mouth carbonation playing on the tongue, before a long cleaner but drying finish. For this flavour palate, I don't think I could identify any ways it could improve. Overall, this is clearly an exceptionally well-made beer. Great colour with a well-held head and a perfect palate. But something about it just isn't doing it for me. Maybe I'm just not a really dark porter fan, given I like the fruity notes of most porters. Worth a try definitely to see if it appeals. Just not quite my cup of tea.
4.1 Żywica, iglaki, paloność, kawa w aromacie. W smaku bardzo podobnie, nie za dużo ciała, smukłe, finisz bardzo palony i żywiczny. Piwo świetne, intensywne.

4.3 330ml bottle, hops: Simcoe. Black pour, tanned creamy head with loads of retention; lovely looking. Aroma of dark chocolate, coffee, earthy and spicy hops. Wonderful smoothness and soft carbonation on the palate with flavours of roasted malts, dark chocolate, plums, blackberries, coffee, spice. Finish has a strong bitterness for this style, semi-dry and spicy. Rich and complex; wonderful beer.
4.1 Bottle from Ken's. 6.0% ABV, mosaic and amarillo. Pours a lovely enticing deep black and a thick tan foam that lasts one-finger thick. Coffee, chocolate orange, piney hop, and a bit of warm booze on the nose. Light-medium sweetness, big roast coffee bean and ash bitterness. Thick mouthfeel, dry coffee finish with a gentle boozy warmth. Delicious porter.

3.7 50cl bottle, thanks to @simontomlinson and EuroSwap 2/2020. Pours dark brown with beige head. Aroma has roasted malts, hint of yeast and exotic fruits. Taste is well balanced and malty with roasty bitter finish. Very nice dark beer.
4.1 Bottle 6.1% ABV from Real Ale Ltd, Maida Vale, London - Aroma : Loads goinh on here. Deeply roasted dark chocolate maltiness, hints of a plummy fruity richness, stewed coffee, a little lemon citrus and a tiny smoky/spicy note. Taste : As aroma. Extremely bitter/dry roasted near burnt malt. Rich chocolate and dark fruit with a traditional porter fusty/musty tone. Superb!
3.9 Bottle from The Curious Hop, Otley. Pours black with a large very thick creamy beige head. Aromas of roasted malts, chocolate, coffee, nuts and also notes of dark fruits. Taste has all the notes from the aroma with a big roasty bitterness on the finish. Medium to full body with a slightly oily mouthfeel. Big flavourful Porter. Good
4.0 500ml bottle at home. Pours an inky black, very stout like actually, medium to large tan almost brown head. Nose is chocolate, peanut, cocoa powder. Flavour is dark chocolate, peanut butter, molasses, small bit of hop resin.
3.0 Decent porter but not a show stopper. Rather dry but far too many quality porters around to go out of my way to have this again
3.5 On tap at Omnipollos Hatt. Almost black with a small tan head. Aroma and taste of dark malt, chocolate, licorice and some coffee. Medium body and bitterness. A decent one.
3.3 Classic porter flavours, more bitterness than we might like, enjoyable - a good drink all the way through.
4.0 Pours very dark brown, with a marvellous lasting beige head. Aroma is big and roasty. Flavour of wonderful slight burnt fruit and bitter coffee, finish is notably bitter. Class act.
3.9 Bottled 19.05.20 @ 5.9% Tight tan head stayed on a near black still body. Roast, nutty & iron aroma. Medium bodied, light over the tongue with a clean back. Roasted, nutty, cereal, malt & pithy tastes. Tastes so good!
3.7 Good porter, strong coffee/burnt
3.3 Can @ home. Clear black w a beige head. Aroma medium malty (caramel, roasted, coffee) and hoppy (citrus). Flavor light to medium sweet, coffee, chocolate, ending bitter. Medium body, average+ carbonated.
3.6 aromat intensywny, kawa, choć bardziej w typie zbożowej, paloność, coś jakby słonecznik. W smaku wytrawne, lekko palone, znowu kawa zbożowa i słonecznik, trochę gorzkiej czekolady w posmaku.
5.0 De 32gp. En copa Teku. Estudiando. Muy cremosa. Con el abv comedido pero cargada de cuerpo y sabor y un puntito lupulado que engancha muchisimo sin tapar el tostado
4.2 Great porter with a bitter finnsh. Notes of coffee caramel and bitter hops. Pours dark with a lovely dark and lasting head.
3.6 No sweetness left, dry as fuck, but clean and crisp and well made with a great roast profile. Tilt birmingham
3.8 Cask@Dynamo, Brussels. Almost black, large brown head. Nose coffee, mIlk chocolate. Smooth texture, lightly sweet taste in line with the aroma..
3.5 Tap at FOB, Rimini, Italy. Pours black with creamy light brown foam, very fine. Aroma is herbal and licorice. Body is average, like carbonation. Taste is medium bitter. Final is fairly bitter.
3.9 Tap at Tap 40, Crewe (as 6.3%). Bit of a complex case this one. It calls itself an India Porter, but I would say it’s really a Black IPA. It pours jet black with a strong but transient beige head. The nose has coffee to the fore, but plenty of citrus in the background. The initial taste is sharpness, bitter like lettuce base. But there is also coffee and chocolate with burnt toast hints. The finish is bitter black coffee, and alcoholic warmth in the stomach. Excellent !
4.2 This pours a perfect black with a beige mousse that would make French pattisières fill with envy. There's a strong but subdued coffee, intelligently refined, not overly cloying nor syrupy, just an honest delivery that seems so basic in its elements but somehow seems to elude many breweries on this side of the world. The flavour is smooth barley, honest hops not trying to fry your tastebuds. A great mouthfeel with solid oiliness. Wonderful in all respects, nothing amazingly unique but every element is balanced and delivered in the right amount at the right time.
4.1 500ml bottle @ 6.5% ABV from Hop Burns and Black. Pours black with a creamy beige head. Aroma is pine resin, roasted malt, coffee, citrus. Taste is light sweet, citrusy hops, burnt malt, earthy, pine, a little boozey. Moderate bitter finish.
3.8 Black body with a thick beige head. Aroma is coffee. Taste is coffee again. Dry, coffeish finish. medium body soft carbonation oily texture.
